Real-time tracking of metabolites, ions, and biomarkers in sweat using wearable sensors is crucial for advancing point-of-care testing, where improving the stability of these technologies is a major focus. In this research, a compact, highly sensitive, and stable real-time electrochemical sweat sensor capable of monitoring changes in hydrogen ion concentration is developed. By surface functionalizing Ti 3 CNT x and combining it with a polyaniline film, a small, flexible pH sensor is fabricated to track biochemical reactions by examining sweat pH during exercise and wound healing. The fluorinated alkyl silane-modified surface significantly increases the contact angle, enhancing the sensor's performance. The assembled pH sensor demonstrates pH-sensitivity of −42.91 (pH 11–1) and −40.15 mV pH−¹ (pH 1–11), comparable to transition metal oxide-based sensors. Additionally, it shows good selectivity through continuous addition and separated solution methods. The modified Ti 3 CNT x exhibited excellent durability in different ionic solutions for over 30 days. The flexible, precise sensor, developed via scalable screen-printing, can be applied in water quality monitoring, food preservation, product processing, biomarker monitoring, and human health.

Artificial ion channel membranes hold high promise in water treatment, nanofluidics, and energy conversion, but it remains a great challenge to construct such smart membranes with both reversible ion-gating capability and desirable ion selectivity. Herein, we constructed a smart MXene-based membrane via p-phenylenediamine functionalization (MLM-PPD) with highly stable and aligned two-dimensional subnanochannels, which exhibits reversible ion-gating capability and ultrahigh metal ion selectivity similar to biological ion channels. The pH-sensitive groups within the MLM-PPD channel confers excellent reversible Mg2+-gating capability with a pH-switching ratio of up to 100. The mono/divalent metal-ion selectivity up to 1243.8 and 400.9 for K+/Mg2+ and Li+/Mg2+, respectively, outperforms other reported membranes. Theoretical calculations combined with experimental results reveal that the steric hindrance and stronger PPD-ion interactions substantially enhance the energy barrier for divalent metal ions passing through the MLM-PPD, and thus leading to ultrahigh mono/divalent metal-ion selectivity. This work provides a new strategy for developing artificial-ion channel membranes with both reversible ion-gating functionality and high-ion selectivity for various applications.

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is particularly appealing due to the growing demands of clean and renewable energy. Herein, a facile electrodeposition method to construct Rh nanoclusters supported by molybdenum trioxide micro sheets (Rh/MoO 3 ) was developed. The use of MoO 3 support can enhance hydrogen production due to the accelerated electron transfer by Mo. The interaction between the interface of Rh and MoO 3 modulates the hydrogen adsorption energies. The interfacial electron transfer from Rh to Mo optimizes H 2 O adsorption, adjusts the d-band center, and fine-tunes the hydrogen binding energy, hence increasing the inherent hydrogen-evolving activities. Therefore, the Rh/MoO 3 catalyst shows outstanding performance with very low overpotentials of only 34, 49, and 29 mV at a current density of −10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M PBS, 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , and 1.0 M KOH electrolytes, respectively. Our findings also help to create effective catalysts for pH-universal HER by leveraging particle-support interactions.

Pathophysiological acidic-pH hinders the dental biomaterial-based pulp-dentin regeneration. Bioactive glass (BG) synthesized by sol-gel methods had shown odontogenic and pulp regeneration potential. However, the pathophysiological acidic-pH neutralizing potential of BG has not been tested yet. In this study, we aimed to design mesoporous BG-nanoparticles by a well-established sol-gel method and test its odontogenic and acidic-pH neutralizing potential. BG-nanoparticles were synthesized and further characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, and FTIR. Mono-dispersed and spherical mesoporous BG-nanoparticles with size 300–500 nm were successfully fabricated. Effect of BG ionic extraction in DMEM with 0.1–2.5 g/L BG concentrations on proliferation and odontogenic differentiation of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) was analyzed. All the BG ionic extractions did not affect SHEDs proliferation at early time points (day 1 and 3). BG ionic extraction 0.5 g/L robustly enhanced odontogenic differentiation of SHEDs, as shown by the expression pattern of ALP, Col1, DSPP, and matrix mineralization results. The chemical composition of the BG ionic extraction-induced mineralized matrix resembled natural dentin. BG-nanoparticles/alginate paste neutralized the butyric acid solution (pH 5.4) and buffered within pH 8.3 for a month. Our findings showed the odontogenic and pathophysiological acidic-pH neutralizing potential of BG-nanoparticles, indicating its possible application in pulp-dentin regeneration under pathophysiologically challenged acidic environment.

