Preparation and entropy regulation study of low thermal conductivity and high strength (ZrHfCeYLaX)O oxides

Chufei Cheng,Ruixin Hao,Jiadong Hou,Fengnian Zhang,Fuhao Cheng,Ziqian Meng,Bei Ren,Yang Miao,Libiao Xin,Xiaomin Wang

In the thermal protection system of spacecraft, the bolts connecting the ceramic to the internal superalloy need to have low thermal conductivity and high strength . Two dense high entropy fluorite oxides (Zr 1/7 Hf 1/7 Ce 1/7 Y 2/7 La 2/7 )O 2-δ (ZHCYL) and (Zr 1/8 Hf 1/8 Ce 1/8 Y 1/4 La 1/4 Pr 1/8 )O 2-δ (ZHCYLP) were designed and synthesized by using the synergistic effect of plasma-assisted ball milling and spark plasma sintering(SPS). Through the synergistic effect of lattice distortion and oxygen vacancy guided by entropy regulation, ZHCYLP synthesized in this study has lower thermal conductivity(1.13 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), higher high temperature strength(192 MPa at 1000 °C) and high temperature phase stability up to 1600 °C than 8YSZ ceramics. The thermo-mechanical coupling finite element analysis results of high temperature bending test show that the variation trend of the maximum stress value of the sample is consistent with the experimental results. This shows that the mechanical and thermal properties of high entropy oxides can predict the variation trend of the maximum stress value in high temperature bending tests. It opens up a new way for designing and synthesizing high entropy oxide materials with low thermal conductivity and high strength which can be applied in the field of heat protection and load bearing.

Sustainable synthesis of magnetic petroleum coke/nonanyl chitosan composite for efficient removal of o-nitrophenol

Omer Ahmed M.,Eltaweil Abdelazeem S.,Abdelhamed Aly M.,Abd El-Monaem Eman M.,El-Subruiti Gehan M.

Worldwide industrialization has grown at a rapid pace, contaminating water resources, particularly with phenolic pollutants that pose a risk to aquatic systems and human health. The goal of this study is to create an inexpensive magnetic composite that can effectively remove nitrophenol (o-NP) using adsorptive means. In this instance, a nonanyl chitosan (N-Cs) derivative was synthesized and then combined with activated petroleum coke (AP-coke) and magnetic Fe 3 O 4 to boost its adsorbability towards o-NP and to facilitate its separation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and zeta potential were employed to characterize the magnetic composite. The experimental results indicated that the Fe 3 O 4 /AP-coke/N-Cs composite possesses a greater affinity toward o-NP with a maximal efficiency reached 88% compared to 22.8, 31.2, and 45.8% for Fe 3 O 4 , AP-coke and N-Cs, respectively. The equilibrium adsorption data coincided with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 291.55 mg/g at pH 6, whereas the pseudo second order kinetic model offered the best fit to the experimental data. Besides, the developed adsorbent preserved satisfactory adsorption characteristics after reuse for five successive cycles. The proposed adsorption mechanism involves the H-bonding, π-π interaction, hydrophobic interactions and electron donor-acceptor interactions. These findings hypothesize that the constructed magnetic composite could efficiently remove nitrophenols from polluted water with high performance and ease-separation.

Synergistic O-Containing Triazine and Imidazole Linker in Covalent Organic Frameworks for Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

Qiushuang Li,Lantian Li,Bing Zhao,Yuqian He,Xiuwen Wang,Wei Kan,Li Sun,Liyan Wang

Electrochemical hydrogen evolution systems with water based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide a promising platform for replacing metal catalysts to drive sustainable development. Until now, rational design of the structure of COFs poses a significant challenge because of the largely overlooked individual or synergistic effects of building blocks and linkers in COFs on their electrocatalytic abilities. Herein, a building block-dependent linker integration pattern is illuminated, and the combination of an O-containing triazine building block with phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole linker successfully yields a COF material, namely, TFPT–PI-COF, which exhibits a distinctive porous structure and high thermal stability. The composite TFPT-PI-COF@NF as the catalyst demonstrates a promising overpotential value of 120 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and delivers a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in alkaline media. The collaborative contributions of O-containing triazine and phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole are experimentally verified, and the computation analysis of the Gibbs free energy further confirms the presence of the abundant and accessible active sites in the porous TFPT-PI-COF for HER. This integrated strategy furnishes a vast foreground for designing and developing other COF-based electrocatalysts.

