An efficient electrochemical sensor based on three-dimensionally interconnected mesoporous graphene framework for simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Lili Xiao,Biwei Wang,Li Ji,Fu Wang,Qunhui Yuan,Guangzhi Hu,Angang Dong,Wei Gan

Recently, ordered mesoporous carbon has displayed attractive performance in electrochemical catalysis and sensing, benefiting from its rich and tunable pore texture. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor based on a three-dimensionally interconnected mesoporous graphene framework (MGF) was developed for simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution. Attributable to the abundant three-dimensional mesopores and good electrical conductivity of MGF, as well as the synergistic effect of Nafion and in-situ plated bismuth films, a highly sensitive determination of mixed metals at a Bi/MGF-Nafion/GCE is achieved. The proposed sensor exhibits wide linear responses for Cd(II) and Pb(II), ranging from 2–70   μg   L −1 and 0.5–110   μg   L −1 , respectively. The detection limits are about 0.5 and 0.1   μg   L −1 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively, which are about 6 and 100 times lower than the drinking water standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, Bi/MGF-Nafion/GCE has been applied for the detection of mixed metals in real water samples. The satisfying recoveries (87.5-109.2%) and relative standard deviations (RSD, 3.7-8.6%) make the proposed electrode a promising candidate for rapid and on-site monitoring of environmental metallic pollutants.

Carrier effects of face mask-derived microplastics on metal ions: Enhanced adsorption by photoaging combined with biofilms, exemplified with Pb(Ⅱ)

Shuai Tang,Shengjia Ma,Lujian Lin,Yimei Ding,Xiaoting Zhang,Xiaowei Wu,Qun Zhang,Md. Nahid Pervez,Chengjin Cao,Yaping Zhao

Face masks have emerged as a significant source of microplastics (MPs) under the influence of biotic and abiotic interactions. However, the combined effects of abiotic photoaging and biofilm-loading on mask-derived MPs as carriers of metal ions are not clear. We investigated the Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption onto polypropylene (PP) and polyurethane (PU) mask-derived MPs treated by photoaging, biofilm-loading, and both combinations, evaluating the composite risks. PU mask-derived MPs (1.15 7.47 mg/g) exhibited greater Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption capacity than PP mask-derived MPs (0.84 2.08 mg/g) because of the presence of intrinsic carbonyl functional groups. Photoaging (30.5%, 88.4%), biofilm-loading (110.7%, 87.1%), and both combinations (146.7%, 547.0%) of PP and PU masks enhanced Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption compared to virgin mask-derived MPs due to the increase of oxygen-containing functional groups. High-throughput sequencing indicated that the structural morphology and chemical composition of masks significantly affected the microbial community. Adsorption mechanisms involved electrostatic force and surface complexation. A combination of photoaging and biofilms increased the ecological risk index of mask-derived MPs in freshwater, showing the risk level to be high (PP mask) and very high (PU mask). This research highlights the crucial role of photoaging combined with biofilms in controlling metal ion adsorption onto mask-derived MPs, thereby increasing the composite risks.

Conversion of Phosphogypsum into Porous Calcium Silicate Hydrate for the Removal and Recycling of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from Wastewater

Gangan Wang,Chaoyi Chen,Junqi Li,Yuanpei Lan,Xin Lin,Jiahang Chen

The discharge of lead and cadmium wastewater, along with the pollution caused by phosphogypsum, represents a particularly urgent environmental issue. This study employed a straightforward hydrothermal method to convert phosphogypsum into porous calcium silicate hydrate (P-CSH), which was then used to remove and recover Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. The adsorption capacities of P-CSH for Pb(II) and Cd(II) were notably high at 989.3 mg/g and 290.3 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption processes adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Due to identical adsorption sites on P-CSH for both Pb(II) and Cd(II), competitive interaction occurred when both ions were present simultaneously. Additionally, the adsorption efficacy was minimally impacted by the presence of common coexisting cations in wastewater. The dominant mechanisms for removing Pb(II) and Cd(II) via P-CSH were chemical precipitation and surface complexation. Moreover, the adsorbed heavy metals were efficiently separated and reclaimed from the wastewater through a stepwise desorption process. The primary components of the residue from stepwise desorption were quartz and amorphous SiO2. Following dissolution via pressurized alkaline leaching, this residue could be recycled for synthesizing P-CSH. This research offered a new strategy for the resourceful use of phosphogypsum and heavy metal wastewater.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, and ecological and health risks of Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds in shrimp and fish from aquaculture ponds

