Herein, we report a novel electrochemical sensor for determining glucose in sweat, employing a graphene/metal–organic framework (MOF) as a modifier for stainless steel (SS) electrode. The MOF structures, MIL-101(Cr), MIL-101(Cr)-NO 2 , and MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 , were hydrothermally synthesized and then characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD and SEM results proved the formation of the crystalline MIL-101(Cr) and MIL-101(Cr)-NO 2 , and the amorphous MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 . Additionally, FT-IR and isotherms confirmed their composition and mesoporosity, respectively. The amorphous MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 showed the best electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation among the fabricated MOFs. The electrocatalytic activity was also boosted after incorporating conductive graphene. Under optimized conditions, graphene/MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 /SS was used for glucose determination using square wave voltammetry and chronoamperometry with detection limits of 0.004 and 0.01 mM, respectively. Moreover, the modified electrode showed acceptable recovery values when it was applied to detect glucose in artificial sweat samples.

Effective identification of excavated leather artifacts assumes a crucial role in the subsequent restoration and protection of the artifacts, and on a deeper level, it holds significant implications for the history and culture represented by the artifacts. Existing approaches fail to address the pain points of micro-trace detection and species identification. In this work, two-dimensional transition metal carbonitrides/carbon nanotubes (MXene/CNTs) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were employed as electrochemical immunosensor materials to construct and utilize a sandwich-type immunosensor for the first time to detect leather artifacts. The sensor exhibits a wide linear detection range of 10 −1 –10 3 ng/mL and an extremely low detection limit of 83 pg/mL, which can fulfill the requirements of ultra-sensitive detection. In addition, the sandwich electrochemical immunosensor demonstrates excellent specificity and stability, with the redox peak current value retaining over 95 % of the original value after 10 repeats of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and more than 85 % of the original peak current after one week of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), with an RSD of 0.767 %. The immunosensor achieves satisfactory outcomes in both qualitative and quantitative detection when analyzing leather artifacts and micro-traces, and its performance surpasses that of existing methods. Therefore, this work not only introduces novel materials for the construction of sandwich immunosensors but also provides new concepts and approaches for archaeological detection of cultural relics.

NiFe2O4and TiO2are widely studied for photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications due to their unique properties. Nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), such as MIL-100(Fe) (where MIL stands for Materials of Lavoisier Institute), are commonly incorporated to enhance PEC performance by offering a high surface area and facilitating efficient charge transport. Composite systems are commonly employed to overcome the limitations of individual PEC catalysts. In this study, a highly efficient NiFe2O4/NG@MIL-100(Fe)/TiO2photoanode was developed to enhance photoelectrochemical water-splitting performance. The composite was synthesized via a hydrothermal method with a two-step heating process. X-ray diffraction confirmed the expected crystal structures, with peak broadening in NiFe2O4indicating reduced crystallite size and increased lattice strain. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the Ni 2p and Fe 2p regions validated the successful integration of NiFe2O4into the composite. Electrochemical analysis demonstrated excellent performance, with linear sweep voltammetry achieving a peak photocurrent density of 3.5 mA cm−2at 1.23 V (vs RHE). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed a reduced charge-transfer resistance of 50 Ω, indicating improved charge transport. Optical and electronic properties were evaluated using UV-Vis spectroscopy and Tauc plots, revealing a direct bandgap of 2.1 eV. The composite exhibited stable photocurrent under amperometric J-t testing for 2000 s, demonstrating its durability. These findings underscore the potential of NiFe2O4/NG@MIL-100(Fe)/TiO2as a promising material for renewable energy applications, particularly in photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Achieving efficient ligand-metal charge transfer remains a significant challenge for constructing high-performance N 2 -fixing MOF photocatalysts. Herein, we successfully fabricated mixed-metal MIL-101(Fe/Cr) materials to achieve ligand-metal charge transfer, leading to significantly improved N 2 fixation performance. Performance test under visible light demonstrated that MIL-101(Fe/Cr) achieved nitrogen fixation activity of 125.19 μmol h −1 g −1 , which is 1.7 times greater than that of pure MIL-101(Fe). The experimental confirm that the incorporation of Cr metal enables the more favorable accumulation of photogenerated electrons at the Fe catalytic centers, attributed to increased electronic interactions and enhanced charge transfer efficiency, thus facilitating the activation process of N 2 , and consequently enhancing ammonia (NH 3 ) production. This work provides new insights into strategies for improving the ligand-metal charge transfer efficiency of MOF-based photocatalytic nitrogen fixation materials.

