Z-scheme heterojunction with spatially separated dual redox-active sites for coupled carbon dioxide photoreduction and tetracycline photooxidation

Shuang Li,Haili Lin,Xuemei Jia,Qianlong Wang,Haoyu Zhang,Yujie Zhang,Xiaoxin Feng,Shifu Chen,Jing Cao

Coupling solar-powered CO 2 conversion with pollutant removal via Z -scheme heterojunctions offers a promising strategy to simultaneously address energy and environmental challenges. However, achieving efficient charge separation and optimizing active sites for both reduction and oxidation reactions are still significant challenges. Herein, a Z -scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with spatially separated dual active sites (hydroxyl-functionalized red phosphorus (HRP) and amino-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride (ACN)) was developed to enable the concurrent photoreduction of CO 2 and photooxidation of tetracycline (TC). The optimized heterojunction, incorporating 1.25 wt% HRP, achieved a 4.96-fold increase in CO yield and 1.09-fold improvement in TC degradation compared with a red phosphorus/graphitic carbon nitride (RP/CN) system without surface functionalization. Density functional theory calculations and experimental analyses confirmed a Z -scheme charge transfer mechanism wherein hydroxyl groups facilitated hole-mediated TC oxidation and amino groups promoted electron-driven CO 2 reduction. The 1.25HRP/ACN photocatalyst demonstrated an electron transfer efficiency of 87.8 %, significantly surpassing the 64.9 % observed for 1.25RP/CN, highlighting the synergistic benefits of dual-site engineering. This study provides detailed insights into dual-functionalized Z -scheme heterojunctions with spatially separated redox-active sites, advancing the design of integrated systems for solar fuel generation and environmental remediation.

Fabrication of NiB/ZnIn2S4 Z-Scheme Heterojunction: Simultaneously Boosts Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

Shengqi Lin,Hailong Huang,Jieyi Fan,Chunhe Li,Kuankuan Ren,Weidong Dou

Photocatalytic conversion of biomass-derived compounds into value-added chemicals coupled with hydrogen production presents a promising strategy to address energy and environmental challenges. In this study, a series of NiB/ZnIn2S4 nanocomposites were synthesized via a facile two-step hydrothermal approach. The designed system enables the simultaneous utilization of photoexcited electrons and holes in redox reactions, achieving efficient benzyl alcohol oxidation and hydrogen evolution. The optimized 3%-NiB/ZnIn2S4 nanocomposite demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic performance, exhibiting a hydrogen evolution rate of 7223.2 μmol g–1 h–1 in 1.50 vol % benzyl alcohol solution, representing 2889.3-fold and 4.8-fold enhancements over pristine NiB and ZnIn2S4, respectively. Furthermore, the system maintains robust stability over 14 photocatalytic cycles, achieving 71.7% conversion efficiency and 86.8% selectivity toward benzaldehyde production. The enhanced performance originates from the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions between NiB and ZnIn2S4, which facilitates efficient charge carrier separation and transport, as evidenced by improved photocurrent response and reduced electrochemical impedance. This work provides valuable insights into the photocatalytic valorization of biomass-derived platform chemicals under visible light irradiation.

Engineering Z-Scheme Bi2S3/CeO2/Ni(OH)2 Heterojunctions for Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

Hu Xinyin,Xiao Guoqing,Chen Chunlin,Chen Chunyan,Zeng Xiang,Li Ruili,Yang Zhengwei

Recently, several emerging pollutants have caused increasing damage to aquatic ecosystems. Reducing antibiotic concentrations in water by visible light is one of the most promising strategies for sustainable development. Here, a Bi 2 S 3 /CeO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared by the hydrothermal method, which could effectively utilize free radicals to degrade tetracycline. Ni(OH) 2 was used for co-catalysing in photodegradation experiments to improve electron transfer and enhance photocatalytic performance. The degradation rate of the Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for 20 mg/L TC was 91.35% after reacting 60 min under visible light irradiation. Besides, it also investigated such operational parameters influencing the photocatalytic reaction as catalyst dosage, initial concentration of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), and solution pH. Studies using free radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) both contributed to the photodegradation of TC. Finally, with high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), potential degradation pathways of the intermediate products were logically inferred as well as the photocatalytic mechanism. The experimental results surface that the prepared Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst Bi 2 S 3 /CeO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 exhibits superior photocatalytic performance, offering a novel approach to addressing TC contamination in environmental settings. Constructing Direct Z-Scheme Y2TmSbO7/GdYBiNbO7 Heterojunction Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Acetochlor under Visible Light Irradiation