Heating and P doping promote NiFe₂O₄ to achieve a faster oxygen evolution reaction pathway

Zihang Feng,Zhe Zhang,Xiaoxuan Zhang,Jinsheng Li,Xuefei Lei,Xuanwen Liu

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER)is crucial for the development of energy storage technologies such as water splitting for hydrogen production and metal-air batteries; therefore, developing efficient electrocatalysts is key to advancing OER. NiFe₂O₄, as a typical spinel-structured transition metal oxide, features nickel ions Ni 2+ preferentially occupying tetrahedral sites and iron ions Fe 3+ occupying octahedral sites within its crystal lattice. This unique dual-metal site distribution significantly optimizes the adsorption energy of oxygen intermediates through Ni Fe electronic synergy, overcoming the inherent activity limitations of single-metal oxides. Simultaneously, its high electrical conductivity and robust stability in alkaline environments make it an ideal alternative to precious metal catalysts. However, its intrinsic activity remains constrained by the sluggish kinetics of the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and insufficient exposure of surface active sites. To address this, this study focuses on a breakthrough modification of nickel ferrite NiFe₂O₄: employing a phosphorus doping strategy, the reaction mechanism is successfully transformed from the AEM to the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) during the heating process, with optimization of heating time and temperature parameters. The optimized phosphorus-doped nickel ferrite NFO − P achieves a low overpotential of 229 mV and a Tafel slope of 75.1 mV dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 —its performance significantly surpasses that of pristine NiFe₂O₄ and approaches the level of precious metal IrO₂. This work concurrently reveals that phosphorus doping overcomes the activity limitations of the traditional AEM pathway by weakening metal‑oxygen bonds and activating lattice oxygen, thereby providing a reference for “AEM → LOM” mechanism regulation in transition metal oxide catalysts.

N/O/B-doped phenolic resin-based high-performance porous carbon materials for supercapacitor applications

Yan Ma,Peng Zeng,Yan Ma,Xiaomei Yang

Supercapacitors have been extensively studied for their excellent power density and cycle life, but they are limited by low energy density. This study successfully prepared nitrogen/oxygen/boron (N/O/B) co-doped phenolic resin-based porous carbon materials (NBC) through a sol-gel method combined with high-temperature carbonization and activation processes, and systematically investigated their electrochemical performance in supercapacitors. By adjusting the amount of boric acid and the carbonization temperature, the pore structure and heteroatom doping levels of the materials were optimized. Experimental results demonstrate that when the carbonization temperature is 700 °C and the mass ratio of L-tyrosine to boric acid is 1:1, the obtained sample NBC-700-1 exhibits a high specific surface area (1721 m 2  g −1 ), an abundant micro/mesoporous hierarchical structure, and uniform N/O/B doping (N content: 8.31 at.%, O content: 14.11 at.%, B content: 0.55 at.%). In a three-electrode system, NBC-700-1 (377 F g −1 ) exhibits superior specific capacitance, high rate performance (73% capacitance retention at 20 A g −1 ), and long cycle stability at 0.5 A g −1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte compared to NBC-600-1 (300 F g −1 ), NBC-700-0.5 (290 F g −1 ), NBC-700-2 (268 F g −1 ), and NBC-800-1 (351 F g −1 ). Furthermore, a symmetric supercapacitor assembled with Na 2 SO 4 gel electrolyte achieves an energy density of 29.9 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 550 W kg −1 , along with broad temperature adaptability (−25 to 75 °C) and remarkable flexibility (no significant performance degradation after 180° bending). Additionally, the design of a PVA-based gel electrolyte with wide pH applicability provides new insights for the application of such devices in complex environments.

Self-assembled cyanidin-3-O-glucoside nanoparticles alleviate inflammation and ferroptosis induced by PRRSV infection

Xiaohan Chen,Yipeng Pang,Fructueux Modeste Amona,Zilu Liu,Fang Wang,Yuan Liang,Jiachen Yang,Wanhan Zhang,Xingtang Fang,Xi Chen

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a highly contagious pathogen that causes substantial economic losses in the global swine industry, primarily by impairing reproductive performance and respiratory health. However, current therapeutic approaches remain limited in effectively controlling PRRSV infection. Here, we present self-assembled cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G)-based nanoparticles (C3G-Cs-SeNPs) as a promising antiviral agent against PRRSV infection. These nanoparticles demonstrated excellent stability and biocompatibility, with minimal cytotoxicity in Marc-145 cells. C3G-Cs-SeNPs significantly reduced ROS levels in PRRSV-infected cells, enhancing the antioxidant capacity and mitigating oxidative stress. In addition, they effectively inhibited key stages of the PRRSV lifecycle, including viral internalization and replication, leading to a marked decrease in viral proliferation. Moreover, C3G-Cs-SeNPs alleviated ferroptosis by restoring redox homeostasis through enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity. Mechanistically, these nanoparticles potentially activate the SIRT1/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway, which plays a critical role in regulating inflammation and ferroptosis in PRRSV-infected cells. These findings suggest that C3G-Cs-SeNPs could serve as a novel therapeutic approach to modulate inflammation, ferroptosis, and viral replication in respiratory viral infections. Our study highlights the therapeutic potential of C3G-Cs-SeNPs in combating PRRSV infection, with important implications for viral infection management and respiratory disease treatment.

