Thin-Film Solar Cells of an Indium-Modified Silver Antimony Sulfide Selenide Absorber Prepared by Spray Pyrolysis

Mingrui Tang,Junsheng Yu,Hua Tang,Jiang Cheng,Lu Li

Silver antimony sulfide (AgSbS 2 ) is considered a promising photovoltaic absorber material because of its suitable bandgap, large absorption coefficient, and environmental friendliness. However, the photovoltaic performance of AgSbS 2 -based solar cells is far from expectation and the applications of AgSbS 2 are limited by the underdeveloped fabrication technology. Herein, an effective method is developed to improve the photovoltaic performance of devices by adding indium (In) into the Ag–Sb–S system followed by a selenization process. With the addition of In, the morphology uniformity and the crystallinity of the films are simultaneously improved due to the diminished defects such as pinholes and cracks, leading to a better heterojunction interface between Ag 1− x In 2 x Sb 1− x S y Se 2− y and CdS. The Hall effect measurements demonstrate that the carrier concentration of the films effectively increases to 8.16 × 10 14 cm −3 on adding In. The optical characterization suggests that In addition significantly enhances the optical absorption and broadens the absorption wavelength range. Furthermore, the conduction band offset between the absorber and the buffer layer is substantially reduced by adding In, which lessens the carrier recombination at the interface, increasing the carriers transport efficiency. The power conversion efficiency of the Ag 1− x In 2 x Sb 1− x S y Se 2− y device is largely improved from 0.74% (In/Sb = 0) to 1.98% (In/Sb = 0.47).

Insight into the role of varied acid-base sites on fast pyrolysis kinetics and mechanism of cellulose

Chengyu Li,Jun Zhang,Jing Gu,Haoran Yuan,Yong Chen

In the present research, a series of metal oxides were employed to investigate the role of varied acid-base site on kinetics and mechanism for catalytic fast pyrolysis of cellulose using TG-MS and Py-GC/MS. The results showed that the modulation of acidity-to-basicity value via altering metal oxides constituents significantly affected the transformation pathway for cellulose pyrolysis. Higher acidity-to-basicity ratios accelerated the proceeding of deoxygenation process, wherein 39.4% aromatics and 34.7% aliphatic hydrocarbons were achieved using Al 2 O 3 (acidity-to-basicity value of 1.38) at 750 °C with a catalyst/cellulose mass ratio of 15:1. In comparison, lowering acidity-to-basicity ratios mainly facilitated the ketonization and aldol condensation, therefore over 70% ketones was attained in the case of CaO catalysis. The kinetic studies further verified the promotional role of acid-base sites on cellulose pyrolysis with apparent activation energy as low as 33.72 kJ/mol, in comparison with that of cellulose pyrolysis without adding catalysts. From another aspect, the composite metal oxides with better porous structures contributed to deoxygenation conversion for the production of aromatics and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Moreover, plausible reaction pathway for cellulose pyrolysis over metal oxides was proposed. This work would provide a good reference for the realization of product regulation from cellulose pyrolysis via adjusting acid-base sites in metal oxides.

Effect of potassium on catalytic characteristics of ZSM-5 zeolite in fast pyrolysis of biomass-based furan

Jianjun Xiao,Minjiao Yang,Qingfeng Che,Yingquan Chen,Xu Chen,Haiping Yang,Pietro Bartocci,Francesco Fantozzi,Hanping Chen

