Textiles have broad application prospects in the fields of flexible sensors and intelligent wearable devices due to their excellent breathability, softness, and structural elasticity. Piezoelectric sensors have become a hot topic in the field of wearable applications due to their ability to perform long-term sensing and detection. This article enhances the performance of composite materials by adding polydopamine (PDA) to improve the interaction between polymer matrix and nanofillers, and optimizes the composite nanofiber membrane synthesized by electrospinning polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and barium titanate (BTO) nanoparticles. The content of β-phase in the optimized PVDF–BTO nanofiber membrane reached 81.58%. In bending mode, its open-circuit voltage reaches 10.36 V. Under vertical pressure conditions, when the pressure is 2.914N, the voltage of the sensor reaches 13.35 V, and the sensitivity of the nanofiber membrane is 2.918VN −1 , with a good linear relationship. This flexible piezoelectric sensor demonstrates various potential applications, including facial recognition, speech recognition, motion monitoring, etc. This research provides a simple and convenient way to develop high-performance self-powered wearable electronic products.

Piezoelectric devices are becoming increasingly attractive in areas such as wearable electronics, mobile environmental sensors, and health monitoring due to their unique capability to harvest discrete mechanical energy. Nevertheless, most piezoelectric materials are fabricated into low-dimensional products, which limits the performance breakthroughs and application prospects of these devices. Here, a series of polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) doped with dopamine hydrochloride@BaTiO3/MXene/chitosan (PVDF-B/MXene/CS) composite aerogel piezoelectric devices with outstanding output performance were fabricated by combining electrospinning and freeze-drying techniques. Among them, the PVDF-B/MXene/CS composite aerogel-based piezoelectric devices with electrodes exhibited rather better output performance compared to those without electrodes, while the electrodeless piezoelectric devices demonstrated excellent piezoelectric response under various stress modes. The electrodeless piezoelectric devices maintained a stable voltage over 1800 cycles and achieved the maximum power output of 4.25 nW with an external resistance of 100 MΩ. Furthermore, the electrodeless piezoelectric device was capable of charging capacitors with varying capacities and could easily illuminate a small light emitting diode (LED) light by manual tapping. These piezoelectric devices showed tangible and stable signals regarding mechanical stimuli monitoring, such as wrist bending, finger tapping, and pedal movements. This work not only expands the range of aerogel-based piezoelectric materials but also showcases their immense potential in the field of piezoelectric devices.

Dip coating technology is often used for hydrophilic modification of PVDF membrane surfaces due to its significant modification effect, simple process and low cost. Nevertheless, the relatively feeble binding forces between coating molecules and between the coating and the substrate membrane often raise concerns about the stability of modified membranes. This study utilized PAA and Sac-100 to develop a hydrophilic and negatively charged coating to improve the anti-fouling characteristics of PVDF membranes in the process of oil/water separation. Two modification reagents underwent ring opening crosslinking reaction and ultimately deposited on the surface of PVDF membranes in the form of a network polymer, thereby solving the stability problem of the modification coating. After the modification, the surface microstructure of the membranes remained unchanged, while the average pore size fell from 0.37 μm to 0.32 μm. The water contact angle of the modified membrane decreased to 39° suggesting an excellent hydrophilic property. The modified PVDF membrane exhibited exceptional resistance to fouling in the oil/water separation experiment, demonstrating a consistent permeance value of 212 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 that was four times higher than that of the original membrane. Following the cleaning process, the permeance of the modified membrane could be restored to a level of 74.5 %.

High hydrophobicity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane surface results in adsorption of oil droplets and membrane fouling . A hydrogel coating with crosslinking network of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), pyrogallol (PG) and Fe(III) based on PVDF membrane was proposed. Hydrogen bonds between PVA and PG in water were regulated by ethanol to form a uniform hydrophilic hydrogel coating on PVDF membrane. Chelation between PG and Fe 3+ significantly enhanced hydrogel adhesion. The surface energy of the developed PVDF-PVA/PG-Fe 3+ membrane was 39.96 mJ·m −2 , 2.71 times that of the pristine PVDF membrane, while its adhesion to oil is close to 0 μN. The permeate flux reached 1341 L·m −2 · h −1 at 0.1 bar for separating isooctane-in-water emulsions with good separation efficiency (>99 %) and cycling stability. The developed membrane could also effectively separate petroleum ether-in-water and dodecane-in-water emulsions.