Liang Hao,Jingfei Luan

This study presents a pioneering synthesis of a direct Z-scheme Y2TmSbO7/GdYBiNbO7heterojunction photocatalyst (YGHP) using an ultrasound-assisted hydrothermal synthesis technique. Additionally, novel photocatalytic nanomaterials, namely Y2TmSbO7and GdYBiNbO7, were fabricated via the hydrothermal fabrication technique. A comprehensive range of characterization techniques, including X-ray diffractometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrophotometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, photocurrent testing, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance, was employed to thoroughly investigate the morphological features, composition, chemical, optical, and photoelectric properties of the fabricated samples. The photocatalytic performance of YGHP was assessed in the degradation of the pesticide acetochlor (AC) and the mineralization of total organic carbon (TOC) under visible light exposure, demonstrating eximious removal efficiencies. Specifically, AC and TOC exhibited removal rates of 99.75% and 97.90%, respectively. Comparative analysis revealed that YGHP showcased significantly higher removal efficiencies for AC compared to the Y2TmSbO7, GdYBiNbO7, or N-doped TiO2photocatalyst, with removal rates being 1.12 times, 1.21 times, or 3.07 times higher, respectively. Similarly, YGHP demonstrated substantially higher removal efficiencies for TOC than the aforementioned photocatalysts, with removal rates 1.15 times, 1.28 times, or 3.51 times higher, respectively. These improvements could be attributed to the Z-scheme charge transfer configuration, which preserved the preferable redox capacities of Y2TmSbO7and GdYBiNbO7. Furthermore, the stability and durability of YGHP were confirmed, affirming its potential for practical applications. Trapping experiments and electron spin resonance analyses identified active species generated by YGHP, namely •OH, •O2−, and h+, allowing for comprehensive analysis of the degradation mechanisms and pathways of AC. Overall, this investigation advances the development of efficient Z-scheme heterostructural materials and provides valuable insights into formulating sustainable remediation strategies for combatting AC contamination.

In-situ construction of dual Z-scheme TiO2/CuBi2O4/Bi2O2CO3 heterojunction for exceptional visible-light photocatalytic tetracycline removal

Li Jia,Shi Quanquan,Ha Lin,Sun Yanxin,Shi Huiming

Rational development of innovative photocatalysts with efficient interfacial separation and stronger oxidation–reduction ability of photo-generated carrier is critical for environmental antibiotic purification. In this work, a novel dual Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposites were fabricated based on the in-situ growth of CuBi 2 O 4 nanoparticles onto the surface of TiO 2 nanorods and Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 nanosheets via a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Ternary TiO 2 /CuBi 2 O 4 /Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (TCB) composites showed enhanced photocatalytic removal of tetracycline (TC), which is greater than pure Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 , CuBi 2 O 4 , TiO 2 and binary composites. The TCB-20 composite exhibited the best photo-degradation efficiency of TC (82% at 60 min) and maintained a higher stability after four consecutive cycles. Additionally, a dual Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism with highly efficient and fast electron transfer was proposed, which prominently improves the photocatalytic performance. This work reports an integrated structure of a dual Z-scheme heterojunction that plays an important role in the degradation of tetracycline. Graphical abstract

Performance evaluation of R1336mzz(Z)/TEGDME absorption chiller coupled with low temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell system

Yufan Yang,Chunhuan Luo,Chunting Zhou,Muran He,Lin Lang,Xi Yu,Changchang Yang,Yufan Chen

The typical operating temperature of a low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (LT-PEMFC) is approximately 80°C, with a thermoelectric ratio of approximately 1. To utilize the waste heat of LT-PEMFCs, an absorption chiller (AC) using R1336mzz(Z)/TEGDME as the working pair coupled with LT-PEMFCs vehicles was proposed in this work. The saturated vapor pressure and viscosity of this novel working pair were measured and regressed. The excess enthalpy and specific enthalpy were determined by NRTL model. Based on the thermophysical properties, the performance of the coupled system was investigated under various operating conditions. Results showed that this AC system was able to utilize the waste heat generated by LT-PEMFCs for cooling in the range of 269.1 K to 293.2 K, which can meet the cooling demands of most commercial vehicles. The efficiency of the coupled system was approximately 0.67, which represents a 55.8% improvement over the standalone LT-PEMFCs system. In typical summer conditions, the coupled system extended the endurance mileage of LT-PEMFCs vehicles by 14% and saved 12% of hydrogen in a daily route. Thus, the AC using R1336mzz(Z)/TEGDME coupled LT-PEMFCs vehicles has a great significance for enhancing the performance and enlarging the mileage.

