Construction of a built-in electric field in Mo-doped Ni/WO3 to enhance asymmetric charge distribution for efficient overall water splitting

Yang Sun,Fan Yang,Kexin Wei,Siyuan Sun,Li Sun,Junpu An,Chunhui Yu,Qing Guo,Conghan Zhang,Guang Ma,Hongchen Liu,Yongfeng Li

Constructing an asymmetric charge distribution and built-in electric field (BIEF) has proven to be an effective strategy for enhancing the catalytic performance of both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Herein, a Mo-doped Ni/WO3 heterojunction catalyst was immobilized on Ni foam for enhancing the performance of the HER and OER. The constructed Ni/WO3 heterointerface facilitates electron transport, while the incorporation of Mo further amplifies charge asymmetry in the interfacial region. The optimized Mo3–Ni/WO3 catalyst exhibits excellent performance, requiring only 13 mV and 328 mV overpotential to reach current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively. Besides, it maintains stable overall water splitting performance at 100 mA cm−2 for 90 h. The asymmetric distribution of Ni/WO3 interfacial charge is promoted and electron transport is enhanced by Mo doping. Theoretical results show that element doping in the heterostructure turns W sites into additional adsorption centers, optimizing the energetics of H* adsorption during the HER. Mo doping reduces the work function (φ) of Mo3–Ni/WO3, promoting efficient electron transfer and lowering the energy barrier for intermediate formation, thereby enhancing OER activity. This strategic modulation of charge asymmetry in heterojunction architectures provides a new approach for the rational design of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Fe/Mo bimetallic sites-decorated carbonaceous material via 3 electron photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction pathway for ultra-efficient degradation of water pollutants

Bo Shen,Yuxin Hui,Qi Wang,Fei Wang,Derek Hao,Huayue Zhu,Liguo Shen,Hao Du

Photocatalytic three-electron oxygen reduction (3e - ORR) can convert dissolved O 2 into •OH via coupled 2e - /1e - steps, bypassing external H 2 O 2 dosing and the kinetic bottleneck of conventional photo-self-Fenton (PSF) systems. Here, Fe-substituted phosphomolybdate clusters (FePMo) are anchored on a biomass-derived hierarchical tubular carbon (HTCC) to form an HTCC/FePMo heterojunction (HFe) that drives a visible-light self-Fenton process. For tetracycline (TC, 10 mg L −1 ), HFe achieves 99 % removal within 120 min at unadjusted pH 0 = 5.8 ( k obs = 0.026 min −1 ) and 3.6–7.7-fold higher mineralization than either component, while retaining high activity from pH 3–9 and in saline water, natural surface water, and secondary effluent. In a continuous-flow reactor, an HFe/PVDF membrane (0.64 mg cm −2 loading; 2 mL min −1 , HRT 1.23 min) sustains > 90 % TC removal for 120 h. Ecotoxicity is alleviated, with inhibition-zone diameters shrinking from ∼2.3 to ∼0.8 cm ( S. aureus ) and from ∼1.25 to ∼0.7 cm ( E. coli ), and wheat-leaf Fv/Fm recovering to ∼0.73, comparable to the water control. The energy demand is low (EE/O = 0.0031 kWh L −1 ; EE/M = 0.31 kWh g −1 ), supporting a scalable, sustainable route for advanced treatment of refractory wastewater.

Immobilization of cross-linked In-doped Mo(O,S)2 on cellulose nanofiber for effective organic-compound degradation under visible light illumination

Hairus Abdullah,Chi-Ning Hsu,Hardy Shuwanto,Noto Susanto Gultom,Worku Lakew Kebede,Chang-Mou Wu,Chiu-Chun Lai,Ri-Ichi Murakami,Masayuki Hirota,Antonio Norio Nakagaito,Dong-Hau Kuo

