As one of the few carotenoid-producing microorganisms,Rhodotorula mucilaginosaremains underexplored for its antioxidant activity. This study investigated the effects ofR. mucilaginosaJAASSRY on D-galactose-induced aging mice. The high-dose JAASSRY (HR) significantly increased body weight by 9.89% compared to the model group (AM), while reducing organ indices of the spleen, liver, kidneys, and brain (p< 0.01). Compared with the AM group, the HR group exhibited increased serum activities of SOD (20.26%), GSH-Px (9.03%), and CAT (133.01%), with a 24.87% decrease in MDA level. In brain tissue, SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT activities increased by 79.49%, 8.45%, and 60.23%, respectively, while MDA decreased by 8.29%.R. mucilaginosaJAASSRY also dose-dependently alleviated structural damage in the hippocampus and spleen and improved motor strength and learning-memory capacity. Furthermore,R. mucilaginosaJAASSRY increased the abundance ofLactobacillusand reducedProteobacteria,Helicobacter, andOscillospira, while enhancing antioxidant capacity by modulating nucleotide, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism.LactobacillusandPediococcuswere positively correlated with memory latency and CAT/SOD activities (p< 0.05), whereasActinormycesandDehalobacteriumshowed negative correlations. Notably, HR performed comparably or superiorly to β-carotene in improving cerebral oxidative stress and beneficial microbiota, suggesting its potential in neuroprotection and gut–brain axis regulation. In conclusion,R. mucilaginosaJAASSRY mitigates aging-related oxidative damage and behavioral deficits by modulating gut microbiota structure and function, demonstrating its promise as a β-carotene alternative in animal husbandry and functional foods.

Despite the ubiquitous use of monosodium glutamate (MSG) as a food additive, its specific effects on intestinal health and disease remain largely unclear. Here we found mucosal application of MSG induced an upward intestinal short-circuit current ( I sc ) in the murine ileum, which was significantly reduced by extracellular Cl − , Na + , and Ca 2+ removal. Mechanistically, MSG-induced I sc was significantly attenuated by pharmacological inhibition of key transporters (NCX, SGLT1, NKA) and secretory channels (CaCC, CFTR, IK Ca ). Furthermore, disrupting intracellular Ca 2+ homeostasis via endoplasmic reticulum (ER) chelation or blockade of IP 3 R, RyR, SOCE/CRAC, and VGCC significantly suppressed both the ileal I sc and MSG-stimulated Ca 2+ signaling in IECs. Importantly, MSG triggered a simultaneous elevation in intracellular Ca 2+ and a reduction in Na + , which were abolished by the blockers of NCX and SGLT1. In vivo, MSG-induced Ca 2+ -dependent ion transports were significantly reduced in irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) mice. Our findings indicate that MSG drives Ca 2+ -dependent intestinal ion transports through a complex network orchestrated by SGLT1 and NCX under healthy state, which is markedly attenuated in IBS-D. This study provides novel insights into the gastrointestinal impact of dietary MSG in both health and bowel disease.