Visible Light-Driven Z-Scheme CNQDs/Ag3PO4 Octopod-Shaped Nanostructures with Exposed {110} Facets for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation

Xiaoze Yin,Yuxin Xiao,Chaoyue Wu,Jinnan Wang

Although Ag3PO4possessed high quantum yield (approximately 90%) and strong oxidation potential, its practical application was limited due to serious photocorrosion and inadequate stability. To improve the anti-photocorrsion ability, carbon nitride quantum dots (CNQDs) were loaded on octopod-like Ag3PO4with {110}-faceted rhombic dodecahedrons. The CNQDs stabilized the high-energy {110} facets via carboxylate-mediated interactions, facilitating oriented assembly into 3D octopod configurations. More importantly, a Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed between CNQDs and Ag3PO4for electrons transfer from Ag3PO4to CNQDs, which could not only maintain strong redox potentials but also suppress carrier recombination. The 12.5%CNQDs/Ag3PO4composite achieved a more than 90% removal of methyl orange within 13 min. Radical trapping and EPR analyses indicated that holes of Ag3PO4played a dominant role in organics degradation. In addition, •O2−, which was generated from the O2reduction by photogenerated electrons of CNQDs, also participated in the degradation of organics. This work provides a facet-controlled heterojunction design strategy, leveraging quantum-confined CNQDs to enhance charge kinetics and molecular oxygen activation.

A CQD/CdS/g-C3N4 photocatalyst for dye and antibiotic degradation: Dual carrier driving force and tunable electron transfer pathway

Jianfei Li,Bin Zhang,Junyan Lu,Zihao Guo,Mingxia Zhang,Degang Li,Zengdian Zhao,Shasha Song,Yan Liu,Luchang Qin

The path and mechanism of charge transfers in composite catalyst are important for degrading organic pollutants effectively. A quasi-ternary Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with carbon quantum dots (CQD), CdS, and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) (CQD/CdS/g-C 3 N 4 ) has been successfully constructed in this work, and its electron transfer path is elucidated by contrast CdS/CQD/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst. The built-in electric field at the interface between CdS and g-C 3 N 4 induces exciton separations. The energy barrier between CQD and CdS accelerated charge transfers and further prevents exciton annihilation. As a result, CQD/CdS/g-C 3 N 4 exhibits the greatest photocatalytic degradation, and the removal rates of Rhodamine B and sulfadiazine are 94.7 % and 76.0 %, which are 2.46 times and 1.47 times of CdS/CQD/g-C 3 N 4 , 7.02 times and 7.92 times of g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. It is further proved that CQD as the active site can promote the generation of H 2 O 2 and effectively inhibit the formation of •O 2 – in the photocatalytic reaction. In addition, the degradation pathway and products of sulfadiazine are explored by means of HPLC-MS and calculation of Gaussian software. This work demonstrates the relationship between photocatalytic activity and electron transfer path, meanwhile, provides a reference for the design of efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

A novel Fe-free photo-electro-Fenton-like system for enhanced ciprofloxacin degradation: bifunctional Z-scheme WO3/g-C3N4

Xiaoyu Bai,Yi Li,Liangbo Xie,Xiaohui Liu,Sihui Zhan,Wenping Hu

Antibiotics accumulate because of their extensive use and difficult degradation, which can lead to the formation of novel antibiotic resistant genes and bacteria, which can cause damage to human health and the ecological environment. Here, we designed a novel photo-electro-Fenton-like (PEF-like) system with bifunctional Z-scheme WO3/g-C3N4 for accelerated decomposition and enhanced mineralization of stubborn ciprofloxacin (CIP). This PEF-like system, accompanied by visible light activation, with the optimal WO3/g-C3N4 (1 : 6) composite exhibited outstanding removal efficiency of CIP compared with a single photocatalysis system and electro-Fenton-like (EF-like) system, and the elimination rate reached 100% within 2 h under visible light irradiation. The WO3/g-C3N4 (1 : 6) composite displayed the strongest visible light absorption, the weakest recombination of electron–hole pairs, the highest photocurrent response and the lowest electrochemical impedance compared with pristine WO3 and g-C3N4. Significantly, WO3/g-C3N4 (1 : 6) played a dual role in the PEF-like system which could not only produce ˙OH, ˙O2− and h+ during photocatalysis, but could also generate ˙OH through the reactions of W5+ and photoexcited electrons of g-C3N4 for the decomposition of H2O2. It was worth noting that this bifunctional PEF-like catalyst with photoelectric synergy could replace Fe2+ in a conventional electro-Fenton reaction and the pH range was broadened while still maintaining efficient degradation efficiency in the range of 2–9. The PEF-like system maintained a high elimination rate of CIP after five consecutive runs which revealed that it possessed prominent stability and feasibility.

