Preparation and characterization of PVA membrane modified by water-soluble hyperbranched polyester (WHBP) for the dehydration of n-butanol

Qian-Zhi Zhang,Bing-Bing Li,De Sun,Li-Jun Zhang,Da-Yong Li,Ping Yang

Water-soluble hyperbranched polyester (WHBP) was synthesized through the esterification reaction of the fourth generation hyperbranched polyester and maleic anhydride. A novel cross-linked WHBP/PVA membrane was prepared by adding WHBP into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution with glutaraldehyde as the cross-linker. WHBP was characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), while WHBP/PVA membranes were characterized by ATR-FTIR, X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis, mechanical capacity, and water contact angle. Testing results showed that maleic anhydride was grafted on the surface of WHBP; compared with PVA membrane, WHBP/PVA membrane had lower crystallinity, weaker mechanical strength, higher hydrophilicity, and better thermal stability. Sorption and diffusion behaviors of n -butanol and water in WHBP/PVA membrane were investigated; pervaporation performances of WHBP/PVA membrane were studied through the dehydration of the 90 wt % n -butanol aqueous solution at 40°C. With an increase of the WHBP content from 0 to 30 wt %, both n -butanol uptake and n -butanol diffusion coefficient first decreased then increased; n -butanol flux first decreased from 10 to 2 g·m −2 ·h −1 then increased to 213 g·m −2 ·h −1 ; both sorption selectivity and diffusion selectivity first increased then decreased; separation factor first increased from 88 to 1309 then decreased to 16. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Facile Strategy To Prepare Light-Weight PVA Membrane Based on Schiff Base Derivatives and MWCNTs for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Jun Li,Lu Qi,Huihao Li

The carbon-nanotube-doped Schiff bases (CDSBs) and their iron complexes (CDSI) were synthesized by the in situ polymerization and coordination reaction. The phase structure and morphology of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. In particular, it can be found that the diamagnetic substance CDSF turns into paramagnetic CDSI after doping Fe3+. Furthermore, the eminent electrical conductivity and microwave electromagnetic loss behavior of CDSI shed light on organic–metal ion complexes (OMICs) as a promising lightweight absorbent. The feasibility of this strategy was demonstrated by the successful fabrication of the CDSI/MWCNTs/PVA composites membrane. The reflection loss (RL) of the electromagnetic wave arrives at the lowest value −18.6 dB at 10.32 GHz, and the effective bandwidth (RL below −10 dB) could reach 5.8 GHz (8.1 to 13.04 GHz) with the thickness of 0.54 mm and the surface density of 0.44 kg/m2. Such excellent low weight, low thickness, and broadband electromagnetic wave absorption membrane may pave the way for new applications of OMIC-derived materials.

Md. Zahid Hasan,Chuanghua Xu,K.Z.M. Abdul Motaleb,Md Foysal Ahmed,Jie Zhuang,Sirui Tan,Jolanta Janutėnienė,M. Mahbubul Bashar,Hu Tu,Lei Luo,Ruquan Zhang

Conductive hydrogel has drawn great concern in wearable sensors, human-machine interfaces, artificial intelligence (AI), health monitoring, et al. But it still remains challenge to develop hydrogel through facile and sustainable methods. In this work, a conductive, flexible, bendable and self-healing hydrogel (PBCM) composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), borax, cellulose microfibers (CMFs) and MXene nanosheets was fabricated by a simple and efficient strategy. The carboxylated CMFs were extracted from waste ramie fibers via a one-pot ammonium persulfate oxidation method. The crystallinity and tensile strength were increased 70 % and 4 times due to the addition of CMFs and MXene compared to the pristine PVA-borax hydrogel. The incorporation of MXene nanosheets acts as multifunctional cross-linkers and energy transfer platform, promoting the electrical conductivity, stretchability and bendability of hydrogel remarkably. The PBCM-2 hydrogel exhibited the maximum electrical conductivity of 0.81 S/cm. Additionally, the dynamic borate ester linkage imparts self-healing ability to the hydrogel. The resulting PBCM-2 hydrogel demonstrated excellent resistance to fire and pH response properties. Moreover, it showed sensitivity in monitoring various human physiological movements, including finger, wrist, elbow, knee bending and drinking water, indicating its potential for wearable sensing applications like health care and sports training.

