Crystallinity-Gradient Etched Hollow Mesoporous Zinc Nanoparticle for Dual-Source H2O2-Driven Tumor Ferroptosis Therapy

Haobin Cai,Jing Yang,Zehui Wang,Xinyu Chen,Qingdeng Fan,Lin Huang,Fanchao Que,Haolong Ma,Tianshui Bai,Bin Ren,Xueyan Yun,Yan Li,Shipeng Ning,Zheyu Shen

Zn 2+ offers significant advantages for cancer therapy via mitochondrial disruption, immune activation, and metal homeostasis perturbation, but faces challenges of rapid clearance and systemic toxicity. Existing zinc‑based (e.g., zinc oxide (ZnO), and zinc peroxide) nanoparticles often lack internal voids and sufficient surface area, restricting drug loading and functionalization. In this study, we developed a crystallinity‑gradient selective etching method to tailor biodegradable hollow mesoporous zinc nanoparticle (HMZN). Typically, zinc peroxide nanoparticles with low‑crystallinity core and high‑crystallinity shell were synthesized, and ammonia water was used to selectively etch the inner low‑crystallinity core, producing HMZN. Hemin (HEM) and Gd‑poly(acrylic acid) macrochelates (GP) were then loaded to construct HEM@HMZN@GP for dual-source H 2 O 2 surge-driven tumor ferroptosis therapy. In acidic tumor microenvironment, Zn 2+ , H 2 O 2 , HEM, and GP can be released from HEM@HMZN@GP. The released Zn 2+ damages mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) and generates superoxide anions (•O 2 − ), which can be rapidly catalyzed by superoxide dismutase into H 2 O 2 . The dual-source of H 2 O 2 markedly elevates local oxidative stress. HEM can be enzymatically converted by heme oxygenase‑1 to Fe 2+ , which reacts with the abundant H 2 O 2 via Fenton reaction to produce hydroxyl radicals, initiating lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis. GP enhances T 1 ‑weighted magnetic resonance imaging signals, facilitating drug delivery visualization in tumors.

D-π-A mediated band engineering with directional charge separation for dual-pathway H2O2 photosynthesis

Baogang Fu,Nan Su,Jianmin Luo,Yun Wang,Bo Hu,Liang Cheng,Hongjun Dong,Chunmei Li

SCN-AP with a D-π-A network was synthesized via sulfur doping and pyridine grafting. • SCN-AP achieves integrated design of 1 O 2 generation and kinetic matching of ORR/WOR. • SCN-AP boosts ·O 2 - / 1 O 2 generation, with a H 2 O 2 yield of 1030 μmol g -1 within 2 h. • Antibacterial assays verify the photoactivated antibacterial potential of SCN-AP. • In-situ XPS and DRIFTS characterize photogenerated electron flow and reaction intermediates. Photocatalytic H 2 O 2 synthesis is commonly dominated by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), whereas simultaneously enabling water oxidation reaction (WOR) and directional charge separation through band-structure regulation remains challenging. Herein, sulfur doping and pyridine modification were integrated to construct an intramolecular donor- π -acceptor (D- π -A) network within the carbon nitride framework. The resulting electronic polarization promotes directional separation of photogenerated charge carriers and optimizes the band structure to thermodynamically enable both ORR and WOR pathways. Consequently, the as-synthesized SCN-AP photocatalyst achieves an H 2 O 2 yield of 1030 μmol g -1 within 2 h in pure water, 3.73 times that of pristine PCN, and exhibits effective antibacterial activity against clinically relevant pathogens including Acinetobacter beijerinckii and Klebsiella variicola . The in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) collectively support the coexistence of ORR and WOR pathways. The ORR serves as the predominant route and involves a ·O 2 - -mediated stepwise reduction pathway together with a 1 O 2 -associated pathway, while WOR provides a complementary hole-driven contribution to H 2 O 2 formation. This work demonstrates a feasible band-engineering strategy for constructing polymeric photocatalysts with directional charge transfer and dual-pathway H 2 O 2 photosynthesis. This work demonstrates a D-π-A-mediated electronic polarization strategy that directs charge migration in carbon nitride, enabling dual-pathway H 2 O 2 photosynthesis through coupled ORR and WOR processes. Design and Synthesis of Morroniside Derivatives Targeting H2O2‐Induced Oxidative Stress: Antioxidant‐Triggered Neuroprotective Effect