Relatively small amounts of In-doped Mo(O,S) 2 (IMS) catalysts (10%, 20%, and 30%) were deposited on cellulose nanofiber (CNF) by cross-linking them with functional groups of siloxane and epoxy to form CNF-IMS hybrid composites. The as-prepared hybrid composites were characterized and tested their performances toward the photo degradations of cationic (MB and RhB) and anionic (MO) dyes. As indium was doped into Mo(O,S) 2 lattice to form solid-solution, the charge transfer and photocarrier separation during the catalytic reaction were simultaneously enhanced as probed with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements, respectively. To ensure the catalyst on CNF was well deposited and recyclable, the hybrid composite was evaluated with a reusability experiment to show the stability performance in degrading organic dyes. It was found the environmentally friendly CNF-IMS hybrid composite was relatively stable during the reusability experiment, indicating no catalyst powder was leached out during the photocatalytic reaction. The photoreaction mechanism was convinced by radical-scavenging experiments to show that hydroxyl and superoxide played essential roles for the organic dye degradations in visible-light illuminated conditions. The cross-linked organic/inorganic hybrid catalyst showed a prospective visible light active material not only to solve the environmental issue due to the leaching of nanoparticles but also to lower the post-treatment/recycling cost of photocatalyst in industrial application.

Formation of Mo–Polydopamine Hollow Spheres and Their Conversions to MoO2/C and Mo2C/C for Efficient Electrochemical Energy Storage and Catalyst

Chunli Wang,Lianshan Sun,Feifei Zhang,Xuxu Wang,Qujiang Sun,Yong Cheng,Limin Wang

Highly uniform hierarchical Mo–polydopamine hollow spheres are synthesized for the first time through a liquid-phase reaction under ambient temperature. A self-assembly mechanism of the hollow structure of Mo–polydopamine precursor is discussed in detail, and a determined theory is proposed in a water-in-oil system. Via different annealing process, these precursors can be converted into hierarchical hollow MoO 2 /C and Mo 2 C/C composites without any distortion in shape. Owing to the well-organized structure and nanosize particle embedding, the as-prepared hollow spheres exhibit appealing performance both as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries and as the catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Accordingly, MoO 2 /C delivers a high reversible capacity of 940 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 775 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 with good rate capability and long cycle performance. Moreover, Mo 2 C/C also exhibits an enhanced electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential for HER in both acidic and alkaline conditions, as well as remarkable stability.

Effective modulating of the Mo dissolution and polymerization in Ni4Mo/NiMoO4 heterostructure via metal-metal oxide-support interaction for boosting H2 production

Yuhao Chen,Kaihang Yue,Jia-Wei Zhao,Zhengyang Cai,Xianying Wang,Ya Yan

Constructing low-cost, high-active and robust heterogeneous hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts with strong metal–metal oxide-support interaction (SMMOSI) is still an urgent challenge for the development of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), especially under high current density (e.g., 1 A cm −2 ). Herein, a hierarchical composite of heterogenous Ni 4 Mo/NiMoO 4 (NiMoO x ) nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on a mesoporous carbon CMK-3 (NiMoO x @CMK-3) is designed as a superior electrocatalyst for HER. Significantly, the strong interaction between heterogeneous NiMoO x NPs and CMK-3 supporting matrix effectively stabilize the catalytic active Ni 4 Mo/NiMoO 4 heterostructure by altering the local geometric and electronic structures, leading to maximumly exposure of active sites and promoted electron transfer ability. The optimized electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding HER activity with an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope of 7 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 27.7 mV dec -1 , respectively, and can steadily operate at 100 mA cm −2 for 800 h. More significantly, owing to these HER merits, the AEMWE configuration with NiMoO x @CMK-3 (−) is also designed, resulting in low cell voltage of 1.965 V@1 A cm −2 and negligible degradation over 400 h@1 A cm −2 . Further ex/in-situ electrochemical spectra evidence that both the partial combined MoO 4 2- from NiMoO 4 and the newly formed MoO 4 2- originating from dissolved Mo in NiMoO x @CMK-3 could boost the fast generation of polymerized Mo 2 O 7 2- that could effectively accelerate the HER process in alkaline conditions by facilitating the formation of active Mo-H* intermediates. Moreover, theoretical calculation results demonstrate the upshifting of d-band center of Mo toward Fermi level for the heterogeneous NiMoO x and the strong charge distribution between the heterointerface could optimize adsorption free energies of H* (ΔG H* ) on the surface of Mo atoms.