Nowadays, hydrogels have been extensively and increasingly applied in the field of wound dressings in terms of their high biocompatibility and adjustable functionality. Bacterial infection can serious hinder wound healing the incomplete contact between hydrogel and wound increased the risk of infection. Thus, hydrogel wound dressings with antibacterial and can self-adapt to wound are urgently desired and still a challenge. Herein, a series of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) reinforced hydrogel wound dressings (CPH hydrogels) based on collagen/polyvinyl alcohol (COL/PVA) were designed and constructed, which with polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) as antibacterial agent and borax as crosslinking agent. The dynamic cross-linking of reversible borate ester bond and hydrogen bonds endowed the CPH hydrogels with high adaptability and dynamic self-healing properties. The hydrogel exhibited good blood and cell biocompatibility, which with hemolysis rate lower than 5.0 % and cell survival rate higher than 90 %. The hydrogel also possessed excellent antibacterial ability for both E. coli and S. aureus by destroying the integrity of bacterial membrane. More importantly, the hydrogel with the formulation of 5 % COL, 5 %/PVA, 4 % borax and 1.75 % HPMC successfully achieved in promoting wound healing and accelerated collagen deposition, which provided a promising candidate to serve as wound dressing for wound healing.

Optimization of starch foam extrusion through PVA polymerization, moisture content control, and CMCS incorporation for enhanced antibacterial cushioning packaging

Fengsong Liu,Yifang Cao,Jiahao Ren,Yijia Xie,Xinglong Xiao,Yucong Zou,Hong Bai,Xiaowei Zhang,Ying Chen

Melt strength and moisture content are critical parameters in starch foam extrusion, as they dictate bubble expansion dynamics, which subsequently determine the foam's properties. Despite continuous advancements in the development and application of starch foams, challenges such as water resistance, mechanical strength, and antibacterial activity remain unresolved. This research investigates the influence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymerization and moisture content on the properties of extruded foam while also exploring the potential for enhancing antimicrobial functionality by incorporating carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) into conventional starch foams. The findings underscore the significance of melt strength and intermolecular entanglements in shaping foam characteristics, confirming that bioactive components effectively improve hydrophobicity, foaming characteristics, and antibacterial capabilities. Moreover, by precisely regulating PVA polymerization and moisture content, it became feasible to optimize foam properties and achieve the desired performance. Specifically, foam with a moisture content of 12 % and a PVA polymerization degree of 1700 exhibited exceptional performance, including the highest foaming ratio of 45.62, the minimal water absorption rate of 6.31 %, and the greatest recovery rate of 88.95 %. Furthermore, increasing CMCS concentrations substantially enhances the antibacterial properties of the foam, demonstrating its potential for application in antibacterial cushioning packaging and emphasizing its versatility and practicality.

Development of a tannic acid and silicate ions functionalized PVA-starch composite hydrogel for in situ skeletal muscle repairing

Longkang Li,Huipeng Li,Huan Zhou,Zhentian Diao,Yanjie Bai,Lei Yang

The repair capacity of skeletal muscle is severely diminished in massive skeletal muscle injuries accompanied by inflammation, resulting in muscle function loss and scar tissue formation. In current work, we developed a tannic acid and silicate ions functionalized tissue adhesive poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-starch composite hydrogel, referred as PSTS. It was formed based on the hydrogen bonds of tannic acid to organic polymers, as well as silicate-tannic acid ligand interaction. PSTS could be gelatinized in minutes at room temperature with crosslinked networks formation, making it applicable for injection. Further investigations revealed that PSTS owned skeletal muscle comparable conductivity and modulus to act as a temporary platform for muscle repairing. Moreover, PSTS could release tannic acid and silicate ions in situ to inhibit bacterial growth, induce vascularization, and reduce antioxidation, paving the possibility to create a favorable microenvironment for skeletal muscle regeneration and tissue fibrosis control. The in vivo model confirmed that PSTS could enhance muscle fibers regeneration and myotubes formation, as well as reduce infection and inflammation risk. These findings thereby implied the great potential of PSTS in the treatment of formidable skeletal muscle injuries.