Dual-functional MgFe₂O₄-PVDF membrane enabling concurrent oil/water separation and catalytic dye degradation

Yawei Shi,Yumei Xing,Keyan Liu,Yan Wang,Ya Sun,Zonglin Pan,Guanghui Ding

Dyes and oil substances are two common pollutants in wastewater, and it is highly expected to remove them simultaneously. In this study, MgFe 2 O 4 was synthesized by co-precipitation and then loaded onto polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to fabricate a MgFe 2 O 4 -PVDF composite membrane, which was successfully employed for concurrent dye degradation through peroxymonosulfate activation and separation of oil-in-water emulsions through one-step single-pass filtration. Under optimum conditions, both Rhodamine B (RhB) and hexane could be efficiently removed by 99.21 % and 99.89 % respectively. The effects of pH, inorganic ions and humic acid were studied, and the system showed wide applicability and good reusability. The reaction mechanism for RhB degradation was proposed based on quenching tests, open circuit potential test, galvanic oxidation process and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The degradation pathway of RhB was proposed according to density function theory calculations for both RhB and its deprotonated counterpart deH-RhB as well as LC-MS analysis, and toxicity evaluation was also performed. The MgFe 2 O 4 -PVDF/PMS system may offer a possible solution for the efficient remediation of complex wastewaters.

Multifunctional PANI–TiO₂–Fe₃O₄@Attapulgite 3D Composite for Synergistic Microwave Absorption and Corrosion Protection

Kai Xu,Pei Liu,Yinxu Ni,Qingqing Gao,Jin Chen,Shuai Yin,Zixuan Ding,Guohui Tang,Changtian Zhu,Fenghua Liu

Electromagnetic (EM) pollution has emerged as a pressing concern, driving the demand for high-performance microwave absorbing materials. In this work, attapulgite (ATP) was employed as a natural, porous scaffold for the in situ integration of amorphous TiO2, Fe3O4, and polyaniline (PANI), constructing a multifunctional composite with tailored dielectric and magnetic properties. The TiO2 and PANI coatings not only induced strong interfacial and conduction polarization but also formed a continuous 3D conductive network, enabling efficient energy dissipation. Benefiting from the magneto-electric synergy among PANI, TiO2, and Fe3O4, the composite exhibited multiple loss mechanisms and excellent impedance matching. As a result, a minimum reflection loss of -56.24 dB was achieved at 11.63 GHz (2.9 mm thickness), with an ultra-wide effective absorption bandwidth of 8.1 GHz. More importantly, by integrating 3D printing with metamaterial-inspired design, the absorption range was successfully extended into the low-frequency region (4–6 GHz), while simultaneously enhancing structural integrity and corrosion resistance. This study offers a scalable strategy for designing lightweight, corrosion-resistant microwave absorbers by combining hierarchical conductive frameworks with multifunctional components, opening new avenues for next-generation EM shielding and stealth technologies.

Visual detection of Auramine O using dual-signal ratiometric fluorescent nanopaper sensor combined portable smartphone

Wenhui Wang,Heera Jayan,Usman Majeed,Xiaobo Zou,Qin Hu,Zhiming Guo

The misuse of additives is a major problem for global food safety, and of particular concern is Auramine O (AO). Although the analysis of AO by fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) has been extensively explored, the development of effective sensitivity enhancement and portable detection solutions based on CDs remains a significant challenge. Herein, we developed a dual-signal ratiometric fluorescent probe (RFP) integrated with fluorescent nanopaper and smartphone application, which has been used to achieve portable visualization and quantitative detection of AO in food and drug samples. The specific response analysis model (RFP) for AO detection was constructed using fluorescence resonance energy transfer and electrostatic attraction between B-CDs and O-CDs. Within a concentration range of 0.0–10.0 μM, achieving a detection limit as low as 12.3 nM. Furthermore, a laboratory device that incorporates portable fluorescent nanopaper into a smartphone was developed to record the color information response ratio (R/B) in combination with the ColorColl application, enabling visual quantitative measurement of AO. This is powerful construction of RFP, which avoids time-consuming synthesis and complex modification. It directly demonstrates the superiority of proportional fluorescence detection over single wavelength detection. This work provides a referable perspective for preliminary monitoring and rapid on-site detection of harmful factors such as AO in food and drug samples.

