Green Ionic Polymer Additives for Multifunctional Integration in Water-Based Lubrication Systems: Lubricity, Anti-Corrosion and Viscosity-Enhancing Properties

Hailong Qiao,Yurong Wang,Qiang Chen,Pingxia Guo,Xiao Liu,Meirong Cai,Feng Guo

Environmentally benign water-based lubricants are attracting increasing attention as alternatives to conventional oil-based lubricants that may cause environmental pollution. Herein, three protic poly(ionic liquid)s (PPILs) are synthesized by combining a copolymeric cation with carboxylate anions of different alkyl chain lengths. The PPILs are employed as additives in aqueous lubricants, and their viscosity-enhancing capability and tribological performance are systematically evaluated. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), electrical contact resistance (ECR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) are used to elucidate the lubrication mechanism. The results demonstrate that PPILs significantly improve the viscosity, corrosion resistance, and tribological properties of water-based lubricants. Notably, the kinematic viscosity of a 6% PPD-Oa aqueous solution increases by two orders of magnitude compared with deionized water, while the corresponding wear volume and coefficient of friction are reduced by approximately 77% and 70%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations indicate that interfacial adsorption and friction-induced chemical processes jointly generate a protective layer at the sliding interface, thereby imparting excellent lubricity and load-bearing capability to the lubricant. Moreover, the three sulfur-free and halogen-free PPILs represent environmentally benign additives with strong potential for application in metalworking fluids and hydraulic systems.

Performance Evaluation of Peanut-Shaped Polystyrene Nanospheres as Profile-Control Agents

Xiaoqiong Hu,Peng Shi,Chuxiang Zhou,Gang Wu,Min Deng,Ting Chen,Shenwen Fang

Polymer microspheres are profile-control agents for plugging high-permeability reservoir zones, regulating injection profiles, and enhancing oil recovery (EOR) owing to their small size and strong retention. However, most studies focus on spherical microspheres, whereas peanut-shaped anisotropic particles remain rarely investigated. Herein, peanut-shaped polystyrene (P-PS) particles prepared through an optimized emulsion-polymerization route reported in our previous work were evaluated as anisotropic profile-control agents for EOR and compared with spherical PS particles (S1-PS and S2-PS). Core plugging tests showed that P-PS particles, with an apparent hydrodynamic diameter of 72 nm and an aspect ratio of 2.44, achieved a plugging efficiency of 85.72% in a 200 mD core, representing increases of 61.56% and 28.69% over S1-PS (160 nm) and S2-PS (65 nm), respectively. SEM confirmed that P-PS particles migrated into the porous medium and were retained within pore spaces. Under 70°C, 200 mD, 1.8 PV, and 1000 mg/L, P-PS produced an incremental EOR of 12.97%, 4.40, and 1.37 percentage points higher than those of S1-PS and S2-PS, respectively. At 5000 mg/L, EOR reached 18.70%, although injection pressure approached the limit. This study provides insight into anisotropic particle transport and retention in porous media and supports their profile-control potential.

Bio-Inspired Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes and Their Effect on the Anti-Fouling Properties of Polysulfone Ultrafiltration Membranes

Mengmeng Wang,Huixiao Ma,Ziyuan Zhu,Yutong Zhao,Fanxin Kong,Xiaocan Zhang

The inherent hydrophobicity of polysulfone (PSf) membranes frequently leads to membrane fouling issues. To address this limitation, a novel composite membrane was developed by incorporating hydrophilic tannic acid-modified carbon nanotubes (TCNT). The TCNT nanomaterial was synthesized by functionalizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs)─known for their exceptional organic compound adsorption capacity─with tannic acid (TA), which exhibits mussel-inspired adhesion properties for surface modification. The TCNT/PSf composite membranes were fabricated via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). Characterization results demonstrated that increasing TCNT content enhanced membrane porosity, enlarged finger-like pore structures, and improved surface hydrophilicity (reduced contact angle). The optimal membrane with 7 wt% TCNT loading achieved outstanding performance: 97% bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and 450 L m −2 h −1 pure water flux (50% higher than the pristine PSf membrane's 300 L m −2 h −1 ). Moreover, the total fouling ratio ( Rt ) significantly decreased from 84% to 53%, confirming the substantially improved antifouling properties of the TCNT-modified PSf membranes. The biomimetic functionalization strategy of TA-CNTs provides a new idea for the development of next-generation anti-pollution membrane materials, and its green modification method is in line with the concept of sustainable development.