The construction of heterojunction photo-Fenton catalysts to activate hydrogen peroxide for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in water has attracted considerable attention. Herein, a CuBi 2 O 4 @MIL-53(Fe) Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst was successfully prepared by solvothermal method for tetracycline (TC) degradation. In this catalytic system, the heterogeneous photocatalytic reaction and the Fenton reaction form a strong synergistic effect in the degradation of organic pollutants through the transfer of photogenerated electrons. The results indicate that in the presence of trace concentrations of H 2 O 2 (2.60 mM), 0.20 g/L of MC-15 (with CuBi 2 O 4 accounting for 15 % of the mass of MIL-53(Fe)) exhibited the highest catalytic activity, with a TC (150 mg/L) removal rate of 94.0 % after 50 min of visible light irradiation. Interestingly, the MC-15 catalyst can still achieve a removal rate of 62.1 % of TC even under dark conditions. Furthermore, in degradation experiments, MC-15 exhibited high environmental stability and applicability in different natural water system. The excellent catalytic performance of the light/MC-15/H 2 O 2 system is attributed to the quick separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs from Z-scheme heterojunction CuBi 2 O 4 @MIL-53(Fe) and the accelerated bimetallic ions cycle. A possible photo-Fenton catalytic mechanism of MC-15 catalyst is proposed based photoelectrochemical tests, free radical capture experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. This study provides a reference for the development of iron-based metal-organic framework composite photo-Fenton catalysts.

The porous iron-based metal organic frameworks (NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)), which consists of 2-amino benzene dicarboxylic acid (H 2 BDC-NH 2 ) and ferrous ions were synthesized through one-step hydrothermal method. The surface area and pore volume of as-synthesized NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) were 66.48 m 2 /g and 0.09 cm 3 /g, respectively. The excellent photocatalytic performance endows NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) to generate hydroxyl radical ( OH), which then acting as efficiently active sites for azo dye degradation in wastewater. Meanwhile, the outstanding stability ability of NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) indicates the potential candidate for wastewater treatment.

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?A metal–organic Framework (MOF) MIL-101(Cr) with crystal sizes around 20 nm was synthesized and the results were compared to a 300 nm crystal-sized commercially available material. What are the implications of the main findings?Smaller-sized MIL-101(Cr) crystals form a stable insoluble monolayer at the air–water interface with denser, more homogeneous water coverage and packing upon compression, and no visible micrometer-sized aggregates.Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers from the 20 nm MOF show six times lower surface roughness.Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have diverse applications due to their tunable porosity, large surface area, and diverse chemical functionalities. Among them, one of the most researched MOFs is MIL-101(Cr), which, in addition, is very stable in water. We have used a commercially available substance with approximately 300 nm large crystals for the preparation of a sensing nano-thin layer for the emerging water contaminant PFOS, due to its high selectivity towards this compound. Here, we have synthesized 20 nm sized crystals of MIL-101(Cr), which are among the smallest reported, and compared them to the same material with 300 nm sized crystals. The material was characterized by TEM and XPS. It was possible to prepare insoluble monolayers at the air–water interface (Langmuir films), which were characterized with film compression isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, and surface potential measurements. The Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) method was used to deposit monolayers on Si wafers and 434 MHz Surface Acoustic Wave resonator simultaneously. The LB layers were very stable over time. The smaller-sized MIL-101 (Cr) crystals exhibit denser, more homogeneous water coverage and packing upon compression, with no observable 10–100 µm aggregates. LB monolayers from the 20 nm particles have approximately six times lower surface roughness. The LB monolayer is far from being smooth, but this will allow excellent access to the MOF pores by the tested analyte in a chemical sensing application. The lack of research on depositing presynthesized MOFs using probably the best method for nanoarchitectonics—the LB method—is addressed. The 20 nm sized MOF crystals are the smallest deposited by this method so far.

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction has emerged as a promising strategy for sustainable ammonia synthesis, providing the dual advantage of mitigating nitrate pollution and producing value-added green ammonia. However, enhancing intrinsic catalytic activity and catalytic site accessibility remains a challenge for further improving the performance of nitrate electroreduction to ammonia. Herein, a series of gradient Cu2+-doped MIL-53(Fe) electrocatalysts were synthesized via an all-solid-state mechanochemical synthesis method for electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion. MIL-53(Fe)–CuB exhibits a large NH3 production rate of 2391 ± 327 μg h−1 mgcat−1 at −0.6 V vs RHE and a high Faradaic efficiency of 82.1% ± 1.2% at −0.3 V vs RHE in 1 M KOH with 100 ppm NO3−, demonstrating an excellent electrocatalytic performance for nitrate reduction. This work reveals that Cu2+-doping in mechanochemically synthesized Fe-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) boosts nitrate reduction efficiency and selectivity, while broadening research on foreign metal ion anchoring in MOF electrocatalysis.

