An air purifier that provides clean air will be popular if it is portable and capable of removing volatile organic chemicals and reducing exposure to bacteria. Herein, ultra-thin and dense Bi 2 WO 6 nanoflakes grown on W meshes specialize in offering abundant oxygen vacancies due to Na + driving laminar splitting. Under visible lights , the photogenerated carriers streaming along the ultrathin Bi 2 WO 6 surface produce bountiful reactive oxygen species for mineralizing VOCs and sweeping bacteria. Enriched with •O 2 - and •OH, a 15 cm*5 cm Na-Bi 2 WO 6 mesh can completely degrade 30 ppm toluene in 0.45 dm 3 reactor in 1 hour without producing any toxic intermediates like benzene, and its efficacy only decayed by 4% after a continuous 14-hour run. A cup-shaped air purifier was assembled with the Na-Bi 2 WO 6 mesh, enabling the rapid elimination of 1 ppm toluene, 2 ppm formaldehyde, and bacteria within a 120 dm 3 test space.

Lithium silicate (Li 4 SiO 4 ) adsorbents garnered considerable interest for CO 2 capture due to their high adsorption capacity and stable cycling performance. While Na 2 CO 3 doping has been shown to enhance its the adsorption capacity at low CO 2 concentrations, the resulting samples exhibited poor cycling stability. Previous research has predominantly focused on the adsorption process, often overlooking the desorption kinetics. This study addressed this gap by investigating the desorption kinetics and decay mechanisms of Na-doped Li 4 SiO 4 to develop a version with long-term cycling stability from fly ash. The Na/Si ratio and desorption conditions were optimized. Optimal cycling stability was achieved at R Na/Si = 0.25 and a desorption temperature of 700 °C, yielding an initial adsorption capacity of 29.45 wt% and retaining 83 % of this capacity after 56 cycles. Phase analysis, desorption kinetics modeling, and examination of kinetic parameter evolution over multiple cycles uncovered the decay mechanisms in Na-doped Li 4 SiO 4 . Active phase Li 3 NaSiO 4 ′s poor reversibility contributed to performance degradation. Furthermore, molten LiNaCO 3 played a dual role during desorption: it accelerated the diffusion of Li + /Na + /CO 3 2– but hindered CO 2 diffusion. When the LiNaCO 3 content was low, the diffusion of Li + /Na + /CO 3 2– became the rate-limiting step; conversely, when the content was high, its reaction with CO 2 to form C 2 O 5 2- impeded diffusion, thus becoming the new rate-limiting step.

Thanks to their high conductivity and theoretical capacity, transition metal selenides have demanded significant research attention as prospective anodes for sodium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, their practical applications are hindered by finite cycle life and inferior rate performance because of large volume expansion, polyselenide dissolution, and sluggish dynamics. Herein, the nitrogen-doped carbon (NC)-coated FeSe2 nanoparticles encapsulated in NC nanoboxes (termed FeSe2@NDC NBs) are fabricated through the facile thermal selenization of polydopamine-wrapped Prussian blue precursors. In this composite, the existing nitrogen-doped dual carbon layer improves the intrinsic conductivity and structural integrity, while the unique porous yolk–shell architecture significantly mitigates the volume swelling during the sodium/desodium process. Moreover, the derived Fe–N–C bonds can effectively capture polyselenide, as well as promote Na+ transportation and good reversible conversion reaction. As expected, the FeSe2@NDC NBs deliver remarkable rate performance (374.9 mA h g–1 at 10.0 A g–1) and long-cycling stability (403.3 mA h g–1 over 2000 loops at 5.0 A g–1). When further coupled with a self-made Na3V2(PO4)3@C cathode in sodium-ion full cells, FeSe2@NDC NBs also exhibit considerably high and stable sodium-storage performance.

Flower-like assembly of ultrathin nanosheets composed of anatase and bronze TiO2 embedded in carbon is successfully synthesized by a simple solvothermal reaction, followed with a high-temperature annealing. As an anode material in sodium-ion batteries, this composite exhibits outstanding electrochemical performances. It delivers a reversible capacity of 120 mA h g–1 over 6000 cycles at 10 C. Even at 100 C, there is still a capacity of 104 mA h g–1. Besides carbon matrix and hierarchical structure, abundant interfaces between anatase and bronze greatly enhance the performance by offering additional sites for reversible Na+ storage and improving the charge-transfer kinetics. The interface enhancements are confirmed by discharge/charge profiles, rate performances, electrochemical impedance spectra, and first-principle calculations. These results offer a new pathway to upgrade the performances of anode materials in sodium-ion batteries.

