Optical and Photoluminescence Properties of the MgAl2O4:M (M = Ti, Mn, Co, Ni) Phosphors: Calcination Behavior and Photoluminescence Mechanism

Shifa Wang,Huajing Gao,Hong Yu,Peiying Li,Yanwu Li,Chaoli Chen,Yong Wang,Liang Yang,Zijuan Yin

MgAl2O4:M (M = Ti, Mn, Co, Ni) phosphors were successfully prepared by a modified polyacrylamide gel method. Calcination temperature and metal particle has significant effects on the phase transition, optical and color properties of Mg Al2O4: M phosphors. Ti, M n, Co and Ni metal particles introduced into the MgAl2O4 system can produce a variety of colours from white, grayish black, blue to turquoise blue. Mn, Co and Ni metal particles added into MgAl2O4 system can extend their light absorption to visible light range, while the Ti metal particles clad into the system did not improve significantly. Co metal particles appended into the MgAl2O4 system can cause fluorescence quenching of emission peak at 395 nm and enhancement of emission peak at 405 nm, while the Ti and Mn metal particles infused into the system can bring the enhancement of visible emission peak at 425 nm. The fluorescence quenching of the peak at 395 nm can be ascribed to the wavelength of Co metal particles matching the surface plasmon absorbance band of MgAl2O4:M phosphor. A reduction in emission intensity at 425 nm can be assigned to electron transfer from the conduction band (CB) of MgAl2O4 to the CB of metal particles causing non-radiative decay.

The influences of Cr3C2 addition on the phase formation and mechanical properties of (Zr,Ti,Nb,Ta,Hf)C

Li Xu,Wei Liao,Xiaosong Zhou,Yongqiang Tan

The influences of Cr 3 C 2 addition on phase formation, microstructures and mechanical properties of (Zr,Ti,Nb,Ta,Hf)C prepared from binary carbides mixtures by spark plasma sintering were studied. The introduction of 4/3 mol.% Cr 3 C 2 significantly lowered the minimum temperature for uniform high-entropy phase (Zr,Ti,Nb,Ta,Hf)C from 2200 °C for to 1900 °C. The lower solubility limit of Cr in (Zr,Ti,Nb,Ta,Hf,Cr)C results in excessive Cr 3 C 2 -based carbides, which tends to segregate along grain boundaries at higher sintering temperatures while locate at triple junctions at lower sintering temperatures . High mechanical strength of 599 MPa were obtained when 4/3 mol.% Cr 2 C 3 was added and sintered at 1900 °C. The fine grain size and Cr 3 C 2 -based carbides are responsible for the high mechanical properties. More Cr 2 C 3 addition results in lower mechanical properties due to excessive Cr 3 C 2 -based carbides.

Electrophoretic deposition of novel semi-permeable coatings on 3D-printed Ti-Nb alloy meshes for guided alveolar bone regeneration

Danlei Zhao,Haoran Dong,Yuting Niu,Wenjie Fan,Muqi Jiang,Ke Li,Qingsong Wei,William M. Palin,Zhen Zhang

Objective Guided bone regeneration (GBR) techniques use barrier membranes to augment the alveolar ridge for the site-specific growth of bone defects. However, current approaches using cast metal substructures exhibit poor adaptation to the surgical site and increased risk of infection. This study aimed to fabricate multi-functional coatings with 3D-printed porous titanium-niobium (Ti-Nb) alloy meshes to maintain space, prevent the ingrowth of fibroblasts and inhibit the colonization of bacteria for GBR. Methods Ti-Nb alloy meshes were prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) and used as substrates for novel surface coatings. Porous chitosan (CS)/ gelatin (G)/ doxycycline (Dox) coatings were formed on the meshes using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and freeze-drying. The process of EPD was characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), zeta potential, and particle size analysis. The cytotoxicity of the coatings was evaluated through the culture of osteoblasts and immunostaining. The antibacterial activity of the coatings was tested using inhibition zone tests against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The inhibition of fibroblasts infiltration and nutrients transfer properties were analyzed using immunostaining and permeability tests. Results High yield strength (567.5 ± 3.5 MPa) and low elastic modulus (65.5 ± 0.2 GPa) were achieved in Ti-Nb alloy bulk samples. The data of zeta potential, FT-IR and SEM indicated that porous spongy coatings were chemically bonded following EPD. In vitro analysis of CSGDox1 (containing Dox at 1 mg·mL −1 ) coating revealed its antibacterial effect and biocompatibility. Moreover, the CSGDox1 coating was proved to be effective for preventing the ingrowth of fibroblasts, whilst allowing the infiltration of nutrients. Significance This study verified that the EPD of CSGDox coatings on the 3D-printed Ti-Nb meshes can maintain space, provide antibiotic release whilst maintaining a barrier against soft-tissue growth, which is essential for the success of GBR treatment.