Mingtao Wang,Haiyi Gao,Yuxiang Song,Baohong Sun,Yian Zhao,Peiliang Dong,Hua Han

Oxidative stress drove neuronal damage by disrupting redox homeostasis and played a crucial role in the progression of neurological disorders. Natural antioxidants garnered significant interest as potential therapeutics. Morroniside exhibited promising antioxidant activity but had low bioavailability and poor lipid solubility, limiting its therapeutic application. To address these limitations, a series of alkyl and benzenesulfonate ester derivatives were designed and synthesized. Their antioxidant activities were evaluated using multiple in vitro assays. Structure–activity relationship (SAR) analysis indicated that both the type and position of substituents influenced antioxidant activity. Subsequently, the six most active derivatives were selected and evaluated for cytotoxicity and antioxidant capacity in hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 )‐induced PC12 cells. The results identified derivative 4b as the most promising candidate, demonstrating acceptable cytotoxicity and strong protective effects. Furthermore, 4b significantly increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity while reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Mechanistic studies suggested that 4b exerted antioxidant effects through modulation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway. These findings demonstrated that sulfonate ester modification was an effective strategy to improve the antioxidant activity of morroniside, and derivative 4b was identified as a promising antioxidant and neuroprotective candidate. Morroniside sulfonate ester derivatives are designed and synthesized to improve antioxidant activity. Biological evaluation identifies derivative 4b as the most promising candidate, exhibiting potent antioxidant effects through modulation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway.

High-Entropy Metal Oxychloride Photocatalyst for Visible-Light-Driven H2O2 Synthesis up to 600 nm

Bao Yunfeng,Liu Hailong,Zou Peng,Yuan MengZhu,Zheng Anmin,Zhang Fuxiang

The development of inorganic photocatalysts with broad visible-light response is crucial for achieving efficient solar-driven H 2 O 2 production. In this work, based on a high-entropy mixing strategy, a high-entropy metal oxychloride (Bi 2 R mix O 4 Cl, R mix = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Y) was designed and synthesized. This material exhibits a significantly red-shifted absorption edge extending to about 600 nm in the visible region, corresponding to a narrowed bandgap of 2.27 eV. By loading spatially separated 1 wt % Pd and 0.5 wt % CoO x dual cocatalysts via photodeposition, the optimized catalyst achieves efficient photocatalytic H 2 O 2 synthesis from O 2 and H 2 O in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 6). Under broad-spectrum visible light, including monochromatic irradiation near 600 nm, the catalyst shows excellent H 2 O 2 production activity (∼90 μM/h) and maintains good stability in cycling tests. In situ ATR-FTIR and open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD) analyses further reveal its effective charge carrier separation and O 2 activation pathway. This study offers a design strategy for developing inorganic photocatalysts with broad visible-light response and high stability.

Molecular-level design of S-scheme COF/Ce-MOF heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 generation

Yan Ge,Caiyi Fan,Qiyue Zhang,Hui Yang,Saisai Yuan,Bin Xu

In situ synthesis of S-scheme COF/Ce-MOF heterojunctions significantly enhances photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production under ambient conditions. The directional charge separation, precise band alignment, and synergistic dual active sites of the heterojunction enable efficient, stable, and selective H 2 O 2 generation. The CRM (Ce-MOF/COF) heterojunction delivers an H 2 O 2 yield that is 11.2-fold higher than pristine Ce-MOF and 3.1-fold higher than pure COF. Moreover, the CRM heterojunction maintains excellent productivity over a 6-h reaction period. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analyses revealed not only the elemental composition and chemical states at the heterojunction interface but also the interfacial electronic redistribution and band alignment responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic performance. Specifically, the combined experimental and theoretical results confirmed the presence of strong interfacial coupling, the formation of an internal electric field, and the establishment of an S-scheme charge transfer pathway, all of which contribute to efficient charge separation and the preservation of high redox potentials, thereby enabling superior H 2 O 2 generation activity. Overall, this work not only deepens the understanding of MOF-based photocatalysts but also provides valuable design principles for constructing next-generation heterojunction materials with superior efficiency in photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production for environmental remediation.