Pingxiu Zeng,Hongmei Hu,Yuanchao Wang,Jinhua Liu,Heyong Cheng

Aquaculture organisms may accumulate metals to induce health risks. Compared with the focus on total contents, chemical-specific risk assessment makes reasonable but is rare. Herein, we elucidated occurrence of twelve metal compounds in shrimp and fish (edible muscle, one of major metal-containing and generally targeted organs), water, sediment, and feedstuff from two aquaculture ponds in Zhejiang Province (one of the major aquatic production and consumption areas). We detected Cd(II) (0.6 −71.4 μg kg –1 in 100 % prawn but 63 % fish), methylmercury (MeHg, 0.5 −7.1 μg kg –1 in 100 % fish but 61 % shrimp), Pb(II) (0.4 −1.0 μg kg –1 in 57 % fish and 39 % prawn), and trimethyltin and triethyltin (0.4 −0.7 μg kg –1 ), which were much lower than the maximum limits in China. Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) up to 0.38 mg kg –1 were main contaminants in sediment while Cd(II) and Pb(II) up to 0.44 mg kg –1 were major contaminants in feedstuff compared with Cd(II), Sn(II), Hg(II), and Pb(II) majored in water at ng L –1 levels. Ecological risks were low in water but high for tributyltin in sediment. Additionally, light bioaccumulation of Cd(II) from sediment for prawn and methylmercury from feedstuff/sediment for crucian and bighead carp was induced. We also found light health risk of triethyl- and trimethyl lead, and Cd(II) (to children) associated with fish/shrimp consumption (edible muscle). This study proved high necessity of chemical-specific assessment, and shall trigger increasing interest to more metallic compounds in a wide range of uncultured and cultured plants and animals.

MXene-supported Co3Ti and single-atom Co catalyst activated PMS for efficient removal of Pb-EDTA: The involvement of Co (Ⅳ)

Haoran Song,Longyu Chen,Yi hang Xu,Chen Li,Xuewei Hu,Yingjie Li,Shugen Liu,Jianhong Huang,Qun Zhao,Jie Li,Senlin Tian

Activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by MXene-supported Co 3 Ti and single-atom Co catalyst (Co@MXene) achieved the efficient decomplexation of lead-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Pb-EDTA) and the recovery of lead (Pb) over the pH range of 3.0–9.0. The removal efficiency of Pb-EDTA reached up to 93.6 % within 30 min and total Pb was completely removed within 15 min. The coordination structure differences between Co 3 Ti and single-atom Co induced their various electron transfer pathways with PMS, in which Co 3 Ti brought key effect to the generation of Co (Ⅳ), while single-atom Co and regenerative Co (II) were responsible for the generation of HO and SO 4 − and 1 O 2 , More importantly, the oxygen transfer reaction from O-Co 3 Ti to Co 3 Ti-O and the reducibility of MXene triggered the regeneration of low-valent Co. This study proposed a novel mechanism of Co (Ⅳ) generation and low-valent Co regeneration, which improved the understanding of the electron transfer pathways of Co@MXene/PMS oxidation process.

Heavy metal adsorption onto graphene oxide, amino group on magnetic nanoadsorbents and application for detection of Pb(II) by strip sensor

Menglu Sun,Peng Li,Xuexue Jin,Xingrong Ju,Wenjing Yan,Jian Yuan,Changrui Xing

Paper-based lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) are an interesting on site technique for detecting heavy metals. Pb(II) is one of the toxic heavy metals in polluted environmental water. This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of three Fe3O4-based nanoadsorbents that show different performance to Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), As(V), Zn(II), Fe(III), Ca(II), Mg(II), Mn(II), and Al(III) when a GO or an amino group is introduced. Compared with Fe3O4, Fe3O4-GO showed higher adsorption percentage to many heavy metal ions under slightly acid condition. The negative surface on Fe3O4@NH2 had favourable interactions for four main divalent metal ion adsorption, which followed the order: Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Hg(II) > Cd(II). Combined with antibody-functionalized AuNPs showed high affinity and specificity toward Pb(II), an Fe3O4@NH2-based LFIA with five times greater sensitivity for detecting Pb(II) in lake water was developed. The cut-off value of this Fe3O4@NH2-combined LFIA method for detection Pb(II) in lake water was 20 ng/mL and the detection result for 10 ng/mL Pb(II) was obviously observable by the naked eye or a strip reader machine. This detection strategy could be readily adapted for other small molecules or biomolecules as an ultrasensitive screening tool.