Lead-free double perovskites (DPs) have superior phase stability and optical properties, which make them competitive for future applications in illumination and displays. However, the preparation of DPs was mainly based on high-temperature heating and hydrochloric acid as a solvent to form powders, which increased the risk and cost of the preparation process and limited its further application. In this study, the growth of Cs2NaInCl6: Sb3+ DPs in polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) films was achieved using an in situ fabrication strategy with DMSO as the solvent. The prepared Cs2NaInCl6: Sb3+@PVDF composite films (CFs) can achieve a bright blue emission under 302 nm irradiation. To achieve the optimal luminescent performance of CFs, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of Cs2NaInCl6: Sb3+@PVDF CFs under various in situ preparation conditions was compared. In addition, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of CFs was increased from 0.72% to 83.77% by adjusting the doping amount of Sb3+, and the fluorescence lifetimes t1 and t2 were 131.08 and 1048.52 ns, respectively. Temperature-dependent PL spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that these excellent optical properties are derived from the self-trapped excitons (STEs) at the [SbCl6]3– octahedron and [InCl6]3– octahedron connected via Cl–Na–Cl. The CFs also demonstrated excellent environmental stability, maintaining a relatively stable PL intensity even under conditions of water immersion, high temperatures, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Finally, we used the CFs to assemble a blue light-emitting device (LED), which showed good and stable blue emission performance at different currents. This work can provide a new idea for preparing DPs, which is conducive to promoting their commercial application in high-performance optoelectronic devices.

High dielectric permittivity ( ε ) but low loss polymeric composites have presented wide applications. To elevate the overall dielectric performances in raw zinc oxide (ZnO)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), the prepared aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) encapsulated ZnO core-shell particles were incorporated into the polypropylene (PP) modified PVDF blend to generate high ε and breakdown strength ( E b ) but low loss nanocomposites. The Al 2 O 3 shell’ impacts on the dielectric performances of the ZnO/PVDF-PP were investigated. The results indicate that the insulating Al 2 O 3 shell induces concurrent interparticle polarization and intraparticle polarization leading to evidently enhanced ε , and effectively restrains the leakage current resulting in simultaneously suppressed loss and elevated E b in the nanocomposites. Further, the introduced alumina shell can induce traps and capture charge carrier thus resulting in enhanced E b . Through facilitating the intra-particle polarization and repressing the charge migration, the 50 wt% ZnO@Al 2 O 3 /PP-PVDF present a much higher ε (16) and E b (11 kV/mm) but lower dielectric loss (0.08), respectively, far exceeding 9.6, 9 kV/mm and 0.18 at 100 Hz for the unmodified ZnO nanocomposites. Further, the dielectric parameters of the nanocomposites can be effectively tuned via tailoring the Al 2 O 3 shell thickness. The fitting via the Havriliak-Negami equation theoretically interpret the experimental results and uncover the underlying multiple polarization mechanisms. This work provides deep insight into the design and development of flexible polymeric nanodielectrics with eminent integrated dielectric properties for appealing applications in electronic device and power system.

To mitigate the profound impact of Microcystis aeruginosa algal bloom outbreaks on aquatic ecosystems and human health, a piezoelectric T-BaTiO 3 /Ag 3 PO 4 -PVDF composite photocatalyst (T-BTO/AP-PVDF) was successfully synthesized in this study. The catalyst inactivated 97.12% of Microcystis aeruginosa within 4 h by the combined effect of ultrasound and sunlight, and the inactivation rate remained above 88% after five cycles of reuse, which exhibits excellent inactivation effectiveness and stability. Under the conditions of piezo-photocatalytic, the analysis of the physiological properties of algal cells showed that T-BTO/AP-PVDF produced a large amount of •OH, which were active species that could effectively inactivate the algal cells and promote the degradation of organic matter, thus preventing the occurrence of secondary pollution. The composite photocatalysts were characterized using XRD, SEM, XPS, FTIR, PFM, and WCA. Combined with the results of quenching experiments, possible mechanisms for the inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa by T-BTO/AP-PVDF were proposed. The application results in actual water bodies further proved that T-BTO/AP-PVDF is a new method for effectively inhibiting cyanobacterial bloom outbreaks and shows promising potential for application.

Incorporating perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is an effective method to improve the performance of PVDF-based piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs). The conventional techniques are typically performed via a two-step process, namely, the synthesis of PNCs and then introducing them into the PVDF matrix. Here, we report the exploration of flexible PENG with boosted performance by in situ growth of Zr-doped Cs2Ag0.3Na0.7InCl6 double perovskites (ZCDP) within the PVDF matrix (PENGin). The as-constructed PENGin delivers an open-circuit voltage of 44.4 V and a short-circuit current density of 10 μA cm–2, both of which are more than 2 times those of PENGs built by a conventional two-step process and ∼6 and ∼9 times the best ones of in situ grown Cs2InI6@PVDF-based PENGs ever reported, respectively. The enhanced performance could be ascribed to the optimized spontaneous polarization, thanks to the uniform dispersion of PNCs with a solid ZCDP/PVDF interface within the matrix, which collectively facilitates the electron migration and aggregation, thereby establishing a strong built-in electric field to amplify the dipole spontaneous polarizability. Additionally, the PENGin exhibits excellent performance with robust stability in pressure sensing, wearable energy harvesting, and DC power applications, representing its promise toward practical use.