Ultrasensitive Cr(VI) sensing via H2O2-free electron-accepting pathway using atomically dispersed CuCo-NC

Liang Jinhua,Ye Hongying,Yuan Zuhuan,Wu Zhaodi,Li Guizhen,Hao Ruizheng,Wu Xiaoqian,Cheng Shipei,Hu Yilin,Zhu Wenyuan

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a highly toxic and carcinogenic environmental pollutant, poses severe threats to ecological balance and human health. Traditional colorimetric detection methods relying on peroxidase-like nanozymes often suffer from interference caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and coexisting redox-active substances, compromising their accuracy in complex water matrices. Herein, we report a novel H 2 O 2 -free colorimetric strategy for the ultrasensitive detection of Cr(VI) using atomically dispersed CuCo-NC catalysts. Unlike conventional mechanisms, the synergistic interplay between Cu and Co atoms modulates the electronic structure (d-band center), enabling Cr(VI) to act as a direct electron acceptor. This unique pathway facilitates the oxidation of TMB without generating ROS intermediates, thereby conferring exceptional resistance to common interferents such as Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ . The sensor exhibits a wide linear range (50–1000 nM) and an ultralow detection limit of 1.12 nM, surpassing many existing methods. Furthermore, the practical applicability of this probe is validated through the successful monitoring of Cr(VI) in real water samples (e.g., Guilin Lijiang River), demonstrating its robustness for on-site environmental surveillance. This work not only provides a reliable tool for early-warning monitoring of chromium pollution but also offers mechanistic insights into H 2 O 2 -free catalytic pathways. Graphical abstract Schematic illustration of the H 2 O 2 -free colorimetric sensing strategy using atomically dispersed CuCo-NC nanozymes. The synergistic Cu/Co dual sites enable Cr(VI) to act as a direct electron acceptor, bypassing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thus eliminating interference from coexisting redox-active substances. This mechanism allows for the ultrasensitive and selective visual detection of Cr(VI) in real water environments

Polydopamine-sheathed Cu2O supraparticles for improved photocatalytic H2O2 production via a scalable one-pot synthesis

Seohyeon Kim,Minsu Gu

To achieve stable and efficient photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), this study presents a composite photocatalyst where a polydopamine (PDA) layer was formed on cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) supraparticles via a straightforward self-polymerization of dopamine. By maintaining a constant amount of Cu 2 O and tuning the PDA concentration, the optimal formulation exhibiting the highest H 2 O 2 yield was identified. Structural and chemical analyses confirmed the uniform PDA coating and demonstrated that the composite effectively suppressed H 2 O 2 decomposition and maintained excellent stability over repeated cycles. This enhanced performance is attributed to improved charge transfer pathways between Cu 2 O and PDA. The band structure and electron transfer analysis further revealed that the composite follows a p-n type-Ⅱ heterojunction mechanism, enabling selective H 2 O 2 generation via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). We expect that this simple one-pot approach to constructing high-efficiency, scalable, and stable photocatalysts will offer new opportunities for green energy conversion and environmental remediation.

Wanchuan Jin,Aoyun Wang,Xinhua Li,Yuxin Wang,Yuanhong Liu,Ruishi Xie,Rongrong Luo,Yuanli Li