Phosphate-promoted synthesis of TS-1 thin crystals with Ti(OSi)2(OH)4 species for 1-hexene epoxidation

Jiaojiao Yu,Yi Zuo,Gudan Li,Bosong Zhang,Hong Yang,Xinyue Wang,Xinwen Guo

PO 4 3- assists the one-step synthesis of highly active TS-1 containing Ti-VI species. • PO 4 3- induces plate-like TS-1 morphology and creates hierarchical micropores. • Ti-VI is constructed by Ti-O-PO 4 x- intermediate from bonding of Ti-OH with PO 4 3- . • TS-MAP-0.2 doubles the activity for 1-hexene epoxidation than additive-free TS-1. Titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) is an efficient and green oxidation catalyst that has been employed in various industrial processes. In our previous work, a highly active TS-1 catalyst bearing Ti(OSi) 2 (OH) 4 (Ti-VI) was successfully prepared via post-treatment with alkaline solutions. Herein, a novel synthesis strategy is developed using monoammonium phosphate (MAP) as a regulator to fabricate thin TS-1 crystals with Ti-VI species, eliminating the complicated post-treatment operations. The study reveals that although the added phosphate anion (PO 4 3- ) is not incorporated into the MFI framework, it significantly affects the crystallization behavior of TS-1 during the synthesis. Essentially, PO 4 3- exerts two functions. First, it regulates the Ti species in the resulting TS-1 by forming Ti-O-PO 4 x - intermediates which not only promotes the formation of Ti-VI but also the construction of large micropores (0.7−0.8 nm) around Ti atoms in TS-1. Furthermore, PO 4 3- induces the formation of plate-like crystal morphology of TS-1. The obtained TS-1 catalyst exhibits remarkably enhanced catalytic performance in 1-hexene epoxidation, which is ascribed to the concurrent o ptimization of its intrinsic catalytic activity and mass transfer diffusion properties. Efficient One-Pot Synthesis of 1,2-Pentanediol from 1-Pentene over a Zirconium Sulfate-Loaded Ti-MWW Bifunctional Catalyst

Yuhan Qiao,Gang Li,Zhiwen Luo,Mengqi Lin

The one-pot synthesis of 1,2-pentanediol from 1-pentene is a route featuring environmental benignity, cost-effectiveness, and high atom economy. In this study, a bifunctional zirconium sulfate-loaded titanosilicate molecular sieve (ZS/Ti-MWW) catalyst was prepared via the impregnation method and used in the one-pot synthesis of 1,2-pentanediol. The effects of reaction conditions, zirconium sulfate loading, and calcination temperature on the catalytic performance for the oxidative hydration of 1-pentene were systematically investigated. On the basis of the NH3-TPD characterization results, the acid amounts of different catalysts were quantitatively analyzed. The results confirmed that zirconium sulfate could introduce abundant acidic sites into the catalyst, and the acid amount varied with the loading amount of zirconium sulfate and the calcination temperature. With the increase in acid sites in the ZS/Ti-MWW catalyst, its catalytic activity in epoxide hydration was markedly improved. Thus, the 1-pentene epoxidation and epoxide hydration were efficiently carried out in one system without additional separation. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the conversion rate of 1-pentene, the selectivity, and the yield of 1,2-pentanediol reached 95.65%, 80.72%, and 77.21%, respectively. This work offers new insights into the design and preparation of bifunctional titanosilicate molecular sieve catalysts as well as the efficient and green synthesis of 1,2-diols from olefins.

Synergistic Catalysis for Dual Enhancement of Synthesis and Hydrogen Storage in NaAlH4 Using a Metallic Al-Ti-Ce Precursor

Yingjue Chen,Yan Chu,Shiwei Fang,Xiaoqi Zhang,Jie Zheng,Wubin Du,Wengang Cui,Lingchao Zhang,Xin Zhang,Yaxiong Yang,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan

NaAlH4 suffers from high kinetic barriers, causing high dehydrogenation temperatures, sluggish kinetics, poor reversibility, and low direct synthesis efficiency. Herein, a metallic Al−Ti−Ce alloy ribbon (Ti:Ce = 1:1, total 6 wt %) with a refined Al matrix (∼405 nm) and uniformly dispersed nanoscale Ti2Al20Ce and Al3Ti phases (200−360 nm) was fabricated by arc melting and melt-spinning. Used directly as the Al source, this ribbon enabled successful synthesis of NaAlH4 by ball-milling with NaH under 50 bar H2 for 36 h. The resulting composite delivered a dehydrogenation capacity of 4.73 wt % from 107.4 to 182.1 °C and a capacity retention of 91.98% over 15 cycles. The Ti−Ce synergy refines Al grains and disperses catalytic phases while also improving the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics of NaAlH4 and suppressing Al agglomeration, collectively ensuring high reactivity and sustained reversibility of the system. This work presents an effective design strategy for an integrated precursor that combines a bimetallic catalyst and an Al source, offering an alternative approach for optimizing the synthesis and hydrogen storage performance of the NaAlH4 system.

Fe/Ti Co-doping suppresses P2-O2 phase transition for stabilized Na2/3 Ni1/3 Mn2/3 O2 cathode

Qiwei Zhong,Yueyang Liu,Jiayu Song,Yuchao Cui,Haozhe Li,Li Zhao

Fe/Ti co-doping converts the P2 phase to the OP4 phase and suppresses the undesirable P2-O2 phase transition. • Fe/Ti co-doping breaks the Na + /vacancy ordering and improves sodium ion transport capability. • Ti doping can shorten the TM-O bonds and lengthen the Na-O bonds. P2-type Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 is regarded as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries owing to its high specific capacity and low cost. Nevertheless, its practical application is hindered by irreversible structural degradation and rapid capacity decay associated with the detrimental P2–O2 phase transition during deep Na + extraction. In this work, Fe and Ti are co-incorporated into Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 via a sol-gel method to enhance structural stability. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicates that Ti doping shortens TM–O bonds and enlarges Na + diffusion channels by increasing Na-O distances, thereby enhancing structural stability and Na + transport kinetics. In situ XRD analyses reveal that Fe/Ti co-doping regulates the phase transition pathway from the irreversible P2–O2 phase transition to a reversible P2–OP4 phase transition, effectively mitigating structural degradation during cycling. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that optimized Fe/Ti co-doping enhances the overall electrochemical performance. The optimized composition, Na 2/3 Ni 1/4 Fe 1/12 Mn 7/12 Ti 1/12 O 2 , exhibits excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 82.33% after 50 cycles at 0.2 C, and delivers a specific capacity of 61.43 mA h g −1 at a high rate of 5 C. This study demonstrates that the combination of sol-gel synthesis and co-doping engineering provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Synergistically Enhancing Tribological Properties, Oxidation Resistance and Anti-Corrosion of Ti-MAO Coatings via h-BN/SiC Co-doping

Jia Wang,Lin Gao,Chuanyao Dong,Kan Zhang

To enhance the service performance of titanium alloys for demanding high-end equipment applications, an h-BN/SiC-Ti-MAO composite coating was fabricated on Ti6Al4V via one-step micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Optimizing the SiC additive concentration offers an effective way to improve the overall performance of the composite coating in mechanical, tribological, oxidation resistance and anti-corrosion properties. The research results show that the coating prepared with 4 g/L SiC yielded superior multifunctional properties. It possessed a dense microstructure with the lowest porosity (6.45%), high hardness (712 HV) and excellent adhesion. This coating maintained a low friction coefficient of approximately 0.20 from RT to 5 0 0 ∘ C and exhibited the best oxidation resistance at 6 0 0 ∘ C, with a parabolic rate constant ( K P ) of 3 . 3 3 × 1 0 − 4 . Electrochemical tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution further confirmed its optimal anti-corrosion, showing the lowest corrosion current density ( 3 . 3 2 5 × 1 0 − 9 A/cm 2 ) . In contrast, insufficient SiC concentration results in limited performance improvement of the composite coating, whereas excessive concentration introduces microstructural defects, ultimately degrading the overall performance. This study demonstrates that optimized h-BN/SiC co-doping represents an effective strategy for developing high-performance MAO protective coatings on titanium alloys.