Fine-tune the electronic structure in Co-Mo based catalysts to give easily coupled HER and OER catalysts for effective water splitting

Xinhui Zhang,Aiping Wu,Dongxu Wang,Yanqing Jiao,Haijing Yan,Chengxu Jin,Ying Xie,Chungui Tian

The easily coupled HER and OER catalysts are highly desired for the hydrogen evolution by overall water splitting. Here, we design and synthesize Co-Mo based catalysts with adjustable electronic structure by tuning the Mo/Co ratio to give easily coupled, effective HER/OER catalysts. At lower Mo/Co ratio, the Mo component can move up the d-band center of the catalysts, rendering an enhanced capability of activating H 2 O to improve OER performance with a low overpotential of 223 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (η 10 ). Contrastingly, the Co component in the catalyst with higher Mo/Co ratio can induce the downward shift of the d-band center, optimizing the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption to enhance the HER activity (a low η 10 of 52 mV). These HER and OER catalysts with similar components can be coupled for overall water splitting. The electrolyzer can be driven by a solar panel to achieve effective H 2 production.

Electronic and surface engineering of Mo doped Ni@C nanocomposite boosting catalytic upgrading of aqueous bio-ethanol to bio-jet fuel precursors

Junwei Liao,Zhonghai Liu,Yongjun Ling,Qian Zhang,Songbai Qiu,Juwen Gu,Jiajin Li,Huafeng Dong,Jinliang Song,Tiejun Wang

Direct upgrading of aqueous bio-ethanol into higher alcohols is an emerging and highly attractive protocol to produce bio-fuels. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve high yield and selectivity of long-carbon chain higher alcohols, especially for C 8+ alcohols. Herein, the carbon encapsulated NiMo catalysts were designed and fabricated for direct upgrading of aqueous bio-ethanol. The NiMo@C catalyst with Ni/Mo ratio of 6/1 exhibited excellent performance with 89.4 % of bio-ethanol conversion and 42.1C-mol% of higher alcohols yield. The selectivity of C 8-16 products reached 44.7 %, which can be directly hydrodeoxygenated to produce bio-jet fuels. Characterization and DFT calculation results revealed that the doping of Mo tuned the electronic state of Ni and modified the surface properties ( i.e. , hydrophilicity, lipophilicity, and [OH] − adsorption), which enhanced the interaction of active site (NiMo-[OH] − ) with intermediate aldehyde in the oil phase and promoted secondary upgrading reaction to form C 8-16 alcohols. This work provides a promising approach to produce bio-jet fuels by direct upgrading of biomass fermentation ethanol.

Superhydrophilic and superaerophobic Ni–Mo alloy grown on 3D Ni foam with heterogeneous structure as self-standing electrocatalysts toward efficient alkaline HER

Shijun Xu,Yi He,Siming Yan,Teng He,Hongjie Li,Xiao Guo,Yi Fan

Hydrogen energy is the most promising clean energy at present and hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting is the frontier technology of alternative energy in the future. Herein, the Ni–Mo alloy supported with nickel foam (NF) was prepared by hydrogen reduction strategy at high temperature. The catalytic activity and stability of NiMo@NF-x catalyst (x stands for temperature) with multistage (sheet/particle) array structure were studied under different temperatures. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated by contact angle and related electrochemical characterization. It was found that the surface of NiMo@NF-550 catalyst prepared at 550 °C had superhydrophilic and superaerophobic properties, which contributed to the deactivation of bubbles from the surface of the electrode and improved the efficiency of the catalytic reaction. Moreover, the multi-stage array structure of sheet/particle will form a greater specific surface area than the plain sheet structure, offering more reaction sites. These results indicate that the self-supported superhydrophilic and superaerophobic Ni–Mo catalysts have excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution ability.

Efficient and economic transesterification of waste cooking soybean oil to biodiesel catalyzed by outer surface of ZSM-22 supported different Mo catalyst

Wenlu Zhang,Chunrong Wang,Beining Luo,Peihang He,Lei Zhang,Guoqiang Wu

With the aim of developing efficient heterogeneous catalysts for production of clean biodiesel through the transesterification process, a novel Mo catalyst supported on the outer surface of ZSM-22 ( x Mo/ZSM-22) was developed and synthesized successfully with the wet impregnation method. The characterization results showed that the Mo(VI) oxide species were highly dispersed on the surface of catalysts under the Mo-loading not higher than 5%, and the aggregation of the MoO 3 nanoparticles were detected above the Mo-loading of 5%. Meanwhile, the maximum acid intensity was also exhibited in the 5Mo/ZSM-22 catalyst. As a result, the catalytic performance of Mo/ZSM-22 catalysts in the transesterification of waste cooking soybean oil (WCSO) was significantly improved compared with the untreated ZSM-22 catalyst. Especially, the 5Mo/ZSM-22 showed the good activity (X WCSO of 59.29%, S Biodiesel of 99.86%), which was mainly due to the well dispersed Mo species and the larger acidity. Additionally, the 5Mo/ZSM-22 catalyst exhibits good stability and the high biodiesel selectivity , and the fuel properties of the as-synthesized biodiesel meet ASTM D6751 standards. This work provides a useful synthesis strategy of transesterification catalysts for the preparation of biodiesel.