Comparative Study on the Adsorption Characteristics of Anionic, Cationic, and Non-Ionic Dyes by PVDF-PVA/GO Composite Membrane

Liu Liao,Ren Chunji,Zhang Wuhuan,Fan Meikun,Zhang Jianqiang

The printing and dyeing wastewater has high chromaticity, biorefractory properties, and significant toxicity. In this study, PVDF-PVA/GO was synthesized for dyes’ adsorption with various chemical properties. Incorporating graphene oxide (GO) into the composite substantially enhanced the hydrophilicity and electronegativity of the PVDF membrane. Results indicated that the adsorption efficiencies for rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) are higher than those of methyl orange (MO) and bromocresol green (BCG). At an initial pH of 8, the maximum adsorption capacities for RhB and MB were 11.81 and 9.25 mg/g, respectively, while MO and BCG indicated considerably lower capacities of 0.59 and 0.63 mg/g, respectively. The cyclic utilization of the PVDF-PVA/GO revealed minimal degradation in adsorption efficiency. The adsorption kinetics of the four dyes primarily follow intra-particle diffusion mechanisms, resulting in the binding of dye molecules to the PVDF-PVA/GO membrane through electrostatic interactions. Notably, competitive adsorption phenomena were observed in mixed dye systems, especially between RhB and MB. Comparative analyses indicated an increased adsorption capacity for MB in the mixed dye system, accompanied by a notable reduction in the adsorption capacity of RhB. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the remediation of printing and dyeing wastewater. Graphical abstract

Amine vapor-responsive ratiometric sensing tag based on HPTS/TPB-PVA fluorescent film for visual determination of fish freshness

Qian Han,Min Yang,Zexin Zhang,Xinwen Bai,Xiuying Liu,Zhenhua Qin,Wei Zhang,Pingping Wang,Lijie Zhu,Zaixi Shu,Xuepeng Li

In this study, amine vapor-sensitive films with ratiometric fluorescence attributes were developed. The pH-sensitive fluorescein 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (HPTS) and its tetraphenylethylene derivative (TPB) were selected as ratiometric indicators and incorporated into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to produce HPTS/TPB-PVA films. The films responded well to amine vapors, and the interference of aromatic vapors did not substantially affect the fluorescence signals of the films. Under UV light at a wavelength of 365 nm, the fluorescence of the films changed from dark pink to light pink and finally to yellow when the freshness of the fish was visually checked during storage. In addition, the color difference values of the films showed a positive correlation with the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), ranging from 12.7 to 24.8 mg/100 g at 25 °C and 8.4 to 25.6 mg/100 g at 4 °C, respectively. This indicates that fluorescent films have good potential for quantifying fish freshness in the near future when connected to an automatic data processing system based on color differences.

Phosphorus-doped carbon dots as an effective flame retardant for transparent PVA composite films with enhanced UV shielding property

Runying Gao,Xindan Yi,Xinyu Liu,Haojie Wang,Lingzhi Wang,Birong Zeng,Guorong Chen,Yiting Xu,Conghui Yuan,Lizong Dai

In order to endow polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film with the functionalities of highly-effective flame retardancy and optical properties, the strategy of doping phosphorus into carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and then using the P-containing CQDs as flame retardant is worthy investigating. In this work, m -phenylenediamine (MPD), 2-carboxyl ethyl(phenyl)phosphinic acid (HPP) and phytanic acid (PA) were used as carbon source and phosphorus sources to synthesize three kinds of CQDs, which were named as MPD-CQDs, MPD-HPP-CQDs and MPD-PA-CQDs respectively. Subsequently, the CQDs-PVA composite films were prepared by blending CQDs with PVA solution through casting process, the flame retardancy and UV shielding properties of the PVA-CQDs composite films were tested by kinds of techniques such as vertical burning tests (UL-94), limited oxygen index (LOI), UV–visible spectroscopy and so on. In addition, the residual char structure of the composite films was investigated by SEM and EDS. The results showed that compared with phosphorus-free MPD-CQDs, the two P-containing CQDs, both MPD-HPP-CQDs and MPD-PA CQDs, produced better flame-retardant effect on the PVA film. As the percentage of phosphorus increased, the flame retardancy of CQDs-PVA composite film greatly enhanced. When 15% MPD-HPP-CQDs and 15% MPD-PA-CQDs were added to PVA, the LOI value of MPD-HPP-CQDs-PVA and MPD-PA-CQDs-PVA was 27.8% and 31.5% respectively, meanwhile, the UL-94 rating reached VTM-1 and VTM-0, respectively. Due to the intact layer of P-containing condensed phase, the gas diffusion and oxygen transportation were hindered, which slowed down the combustion and promoted the further carbonation. In addition, both MPD-HPP-CQDs-PVA and MPD-PA-CQDs-PVA composite films exhibited good UV shielding properties without affecting the transparency of PVA itself.