Development of a hypoxic nanocomposite containing high-Z element as 5-fluorouracil carrier activated self-amplified chemoradiotherapy co-enhancement

Cui Yang,Shan Peng,Yingming Sun,Hongtao Miao,Meng Lyu,Shijing Ma,Yuan Luo,Rui Xiong,Conghua Xie,Hong Quan

The synergetic effect of chemoradiotherapy achievement is encouraging but significantly hampered by the prevalence of hypoxia, leading to drug/radiation resistance in solid tumours. To address the problem and improve the efficiency of cancer therapy, a lamellar-structure multifunctional graphene oxide (GO) drug-delivery system with an average size of 243 nm, co-delivering of metronidazole (MI), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and FePt magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), was successfully designed and synthesized in the study. The integration of hypoxic drug carrier loading radiosensitizers and chemotherapeutic drugs simultaneously, combines the properties of hypoxia-sensitivity and chemoradiotherapy co-enhancement within a single nanoplatform, which is expected to provide new ideas for cancer treatment. Through in vitro tests, the hypoxia-sensitivity and cytotoxicity of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) of the nanocomposites (NCs) were proved. Moreover, the additive effect between MI, 5-FU and FePt MNPs in cytotoxicity and radiation sensitization aspects is disclosed. It performs an enhanced cell proliferation inhibition and makes up a self-amplified radiotherapy enhancement system that improves radiation efficiency and cell radiosensitivity simultaneously. In conclusion, the study recommended a novel and promising multifunctional nanoplatform which performed a self-amplified effect that activated chemoradiotherapy co-enhancement.

Room-Temperature Construction of Z-Scheme Bi4O5I2/BiOBr Heterojunction for Highly Efficient Visible-Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

Chunyang Han,Yao Liu,Dong Zhao,Zhao Li,Qian Zhang,Huiqiang Liu,Yue Zhao,Yunyan Liu

A novel Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /BiOBr Z-scheme heterojunction is fabricated via a room-temperature co-precipitation method. • The Z-scheme mechanism preserves strong redox potentials, generating abundant ·OH, ·O 2 - , and h + . • Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /BiOBr achieves 85.8% MB degradation in 150 min, with a rate constant 16.06 times that of BiOBr. • The composite exhibits excellent stability and reusability over four consecutive degradation cycles. • This work provides a green, scalable strategy for designing high-performance bismuth-based photocatalysts : Bismuth and bismuth-rich oxyiodides, such as BiOX and Bi 4 O 5 I 2 , are promising visible-light photocatalysts but suffer from rapid photogenerated carrier recombination. Here, we construct a novel Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /BiOBr heterojunction via a facile room-temperature co-precipitation method that creates a tight heterointerface between two layered bismuth-based semiconductors. This yields intimate contact confirmed by HRTEM and XPS. The composite also shows enhanced visible light absorption (UV–Vis DRS) and markedly suppressed photoluminescence, indicating efficient charge separation, further supported by higher photocurrent and smaller EIS arc radius. More importantly, the work proposes a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism rather than a conventional type-II junction. Based on band-edge calculations (Mott–Schottky) and radical trapping experiments, the composite preserves the strong reduction ability of electrons in Bi 4 O 5 I 2 and the strong oxidation ability of holes in BiOBr, while the less energetic charge carriers recombine. This mechanism is a key conceptual advance because it overcomes the redox-capacity loss typical of type-II systems and generates highly reactive species (h + , ·OH, and ·O 2 - ), as verified by scavenger tests. The k value of Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /BiOBr-3 (0.01333 min -1 ) is 7.98 and 16.06 times higher than those of Bi 4 O 5 I 2 (0.00167 min -1 ) and BiOBr (0.00083 min -1 ), respectively. The composite also demonstrates excellent stability over four consecutive cycles. This work offers a simple, energy-efficient strategy for constructing high-performance bismuth-based Z-scheme heterojunctions, providing a viable route for wastewater remediation and advancing the rational design of photocatalysts with synergistic redox capability.
