Pt/Co and Au are organized into well-defined nanostructures by a simple and mild method, such as dumbbell-like nanorods and core–shell nanorods. The resultant dumbbell-like nanorods show a superior performance in the electrooxidation of formic acid, as compared with core–shell nanorods, Pt-tipped gold nanorods, and commercial Pt/C. This result can be attributed to electronic effect between Au and Pt, heteroatom effect of Co, irregular surface at the tips, and the interface effect.

Constructing Pt skin on intermetallics has been confirmed as an efficient strategy to boost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. However, there still lacks a systematic study on revealing the influence of low-Pt-content intermetallic substrates (L12-PtM3). In this paper, Pt skin-encapsulated low-Pt-mole-fraction L12 Cu3Pt has been constructed (denoted as Pt-o-Cu3Pt/C) and compared with its disordered analogue (denoted as Pt-d-Cu3Pt/C). The L12 substrate shows a contracted lattice structure and provides Pt-o-Cu3Pt/C with an excellent specific activity of 1.73 mA cm–2, which is 1.4- and 8.4-fold higher than that of Pt-d-Cu3Pt/C and commercial Pt/C, respectively. Density functional theory calculations reveal that this superior performance is attributed to the more favorable oxygen adsorption energy of surface Pt atoms. Furthermore, the lower formation energy of L12 Cu3Pt combined with the enhanced antioxygenation of Pt provide Pt-o-Cu3Pt/C with a superior durability, showing only a 12.5% loss in mass activity after 5000 potential cycles. Therefore, it is suggested that L12 atomic ordered structure with a low Pt fraction is a promising substrate for building high-performance Pt-skin catalysts for ORR.

Pd@Pt core–shell nanocrystals with ultrathin Pt layers have received great attention as active and low Pt loading catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the reduction of Pd loading without compromising the catalytic performance is also highly desired since Pd is an expensive and scarce noble-metal. Here we report the epitaxial growth of ultrathin Pt shells on PdxCu truncated octahedra by a seed-mediated approach. The Pd/Cu atomic ratio (x) of the truncated octahedral seeds was tuned from 2, 1 to 0.5 by varying the feeding molar ratio of Pd to Cu precursors. When used as catalysts for ORR, these three PdxCu@Pt core–shell truncated octahedra exhibited substantially enhanced catalytic activities compared to commercial Pt/C. Specifically, Pd2Cu@Pt catalysts achieved the highest area-specific activity (0.46 mA cm−2) and mass activity (0.59 mA μgPt−1) at 0.9 V, which were 2.7 and 4.5 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, these PdxCu@Pt core–shell catalysts showed a similar durability with the commercial Pt/C after 10 000 cycles due to the dissolution of active Cu and Pd in the cores.

The porphyrin aggregate is recognized as an attractive candidate for developing artificial light-harvesting systems. Using 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP), the porphyrin aggregates with different morphologies (sphere, rod and flake) are controllably prepared by the surfactant-assisted self-assembly reaction, and then synthesize the ternary bionic-system (e.g. porphyrin composites). These composites are characterized by scanning-electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and spectroscopic technology. The combinatorial technique consisted of ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and scanning electrochemical microscopy (UV–vis/SECM) is used to record SECM approach curves of porphyrin photocatalysis under visible light illumination at the specific zones, where morphology-dependent porphyrin composite is recognized to be distributed evenly on ITO surface. Heterogeneous photoelectron transfer rates ( k eff ) are given by simulating SECM approach curves. It is suggested that rod-like porphyrin aggregate composite has highest photocatalytic efficiency with the kinetics rate to be 8.624 × 10 −2 cm s −1 , the largest k eff of which is obtained at the excitation wavelength of 469 nm. These findings are also proved by photocatalytic decomposition test of pollutants (methyl orange). It is indicated that one-dimensional nanostructure is advantageous for separation of electrons and holes and directional transmission of photoelectron.