Introduction Specific polo-like kinase (PLK1) silencing with small interface RNA (siRNA) may be an effective approach for PLK1-overexpressed lung cancer. However, low siRNA concentration into cytoplasm of tumor tissue severely limits its application. Materials and methods In this study, a novel triblock copolymer methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(histidine)-poly(sulfadimethoxine) (mPEG-PHis-PSD, shorten as PHD) was synthesized and used to construct novel nonviral gene vector with cationic liposomes. Results The resulting hybrid nanoparticles (PHD/LR) loaded with siPLK1 possessed excellent physiochemical properties. In vitro study indicated that PHD/LR could be efficiently internalized into human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells and downregulated PLK1 protein expression to induce cell apoptosis, which was attributed to pH-induced instantaneous dissociation, efficient endo/lysosomal escape arose from PHD copolymer. Furthermore, in vivo antitumor activity demonstrated that PHD/LR could efficiently accumulated into tumor tissue and silenced PLK1 expression to possess antitumor activity. Conclusion Taken all these together, PHD/LR was expected to be a suitable carrier for specific delivering siRNA for lung cancer therapy.

The UV filter benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is a prevalent environmental pollutant due to its extensive use in personal care products, raising concerns about its ecological risks. This study investigated the pH-dependent oxidative stress effects of benzophenone-3 (BP-3) on Carassius auratus by measuring four key biomarkers—superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, and malonaldehyde in liver tissue. The results demonstrated that BP-3 exposure led to significant oxidative stress, as evidenced by altered antioxidant levels and increased lipid peroxidation. The integrated biomarker response indicated that stress was more pronounced at higher BP-3 concentrations and varied with pH, being greatest under acidic conditions. These findings demonstrate that the toxicity of BP-3 is strongly influenced by environmental pH, highlighting the necessity of incorporating pH variations into ecological risk assessments of ionizable organic pollutants.

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3), a widely used ultraviolet filter in personal care products, has been extensively detected in aquatic environments and poses potential ecological risks. This study innovatively investigated the pH-dependent acute toxicity of BP-3 to three model aquatic organisms— Daphnia magna , Photobacterium phosphoreum , and Danio rerio —by determining the EC 50 and LC 50 values across a pH range of 5.0 to 9.0. Our results revealed that BP-3 exerted greater acute toxicity on all three tested aquatic organisms under acidic conditions (pH 5.0) than under alkaline conditions (pH 9.0). The increased toxicity with lower pH was attributed to the predominance of the more lipophilic molecular form of BP-3, emphasizing the significant influence of environmental pH on BP-3 toxicity. These findings provide essential toxicological data for assessing the ecological risks of BP-3 in diverse aquatic environments, highlighting the necessity of considering BP-3 concentration, environmental pH and exposed species in ecological risk assessments.

Hydrotalcite-group layered double hydroxide (LDH) phases are important in many technical and geological contexts, and in applications ranging from environmental processes to catalysts to cements. This study systematically investigates the roles of Fe in LDH structures across varying pH conditions relevant to concrete environments, combining laboratory-based characterization, synchrotron-based techniques, and thermodynamic modeling. Elevated pH enhances Fe incorporation into the LDH phase, while suppressing ferrihydrite formation. At pH > 11, partial LDH dissolution is observed. Thermodynamic modeling and diffractometry reveal the transformation mechanism: control of the initial pH increases promotes Al(III) and Fe(III) uptake into LDH structures, while further alkalinization (pH > 11) triggers selective Al(III) dissolution, thereby increasing the M 2+ /M 3+ ratio and altering unit cell parameters. These findings elucidate the dynamics between Fe(III) incorporation in LDH and ferrihydrite precipitation, governed by pH-dependent solubility and charge-balance constraints.