Water eutrophication caused by phosphate emissions has become a serious environmental issue. In this study, we used the solvothermal method to prepare a novel Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe). Scanning electron microscope observations suggest that Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) consisted of irregular polyhedrons in the size range of tens of micrometers. Spectroscopy results show that cerium atoms (Ce) were successfully doped into the MIL-100(Fe) frameworks. The specific surface area and pore size of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) were 2.6 m 2 /g and 3.4 nm, respectively. Adsorptive kinetics indicated that the pseudo-second-order model with a high correlation coefficient of ( R 2 : 0.9950) fitted better than the pseudo first-order model with R 2 of 0.9436. The adsorptive isotherms showed that for these adsorption reactions, the Langmuir model matched much better than the Freundlich model for this adsorption. These facts suggest that adsorption is chemical sorption, which occurred on a homogeneous surface. The adsorption capacity of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) was as high as 12.03 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) depended strongly on the solution pH, ionic strength, and the coexisted ions. The study also found that the precipitation reaction and complexation interaction might be dominated in the adsorption. This study may contribute to the design of bimetal organic frameworks, and might add new insights into the removal of phosphate.

Advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals are considered as a promising approach for environmental remediation. In this study, TiO 2 @MIL-101(Fe) is successfully fabricated by a facile impregnation method and is used for sodium persulfate (SPS) activation. TiO 2 @MIL-101@SPS combines the advantages of photocatalysis and SPS activation, which shows high removal efficiency for nitrobenzene and methyl orange. In addition, the effect of multiple factors, including light source, SPS amount and catalyst amount, on nitrobenzene degradation have been investigated. Results show that the nitrobenzene degradation efficiency is up to 66.53 % while that of TOC removal is 32.21 % under 4-h visible light irradiation with 30 mg catalyst and 1.6 mM SPS. Moreover, LC-MS have been carried out to study the route of nitrobenzene degradation. Besides, ESR analysis reveals that both ● SO 4 − and ● OH radicals are generated sustainably under visible light irradiation, and more ● OH radicals can be detected owing to the synergic effect of photocatalysis and SPS activation. Interfacial charge transfer effect provides photoinduced electrons for the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle in MIL-101(Fe), which boosts the SPS activation process, resulting in high photocatalytic activity.

The pollution of aromatic organophosphorus flame retardants (aromatic OPFRs) in aquatic environments has drawn great attention over the last few years. Two MIL-101-based metal–organic frameworks (Cr-MIL-101 and Fe-MIL-101-NH2) which possess ordered mesoporous cavities (2.9 and 3.4 nm) and aromatic structures were chosen and prepared to selectively adsorb a typical aromatic OPFR [triphenyl phosphate (TPhP)] from aqueous solution. Pore distribution analysis showed that Cr-MIL-101 and Fe-MIL-101-NH2 had both a mesoporous structure (2–3.5 nm) and microporous structure (1–2 nm), conducive to diffusion and adsorption of TPhP molecules. Compared with Fe-MIL-101-NH2 as well as commercial activated carbon, Cr-MIL-101 showed rapid and efficient adsorption for TPhP, and its initial sorption velocity (v0) calculated from the pseudo-second-order model was up to 568.18 μmol g−1 h−1. The adsorption equilibrium of TPhP on the Cr-MIL-101 was almost achieved within 12 h, while the equilibrium time of other adsorbents required more than 48 h. The study of selective adsorption found that Cr-MIL-101 had a higher sorption amount for aromatic OPFRs than alkyl-OPFRs and other aromatic compounds with different chemical structures. Cr-MIL-101 was able to keep a steady selective adsorption for TPhP in the presence of co-existing aromatic compounds. Based on the analysis of Kow, molecular structure and further density functional theory calculations, hydrophobic interactions may play a dominant role in the selective adsorption process of TPhP, and π–π interactions may be also involved. Cr-MIL-101 exhibits reusability and promising potential to rapidly and selectively remove aromatic OPFR in environmental remediation.

A kind of multi-functional sites metal-organic framework (MOF) composite (MIL-101-IMBr) was successfully prepared by post-synthesis modification of MIL-101 with imidazolium-based ionic liquids. The ionic liquids not only functionalize as basic sites but also provide halide anions, which serve as a nucleophile in cycloaddition reaction. The prepared functional MOF materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption-desorption and CO 2 temperature programmed desorption. The results of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy show that the MIL-101-IMBr composite was successfully synthesized. The N 2 adsorption-desorption results clearly demonstrated that the modified composites still preserve high BET surface area and total pore volume. The composite exhibits high catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of CO 2 with epoxides under mild and co-catalyst free conditions. The conversion of propylene oxide was 95.8% and the selectivity of cyclic carbonate was 97.6% under 0.8 MPa at 80 °C for 4 h. Moreover, the catalyst can be used for at least five times.