Designed ordered Pt 1 Co 1 nanocrystals anchored on N-doped carbon with optimized Pt/Co ratio for bifunctional ORR and MOR. • Achieved superior ORR performance: mass activity of 0.734 mA/μg Pt and specific activity of 1.725 mA/cm 2 , outperforming Pt/C by 4.2 and 6.2 times, respectively. • Revealed the synergy of ordered structure and metal-support interaction (SMSI) for electronic modulation (downshifted Pt d-band) and geometric stabilization. • Provided a universal design principle for high-performance Pt-based bifunctional electrocatalysts via structural ordering and support engineering. The practical deployment of fuel cells (FCs) faces significant obstacles stemming from the surface poisoning of electrocatalysts by carbonaceous intermediates (primarily CO) and the intrinsically sluggish reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. Herein, we report the synthesis of ordered PtCo nanocrystals anchored on a nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) support with precisely controlled atomic ratios. The incorporation of Co atoms into the Pt lattice induces a downshift of the Pt d -band center, substantially weakening the adsorption strength of CO and other oxygen intermediates on the catalyst surface. In the CO stripping experiment, the CO oxidation peak potential of Pt 1 Co 1 NCs was observed at 0.587 V, which is 137 mV lower than that of 20% commercial Pt/C (0.724 V). This significant negative shift directly confirms the enhanced CO tolerance of the Pt₁Co₁ NCs catalyst. Furthermore, the Pt 1 Co 1 NCs catalyst demonstrated significantly enhanced bifunctional activity. Specifically, it delivered mass activities (MA) of 0.734 mA/μg Pt for the ORR and 0.932 mA/μg Pt for the MOR, outperforming commercial Pt/C by factors of 4.2 and 3.7, respectively. 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is an extensively applied organic compound, primarily for agricultural weed control and plant growth agents. Although 2,4-D usually exists in the environment in low volumes, the detection of 2,4-D is critical for human health and environmental safety. In this work, a biophotonic biosensor was fabricated by coating the surface of a tapered optical fiber with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to excite the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and functionalizing the fiber with molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (MoS2-NSs)/zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO-NWs) to extend the effective sensing area. Due to the inhibitory effect of 2,4-D on the hydrolytic activity of ALP, the refractive index (RI) around the sensor surface changes, leading to a shift in the LSPR peak wavelength. According to this sensing technique, the sensor can detect concentrations in the range of 1–10 mg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.29 mg/L. The stability, repeatability and selectivity tests show that the sensor has good stability and selectivity. In the actual sample detection experiment, the recovery rates of apples and Chinese cabbage were 96.2–100.4% and 83.8–108.8%, respectively, which indicated that the detection method had good accuracy for the detection of target substances in actual samples. Thus, the proposed sensor has an important application in the detection of 2,4-D herbicides.

Coupling glycerol oxidation with hydrogen production offers a promising approach to reducing the energy consumption of hydrogen production and upgrading biomass. However, the catalytic performance is often limited by insufficient interfacial charge transfer and poorly defined active sites. Herein, we report a sulfur-modulated NiFe layered double hydroxide catalyst integrated with a Metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-derived Cu framework on nickel foam, in which well-defined heterogeneous interfaces are deliberately constructed to regulate the local electronic structure and catalytic microenvironment. Sulfur incorporation reconstructs the metal coordination environment and induces electron redistribution. As a result, the catalyst exhibits outstanding glycerol oxidation performance toward formate with high selectivity over a broad potential window, along with remarkable durability at high current densities. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy identifies the key intermediates involved in glycerol oxidation, while density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that sulfur-induced electronic coupling lowers the reaction energy barrier and facilitates charge transfer.

The practical application of sulfur-based batteries is significantly limited by sluggish reaction kinetics and structural collapse. Herein, a copper-modified sulfurized polyaniline (CuSPANI) cathode with distinctive d-p-π multi-orbital coupling is constructed through Cu heteroatom introduction. This coupling, arising from hybridization between Cu d orbitals and sulfurized polyaniline (SPANI) p/π orbitals, enables triple electronic modulation: reducing energy barriers to enhance kinetics, expanding electron delocalization to improve conductivity, and activating horizontal Cu d orbitals to strengthen structural stability. Consequently, the aqueous CuSPANI battery delivers a high reversible capacity of 834.75 mAh g s −1 at 3 C and exceptional cycling stability (61.2% capacity retention after 60,000 cycles at 15 C). Moreover, the designed flexible quasi-solid-state pouch cell achieves a 1.25 V output and maintains stable power under deformation, highlighting its potential for wearable energy storage. This work provides new insight into designing high-performance sulfurized polymers via orbital hybridization.