Near-Infrared-Responsive Poly(l-Lactic Acid)/poly(l-Lactide-Co-ε-Caprolactone) Shape-Memory Composites Reinforced With Photothermal Hybrid Nanoparticles for 4D Printing

Haiyan Li,Kai Zhang,Shuai Zheng,Jing Ma,Long Zhao,Jialiang Wang,Lili Yin,Yulong Zou

Conventional poly( l -lactic acid) (PLLA) exhibits a relatively high switching temperature, limiting its on-demand actuation under mild biomedical conditions. Herein, poly( l -lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) was incorporated into PLLA to improve chain mobility and elasticity, and (MWCNTs–ZnO)@polydopamine nanoparticles (CZP) were introduced to construct a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive photothermal shape-memory system. The resulting PLLA/PLCL/CZP composites showed improved crystallinity, mechanical performance, and light-triggered actuation. At 1 wt% CZP, the film exhibited optimal tensile properties, with a tensile strength of 24.5 MPa and an elongation at break of 373%. Under 808 nm NIR irradiation, the composites rapidly recovered their original shape at approximately 55°C, enabling remote and mild-temperature actuation. Direct-ink-written 4D-printed scaffolds displayed high print fidelity and enhanced compressive properties, with 3 wt% CZP reaching a compressive strength of 5.2 MPa and a modulus of 0.6 MPa at 40% strain. The scaffolds showed shape-fixity ratios above 95% and recovery ratios above 80%. Biological evaluations revealed acceptable initial cell adhesion, concentration-dependent cytocompatibility, and antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . This work provides a tunable platform for NIR-triggered shape-memory actuation and programmable 4D-printed biomedical scaffolds.

Superhydrophobic, Abrasion-Resistant, Thermally Stable Cardanol-Based UV-Curable Coatings for Self-Cleaning, Oil–Water Separation, and Flame-Retardant/Smoke Suppression Applications

Yibo Zhang,Zhao Zhang,Yixiu Chen,Qing Zhong,Jiaxing Zhang,Hui Chang

Petroleum-based resins face limitations in superhydrophobic and flame-retardant applications, including high surface energy, poor durability under harsh conditions, low oxygen index, and high heat release. This study employs cardanol, which features a C 15 alkyl chain that confers low surface energy and char formation, along with a phenolic hydroxyl group suitable for graft copolymerization. Two rapidly UV-curable cardanol-based coatings were developed. M-PUA incorporates mesoporous SiO 2 and polydimethylsiloxane into cardanol-based polyurethane acrylate. At 3 wt% loading of mSiO 2 , it achieves water contact angle (WCA) > 151°, maintains WCA above 144° after 100 abrasion cycles, and exceeds 150° after 24 h immersion in pH = 1 or 13. The coating demonstrates efficient self-cleaning and oil/water separation, delivering over 98% separation efficiency across 20 cycles for six different oil/water mixtures, with a maximum flux of 2389.86 L m −2 h −1 . The B-PUA coating constructs a phosphorus-containing network by grafting di(2-(methacryloxy)ethyl) phosphate onto cardanol-Dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate. It achieves a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 28 and reduces total heat release by 67.2% and total smoke production by 52.2%. Both coatings exhibit low volatile organic compound emissions and rapid curing, providing an integrated and practical strategy for functionalizing cotton fabrics. These materials show strong potential for self-cleaning, oil/water separation, and flame-retardant applications.

PTC Behavior Based on Thermomechanical Properties in Graphene Nanosheets/Silicone Rubber Nanocomposites