Incorporating porous structures into flexible piezoelectric materials has proven to be an effective strategy to enhance the output performance, but the fabrication processes are often intricate or environmentally harmful. In this study, natural sucrose with substantial hydroxyl groups was firstly introduced into polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) as a phase formation inducer, and subsequently removed by the dissolution of water as a pore formation agent, yielding a regular porous structure. Furthermore, porosity of the PVDF-HFP film could be simply modulated by adjusting the mass ratio of sucrose to PVDF-HFP. At low porosity levels, the dielectric constant of PVDF-HFP decreased with the increase of porosity, reaching the minimum at the critical threshold porosity of 38.8 %. Owing to the increased β-phase content and the decreased dielectric constant, the sensitivity of the porous PVDF-HFP film based piezoelectric sensor was tripled to 117 mV/N, which held promise for detecting tactile and slip signals in mechanical arms.

The fabrication of stable and highly antifouling membranes for the separation of various oil/water mixtures remains challenging. A facile and universal coating strategy is developed to modify the chemically inert PVDF separation membrane. The membrane is first coated with a nanolayer of mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) from dopamine solution to provide a reactive amino surface. The universally and strongly adhered PDA mediation layer (PVDF/PDA) is then covalently anchored with a mono-layer of a cell outer membrane mimetic and reactive random copolymer (PMEN) to confer excellent antifouling nature. The PMEN coated PVDF membrane (PVDF/PDA/PMEN) demonstrates better superhydrophilicity by changing the water contact angle to 0° in 5 s and stronger underwater superoleophobicity with an oil contact angle of ∼170°. More excitingly, the sliding angle of the underwater oil droplet on the membrane is as low as 0.5°. Furthermore, the PMEN coated membrane shows great advantages over other modifications by way of enhanced separation and excellent antifouling performances for both oil-in-water emulsions and adhesive high concentration crude oil/water mixtures. This facile and universal coating strategy for the fabrication of a stable and cell-membrane-mimetic antifouling membrane has great potential in efficient oil/water separation, even in the separation of adhering crude oil/water mixtures.

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes are robust and continue to attract great attention due to their fascinating properties, despite their potential issues regarding stability and selectivity in aqueous-phase processing. That being said, however, the functional moieties of GO could be used for membrane surface modification, while ensuring simultaneous removal and recycling of industrial organic dyes. Herein, we present a versatile porous structured polyvinylidene fluoride–graphene oxide (PVdF-GO) nanofibrous membranes (NFMs), prepared by using simple and straightforward electrospinning approach for selective separation and filtration. The GO nanosheets were distributed homogeneously throughout the PVdF nanofiber, regulating the surface morphology and performance of PVdF-GO NFM. The PVdF-GO NFMs possesses high mechanical strength and surface free energy (SFE), consequently resulting high permeation and filtration efficiency as compared to PVdF NFM. The selectivity (99%) toward positively charged dyes based on electrostatic attraction, while maintaining rejection (100%) for negatively charged dye from mixed solutions highlight the role of GO in PVdF-GO NFM, owing to uniform pores and negatively charged surface. In addition, the actual efficiency of NFMs could be recovered easily up to three consecutive filtration cycles by regeneration, thereby assuring high stability. The high permeation, purification and filtration efficiency, good stability and recycling of PVdF-GO NFMs are promising for use in practical water purification and applications, particularly for selective filtration and recycling of dyes.

Passive radiative cooling which dissipates heat from surfaces by reflecting sunlight and emitting radiation towards outer space, has garnered growing attention as an eco-friendly cooling strategy with zero-energy consumption. However, few studies focus on low-cost and multifunctional composite film fabricated by a straightforward and environmentally friendly method that is crucial for their large-scale applications. Herein, we introduce a facile, efficient, and scalable approach to fabricate a hydrophobic and polymer-dielectric poly (vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene (P(VDF-HFP)@PVA hydrogel Janus film (DPP), exhibiting exceptional radiative cooling and thermal management capabilities for diverse practical applications. With the introduction of ZnO, DPP showcases the optical capability with a solar reflectance of ≈93 % and an infrared emittance of ≈96 %, endowing it with remarkable radiative cooling performance. The synergistic integration of hydrogel phase change and radiation cooling capabilities offered by the P(VDF-HFP) layer enables the DPP to achieve a subambient cooling of 8.62 °C under direct sunlight. Moreover, when applied to the thermal management of electronic devices and fruit preservation due to the phase change property, the DPP effectively reduced surface temperatures by 10 °C and 15.5 °C respectively. Its simplicity and versatility suggest that it could be widely adopted for daytime passive radiation cooling, thereby expanding its practical applications across various fields.