NiFe alloy is regarded as a promising electrocatalyst for water splitting owing to its superior conductivity, tunable electronic structure, and abundant active sites. Nevertheless, its practical application is hindered by slow water dissociation kinetics and unfavorable adsorption of hydrogen intermediates. Herein, we develop a composite catalyst, denoted as Co/Ni 3 Fe@NC-3 through a coordination-pyrolysis route, where ZIF-67-derived Co nanoparticles are anchored on Ni 3 Fe@NC porous nanosheets. In 1 M KOH, the catalyst exhibits remarkable bifunctional activity, requiring overpotentials of 67 mV for HER and 240 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 . Notably, a symmetric electrolyzer based on this catalyst (Co/Ni 3 Fe@NC-3) (+||−) achieves overall water splitting at a low voltage of 1.499 V (10 mA cm −2 ), superior to the commercial Pt/C||RuO 2 benchmark (1.592 V), and sustains stable operation for 100 h at 100 mA cm −2 . In-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicates that Co incorporation optimizes the interfacial electronic structure, leading to faster charge transfer and reduced impedance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results further demonstrate that Co-induced interfacial electron redistribution upshifts the d-band centers ( E d ) of Ni/Fe sites, strengthens the adsorption of H* and H 2 O, and thus synergistically enhances both HER and OER performance. This study highlights the effectiveness of interface engineering and electronic structure modulation, providing a viable strategy for designing advanced NiFe-based water-splitting catalysts.

The influence of soil water content and contaminant injection pressure on the migration behaviour of p-Xylene (one of the organic pollutants in Benzene Toluene Ethylbenzene & Xylene) is investigated in the unsaturated zone using the controlled laboratory sandbox experiments. The results show that, at equivalent migration distances, higher soil water content leads to longer migration durations and reduces transport velocities, whereas greater injection pressure promotes faster contaminant movement. These findings highlight the governing role of water saturation in the water–oil–gas three-phase system, in which increased water content decreases the relative permeability of the oil phase and retards capillary-driven BTEX transport. Unlike many previous studies in which contaminants commonly migrate downward toward the groundwater table, the BTEX in this study did not reach the water table and exhibited partial upward migration. Overall, the results provide experimental-scale insight into key mechanisms governing BTEX transport in unsaturated sandy media and serve as a reference for improving predictions of contaminant fate and migration pathways in field settings.

Electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol toward high-value
C3 products
on Pd-based catalysts presents a promising strategy for upgrading
and converting glycerol. However, C3 intermediates often adsorb too
tightly on Pd-based catalyst surfaces during glycerol oxidation, leading
to C–C bond cleavage. Herein, cubic-shaped PdBi nanoparticles
with tunable Ni doping levels are successfully synthesized through
a one-step solvothermal method. Owing to the downshift of d-band center
originating from the introduction of Bi and Ni as well as the cubic
shape, the PdBiNi ternary nanocubes (NCs) exhibit excellent electrocatalytic
performance for the glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR). Specifically,
Pd 83 Bi 12 Ni 5 NCs with the lowest d-band
center exhibit a specific activity of 61.12 mA cm geo –2 and a mass activity of 5.34 A mg Pd –1 . Notably, the Faradaic efficiency (FE) toward C3
products exceeds 97%. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
and density functional theory calculations show that key C3 intermediates
are easily desorbed from the catalyst surface, thereby suppressing
C–C bond cleavage and thus preventing overoxidation into low-value
products. In addition, Pd 83 Bi 12 Ni 5 NCs possess long-term durability over the course of 16 cycles (1
h/cycle) with an FE for C3 products between 92.5% and 97.6% upon scale-up
deployment in a flow electrolyzer, validating its feasibility in practical
operations.

Background Alterations in the amine submetabolome are closely associated with cellular metabolic status and are important for understanding metabolic regulation under intervention conditions. In this study, a stable isotope labeling derivatization combined with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was employed to characterize alterations in the cellular amine submetabolome. Optimization of chromatographic separation and cellular metabolic quenching procedures improved the separation performance of amine metabolites while enabling more accurate preservation of the metabolic state at the time of sampling. Results The established method was applied to a D-lactate–treated BEAS-2B cell model to evaluate amine submetabolome alterations under different compound intervention conditions. The results demonstrated that selenomethionine (SeMet) and berberine alleviated D-lactate induced abnormalities in the amine submetabolome and showed metabolic regulatory effects consistent with tumor-suppressive trends observed under in vivo experiments. Significance Overall, this analytical strategy enables characterization of the amine submetabolome in complex biological samples and provides a reliable methodological reference for metabolome-based investigations of cellular metabolic alterations.