Fanze Meng,Bi Wu,Xiaoguang Yang,Peng Wang,Haitao Ma,Deli Duan

Graphene nanosheets/silicone rubber (GNs/RTVSR) nanocomposites were fabricated to investigate the effect of thermomechanical–electrical coupling mechanism on their positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behavior. Heat treatment and graphene nanosheet size design were employed to tailor the thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of the nanocomposites. Heat treatment removed organotin from the RTVSR matrix, as confirmed by XPS, FTIR, and in situ SEM, thereby enhancing the resistance stability of the nanocomposites. The slight variations in PTC behavior observed after treatment were associated with nanosheet size and transient temperature responses. Based on these results, the PTC mechanism governed by thermomechanical behavior and viscoelasticity was discussed. The steady-state PTC behavior of nanocomposites was described by a prediction model that combined thermomechanical and electrical conduction percolation. The PTC values of the nanocomposites with heat treatment and different GNs sizes could be predicted by this model. Meanwhile, DMA and other thermomechanical analyses revealed a strong correlation between time-dependent resistance attenuation and viscoelasticity of the nanocomposites. The PTC mechanism composed of steady model and transient analyses unmasked intensity differences and process deviation of resistance change rate. It explained the temperature self-limited heating behavior of nanocomposites.

Low Molecular Weight Polyesters Bearing Designed End-Groups as Poly(Vinyl Chloride) Plasticizers Having High Plasticizing Efficiency, Low Migration Rate and Long-Term Hydrophilicity

Longjun Li,Guochen Wang,Like Sun,Changtong Song,Dong Chen,Yuhong Ma,Wantai Yang

Small molecular plasticizers, widely used in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), suffer from drawbacks including high migration rate and safety concerns. Low molecular weight polyesters are developed to address the challenges. In this contribution, adipic acid and 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol are used as monomers, and different monohydric alcohols are applied as capping agents to prepare symmetrically capped poly(2-methyl-1,3-propanediyl adipate) (PMPA) and asymmetrically capped poly(2-methyl-1,3-propanediyl adipate) (APMPA). The prepared PMPA and APMPA with different molecular weights are evaluated as PVC plasticizers. The results demonstrate that both PMPA and APMPA exhibit better plasticizing efficiency than that of common dioctyl phthalate (DOP). For instance, with 70 phr APMPA, PVC-APMPA3 (Using MPEG 600 g/mol as a capping agent) shows an elongation at break of 460% and a glass transition temperature ( T g ) of −19.1°C, along with significantly reduced migration loss (mass loss < 2% after 7-day immersed in petroleum ether). Furthermore, it presents an excellent hydrophilic durability, from about 24° decreases to 22° after immersed in water for 28 days. Notably, APMPA3, featuring asymmetrical α- and ω-end groups, not only demonstrates better plasticizing performance and low migration than that of DOP, but also offers the plasticized PVC an excellent and long-term hydrophilicity.

Multilayer Polyurethane/Silver Nanowire Composite Coatings for Simultaneously Achieving Low Infrared Emissivity and High Optical Transparency

Kangce Chen,Anyan Zhao,Lieji Yang,Chaoqun Li,Wei Peng,Haiyan Zhuang

Low-emissivity and highly transparent coatings are of considerable interest for applications requiring simultaneous infrared radiation control and optical transparency. However, transparent polymer matrices typically exhibit relatively high intrinsic infrared emissivity, while the incorporation of low-emissivity fillers often leads to a loss of optical transparency, making it difficult to balance these properties. In this work, a highly transparent polyurethane (PU) matrix was prepared via a prepolymer method, and a multilayer PU/silver nanowire/PU (PU–AgNW–PU) composite coating was fabricated by introducing AgNWs to simultaneously regulate infrared emissivity and optical transmittance. The PU film (40 μm) exhibited an infrared emissivity of 0.65 (8–14 μm) at 80°C. After incorporation of AgNWs, the composite coating showed a reduced infrared emissivity of 0.45 while maintaining visible-light transmittance above 80% (400–700 nm) and haze below 20%. This multilayer structural design provides an effective strategy to balance low infrared emissivity and high optical transparency in PU-based coatings.

Three Birds With One Stone: Facile Synthesis of a Bio-Based Phosphorus–Nitrogen Flame Retardant for Polylactic Acid Toward Enhanced Fire Safety, Toughness, and Biodegradability

Shijie Zhang,Xihui Wang,Yanting Dong,Kai Peng,Zhongwei Wang,Qing Yu,Guiqing Cheng,Liang Song,Yuxi Han