Identification and characterization of two novel antimicrobial peptides from Japanese sea bass (Lateolabrax japonicus) with antimicrobial activity and MO/MФ activation capability

Yi-Xin Wu,Shuai-Yue Hu,Xin-Jiang Lu,Jian-Rao Hu

Piscidins participate in the innate immune response of fish, which aims to eliminate recognized foreign microbes and restore the homeostasis of immune system. We characterized two piscidin-like antimicrobial peptides (LjPL-3 and LjPL-2) isolated from Japanese sea bass ( Lateolabrax japonicus ). LjPL-3 and LjPL-2 showed different expression patterns in tissues. After Vibrio harveyi infection, the mRNA expression of LjPL-3 and LjPL-2 was upregulated in the liver, spleen, head kidney, and trunk kidney. The synthetic mature peptides LjPL-3 and LjPL-2 exhibited different antimicrobial spectra. Furthermore, LjPL-3 and LjPL-2 treatments decreased inflammatory cytokine production while promoting chemotaxis and phagocytosis in monocytes/macrophages (MO/MФ). LjPL-2, but not LjPL-3, displayed bacterial killing capability in MO/MФ. LjPL-3 and LjPL-2 administration increased Japanese sea bass survival after V. harveyi challenge, which was accompanied by a decline in bacterial burden . These data suggested that LjPL-3 and LjPL-2 participate in immune response through direct bacterial killing and MO/MФ activation.

Yiming Hu,Wenchang Li,Lin Li,Jinhong Wu,Shizhan Sheng,Huihua Wang

Developing impressive and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key for large-scale application of hydrogen production . Herein, a series of non-noble Ni-Mo-P coatings were achieved in the ChCl-EG electrolyte through a facile electrodeposition method under different experimental conditions. The 0.6Ni-0.21Mo-0.066 P coating fabricated at 30 mAcm −2 exhibits an impressive HER catalytic activity for delivering a current density of 10 mAcm −2 at only an overpotential of 57 mV in 1 M KOH electrolyte, ascribing to the synergistic effect of Ni, Mo and P elements and regulated electron structures, as well as large electrochemical active areas produced in the ChCl-EG electrolyte. Moreover, the 0.6Ni-0.21Mo-0.066 P coating demonstrates a pronounced electrocatalytic stability toward HER in the long-term test due to its obviously small inners tress. The outstanding HER performance of 0.6Ni-0.21Mo-0.066 P coating, along with facile and scalable fabrication method, highlights the potential application in the field of electrocatalytic water splitting.

Honeycomb structured Co−Ni−Mo alloy deposits prepared from ethylene glycol systems and used as highly active and durable electrocatalysts for HER

Xinkuai He,Zhousi Hu,Ruqing Guo,Yiren Li,Luye Wu

One of the most critical challenges in the field of hydrogen production through water electrolysis technique is the design, development and manufacture of electrode materials with low-cost, highly electrocatalytic activity and stability. We employ the galvanostatic deposition technique to prepare the honeycomb structured Co−Ni−Mo alloy electrocatalysts from ethylene glycol (EG) system, in which the honeycomb structure presents highly intrinsic electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochemical behavior of Co 2+ , Ni 2+ and Mo 6+ reductions and the co-deposition behavior of Co-Ni, Co-Mo, Ni-Mo and Co-Ni-Mo alloys is reported. Benefiting from the composition engineering by alloying with Mo atoms, as well as the simultaneous existence of a suitable honeycomb structure, these Co 58 Ni 23 Mo 19 deposits obtained at an optimal parameter exhibit prominent electrocatalytic durability and activity with a η 10 of 51 mV for HER in a 1.0 M KOH. More importantly, the formation model of the honeycomb structured Co-Ni-Mo alloy deposits is proposed. This work suggests a simple and economical method for the preparation of a 3-dimensional catalytic electrode.