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production is a promising green and sustainable approach, but achieving high efficiency in pure water systems without the sacrificial agents remains a significant challenge. Here, gold (Au) nanoparticles with varying loadings are photodeposited onto the surface of ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) nanoflowers to enhance photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. The optimized Au 1000 -ZIS sample achieves an exceptional H 2 O 2 production rate of 906.13 µmol g −1 h −1 under pure water conditions, along with outstanding cycling stability. Mechanistic studies reveal that multivalent Au nanoparticles serve as efficient electron trapping sites, thereby significantly enhancing the spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers and facilitating rapid charge transfer. This enhanced charge transfer kinetics facilitates H 2 O 2 photosynthesis through a dual-channel process (2-electron oxygen reduction and water oxidation) without any additional sacrificial agent. This study enhances the understanding of the critical role of Au as a cocatalyst in photocatalytic processes and presents a promising strategy for sustainable and efficient H 2 O 2 production. Graphical Multivalent Au nanoparticles loaded onto ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers have been constructed to effective H 2 O 2 photosynthesis from pure water without sacrificial agents, in which Au cocatalysts act as an electron trap, boosting accelerated electron transfer kinetics and enabling a dual-channel oxygen reduction reaction/water oxidation mechanism, achieving a high yield of 906.13 µmol g −1 h −1 .

Polarization engineering of ether-embedded covalent organic frameworks for boosting photocatalytic H2O2 production from seawater

Yue Wu,Haiyan Song

Visible light-driven hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production from natural seawater over covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is becoming a challenge. In this work, a polarization strategy via incorporating oxo-ether ( O ) functional groups into COFs architecture was attempted and demonstrated to significantly enhance photocarriers separation. The strategy interestingly transformed the COFs morphology from rod-like flower clusters to sheet-like flower clusters. Furthermore, the monomer 4,4′-oxydianiline (OD) of the oxo-ether functionalized COFs (TpOD-COF) obtained a cost efficiency that was about 1794 times higher than the monomer benzidine (BD) formed non-functionalized COFs (TpBD-COF). TpOD-COF in real seawater achieved 4598 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 of H 2 O 2 productivity, and 10.2% of apparent quantum yield (AQY) without electron-proton donors and pure oxygen (O 2 ), which was 1.91 times higher than TpBD-COF. Mechanism studies revealed that TpOD-COF not only satisfies the thermodynamic requirement for the 2e − oxygen reduction reaction, but also indirectly enhances H 2 O 2 production through water oxidation, thereby establishing a cycle system that goes from water (H 2 O) to O 2 and then indirectly to H 2 O 2 , which promotes the overall reaction kinetics. More importantly, the catalyst did not deactivate in seawater; instead, the presence of ions further promoted electron transfer. Furthermore, the polar oxygen atoms served as additional hydrogen bond acceptors, enhancing the hydrogen-bonding network architecture. The system suggested a powerful functional-groups-mediated polarization engineering for the development of highly efficient metal-free photocatalysts.

Spin-State Reconfiguration in Single Mn Sites Directs Selective Two-Electron O2 Reduction to H2O2

Ge Xiao,Wu Xinyi,Liu Xinya,Zheng Xiyang,Xu Jinze,Tian Li-jiao,Wang Wei,Wang Xiaozhi

Spin state strongly governs the pathway selectivity of photocatalytic oxygen reduction, dictating whether the reaction proceeds via the desired two electron (2e – ) route to H 2 O 2 or the competing four electron (4e – ) pathway. Herein, this work reports a ligand-field symmetry-breaking strategy that enables controlled spin state switching, thereby steering the oxygen reduction pathway toward selective two electron H 2 O 2 production. Specifically, symmetry breaking creates an asymmetric equatorial ligand field, triggering a deterministic spin state transition from intermediate spin to high spin on the Mn site. The resulting high-spin configuration features delocalized d-states and a downshifted d-band center, which collectively weaken *OOH adsorption to suppress premature O–O bond cleavage while preserving efficient O 2 activation through spin polarized electron transfer. As a result, the optimized high spin catalyst delivers an exceptional H 2 O 2 production rate of 5025 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 under simulated sunlight, representing a 2.3-fold enhancement over its intermediate spin (IS) counterpart. Furthermore, its activity is maintained under natural sunlight in ambient air, achieving a H 2 O 2 production rate of 2662 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 . This work establishes ligand field symmetry breaking as a precise and generalizable paradigm for spin state engineering in single atom catalysis, offering a direct route to overcome the selectivity efficiency compromise in photosynthesis of H 2 O 2 .