Cell-based therapies using macrophages for tumor-targeted drug delivery show great promise, but are hindered by limited drug loading, complex fabrication, and premature payload release. Current hitchhiking strategies often suffer from low cargo retention, nanoparticle endocytosis, and detachment. A universal, simplified system balancing high loading, controlled release, and cellular localization is urgently needed. Here, we report a macrophage-anchored gated nanofibers platform (MAGF) that addresses these challenges via polyphenol-gated electrospun nanofibers. Doxorubicin-loaded PLGA nanofibers are fabricated via electrospinning and coated with a Fe 3 ⁺–tannic acid (TA) supramolecular network, forming a pH-responsive polyphenol gate. This design enables ultra-high drug loading (∼25 wt.%) and minimizes premature leakage under physiological conditions. Importantly, the nanofibers stably adhere to the macrophage surface without internalization, preserving cellular viability, motility, and tumor-homing capacity. Molecular dynamics and density functional theory simulations reveal that strong TA–drug interactions suppress release at neutral pH but dissociate in acidic tumor environments, ensuring site-specific activation. In vivo, MAGF-loaded macrophages demonstrate enhanced drug accumulation in melanoma tumors, significant inhibition of both primary growth and lung metastasis, and favorable biosafety. This work introduces a robust and cell-compatible delivery platform that bridges synthetic nanotechnology with living-cell therapy, offering a generalizable strategy for next-generation, tumor-targeted chemotherapy.

This study introduces a novel pH-responsive Janus emulsifier based on snowman-shaped NH 2 -PS@SiO 2 Janus nanoparticles, demonstrating exceptional interfacial activity and intelligent demulsification control. The synthesized particles achieved a significant reduction in oil-water interfacial tension by 15.08 mN/m at a 1 wt% concentration, while forming stable Pickering emulsions with average droplet sizes of 72.04 μm. The system exhibited rapid and reversible pH-responsive behavior: immediate demulsification occurred under acidic conditions (pH < 7) through amino group protonation, whereas alkaline conditions (pH > 7) maintained stability via deprotonation. Zeta potential measurements confirmed charge-switching capability across a pH range of 2–12, enabling four cycles of controlled emulsification-demulsification. The unique amphiphilic Janus architecture facilitated vertical anchoring at oil-water interfaces, substantially enhancing emulsion stability compared to homogeneous counterparts. This work establishes a versatile platform for smart emulsion systems requiring on-demand destabilization.

The selectivity and desorption capacity of adsorbent materials significantly impact adsorption capacity and recyclability. Developing resin-based boron adsorbents that simultaneously exhibit high specificity, large adsorption capacity, and excellent cycling performance remains a prevalent challenge for the extraction and removal of boron from aqueous systems. In this study, a series of polyurethane nanomaterials with dendritic structures and tertiary N as the pH-responsive branching center were designed and prepared. The particle size and surface morphology of the material were characterized using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The influence of two microstructure dynamic changes, namely “density” and “expansion”, triggered by pH, on its boron adsorption performance was systematically studied. The results showed that the material had excellent specific selectivity. By taking advantage of the protonation property of tertiary N and exploring the adsorption performance of the material under pH regulation, the adsorption capacity could reach up to 172 mg·g −1 , achieving a 28 % increase. Meanwhile, the response characteristic of enhanced hydrophilicity at low pH enabled the material to be restored to its initial state during the desorption process, thus having the ability to be reused multiple times. This research not only presented a high-performance boron adsorbent, but also showcased a new paradigm for designing next-generation adsorption materials through “intelligent response”, offering a brand-new approach for achieving efficient and precise control of the adsorption process.

The safe and effective drug delivery system is important for cancer therapy. Here in, we first constructed a delivery system Cabazitaxel(Cab)@MPN/CS between metal-polyphenol (MPN) and chitosan (CS) to deliver Cab for melanoma therapy. The preparation process is simple, green, and controllable. After introducing CS coating, the drug loading was improved from 7.56 % to 9.28 %. [email protected] /CS NPs released Cab continuously under acid tumor microenvironment. The zeta potential of [email protected] /CS NPs could be controlled by changing the ratio of [email protected] and CS solutions. The positively charged [email protected] /CS accelerate B16F10 cell internalization. After internalized, [email protected] /CS NPs could escape from lysosomes via the proton sponge effect. The permeability of CS promotes the penetration of [email protected] /CS to the deeper B16F10 tumor spheroids. In vivo results showed that [email protected] /CS NPs have a longer retention time in tumor tissues and significantly inhibit tumor growth by up-regulating TUNEL expression and down-regulating KI67 and CD31 expression. Thus, this delivery system provides a promising strategy for the tumor therapy in clinic.
