Lanthanide doping has been instrumental in tuning the emissions of double perovskite halides (DPHs) into the near-infrared (NIR) region. However, the limited penetration depth of UV excitation and typically low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of these materials restrict their utility in biomedical applications. In this paper, Cr3+-doped lead-free DPHs (Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+) have been explored, featuring a broadband NIR emission spanning 800–1300 nm and an impressive PLQY of 76.9%. Oriented toward biological applications, we employ Yb3+ as a codopant to be introduced into Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+. The novel Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+,Yb3+ crystal powder displays a red-shifted emission (peaking at 995 nm) with a remarkably narrower full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 51 nm. Importantly, the efficient energy transfer between Cr3+ and Yb3+ enables Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+,Yb3+ to maintain a PLQY of 46.1% upon 780 nm excitation. Leveraging its NIR-I excitable and NIR-II emissive properties, Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+,Yb3+ presents great potential in biodetection and bioimaging applications. Its superior energy transfer efficiency, high PLQY, and favorable spectral characteristics position this material as a promising candidate for advanced biomedical techniques requiring deep tissue penetration and high imaging contrast.

Gel-based ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) cells provide alternative thermal energy harvesting from the environment, showing obvious advantages in voltage matching for self-powered Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors. However, the gel-based i-TE cells always suffer a long thermal charging time and poor output power performance. Herein, a multilayer electrode engineering strategy is proposed from the device-design level, aiming to decrease the ions' diffusion distance, increase the electrode surface area, and facilitate the ions' reaction and recovery process. The thermal charging time is shortened from 27 to 8 min as the electrode layers increase from 2 to 8. An ultrahigh instantaneous power density of 15.8 mW m −2 K −2 and 2 h output energy density ( E 2h ) of 403 J m −2 are achieved in an 8-layer electrode i-TE cell. Finally, A flexible and wearable i-TE device with 20 units is demonstrated to generate a remarkable voltage of 3.8 V and output power of 282 µW by harvesting the human body heat. This work provides a feasible and effective route to design the i-TE device, hopefully promoting its practical power generation application.

Food-derived peptides with angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory (ACEI) activity have garnered significant research attention. This study focused on examining ACEI peptides from Porphyra haitanensis and investigating their potential inhibitory mechanisms through a combination of in silico and in vitro methods. Five novel potential ACEI peptides (ASF: Ala-Ser-Phe, EIIL: Glu-Ile-Ile-Leu, LCVPR: Leu-Cys-Val-Pro-Arg, LDVVN: Leu-Asp-Val-Val-Asn, and LSPSW: Leu-Ser-Pro-Ser-Trp) were identified through a combination of peptidomics and in silico bioinformatics analysis, of which LSPSW showed the highest activity (IC 50 : 5.27 ± 0.53 μM). After simulated gastrointestinal digestion (SGD), the activities of LCVPR and LSPSW remained almost unchanged. The results from inhibition kinetics and molecular docking demonstrated that ACEI peptides with differing inhibition mechanisms could successfully bind to ACE through hydrogen bonds. Based on network pharmacology analysis and cellular experiments, LSPSW exerted antihypertensive effects by regulating the expression levels of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARG), prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), and renin (REN). This research provided a novel theoretical foundation for the high-value application of P. haitanensis .

To significantly enhance reaction efficiency of porous heterojunctions in various applications, precise engineering of customization heterostructures through energy-level modulation is indispensable. Herein, the preparation of a core-shell porous heterojunction, UiO-66@TDCOF, is reported. Taking advantage of adjustable structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the energy-level of UiO-66 core is tailored to precisely align with that of porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (denoted as TDCOF) shell. As a results, the heterojunction transitions flexibly from a type-I to a type-II configuration, which remarkably enhances the efficiency of charge separation under light irradiation, resulting in exceptional performances in chemiresistive gas sensing. Notably, the sensitivity of (NH 2 ) 1.24 -UiO-66@TDCOF towards NO 2 is at a high level among all reported heterojunctions under visible-light condition, surpassing the majority of previously reported MOF and COF materials. This research not only presents a strategy for the design of heterojunctions but also gives an approach to material design tailored for chemical applications.