The effect of potassium in biomass on the catalytic activity of ZSM-5 zeolite in the fast pyrolysis of biomass was investigated using 2-methylfuran (2-MF) as the typical model compound. The mechanism of action of potassium was explored in detail, along with the physicochemical properties of ZSM-5, including crystallinity, pore structure, and surface acidity. The physicochemical properties of ZSM-5 deteriorated to varying degrees after being tainted with different potassium sources (KOH, K 2 CO 3 , KAc, and KCl). Compared with neutral KCl and strong alkali KOH, K 2 CO 3 , and KAc, with weaker alkalinity but larger crystal structure, exerted a larger influence on ZSM-5. Changes in ZSM-5 tainted with K 2 CO 3 were the greatest, and crystallinity, surface area, acidity, and the corresponding yields of valuable aromatic hydrocarbons and gas products, all declined significantly, compared with raw ZSM-5. When the amount of K(CO 3 2− ) on ZSM-5 was less than 0.5 wt%, only minor (<10 %) changes were observed in crystallinity and surface area, but total acidity decreased by over 30 percent. The conversion of 2-MF was increased using ZSM-5 tainted with less than 0.5 wt% K(CO 3 2- ) and less liquid oxygenated compounds and more CO 2 were produced. Appropriate total acidity, adjusted by a tiny amount of K 2 CO 3 , could promote deoxygenation to CO 2. However, the decarbonylation reaction was inhibited, causing a negative effect on monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which was attributed to the large-scale loss of both acidity and physical structure of ZSM-5 caused by more than 1.0 wt% K(CO 3 2- ).

Sustainable Production of Acetonitrile from Microalgae via Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis with Ammonia over Ga/HZSM-5 Catalysts

Qian Yao,Ying Zhang,Yao Fu

We report on catalytic fast pyrolysis microalgae under ammonia atmosphere into acetonitrile over Ga/HZSM-5, which provides a long-term sustainable option for acetonitrile production and microalgae valorization. The effect of various catalysts, reaction conditions and species of microalgae on acetonitrile production was explored systematically. Under the optimized conditions, the maximum carbon yield of acetonitrile from Chlorella vulgaris was 23.4%, and the selectivity of acetonitrile in bio-oil was up to 77.2%. The possible reaction pathways were proposed according to the comprehensive experimental investigation on the conversion of model compounds and intermediates (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, carboxylic acids, furans, and amines). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that Ga was present mainly at the outer surface of zeolite crystals, and a small amount of Ga was doped into the zeolite crystals.

Performance of Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis Using a γ-Al2O3 Catalyst with Compound Modification of ZrO2 and CeO2

Zeyu Xue,Zhaoping Zhong,Bo Zhang,Chao Xu

To investigate the catalytic pyrolysis performance of complex metal oxide catalysts for biomass, γ-Al2O3was prepared through the precipitation method, and then ZrO2and γ-Al2O3were blended in the proportion of 2:8 using the co-precipitation method. Next, CeO2was loaded on the surface of the catalyst for further modification. The three catalysts, A, ZA and CZA, were obtained. The specific surface and acidity of the catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption–desorption and NH3-Temperature Programmed Desorption (NH3-TPD) respectively. The catalytic pyrolysis performance of catalysts for bamboo residues was investigated by Pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Chromatograms were analyzed for identification of the pyrolysis products and the relative amounts of each component were calculated. Experimental results indicated that catalyst A had a good catalytic activity for the fast pyrolysis of bamboo residues. The addition of ZrO2and CeO2could continuously enhance the acidity of the catalyst and further promote the pyrolysis of macromolecular compounds and deoxidation of oxygen-containing compounds. Finally, catalyst CZA, obtained by compound modification, could not only dramatically reduce the relative content of phenol, acid and aldehyde and other oxygen-containing compounds, but also achieved the maximum hydrocarbon yield of 23.38%. The catalytic performance of catalyst CZA improved significantly compared with catalyst A.Keywords:biomass;pyrolysis;catalytic cracking;Py-GC/MS;complex metal oxides

Synergistic degradation on aromatic cyclic organics of coal pyrolysis wastewater by lignite activated coke-active sludge process