The electrochemical oscillation (EO) exhibited by Cu anodes during dissolution in H 3 PO 4 /Cl - mixed electrolytes significantly influence the efficacy of processes such as metal surface treatment, precision electroplating, and electrochemical mechanical polishing(ECMP). While Cl - ions have been identified as the key factor inducing oscillations, the mechanism governing their interaction with coexisting cations remains unclear. This study, integrating electrochemical analysis, anodic film surface characterisation, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, reveals the decisive regulatory role of cations in oscillation mechanisms and corrosion film properties. The findings indicate that, when the influence of Cl - ion concentration is excluded, Na + ions primarily fulfil charge-balancing functions, while Ni 2+ and Al 3+ ions exert synergistic regulatory effects at the active interface. Ni 2+ ions form pure CuCl films through strong adsorption, prolonging oscillation periods. Conversely, Al 3+ ions promote the formation of CuCl/Cu(II)/AlO 4 /Al(OH) x composite films, accelerating film dissolution and shortening periods. The specificity of cations directly determines the stability and dissolution kinetics of films on the Cu anode surface. This study establishes the role of cations as key variables in the electrolytic process, providing a theoretical foundation for understanding EOs and passivation mechanisms.

Abstract The isothermal dissolution equilibrium method was employed to investigate the phase equilibrium and phase diagram of the ternary system (Na+, Cs+//Cl––H2O) at 313.15 K. This ternary system features the coexistence of double salts and solid solutions. The solid solution, formulated as ([Cs1–x(Na·H2O)x]Cl), was characterized by wet-residue analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry (TG–DSC). Three representative equilibrium compositions of the solid solution and their respective proportions within the crystallization region were determined, and the results were compared with those of the two pure salts (NaCl and CsCl). The physicochemical property diagrams indicate that both density and refractive index increase with rising cesium chloride content. A comparative phase diagram of the ternary system (Na+, Cs+//Cl––H2O) was constructed over the temperature range from 298.15 to 318.15 K. The results show that as temperature increases, the crystallization region of NaCl expands, whereas the crystallization regions of CsCl·2NaCl·2H2O and [Cs1–x(Na·H2O)x]Cl simultaneously contract.

Large volume changes cause a series of complicated problems in alloy-type anodes, such as pulverization, exfoliation and the capacity decay which results. Therefore, solutions for the problems caused by large volume changes in sodium ion battery (SIB) anodes are urgently needed. Herein, we report a novel route to encapsulate Sb2O3/Sb nanoparticles (Sb2O3/Sb-NPs) within a graphene shell nanostructure (Sb2O3/Sb@graphene) via microwave plasma irradiation of Sb(CH3COO)3 and a subsequent graphene growth procedure. The designed structure, Sb2O3/Sb@graphene NPs anchored on carbon sheet networks (CSNs), provides an ultra-thin, flexible graphene shell to accommodate the volume changes of Sb2O3/Sb, and thus demonstrates excellent cycling stability (92.7% of the desodiation capacity was retained after 275 cycles), a long cycle life (more than 330 cycles) and a good rate capability (220.8 mA h g−1 even at 5 A g−1). The stability could be compared to that of commercial graphite in lithium ion batteries.

Yarn-ball-shaped P2-Na 2/3 Fe 1/2 Mn 1/2 O 2 nanofiber cathode material is synthesized by a magnetic-assisted electrospinning method. Based on the electrospinning method, an electromagnetic-field is performed to keep the nanofibers rotating to form the yarn-ball-like architecture. XRD result indicates that the sample is a pure P2-type Na 2/3 Fe 1/2 Mn 1/2 O 2 phase with good crystallization. SEM results show that the diameter of the balls is about 10–50 µm, and the balls are composed of nanofibers with a diameter of 200–400 nm. This special architecture is beneficial to increase the Na + diffusion speed and tap-density of nanofiber material. Electrochemical tests show that the sample has a high discharge specific capacity of 218.6 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C rate, and exhibits good rate capability and excellent cycling performance.