The supported Pt-based catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic oxidation activity towards toluene, while the Pt metal was prone to aggregation at high temperatures, leading to catalyst sintering deactivation. A combination strategy was presented to enhance the reactivity and lifespan of catalysts for toluene catalytic oxidation in this work, which involved regulating the morphology and microstructure of Pt@D-Beta through a combination of recrystallization Pt confinement and zeolite dealumination to improve the stability and water resistance of the catalyst. The designed Pt@D-Beta catalyst with T 90 (temperatures for 90 conversion of toluene) at 158 °C was prepared by combining carrier dealumination and secondary crystallization method, which was 22 °C lower than that of traditional Pt/Beta. Importantly, the Pt@D-Beta catalyst exhibited excellent cycling performance and long-term stability, and great water resistance. After 5 cycle tests, the toluene conversion could also be maintained at ∼ 85 % for at least 50 h with slight activity loss. The results of SEM and XPS show that a combination of recrystallization Pt confinement and zeolite dealumination could improve the reduction performance of the catalyst, increase the dispersion of Pt on zeolite and oxygen mobility, and improve the catalytic performance of the catalyst for toluene. The toluene catalytic degradation on Pt@D-Beta was researched via in situ DRIFTs ( in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the hydroxyl groups on the catalyst can provide active oxygen for toluene catalytic oxidation, followed the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. This synthesis combination strategy is expected to provide an effective method for designing efficient zeolite limited noble metal catalysts for catalytic degradation of VOCs.

WO 3 -based optical hydrogen sensors, while advantageous due to their ignition-free operation and resistance to electromagnetic interference, face limitations due to slow response kinetics in hydrogen gasochromic processes. This study presents a novel post-treatment method using aqueous sulfuric acid, which significantly enhances the response speed of mesoporous Pt/WO 3 films. After treatment, the films exhibit an ultrashort response time of 2.4 s towards 4% H 2 /Ar, a marked improvement from 7.1 s prior to the treatment. The treated films also show excellent reversibility of 120 gasochromic cycles. The adsorbed acid layer is proved to be the cause of accelerated hydrogen gasochromic response. This exceptional performance is attributed to increased proton conductivity and the high porosity of the mesoporous structure. A modified model is proposed for the acceleration effect by acid post-treatment. Our post-treatment method represents a significant advancement in the reliable detection of hydrogen leaks at room temperature.

Developing highly-efficient and stable Pt-based catalysts towards alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) offers a promising strategy for future renewable energy. In this work, radio-frequency (RF) cold plasma-prepared N-doped MWCNTs were adopted to support Pt nanoparticles (NPs) (Pt/NCNTs) via pretreating MWCNTs with RF nitrogen plasma and combining with traditional thermal reduction method. The as-synthesized Pt/NCNT featured an ultra-small size of Pt NPs (1.5 nm) and plentiful doped nitrogen, exhibiting ultra-low overpotential of 28 mV@10 mA cm −2 and ultra-high mass activity of 3.2 A mg Pt −1 @100 mA in 1 M KOH solution, which are superior to those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. This is because RF plasma can realize fast, high-efficient and specific N-doping structure of MWCNTs. The lone electron pairs of N species (mainly pyri-N and pyrr-N) on MWCNTs surface transfer to the empty orbitals of Pt NPs, forming a strong coordination effect between Pt and nitrogen, thereby boosting the alkaline HER catalytic performance.

Pt-based nanocatalysts supported on carbon materials have exhibited remarkable catalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, these catalysts still encounter challenges such as low utilization efficiency, weak binding strength with substrate and proneness to detachment from it. Consequently, we explore the potential application of electron-rich polymer as carrier in high efficiency ORR catalysts, the uniformly distributed Pt-PANI catalyst is successfully synthesized by taking advantage of ion-exchange property of polyaniline (PANI). As an emerging catalyst for ORR, Pt-PANI shows excellent ORR performance in acidic solution, the vertically aligned PANI nanoarrays accelerate the ion diffusion in electrolyte and promote the charge transfer at the interface, improving the catalytic activity of low-loading Pt-based catalyst. In short, this work provides a novel alternative beyond conventional carbonaceous materials for the selection of carriers for Pt-based catalyst.

