(3 S ,3′ S )-astaxanthin ((3 S ,3′ S )-AST) with excellent physiological activity demands accurate chiral-selective detection, yet conventional methods have inherent limitations and SERS technology lacks relevant applications here. In this study, a chiral-selective hydrogel-based SERS chip was prepared by immobilizing aggregated silver nanocages (a-AgNCs) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel for specific and sensitive (3 S ,3′ S )-AST detection. The hydrogel realized selective adsorption of (3 S ,3′ S )-AST, and a-AgNCs provided strong SERS enhancement via electromagnetic-chemical synergistic effect. The sensing system showed excellent stability (intra/inter-chip RSD < 4.22%, signal loss <5% in 6 weeks), a semi-logarithmic linear response for (3 S ,3′ S )-AST in 0.5–500 ng/g. Practical detection in Haematococcus pluvialis (HP) and Phaffia rhodozyma yeast (PRY) powders confirmed no (3 S ,3′ S )-AST in PRY, and the detected contents in HP samples were consistent with HPLC results. This chip establishes a rapid and reliable chiral-selective detection method for (3 S ,3′ S )-AST, and expands SERS application in chiral analysis of food-related natural products. Hydrogel SERS chips enable direct chiral-selective detection of (3 S ,3′ S )-astaxanthin with high sensitivity and reliable real-sample applicability. La 2 (WO 4 ) 3 microwave dielectric ceramics were prepared using a conventional solid-state reaction method. The effects of sintering temperature (875–950 °C) on densification, phase evolution, microstructure, and microwave dielectric characteristics were thoroughly examined. Phase-pure monoclinic La 2 (WO 4 ) 3 ceramics with space group C2/c were obtained. Optimum sintering at 925 °C yielded the highest relative density (96.5%) and uniform microstructure, resulting in excellent properties: relative permittivity ( ε r ) of 10.8, quality factor ( Q × f ) of 21,780 GHz, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency ( τ f ) of −51.1 ppm/°C. Structure-property correlations were clarified by applying the Phillips–Van Vechten–Levine chemical bond theory. Quantitative analysis revealed that the high Q × f is primarily governed by the exceptionally high lattice energy of W–O bonds (average ∼12,307 kJ/mol), which suppresses anharmonic lattice vibrations. The negative τ f correlates with the lower bond energy of La–O bonds (∼420 kJ/mol) compared to W–O bonds (∼578 kJ/mol). A modified atomic packing fraction model demonstrated strong positive correlation with Q × f values, indicating that intrinsic packing efficiency dominates dielectric loss in near-fully dense ceramics. This work establishes quantitative links between microscopic bond characteristics and macroscopic dielectric performance, providing a theoretical foundation for designing temperature-stable tungstate-based materials for co-fired low-temperature ceramic applications.

The highly efficient air flotation hydrocyclone separation technology has been gradually promoted and applied. However, the performance of flocculant reported in the literature needs improvement. In this study, a novel flocculant was synthesized using poly[N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)methacry] (PDPM) and polyether monoamine (PMA) as the main raw materials. The synthesis conditions of the flocculant were optimized based on the oil removal rate. It was found that when PMA M-2095 was used, the resulting product, Cl-0.4-P-0.2-2095, exhibited the best flotation-flocculation oil removal performance. At a dosage of 20 mg/L and a treatment time of 7 min, the oil removal rate of Cl-0.4-P-0.2-2095 reached 90.63%, which was 31.7% higher than that of the reported flocculant. Mechanistic investigations, including measurements of surface tension, interfacial tension, zeta potential, and interfacial elastic modulus, as well as oil-coated bubble experiments, revealed that Cl-0.4-P-0.2-2095 adsorbs onto the surfaces of bubbles and oil droplets. This adsorption enhances the collision and adhesion efficiency between bubbles and oil droplets, thereby improving the flotation-flocculation oil removal performance. This study provides a novel treatment agent for the efficient treatment of produced water from offshore oilfields.

Guanidine units have garnered significant attention in the study of ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials due to their excellent microscopic optical properties, making them ideal systems for developing novel optical devices. A novel guanidinium-templated UV NLO crystal, [C(NH2)3]SbCl4 (GSC), was successfully synthesized via an aqueous solution method. GSC crystallizes in the orthorhombic chiral space group P212121, featuring a seesaw shaped [SbCl4]− anion. Remarkably, GSC exhibits a moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 1.1 × KDP at 1064 nm and a large refractive index difference of 0.2 at 546 nm. This NLO effect originates from the synergistic interaction between the [C(NH2)3]+ unit and the stereochemically active [SbCl4]− unit. This work provides a candidate for the guanidine family of NLO materials.

Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe inflammatory disease primarily affecting premature infants, characterized by high mortality and morbidity, with limited therapeutic options available. While emerging evidence links microbiota to NEC pathogenesis, the role of commensal metabolites in NEC and safe metabolite-based therapies remain unexplored. Metabolomic profiling reveals a significant reduction in 3-indoleacrylic acid (IA), a tryptophan-derived metabolite, in NEC infants and animal models. IA supplementation alleviates intestinal inflammation and tissue damage. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis reveals the activation of STAT1 signaling as a necroptosis driver in intestinal epithelial cells, which is suppressed by IA. Protection is abolished by aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) inhibitor CH-223191 or in intestinal epithelium-specific AhR knockout mice. Oral administration of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis containing the IA-producing fldI gene prevents NEC in mice. Our study uncovers IA as a microbiota-derived therapeutic inhibiting STAT1-driven necroptosis via the AhR-SOCS5 axis, offering a targeted strategy for NEC management.

Among working-age adults in the contemporary era, more than 30% of individuals with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy (DR), a progressive ocular disorder that is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness. Despite its high prevalence, treatment options remain limited. Current therapeutic strategies only focus on the inhibition of neovascularization or prevention of vascular leakage. Additionally, the majority of conventional eye drop formulations fail to deliver drugs efficiently to the retina, further limiting clinical applicability. To address these issues, we herein designed and developed an eye drop formulation based on the chitosan-modified liposomes encapsulating epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), capable of transporting EGCG from the ocular surface to the retina. Mechanistic studies revealed that efficient retinal delivery of EGCG could protect Müller cells against high glucose (HG)-induced injury via SIRT1-BNIP3-mediated mitophagy. In vivo, the developed EGCG@CS-LIP showed enhanced fundus delivery and therapeutic efficacy compared with conventional liposomes or free EGCG systems, attributed to the transient modulation of corneal tight junctions. More importantly, the EGCG@CS-LIP eye drops could effectively increase the expression level of SIRT1 protein and inhibit the apoptosis and damage in retina, thus exerting significant in vivo therapeutic effects for the effective treatments of DR. Lastly, the constructed EGCG@CS-LIP indicated the excellent ocular biocompatibility, highlighting its promise for future clinical translation in DR therapy.

Electrostrictive ceramics are crucial for high-precision actuators due to their low hysteresis, fast response, and low heat dissipation. In this work, Nd 3+ was strategically employed to optimize the electrostrictive properties of x Nd-doped Pb(Ni 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbZrO 3 -PbTiO 3 (PNN-PZ-PT) ceramics. A phase transition from the morphotropic phase boundary to a cubic structure, accompanied by enhanced dielectric relaxor behavior was observed with increasing Nd content, which can be attributed to the disruption of long-range ordered ferroelectric domains caused by aliovalent Nd doping-induced local structural heterogeneities—thereby reducing strain hysteresis and enabling improved electrostrictive response. Notably, outstanding electrostrictive strain of 0.105% and high electrostrictive coefficient M 33 = 10.5 × 10 −16 m 2 /V 2 were obtained under a 10 kV/cm for the 3%Nd-doped PNN-PZ-PT ceramic, superior to other relaxor ferroelectric ceramics. Additionally, this composition exhibits outstanding cycling reliability with only 5% strain degradation over 10 6 electrical cycles, positioning it as a promising candidate for precision micro-actuators applications requiring ultra-stable, high-efficiency electromechanical responses.