Jiajun Chen,Tiantian Yu,Gang Zheng,Wenhui Ma,Chaohui Wang,Xiaoxiao Huang,Shan Fan,Yong Zhang

Heteroatom doping and good porous structure play a decisive role in the energy storage characteristic of graphene-based supercapacitors. In this study, nanocellulose/N, S co-doped graphene composite hydrogel (NC-NSGHs) electrode materials were successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. During the reaction, ammonium sulfate was used as heteroatom source and reducing agent, nanocellulose (NC) was used as spacer and electrolyte storage container, and high a concentration of graphene oxide (GO, 4 mg mL −1 ) was used to increase the bulk density of the material. The target product NC-NSGHs have ideal pore structure, good hydrophilicity, and rich heteroatom functional groups. The aqueous symmetrical supercapacitors (SCs) assembled by NC-NSGH-50 exhibits high gravimetric specific capacitance (0.3 A g −1 , 280.6 F g −1 ), volumetric specific capacitance (0.3 A g −1 , 406.9 F cm −3 ), excellent rate performance (20 A g −1 , 81.06%) and superior cyclic performance. In addition, we added GO and NC into the PVA-KOH electrolyte system and developed a new gel electrolyte PVA-GN-KOH (PGNK). The flexible solid-state supercapacitors (FSSCs) fabricated by PGNK and NC-NSGHs display a high specific capacitance of 189.9 F g −1 (0.5 A g −1 ). Even at 20 A g −1 , the rate performance of the device can reach 60.24%. The emergence of NC-NSGHs and PGNK provides new ideas for high-performance portable supercapacitors.

Synthesis of geopolymer composites utilizing PVA-modified basalt fibers and foundry waste: Fundamental properties, cracking resistance and fracture toughness

Yuwei Zhang,Chengliang Zhou,Yafeng Gong,Fei Wu,Yuheng Liu,Jiaxiang Song,Fuyu Wang

Coal gangue/slag-based geopolymer composites (CSGC) have garnered significant attention in sustainable construction due to their low-carbon footprint, but their high brittleness remains a critical limitation. This study addresses this challenge by modifying basalt fiber (BF) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to enhance CSGC. A novel porosity detection program, with an average accuracy exceeding 98 % for pores larger than 10 pixels (0.4 mm), was developed to analyze pore evolution. Combined with a multi-scale testing approach, the study evaluates shrinkage, fracture toughness, compressive strength, and flexural strength of fiber-reinforced CSGC. Results revealed that PVA coating enhanced fiber-CSGC matrix bonding via chemical crosslinking, such as O-Al-O bonds, and mechanical interlocking, achieving 15.9 % and 19.1 % improvements in the 28-d flexural and compressive strength of modified basalt fibers (MBF)-reinforced CSGC, respectively. Acoustic emission (AE) analysis indicated that fibers shifted the dominant cracking mode from shear to a mixed tensile-shear mode (20.99 % tensile cracks), thereby enhancing CSGC toughness. Moreover, double-K fracture model analysis, based on digital image correlation (DIC) test results, confirmed that MBF outperforms unmodified fibers in toughening effects, with increases of 50.0 % and 32.4 % in initiation and unstable fracture toughness, respectively. This study presents an effective strategy for reducing brittleness in geopolymers through interface-engineered fiber reinforcement, which is expected to promote the development of high-performance, sustainable construction materials.