Mengqi Zheng,Chunyan Xu,Dan Zhong,Yuxing Han,Zhengwen Zhang,Hao Zhu,Hongjun Han

In current study, the degradation of aromatic cyclic organics (ACOs) of coal pyrolysis wastewater (CPW) by lignite activated coke-active sludge (LAC-AS) process was investigated through the insight into synergistic effect of LAC and microbial community. As a contrast, the study on single AS process revealed that high phenols (>200 mg·L −1 ) exerted irreversible toxicity by eliminating biomass. Meanwhile, quinoline and naphthalene exhibited joint inhibition with phenols on bio-community. Absence of functional genus and insufficient interspecific cooperation caused interrupted biological reaction, leading to degenerated ecosystem and vicious circle. However, LAC-AS performed synergistic degradation of ACOs, leading to developed ecosystems and benign substance metabolisms. Specifically, LAC alleviated toxicity on suspended AS by ACOs adsorption, and the facultative bacteria enriched by LAC exerted synergistic degradation in biochemical processes. Firstly, the bacteria on biofilm facilitated direct interspecies electron transfer for ring-cleavage reaction, and electroactive bacteria ( Cloacibacterium , Hydrogenophaga and Stenotrophomonas ) were critical for the process. Secondly, suspended AS further degraded ring-cleavage products, achieving the interspecific cooperation with biofilm. The synergistic nitrogen metabolism by different paths also contributed to the benign metabolic circulation.

Impacts of multi-element flame retardants on flame retardancy, thermal stability, and pyrolysis behavior of epoxy resin

Bin Zhao,Peng-Wei Liu,Kuan-Kuan Xiong,Hui-Hui Liu,Pei-Hua Zhao,Ya-Qing Liu

N-substituted bis(diphenylphosphanyl)amine RN(PPh 2 ) 2 (PNP; R = CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 Si(OEt) 3 ) and its mononuclear nickel(II) ethanedithiolate complexe RN(PPh 2 ) 2 Ni(SCH 2 CH 2 S) (PNS; R = CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 Si(OEt) 3 ) were prepared and used as multi-element flame retardants for epoxy resin (EP). Results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the incorporation of PNP or PNS restrained the decomposition of EP and also improved the stability of char residues. Moreover, results of limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94), microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC), and cone calorimeter tests proved that both PNP and PNS endowed EP with good flame retardancy. Different chemical structures and action mechanisms of PNP and PNS resulted in different degrees of flame retardancy for EP. Although EP/PNP samples caused a little higher LOI values than those of EP/PNS ones, the incorporation of 7 wt% PNS endowed EP with a lower peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and total smoke production (TSP), thereby indicating better flame-retardant and smoke suppression effects. Furthermore, thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) and pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) were employed to analyze the pyrolysis behavior of EPs and flame retardants . The morphologies of char layers for EPs were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). In comparison to PNP, PNS promoted the formation of a stronger protective char barrier comprising by P/Si/S/Ni elements and also restrained the effects of flammable gases on EP.

Space-confined pyrolysis for fabrication of peacods-like Fe3O4@C-Ni nanostructures for catalysis and protein adsorption

Na Wang,Min Zhang,Libin Liu,Jing Zheng,Jingli Xu,Tasawar Hayat,Njud S. Alharbi

A unique nanostructure of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs)-in/carbon layer/out-Ni NPs was developed and proved to be an efficient catalyst and protein adsorbent. This kind of nanostructure was formed through a space-confined pyrolysis procedure using polydopamine-Ni2+ coated Fe-NTA nanowires as the precursor. A N-doped carbon interlayer derived from polydopamine (PDA) supported a large amount of Ni NPs and entrapped well-defined Fe3O4 NPs, which were obtained through reduction of Ni2+, Fe3+ by carbonized NTA groups and a PDA layer. The contributions of the unique configuration along with the high density of Ni NPs in Fe3O4@C-Ni are significant for improving catalysis and protein adsorption performance, which is expected to be a promising alternative to other conventional catalysts and protein adsorbents. Due to the unique novel nanostructure, this nanocomposite possesses a wide range of applications, not only for catalytic reactions but also for other inhomogeneous reactions.

Ultrasonic spray pyrolysis synthesis of three-dimensional ZnFe2O4-based macroporous spheres for excellent sensitive acetone gas sensor