A Tailored Ti-Based Rutile-Type High-Entropy Oxide: Unlocking Ultrafast De/Hydrogenation Kinetics of MgH2 via Multimetallic Synergism

Xue Ke,Yuanyuan Zhang,Fulai Qi,Qian Zhang,Xinqiang Wang,Yanxia Liu,Ke Wang,Jindou Shi,Zichao Shen,Mingchang Zhang,Yuanchao Yang,Fan Gao,Wengang Cui,Zhenglong Li,Yaxiong Yang,Lixian Sun,Jian Chen,Hongge Pan

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is widely regarded as a highly promising solid-state hydrogen storage material. However, its practical application is severely constrained by high operating temperatures and sluggish hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics arising from multistep reaction energy barriers. Here, we rationally tailor a quinary Ti-based rutile-type high-entropy oxide to overcome these intrinsic limitations for the first time. The onset dehydrogenation temperature of the hybrid reduces to 195°C, which is 163°C lower than that of pristine MgH 2 . The composite releases 5.88 wt.% H 2 within 10 min at 250°C, accompanied by a 58% reduction in the apparent dehydrogenation activation energy. Moreover, a 1.84 wt.% H 2 uptake can be achieved within only 20 s at room temperature. The coexistence of various multivalent metal cations, lattice distortions, abundant defects, and oxygen vacancies in (TiNbCrTaFe)O 2 substantially reduces the multi-step reaction energy barriers during MgH 2 de/hydrogenation, enabling the overall kinetics to surpass those of all previously reported high-entropy catalyst-modified MgH 2 systems. This work expands the compositional design space and application scope of high-entropy oxides and provides a viable strategy for advanced hydrogen storage and catalytic systems.

Cost-Efficient Ti-V-Sn-Sb Chlorine-Evolving Electrodes Deposited by Liquid Plasma Spraying for Antibacterial and Wastewater Treatment

Zhang Yu,Zhou Ping,Liu Xiaomei,Liu Yi,Huang Jing,Wu Shuangjie,Saitoh Hidetoshi,Zhang Botao,Li Hua

Electrochemical chlorine evolution is a promising approach for antimicrobial and wastewater treatment. However, the large-scale applications of conventional electrodes are hindered by the high cost of precious metals and tedious thermal decomposition method. In this study, precious metal-free electrodes for chlorine evolution were fabricated via liquid plasma spraying technique using a Ti 0.35 V 0.35 Sn 0.25 Sb 0.05 feedstock solution with varying total metal concentration. Scanning electron microscopy combined with EDS elemental analysis showed that the coatings exhibited a loose and porous morphology, with Ti, V, Sn and Sb elements uniformly distributed throughout. X-ray diffraction analysis identified characteristic diffraction peaks corresponding to VO 2 , SnO 2 , Sb 2 O 5 and TiO 2 in the coatings. The electrocatalytic properties of the coatings were evaluated using multiple electrochemical techniques, and the electrode prepared using the 1.0 M feedstock solution demonstrated the best performance. Antimicrobial test showed that after 30-s electrolysis, the disinfection rates of simulated tap water against E. coli and S. aureus exceeded 88.1% and 96.8%, respectively, whereas for the 0.06 M NaCl solution, both pathogens were inactivated by over 99.9% within 15 s. Additionally, methylene blue degradation reached 98.4% after 45 min of electrolysis. This study provides a new strategy for producing low-cost chlorine-evolving electrodes with potential application in antibacterial and wastewater treatment.

Two-step carbothermal reduction-carburization synthesis of high-quality (Ti, W)C solid solution powders for high-performance cermets

Xiao-Dong Kang,Zhi-Gang Zhu,Guo-Hua Zhang

This study proposed a two-step carbothermal reduction-carburization method for preparing high-quality (Ti, W)C solid solution powders. Through separating the carbothermal reduction deoxygenation from the carburization and solid solution process, stepwise precise control was achieved. Using TiO 2 , WO 3 , and carbon black as raw materials, deoxygenation and most of the solid solution reactions were first completed at 1500 °C under a carbon-deficient condition. Subsequently, precise carbon supplementation was conducted, followed by final carburization and solid solution at 1550 °C. The resulting powders possessed excellent characteristics including elevated purity, fine grain size, homogeneous morphology, and optimal dispersibility. High-frequency spark plasma sintering (HF-SPS) was employed subsequently to fabricate (Ti, W)C-based cermets. A systematic elucidation of the reaction mechanisms in the two-step method was conducted, and the effects of W content on the powder characteristics as well as the microstructure and properties of cermets were explored. Results demonstrated that the grain size of the synthesized powders gradually decreased as W content increased, and (Ti 0.69 , W 0.31 )C showed the finest average grain size (0.38 ± 0.12 μm). Increasing W led to a decline in both hardness and fracture toughness ( K IC ) of cermets. Cermet sintered from (Ti 0.88 , W 0.12 )C powder demonstrated optimal mechanical properties, and possessed a hardness of 2030 ± 21 HV 30 and a K IC of 10.35 ± 0.31 MPa m 1/2 , achieving an excellent combination of hardness and toughness.