Recently, low-dimensional copper(I)-based halide has been considered as a potential substitute for its lead-based counterpart due to its environmental friendliness, facile preparation and superior luminescence performance. In particular, as a representative efficient luminescent material, it shows great potential as a scintillator for X-ray detection. Herein, three organic copper(I) halide single crystals were grown by incorporating a conjugated organic cation (4-benzylpyridine, 4-bzpy) with copper(I) iodide modules. The three compounds exhibit distinct crystal structure and properties. Notably, the zero-dimensional cubane-like (4-bzpy)4Cu4I4 shows a broadband emission with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (∼99.7%) and a large Stokes shift (∼216 nm). More importantly, it demonstrates an obvious X-ray response with a high light yield (∼60 948 photons per MeV) and a perfect linear relationship with the dose rate under X-ray irradiation. The highly efficient emission of (4-bzpy)4Cu4I4 clusters mainly originates from the ligand-to-core charge transfer state. This work not only provides further understanding of the importance of crystal structure in the properties of organic copper(I) halides, but also facilitates the design and fabrication of high-performance X-ray scintillators.

Interfacial recombination at the defective buried interface of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has long been a persistent and formidable challenge. Introducing molecular bridge via self-assembled molecules (SAMs) offers an effective strategy to mitigate this issue, primarily by chemically passivating interfacial defects that cause nonradiative recombination. However, the influence of SAMs on radiative recombination is often overlooked. In this study, two SAMs with similar molecular configurations but distinct electron-donating/-withdrawing characters─3-thiopheneboronic acid (TBA) and 4-pyridineboronic acid (PBA)─are introduced at the buried interface of n-i-p PSCs. Although both SAMs effectively passivate defects, the PSCs based on them exhibit contrasting trends of performance gain and loss for PBA and TBA, respectively. Mechanistic investigations reveal that TBA featuring an electron-donating thiophene group induces n-type doping in the SnO2 electron transport layer and exacerbates radiative recombination loss, while PBA with the electron-withdrawing pyridine group behaves in an opposite way. These findings highlight the critical role of the electronic effects of SAMs on buried interface recombination beyond their defect passivation function. The trade-off between these two effects is essential for optimizing buried interface engineering through SAMs.

Persistent or refractory apical periodontitis is primarily caused by microbial retention, as conventional root canal treatment often fails to eliminate infections completely, and systemic antibiotic therapy is insufficient to achieve effective concentrations for eradicating bacterial biofilms within root canals. This highlights the urgent need for novel therapeutics offering safe and effective antimicrobial strategies. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a promising approach for root canal disinfection. However, commonly used photosensitizers such as Ce6 suffer from poor water solubility and strong aggregation tendencies, resulting in limited penetration into infected sites. In this study, we developed a DNase I-Lip@Ce6 nanodelivery system by combining deoxyribonuclease I (DNase I) with liposome-encapsulated Ce6. The liposomal carrier facilitated efficient delivery of Ce6 into target bacterial cells, while DNase I degraded extracellular DNA in the biofilm matrix, weakening its protective barrier. This synergistically enhanced Ce6 penetration and therapeutic efficacy, leading to the successful eradication of planktonic Enterococcus faecalis and in vitro biofilms. This strategy offers a novel approach for the precision treatment of persistent oral infections and holds strong potential for clinical translation.

NIR-I electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is emerging as highly sensitive detection strategy due to its low background at the ambient conditions. Nonetheless, the applications of current NIR-I ECL nanoprobes are limited to the harsh synthetic/testing condition, high toxicity, low signal, and poor biocompatibility. In this study, glutathione/lipoic acid-protected trimetallic Au 6 PtAg nanoclusters (GSH/LA/Au 6 PtAg NCs) are demonstrated as an efficient nanoprobe with strong ECL signals around 850 nm in the presences of triethylamine. Critically, the alloying of Ag + into the bimetallic Au 2.5 Pt NCs altered the electronic structures of Pt(II), valences of Au(0), and the zata potentials of NCs, promoting the ECL intensities at 850 nm by 1.0 time. Additionally, the partly ligand-exchange of GSH by LA further increased the ECL intensities at 850 nm by 2.2 times through accelerating electron transfer processes. Meanwhile, the NIR-I fluorescence ( λ emit = 910 nm) was enhanced. More importantly, the utilization of GSH/LA/Au 6 PtAg NCs μg −1 is enhanced by 3000 times after embedding into SiO 2 microspheres ( D , 318 nm). Because noradrenalin has substantial inhibition effects to NIR-I ECL of GSH/LA/Au 6 PtAg/SiO 2 , 1.0 nM−0.1 mM noradrenalin was detected with the low limit of detection as 0.04 nM (S/N = 3) selectively. Biomolecules, glucose, ascorbic acid, or uric acid didn't interrupt the detection of noradrenalin. The sensitivity of this ECL method to detect noradrenalin is much higher than those in previous reports, enabling the early diagnosis of neurogenic diseases.