Nobel metal nanoparticles have attracted intense attentions in biological immunoassay due to the inhereted good catalytic activity. In this study, a new kind of nanocomposite of ternary Pt@Pd@Ru nanodendrite-decorated graphene oxide (GO–Pt@Pd@Ru) was prepared as a signal label for ultrasensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). With a sandwich type immunoassay, the established electrochemical immunosensor showed highly sensitive detection performance towards CEA in a linear range (0.1 pg mL−1 to 9 ng mL−1) with an ultralow detection limit of 0.05 pg mL−1. The enhancing detection performance could be attributed to: ternary Pt@Pd@Ru nanodendrites have exhibited superior electrochemical reduction activity towards H2O2, then GO–Pt@Pd@Ru can combine all generated electrochemical reduction current towards H2O2 by the decorated Pt@Pd@Ru nanodendrites, which can significantly amplify the detection signal.

Mesoporous Pt–Nb2O5 photocatalysts with high photocatalytic hydrogen production activity were synthesized by a one-step method. The mesoporous structure of the as-made samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms and transmission electron microscopy. Pt–Nb2O5 exhibited higher hydrogen production activity than pure Nb2O5 and 0.8-Pt–D–M–Nb exhibited the best photocatalytic activity. In addition, Pt–Nb2O5 synthesized by a one-step method exhibited higher photocatalytic hydrogen production activity than that prepared by an incipient wetness impregnation method; 0.8-Pt–D–M–Nb exhibits a H2 evolution rate of 9.79 mmol h−1 g−1, while 0.8-Pt–I–M–Nb2O5 exhibits a H2 evolution rate of 7.73 mmol h−1 g−1. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Pt–Nb2O5 was predominantly attributed to the efficient separation of photoinduced electrons and holes.

Drug-loaded nanocarriers, especially polymeric micelles, have attracted much attention in recent years, but their application is still limited due to their systemic toxicity and unsatisfactory tumor delivery efficiency through intravenous administration. In this study, we demonstrated an implantable prodrug micelle/small drug molecule co-loaded nanofiber strategy for enhanced local cancer treatment. A reduction-responsive Pt(IV) prodrug-backboned micelle, as a prodrug of bioactive Pt(II), and DCA were co-electrospun into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers. The prepared Pt(IV) prodrug-backboned micelle/DCA fibers exerted a synergistic effect on cancer cells. In contrast to systemic administration of chemotherapeutic agents, this implantable device exhibited enhanced anti-cancer efficacy with lower systemic toxicity against advanced cervical cancer in vivo. This work provides a facile, efficient and safe prospect of using a prodrug micelle and small molecular drug co-loaded electrospun device for localized and advanced cancer therapy.

Up to now, green synthesis of “naked” nanoobjects with clean surfaces is still a great challenge since structure-directing agents such as surfactants are usually used to induce the anisotropic particle growth for interesting nanostructures in solution. Here, a green synthesis approach for preparing “naked” Pt nanoparticles (NPs) in acetic acid solution was reported. Interestingly, Pt NPs with different morphologies (well-defined polyhedrons, irregular polyhedron-constructed chain networks and nanoflower-constructed chain networks) could be successfully synthesized at different concentrations of acetic acid without adding additional structure-directing agents and reducing agents. The acetic acid itself works both as structure-directing agent and reducing agent for the formation of these interesting Pt NPs. Specifically; the synthesized NPs are “naked” with clean surfaces since the acetic acid is a weakly-capping agent which can be easily removed after the washing process. The versatility of this method is further demonstrated by preparation of “naked” PtPd alloy NPs. In particular, the as-prepared “naked” Pt_5.20 and Pt3Pd1_5.20 NPs are demonstrated to be excellent catalysts with much higher electroactivity and better durability than the commercial Pt black catalyst (Hispec™ 1000) for the methanol oxidation reaction. The method reported in this work may pave the way for simple, low-cost, green and eco-friendly synthesis of “naked” metal catalysts for advanced electrocatalytic applications.