Li Lv,Yinglin Wang,Pengfei Cheng,Bao Zhang,Fan Dang,Luping Xu

The preparation process and gas sensitivity test of three-dimensional sphere spinel ferrites with well-assembled macroporous structures have been reported in this paper. The three-dimensional ZnFe 2 O 4 macroporous spheres (3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs) were prepared by one-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP), in which self-assembly sulfonated polystyrene (S-PS) spheres were employed as sacrificial template. The as-prepared samples possessed interconnected macroporous with pore diameters about 200 nm can be observed in TEM characterization, which provided more reactive active sites. The catalyst Pd was doped in 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs with the attempt of enhancing gas-sensing performance, which has been confirmed existed as Pd 2+ formation by XRD and XPS analysis. In a comparison with pure 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs, the 0.5% PdO-dopded 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs exhibited a 2 times higher response (18.9) to 100 ppm acetone at 275 °C. Furthermore, the PdO- dopded 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs-based sensor also presented excellent selectivity and good long-term stability towards acetone. The outstanding sensing performance can be attributed to the 3D spheres with interconnect macroporous structure, electronic sensitization and catalytic effects of PdO. The relative sensing mechanism has been discussed in detail.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on lithium storage performance of pyrolitic-PVDF coated hard carbon derived from cellulose

Lingfang Li,Changling Fan,Bin Zeng,Muchu Tan

The effect of pyrolysis temperature on the electrochemical performance of cellulose-derived hard carbon as anode material for lithium ion batteries was discussed in detail. Because of the presence of more oxygen-containing groups, the hard carbon pyrolyzed below 700 °C has larger irreversible capacity. The initial coulombic efficiency is low and the capacity decreases rapidly. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)results show that the ratio of C O to C–O bond becomes very small when higher than 800 °C, most of the oxygen-containing groups and hydrogen disappears. Hard carbon obtained at 1100 °C has higher initial coulombic efficiency and better cycle performance, no voltage hysteresis exists. The number of micropores of HC-1100 is much larger than that of mesopores, which reduces the irreversible deposition of lithium ions in mesopores. However, due to the decrease of interlayer space, lithium storage sites become less and the capacity is a bit lower than HC-800 and HC-950. The hard carbon obtained in 800–1000 °C range has the best comprehensive performance in charge-discharge capacity, initial coulombic efficiency and cycle performance.

Mn/TiO2 catalysts prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method for NOx removal in low-temperature SCR reaction

Boqiong Jiang,Beilong Lin,Zhiguo Li,Shuang Zhao,Ziying Chen

A series of Mn/TiO 2 catalysts were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) method for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx from flue gas at low temperatures. The highest activity of Mn/TiO 2 was obtained with a Mn/Ti ratio of 0.5. When Fe was doped into Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 , the NOx conversion rate on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 was increased by approximately 10 % at 120–180 °C. The samples were characterized by XRD , SEM , H 2 -TPR, and N 2 adsorption analyses. Results revealed that Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 with Mn/Ti ratio of 0.5 presented the lowest crystallinity , the highest surface area, and the highest redox ability. Although the surface area was significantly decreased by Fe doping, it also reduced the crystallinity and crystal size of the catalysts, thereby increasing the O concentration on the surface of catalyst. Moreover, Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 displayed a higher redox ability than the other catalysts. At 120–240 °C, the activation energy decreased from 27.65 kJ/mol on Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 to 14.46 kJ/mol on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 , thereby facilitating the activation of the reaction on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 . Despite that the NO and NH 3 adsorptions were lower on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 than on Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 , the intermediates on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 , particularly nitrates, were easily activated to participate in the reaction, leading to increasing catalytic activity.

A facile pyrolysis synthesis of biochar/ZnO passivator: immobilization behavior and mechanisms for Cu (II) in soil

Wang Ying,Wang Luxing,Deng Xiaoyan,Gao Hongtao

Waste biomass can be recycled to prepare biochar for soil restoration, in which process soil fertility would not be lost. In this work, biochar was prepared from waste pomelo peel, combined with ZnO, to be used to immobilize Cu(II) in contaminated soil, whose maximum adsorption capacity was up to 216.37 mg g −1 . Due to combination of ZnO, the BET surface area of biochar increased from 2.39 to 18.53 m 2 g −1 . Meanwhile, the surface functional groups increased, which was conducive to fixation of metal ion on the surface of biochar. Both pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model fit the experimental data well. Adsorption was easy to happen since the adsorption site on the surface of biochar/ZnO had a strong affinity with Cu(II). In addition, mechanism investigation indicated that Cu(II) was bond with biochar/ZnO mainly by non-bioavailable state (75.6%) primarily. It inferred that biochar/ZnO was an efficient and promising passivator in reducing heavy metal risk in soil.