Unlocking the Myths of Molecular Bonding State in Modulating Oxidation and Anderson Localization for Inorganic Sn/Pb-based Perovskite Solar Cells

Qin Li,Junjie Ma,Xuanchen Xu,Peng Gao,Meng Cai,Mengqi Han,Jing Yang,Yiqiang Zhang,Yanlin Song

The improvement of photovoltaic and stability performance of tin (Sn)-based halide perovskite solar cells is impeded by notorious oxidation issues and Anderson localization. Despite previous implements in antioxidation through the incorporation of Lewis base additives, there still exist ongoing uncertainties surrounding its complex interaction mechanisms. A perplexing phenomenon regarding accelerated oxidation in acrylic acid is discovered that deviates from conventional Lewis base–acid reaction. The underlying insights into the deprotonation of acrylic acid followed by the formation of a “tripod” ionic bonding form are provided, which results in amplifying the delocalization effect of electrons of Sn 2+ . Furthermore, with the assistance of acrylamide and acrolein, synergistic enhancement in terms of the antioxidation and suppression of Anderson localization can be achieved — a concept referred to as “Dual Synergistic Engineering”. This suppresses the oxidation of Sn 2+ and reduces Sn 4+ content by ≈76%. Meanwhile, the diffusion length is prolonged significantly from 195.9 to 458.9 nm. The optimized all-inorganic Sn/Pb-based perovskite solar cells exhibit a power conversion efficiency of above 14% with enhanced stability. These findings provide an alternative viewpoint for comprehending the impact of chemical interaction on oxidation and crystal growth in Sn/Pb-based perovskites.

Uncovering the disposable face masks as vectors of metal ions (Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ), Sr(Ⅱ)) during the COVID-19 pandemic

Lujian Lin,Bo Yuan,Binghuang Zhang,Hanyi Li,Ran Liao,Hualong Hong,Haoliang Lu,Jingchun Liu,Chongling Yan

The demand for disposable face masks (DFMs) increased sharply in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, information regarding the underlying roles of the largely discarded DFMs in the environment is extremely lacking. This study focused on the pristine and UV-aged DFMs as vectors of metal ions (Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ), and Sr(Ⅱ)). Further, the aging mechanism of DFMs with UV radiation as well as the interaction mechanisms between DFMs and metal ions were investigated. Results revealed that the aging process would help to promote more metal ions adsorbed onto DFMs, which was mainly attributed to the presence of oxygen-containing groups on the aged DFMs. The adsorption affinity of pristine and aged DFMs for the metal ions followed Pb(Ⅱ) > Cd(Ⅱ) > Sr(Ⅱ), which was positively corrected with the electronegativity of the metals. Interestingly, we found that even if DFMs were not disrupted, DFMs had similar or even higher adsorption affinity for metals compared with other existing microplastics. Besides, regarding environmental factors, including salinity and solution pH played a crucial role in the adsorption processes, with greater adsorption capacities for pristine and aged DFMs at higher pH values and low salinity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory further confirmed that the pristine DFMs interacted with the metals mainly through electrostatic interaction, while electrostatic interaction and surface complexation jointly regulated the adsorption of the metals onto aged DFMs. Overall, these findings would help to evaluate environmental behaviors and risks of DFMs associated with metals.