Mesoporous titanium-based organic frameworks for highly efficient room-temperature oxidative desulfurization using diluted H2O2

Gan Ye,Weixue Zhang,Mian Xie,Wei Zou,Xingye Zeng,Hanlu Wang

A novel Ti-BTC with a mesoporous structure and uniformly dispersed Ti-OH sites was successfully synthesized. • Ti-BTC exhibits outstanding ODS activity; 99.5% of sulfur (1000 ppm) can be oxidized at 40 °C within 20 min. • The ODS activity of Ti-BTC at 40 °C reaches 52.4 mmol h −1 g −1 , exceeding that of most previously reported Ti-MOFs. • DFT results reveal that OH anchored on Ti sites react with H 2 O 2 to form Ti-OOH species that dominate ODS efficiency. • The mesoporous architecture enhances the accessibility of sulfur to Ti-OOH active sites and promotes rapid mass transfer. Desulfurization represents a pivotal process to produce ultraclean fuels, yet the design and fabrication of advanced materials to enhance desulfurization efficiency continues to pose significant challenges. Herein, a novel mesoporous titanium-based organic frameworks (Ti-BTC) was successfully synthesized via a solvothermal route. The optimized Ti-BTC exhibits outstanding oxidative desulfurization (ODS) performance, enabling the complete oxidation of various sulfur-containing compounds (1000 ppm sulfur) into the corresponding sulfones at 30 °C within 14 min or at 50 °C within 3 min with H 2 O 2 /sulfur (O/S) molar ratio of 5. Notably, even when molar ratio of O/S is reduced to 2.5, 99.5% of sulfur species are oxidized at 40 °C within 20 min. The ODS activity of Ti-BTC at 40 °C attains 52.4 mmol h −1 g −1 , surpassing most previously reported Ti-containing organic materials. Density functional theory calculation and comprehensive characterization results demonstrate that Ti-OH group anchored on vacancy Ti sites readily react with H 2 O 2 to generate peroxo-titanium intermediate, which efficiently oxidize pre-adsorbed sulfur and thus determine the overall ODS efficiency. Additionally, the mesoporous structure of Ti-BTC improves the accessibility of sulfur to in-situ-generated Ti-OOH species and facilitates rapid mass transfer, which synergistically enhances the catalytic performance. Ignition behavior of H2O2-based hypergolic ionic liquids promoted by non-metallic iodine-rich salts

Bingxi Song,Yue Li,Yijie Cai,Xingyu Wang,Yingying Cao,Long Liu,Yanqiang Zhang

The tunability of ionic liquids allows the cations and anions to play different roles, with the cations acting as fuel and the anions serving as catalysts. • Ionic liquid propellants are free of metals and can enhance the performance of the fuel. • The thermodynamic mechanism and ignition mechanism of ionic liquid iodine promoters were studied, providing a theoretical foundation for subsequent research. The H₂O₂-ILs spontaneous combustion propellant can solve the problems associated with traditional propellants, such as the toxicity, volatility and corrosive nature of oxidants. However, a long ignition delay time (IDT) has resulted in by the weak acidity and high latent heat of H₂O₂. This paper presents the synthesis of two non-metallic polyiodide promoters: 1,3-dimethyl-4,5-diiodoimidazolium iodide (P-1) and 1,3-dimethyl-4,5-diiodoimidazolium triiodide (P-2). The physical and chemical properties, as well as the combustion behaviour, of the two promoters when compounded with ionic liquid fuels (1-allyl-3-ethylcyanoammonium bromide ([AEIM][BH₃CN]) were studied. The IDT of the fuel system was reduced from 2870 ms to 90 ms (P-1, 15%) and 55 ms (P-2, 20%), respectively, after compounding the promoters. This improvement in ignition performance is primarily due to the promoter reducing the fuel's decomposition activation energy and the Gibbs free energy of the dehydrogenation reaction between hydrogen peroxide and H₃BCN anions in the fuel-H₂O₂ reaction. This study will inform the improvement of the performance of H₂O₂-ILs as spontaneous combustion propellants. Download: Download high-res image (141KB) Download: Download full-size image