Constructing MoSe 2 @Ni 3 Se 2 heterostructures optimized active site distribution and charge transport. • Three-dimensional nanostructure achieved high specific surface area and outstanding mechanical stability. • Synergistic Mn/Co/Se regulation optimizes adsorption behavior of reaction intermediates. • Theoretical calculations reveal d-p orbital hybridization as the electronic-scale mechanism for high activity. • Demonstrates highly efficient bifunctional full water splitting activity (1.57 V@10 mA cm −2 ). This paper reports an MCS-MoSe 2 @Ni 3 Se 2 /NF composite electrocatalyst with remarkable performance advantages, achieving breakthroughs in full hydrolysis performance through ingenious structural design and interfacial engineering. The catalyst first constructs MoSe 2 @Ni 3 Se 2 nanosheet arrays on a nickel foam substrate, followed by Mn–Co–Se introduction via electrodeposition for interfacial modification. This forms a unique spherical structure that substantially exposes active sites and optimizes electron transport pathways, significantly enhancing reaction kinetics. Under alkaline conditions, this material exhibits outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity: HER achieves 10 mA cm −2 at just 103 mV overpotential, while OER requires only 263 mV. Notably, when assembled as an integrated water electrolysis cell with simultaneous anode and cathode functions, it drives a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.57 V and operates stably for over 50 h. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that its outstanding performance stems from the precise regulation of the material's d-orbital electronic structure by Mn–Co–Se. This creates a strong, broad d-p orbital hybridization region near the Fermi level, achieving an ideal balance between high conductivity and catalytic activity, thereby optimizing the reaction pathway. This work provides crucial material systems and theoretical insights for designing efficient, stable bifunctional water electrolysis catalysts. The MCS-MoSe 2 @Ni 3 Se 2 /NF structure engineered through interface design enhances water electrolysis performance by optimizing electron transfer pathways and regulating d orbitals. A low-cost Cu-Mo dual-doped carbon nitride nanozyme was synthesized. • It shows excellent peroxidase-like activity via superoxide radical pathway. • A smartphone-based platform enables portable and visual D-PA detection. D-Penicillamine (D-PA), a sulfur-containing amino acid, is used to treat various diseases such as Wilson's disease, fibrotic lung disease, and cystinuria. However, excessive intake of D-PA can cause adverse effects, necessitating the development of accurate quantitative detection methods. This study aimed to establish a visual colorimetric method for D-PA detection using a synthesized Cu-Mo dual-doped carbon nitride nanomaterial ( Cu - Mo - VC - CN ). The synthesis capitalizes on the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of a one-pot thermal polymerization reaction, utilizing only inexpensive and commercially available precursors, namely copper chloride, ammonium molybdate, urea, and vitamin C. The material exhibited exceptional peroxidase-like activity, catalyzing the oxidation of TMB by H 2 O 2 via a superoxide radical pathway. The optimal reaction conditions were: temperature 30 °C, time 30 min, pH 5.5, TMB concentration 0.2 mM, and H₂O₂ concentration 0.2 mM. Steady-state kinetic analysis revealed that the Cu - Mo - VC - CN nanozyme had Michaelis-Menten constants ( K ₘ) of 0.083 mM for TMB and 0.603 mM for H 2 O 2 . Under optimal conditions, the system enabled highly sensitive D-PA quantification with a linear range of 0.5–100 μM and a detection limit of 0.45 μM. The nanozyme was successfully applied to determine D-PA content in pharmaceutical tablets with satisfactory recovery (from 97.73 to 98.27%). Furthermore, a smartphone-based testing platform was established to provide a portable and practical solution for the real-time monitoring of D-PA. This work provides both an efficient strategy for developing multi-metal-doped nanozymes and a reliable colorimetric platform for D-PA monitoring.