Chemical composition-induced evolution of the structure, domain and electrical properties of Sm-doped (1 − x)Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–xPbTiO3

Haoran Yu,Jian Guo,Jiajia Wang,Ji Zhang,Shan-Tao Zhang

As the two typical basic binary solid solutions of the relaxor-PbTiO3 family, Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) has been widely investigated, whereas Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PNN-PT) has not. Here, 1.5 mol% Sm-doped (1 − x)Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–xPbTiO3, (1 − x)PNN–xPT:0.015Sm with x = 0.33–0.39, ceramics have been prepared and the chemical composition-induced evolution of crystal structure, domain, and electrical properties investigated systematically. With increasing PT content, evolution of the rhombohedral–tetragonal structure was observed. A rhombohedral–tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary occurred around x = 0.36–0.37, which showed a peak piezoelectric property with piezoelectric constant d33 = 531 pC N−1 and planar electromechanical coupling factor kp = 0.37 at room temperature. At the same time, the x = 0.36 composition showed improved ferroelectric behavior with remanent polarization Pr = 13.4 μC cm−2 and coercive field Ec = 3.2 kV cm−1. Interestingly, different from its PMN-PT counterpart, there is no temperature-driven phase transition between room temperature and the Curie temperature for (1 − x)PNN–xPT:0.015Sm. These parameters indicated that the PNN-PT system is worthy of more attention and is a promising platform for further development of high-performance piezo/ferroelectric materials.

Layer-by-layer assembly of nanocomposite interlayers on a kaolin substrate for enhancing membrane performance of Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal

Wei Zhou,Pute Wu,Lin Zhang,Shengyu Yao,Delan Zhu,Yaohui Cai

Developing an ultra-thin polyamide selective layer with sufficient mechanical robustness on a highly porous ceramic substrate is challenging for removing heavy metal ions from wastewater. We synthesized a reliable ceramic-polyamide membrane by assembling nanocomposite interlayers of alumina and carbon black on the kaolin substrate. The surface morphology, pore size distribution, and roughness of ceramic substrates were improved by introducing the nanocomposite interlayer. The corresponding optimized water flux , Pb(II), and Cd(II) removal efficiency are 2.75 L m −2 h −1 , 98.44%, and 97.51%, respectively, which are better than those of the polyamide films constructed directly on the ceramic substrate. This facile structure provides more active sites for forming ultrathin polyamide layers with satisfactory mechanical robustness. This paper provides a new perspective for fabricating efficient heavy metal ions filters.

Kinetics and Size Effects on Adsorption of Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) Onto Polyethylene, Polypropylene, and Polyethylene Terephthalate Microplastic Particles

Han Xiaoxin,Wang Shiyu,Yu Xue,Vogt Rolf D.,Feng Jianfeng,Zhai Lifang,Ma Weiqi,Zhu Lin,Lu Xueqiang

Due to its small size, large specific surface area and hydrophobicity, microplastics, and the adsorbed contaminants may together cause potential negative effects on ecosystems and human beings. In this study, kinetics and size effects on adsorption of Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) onto PE, PP and PET microplastic particles were explored. Results indicated that the PE and PET microplastics have the higher adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) than that for PP microplastic. The adsorption capacity was affected by microplastic types and metal species. Among the three metals, Pb(II) had the largest adsorption amount on microplastic particles, especially on PET particles. Moreover, the adsorption capacities of microplastics increase with the decrease of particle size. The metal adsorption capacity of <0.9 mm microplastics is greater than that of 0.9–2 mm and 2–5 mm microplastics. The size effect on metal adsorption was largest for PE microplastic. More attention should be paid in case of the coexistence of heavy metals and tiny PE and PET microplastics in the environment.

Thermoelectric performance of nanostructured In/Pb codoped SnTe with band convergence and resonant level prepared via a green and facile hydrothermal method

Wenqi Lu,Tiantian He,Shuang Li,Xinru Zuo,Yao Zheng,Xunuo Lou,Jian Zhang,Di Li,Jizi Liu,Guodong Tang

SnTe is considered as a promising alternative to the conventional high-performance thermoelectric material PbTe, which inspired the thermoelectric community for a while. Here, we design a green, facile and low-energy-intensity hydrothermal route without involving any toxic or unstable chemicals to fabricate SnTe-based thermoelectric materials. Ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and enhanced thermoelectric performance are achieved via the combination of band engineering and nanostructuring. Enhanced Seebeck coefficient and power factor are induced by converging the band structure and creating resonant levels due to Pb and In doping. More importantly, due to the reduced grain sizes, nanoparticles, and dual-atom point defect scattering, ultralow lattice thermal conductivity was obtained in the bulk samples fabricated by the hydrothermal route. Benefiting from the enhanced power factor and significantly reduced thermal conductivity, the peak ZT is enhanced to ∼0.7 in In/Pb codoped SnTe, a 60% improvement over pure SnTe.