Pyroptosis holds great promise for evoking robust anti‐tumor immunity, but many pyroptosis induction strategies rely on caspase‐3 (Casp‐3) activation and face challenges of the immunosuppressive nature of apoptosis and the frequent silencing of gasdermin E (GSDME), a substrate of Casp‐3, in tumors. Here, we report a strategy to rewire the pyroptotic pathway by bypassing Casp‐3 to directly activate gasdermin D (GSDMD). We identify a small‐molecule agonist, (E)‐2,3‐diiodobut‐2‐ene‐1,4‐diol (DIBDO), which undergoes deiodination to release iodide ions upon activation by the tumor‐abundant nucleophile glutathione, thereby catalytically generating singlet oxygen and molecular iodine. This cascade induces oxidative damage that downregulates key mediators of caspase‐9 and caspase‐8 pathways, thereby down‐regulating Casp‐3 activation. This mechanism selectively triggers GSDMD‐mediated pyroptosis, provoking robust immunogenic cell death and inflammatory cytokine release to reconfigure the tumor immune microenvironment. In murine tumor models, DIBDO enhances tumor infiltration of cytotoxic T cells and synergizes with checkpoint blockade therapy to suppress both primary and distal tumors. It can also serve as an in situ or exogenous vaccine to elicit potent and durable antitumor immunity. This work presents a paradigm‐shifting approach to cancer immunotherapy by decoupling pyroptosis from Casp‐3 dependence, offering a promising avenue to expand the scope of immunogenic cell death‐based treatments. This work introduces a small‐molecule agonist, DIBDO, that bypasses Casp‐3 to directly trigger GSDMD‐mediated pyroptosis in tumors. Activated by glutathione, DIBDO generates singlet oxygen and molecular iodine, blocking Casp‐3 pathways and inducing immunogenic cell death. This reconfigures the tumor microenvironment, transforms the tumor cells into in situ or exogenous vaccine, offering a novel paradigm for cancer immunotherapy.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a severe perinatal brain injury that often leads to neurological impairments in survivors. Currently, effective therapeutic strategies for HIE remain limited and require further exploration. Emerging evidence indicates that microglia-mediated neuroinflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of HIE. Nevertheless, clinically effective anti-inflammatory agents specifically targeting HIE are still lacking. Glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) is a biologically significant metabolite involved in various cellular metabolic pathways. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of G3P against hypoxic-ischemic (HI)-induced brain injury by modulating microglial activation. In LPS-treated microglia, G3P suppressed the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α, reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, restored mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and promoted a shift toward an anti-inflammatory microglial phenotype. In addition, G3P treatment in zebrafish showed no toxicity and significantly mitigated HI-induced oxidative stress, while suppressing both the recruitment and pro-inflammatory activation of mpeg1⁺ macrophages and lyzc⁺ neutrophils. Moreover, administration of G3P dramatically reduced infarct volume and alleviated neuronal loss in rats with hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD). Y-maze and Morris water maze tests demonstrated that G3P treatment significantly enhanced spatial learning and memory in HIBD rats. Furthermore, G3P markedly reduced the hyperactivation of microglia and astrocytes in both cortical and hippocampal regions. Mechanistically, Immunofluorescence and Western blot analyses revealed that G3P exerted anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting cyclic GMP-AMP synthase -stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) signalling pathway and its downstream TBK1/the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. These findings highlight G3P as a promising therapeutic candidate for HIE.

Cyanidin-3-O-galactoside (C3Ga), a natural pigment, has various beneficial biological activities and is widely used as a food colorant. However, traditional plant extraction methods are time-consuming and unsustainable. Rapid and sustainable synthesis of C3Ga by engineered microorganisms offers a promising alternative to traditional plant-based methods and deserves to be explored. In this study, the bioproduction of C3Ga by Escherichia coli was achieved for the first time. The biosynthetic pathway of C3Ga from (+)-catechin was constructed by introducing anthocyanidin synthase (ANS) and UDP-galactose:cyanidin galactosyltransferase. Some strategies, including enhancement of the UDP-galactose biosynthesis pathway, identification of efficient ANS, overexpression of the C3Ga transporter, and modulation of multigene expression, were subsequently used to drive the metabolic flux toward C3Ga production. Next, the two-stage process for C3Ga production was optimized to mitigate limitations for further metabolic engineering. Combined with the knockout of β-phosphoglucomutase (ycjU), a newly identified competitive pathway for UDP-galactose, the production of C3Ga finally reached 217.9 mg/L. The strategies used in this study could be applied to the biosynthesis of other anthocyanins and galactosylated natural products.

A homogeneous RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 catalyst was prepared for the hydrogenation of bio-oil to improve its stability and fuel quality. Experiments were first performed on three model aldehydes of acetaldehyde, furfural and vanillin selected to represent the linear aldehydes, oxygen heterocyclic aldehydes and aromatic aldehydes in bio-oil. The results demonstrated the high hydrogenation capability of this homogeneous catalyst under mild conditions (55–90 °C, 1.3–3.3 MPa). The highest conversion of the three model aldehydes was over 90 %. Furfural and acetaldehyde were singly converted to furfuryl alcohol and ethanol after hydrogenation, while vanillin was mainly converted to vanillin alcohol, together with a small amount of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol and 2-methoxyphenol. Further experiments were conducted on a bio-oil fraction extracted by ethyl acetate and on the whole bio-oil at 70 °C and 3.3 MPa. Most of the aldehydes were transformed to the corresponding alcohols, and some ketones and compounds with C–C double bond were converted to more stable compounds.

In this study, a simple and sensitive dual-mode biosensor was designed based on the color of 2,6-dichloroindiphenol (DCIP) and the fluorescence of calcein. The target alkaline phosphatase (ALP) can catalyze the dephosphorylation of L-ascorbic acid-2-phosphate (AAP) to form ascorbic acid (AA) and phosphate ions. The reducing properties of AA can reduce the DCIP from blue to colorless. Meanwhile, phosphate ions can chelate with europium ions (Eu 3+ ) to restore the fluorescence of Eu 3+ -Calcein. In colorimetric mode, the linear detection range for ALP was 1.56-50 U/L with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.27 U/L. In fluorescence mode, the linear detection range was 0.78-25 U/L and LOD was 0.23 U/L. Besides, the selectivity of this dual-mode for ALP was very excellent and the recovery rates in serum samples were also satisfactory.