Rapid pyrolysis mechanism and product distribution of coal model compounds containing typical C–O bonds

Ruotong Cui,Wenlong Xu,Feng Liu,Lei Yu,Jiming Liu,Xi Chen,Yingyun Qiao,Yuanyu Tian

The structure and reactivity of coal is the core problem of coal chemistry, and solving it at the molecular level has been an international unsolved problem. The chemical similarity-based coal chemistry group elevates the study from the macroscopic to the molecular level. However, the previous free radical mechanism lacks experimental confirmation and theoretical computational support. Here, the pyrolysis products of model compounds are first utilized to predict pyrolysis. The hydrogen-donating solvent is then used as a radical trap to confirm the reaction. Subsequently, density functional theory calculations are utilized to aid in the validation. Finally, family components are utilized to demonstrate the universality of the free radical mechanism of coal pyrolysis. This work combines radical trapping with quantum chemical calculations to analyze the radical reaction mechanism of coal pyrolysis in depth at the molecular level. This will provide a theoretical basis for coal pyrolysis and clean and efficient utilization.

Pyrolysis of loofah sponge into N/O self-doped three-dimensional porous carbon for supercapacitor

Qing Xu,Pengcheng Cai,Xuanyuan Ni,Yunxing Zhao,Denian Li,Yong Chen,Haoran Yuan

Electronic-double-layer supercapacitors (EDLC) usually use activated carbon with large specific surface area and abundant pore structure as the electrode active material for adsorption/desorption of electrolyte ions. Featuring huge yield, low price, multi-level structure, and inherent heteroatoms/functional groups, biomass-derived activated carbon has been demonstrating excellent specific capacitance, low electrochemical impedance, and long-term durability in supercapacitor applications. Loofah sponge is an ideal precursor for activated carbon because of its unique cross-linked parallel channel structure that facilitates ion transfer and storage in supercapacitor. Upon pre‑carbonization combined with KHCO 3 -incorporated activation pyrolysis in this study, the loofah sponge is transformed into a three-dimensional hierarchical porous structured carbon (LC-K1–800), while retaining the primary skeleton and heteroatoms (oxygen and nitrogen) of the biomass. The specific capacitance of LC-K1–800 at a current density of 0.2 A g −1 is measured to be 344 F g −1 , and that at a current density of 1 A g −1 is 296 F g −1 . Moreover, the symmetric two-electrode device assembled by the LC-K1–800 has a specific capacitance of 216 F g −1 at the current density of 0.2 A g −1 and a capacitance retention rate of 103.4 % after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles at the current density of 10 A g −1 , showcasing exceptional cycling stability. Additionally, the symmetric supercapacitor assembled with 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte has achieved an energy density of 18 Wh kg −1 in a 1.6 V voltage window. The impressive performance of the LC-K1–800 assembled EDLC is derived from the well-developed hierarchical porous structure, robust carbon skeleton, high specific surface area, as well as the superior hydrophilicity of loofah sponge-derived activated carbon. This work provides an outstanding option for high-performance and cost-effective carbon-based EDLC.

Spin-Magnetic Effect of d-π Conjugation Polymer Enhanced O–H Cleavage in Water Oxidation

Liu Lin,Yunming Xu,Yiting Han,Ruikun Xu,Tongyue Wang,Zemin Sun,Zhenhua Yan

A deep understanding of the mechanism for the spin-magnetic effect on O–H cleavage is crucial for the development of new catalysts for water oxidation. Herein, we designed and synthesized the crystalline Fe-DABDT and Co-DABDT (DABDT = 2,5-diaminobenzene-1,4-dithiol) and optimized an effective magnetic moment to explore the role of the spin-magnetic effect in the regulation of water oxidation activity. It can be found that the OER activity of the catalyst is positively correlated with its effective magnetic moment. Under the external magnetic field, Fe-DABDT with more spin single electrons has a stronger spin-magnetic response to water oxidation than Fe/Co-DABDT and Co-DABDT. The increase in OER current of Fe-DABDT is nearly 2 times higher than that of Co-DABDT. Experimental and density functional theory studies show that magnetized Fe sites could realize nucleophilic reaction, accelerate the polarization of electron spin states, and promote the polar decomposition of O–H and the formation of the O–O bond. This study provides mechanistic insight into the spin-magnetic effect of oxygen evolution reaction and further understanding of the spin origin of catalytic activity, which is expected to improve the energy efficiency of hydrogen production.