The push for high performing electronic devices with long battery lives has rapidly advanced the field of energy storage systems. Niobium oxides have stood out as promising candidates to improve the storage and rate performance of anodes in lithium- and especially sodium-ion batteries due to their larger interplanar lattice spacing and patulous framework. Herein, we report the first synthesis of a nanosized metal/metal oxide hybrid composite coated by N-doped carbon and anchored onto reduced graphene oxide (NbO/Cu@NC-RGO) through in situ carbonizing of Cu-doped polyoxoniobate precursors. The strong synergistic effects between the uniformly distributed NbO/Cu hybrid nanoparticles, the N-doped carbon coating layer, and graphene substrates not only ensure efficient electron and ion transport, but also boost pseudocapacitive charge storage. The resulting composite exhibits a maximum reversible charge capacity of 580 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1 when utilized in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and 203 mA h g−1 when utilized in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). For SIBs in particular, a long-lifetime of 1012 cycles is observed when cycled at a high current density of 800 mA g−1. This work represents a promising step forward in the design and preparation of metal oxide composite anodes for LIBs and SIBs.

Metal additives can greatly improve the catalytic oxidation of photocatalysts for degrading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including formaldehyde. Different type metal, including Pd, Cu and Na, were doped in TiO 2 (B) nanosheets with oxygen vacancy, and the degradation rate of HCHO were evaluated using the above catalysts. A series of theoretical and experimental studies on these modified TiO 2 (B) photocatalysts were carried out. The presence of O v leads to the appearance of impurity levels under the conduction band of TiO 2 (B), which could enhance the absorption in the visible spectral range by reducing the band gap and inhibiting the recombination of photo-induced charges. TiO 2 (B) with oxygen vacancies and doped with Na is used as a photocatalyst for degrading HCHO, and the removal rate up to 80% within 50 min. It is quite important to match the bandgap structure of photocatalysts and redox potential of O 2 /•O 2 − . Doping of excessive metals is detrimental to the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. The intermediates and mechanism of photocatalytic oxidation of HCHO were investigated by in situ DRIFTS.

Nucleoside radicals are key intermediates in the process of DNA damage, and alkali metal ions are a common group of ions in living organisms. However, so far, there has been a significant lack of research on the structural effects of alkali metal ions on nucleoside free radicals. In this study, we report a new method for generating metalized nucleoside radical cations in the gas phase. The radical cations [Ade+M-H]•+(M = Li, Na) are generated by the 280 nm ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) of the precursor ions of lithiated and sodiated ions of 2-iodoadenine in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT ICR) cell. Further infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectra of both radical cations were recorded in the region of 2750–3750 cm−1. By combining these results with theoretical calculations, the most stable isomers of both radicals can be identified, which share the common characteristics of triple coordination patterns of the metal ions. For both radical species, the lowest-energy isomers undergo hydrogen transfer. Although the sugar ring in the most stable isomer of [Ade+Li-H]•+is in a (South, syn) conformation similar to that of [Ado+Na]+, [Ade+Na-H]•+is distinguished by the unexpected opening of the sugar ring. Their theoretical spectra are in good agreement with experimental spectra. However, due to the flexibility of the structures and the complexity of their potential energy surfaces, the hydrogen transfer pathways still need to be further studied. Considering that the free radicals formed directly after C-I cleavage have some similar spectral characteristics, the existence of these corresponding isomers cannot be ruled out. The findings imply that the structures of nucleoside radicals may be significantly influenced by the attached alkali metal ions. More detailed experiments and theoretical calculations are still crucial.

We developed a series of anti-fouling anion exchange membranes (AEMs) by in-situ interpenetration of an ionomer of N -methylimidazole ionizing poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (IM-QPPO) to lateralized gradient cross-linked hydrogel of Ca-Na alginate (CA). The CA surfaces repel negative-charged organic pollutants because of their inherent hydrophilicity and electronegative property. SEM and EDX characterizations reveal that the micron-sized anti-fouling CA layers are bonded firmly with the ionomer bulk by the interpenetration. The anti-fouling AEMs have qualified basic properties of thermal stability, water uptake and swelling ratio, area resistance and permselectivity for electrodialysis (ED) processes. IM-QPPO-0.10CA with optimal interpenetrating structure exhibits the highest current efficiency (η) of 88.88% and the lowest energy consumption (EC) of 2.53 kWh kg −1 NaCl among the group, which are comparable to those of commercial AMX (η = 89.38%, EC = 2.20 kWh kg −1 NaCl). IM-QPPO-0.10CA shows the strongest anti-fouling ability, which is confirmed by the lowest ascent speed of transmembrane voltage and no irreversible membrane-structure damages during the fouling tests. Moreover, the fouled IM-QPPO-0.10CA recovers 99.60% of the origin η value with an EC increase of 0.10 kWh kg −1 NaCl after immersion in NaCl solution. The properties of IM-QPPO-0.10CA are promising for the application of anti-fouling ED AEMs.