A key challenge in the recovery of Au ions from thiosulfate gold leaching solutions is the design of adsorbents with abundant active adsorption sites, exhibiting high affinity and selectivity toward Au(I), thus enabling its fast, high-purity, and large-capacity recovery. Guided by theoretical calculations, in this study a polychloromethylstyrene (PCMS) material capable of supplying additional charges was functionalized by triethylamine (TEA) to selectively recover gold from a thiosulfate leaching solution. The adsorption of Au(S₂O₃)₂³⁻ onto the functionalized PCMS–TEA followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a single-molecular-layer chemisorption process. PCMS–TEA exhibited a significant Au-ion loading capacity (81.50 kg/t), highlighting the potential of benzene rings to enhance the charge intensity of ionic adsorbents. Furthermore, PCMS–TEA exhibited good Au-ion selectivity in a copper–ethylenediamine–thiosulfate Au leaching solution. The adsorption mechanism of Au ions on PCMS–TEA involved ion exchange between Cl − in the adsorbent and Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3− complex ions. The visual analysis of density functional theory results, based on the Multiwfn and Visual Molecular Dynamics programs, confirmed the presence of a weak interaction between PCMS–TEA and Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3− , dominated by van der Waals forces. After five desorption cycles, the adsorption rate of Au ions was approximately 90%, and NaCl was used as the elution reagent. This study introduces a promising adsorbent for the selective recovery of Au ions from thiosulfate Au leaching solutions.

Precise spectral modulation of plasmonic absorptions in the near-infrared (NIR-I and NIR-II) regions is crucial for matching laser wavelengths in practical applications, driving significant interest in sensing, photothermal therapy, and bioimaging. In this work, we show that silver (Ag) alloying in gold (Au) nanosheets provides tunable plasmonic absorption across both NIR-I (700–950 nm) and NIR-II (1000–1350 nm) spectral windows while preserving their intrinsic two-dimensional morphology. Through controlled variation of the Ag/Au ratio in a seed-mediated synthesis, we observe a continuous blue-shift of the in-plane dipole plasmon resonance from 1000 nm (NIR-II) to 700 nm (NIR-I). Theoretical simulations confirm that Ag incorporation tunes plasmonic responses by modulating both the free electron density and local dielectric environment. This morphology-preserved alloying approach establishes a versatile platform for developing optically switchable nanomaterials with promising applications in multiplexed biosensing and wavelength-selective photothermal therapy.

Perturbation of energy metabolism is an essential feature during infection and inflammation. TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) is crucial for initiating the innate immune response against viral infection, although aberrant and ongoing TBK1 activation induces excessive production of type I interferons (IFN-I). Nonetheless, the mechanisms whereby energy metabolism controls TBK1 activation remain unclear. Here, we elucidate a mechanism linking energy metabolism to the inhibition of TBK1-induced IFN-I responses via the immune response gene 1 (IRG1)-itaconic acid axis. Mechanistically, itaconic acid and its derivatives alkylated TBK1 at Cys605, thereby disrupting TBK1 dimerization and rapid activation. IRG1, the enzyme that catalyzes itaconic acid production, is upregulated during late-phase viral infection and acts as a feedback regulator to restrain TBK1 activity. We developed itaconic acid-based compounds ITA-5/ITA-9 as alternative TBK1 inhibitors. ITA-5/ITA-9 effectively limited excess IFN-I-mediated hyperinflammation. These findings provide a promising therapeutic strategy for treating diseases mediated by aberrant TBK1 activation.