Polylactic acid (PLA) suffers from high flammability and brittleness, limiting its practical applications. In this study, a bio-based multifunctional flame retardant (PPM) was synthesized via a one-pot method using phytic acid, 1,4-phthalaldehyde, and melamine. Incorporation of PPM into PLA markedly enhanced the material's flame retardancy, mechanical performance, and biodegradability. At a loading of 4.0 wt%, the composite achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating, with the limiting oxygen index increasing to 28.7%. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release of PLA/PPM-4.0 decreased from 641.8 kW/m 2 and 87.8 MJ/m 2 to 565.3 kW/m 2 and 79.7 MJ/m 2 , respectively, while the time to PHRR was extended by 14 s, indicating a substantial improvement in fire safety. The good compatibility of PPM with PLA and the formation of hydrogen bonds enabled the composite to maintain a tensile strength comparable to that of neat PLA, while significantly increasing the elongation at break. Specifically, the tensile strength of PLA/PPM-4.0 remained at 94.1% of neat PLA, whereas elongation at break increased from 3.76% to 5.84%. Moreover, the polar hydrophilic groups in PPM enhanced the water uptake of PLA, thereby facilitating enzymatic degradation. This work provides a straightforward and effective strategy for developing high-performance PLA-based materials.

Nonisothermal Crystallization Kinetics and Dynamic Rheological Behavior of Concentrated Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPVC)

Zhao Wang,Jingqi Wang,Yongjian Zhao,Xinyan Shi

Soft-grade ethylene propylene diene monomer/polypropylene (EPDM/PP) thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) suffer from compromised processability and unstable phase morphology due to high rubber loading and oil extension. Herein, we report a concentrated thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPVC) masterbatch strategy via peroxide-mediated dynamic vulcanization of highly oil-extended EPDM and PP, enabling flexible hardness tuning via PP dilution. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of the PP matrix in TPVC was systematically quantified via the Jeziorny-modified Avrami model, Mo model, and Kissinger method, revealing a dual effect of dispersed EPDM phase: accelerating PP crystallization via heterogeneous nucleation (crystallization activation energy reduced by 22.36 kJ/mol vs. pure PP) while restricting chain mobility. Dynamic rheological tests combined with time–temperature superposition (TTS) analysis (Han and van Gurp-Palmen curves) confirmed that the T80P20 system fully conforms to the TTS principle with a broad processability window, and all formulations exhibit elasticity-dominated viscoelastic behavior (phase angle ≤ 20°). This work provides quantitative kinetic and rheological guidance for industrial processing optimization of soft TPVs.

The EPDM/PP TPV Compatibilized by the In Situ Reaction Product of Bio-Based Itaconic Acid and Magnesium Oxide Possessed Shape Memory Performance

Mengmeng Xu,Liheng Chen,Jujie Sun,Long Han,Shiyu Wang,Chengzhong Zong

EPDM/PP TPV compatibilized by the graft reaction of magnesium itaconate on EPDM and PP chains, which was derived from the in situ reaction of magnesium oxide and bio-based itaconic acid, was successfully obtained. The compatibilized EPDM/PP TPV achieved better shape memory performance and mechanical property compared with the TPV without compatibilization. TPV-4 obtained excellent mechanical property, with the tensile strength and elongation at break of 13.8 MPa and 773%. TPVs compatibilized by the graft products of MgIA owned a higher shape recovery ratio of above 85% compared to 72.6% of TPV-0 without compatibilization. The good compatibility on EPDM and PP interphase was beneficial to the stress delivery that resulted in the outstanding shape memory property of the compatibilized TPV. On the other hand, the ionic interaction of the MgIA graft products in the compatibilized TPV could reinforce TPV, which generated better mechanical performance of TPV. The whole shape memory behavior of TPV-6 measured by DMA was clearly presented in the stress–strain-temperature curve, which further demonstrated the good shape memory performance of TPV. The results of SEM image, FTIR analysis, and DMA curve demonstrated the fine compatibility of EPDM and PP phase in the compatibilized TPVs.

Electrospinning Preparation of High-Starch-Content Composite Micro/Nanofibers: Using Water as the Dispersion Medium

Chen Tian,Xuankang Li,Fan Mo,Linwei Liang,Ling Zhou,Hao Wu,Xipo Zhao

Starch-based fibers possess remarkable advantages, including renewability, excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and environmental friendliness, offering broad potential in biomedical and food-packaging applications. To overcome the poor spinnability and limited starch content of native starch—caused by high amylopectin content, short chain length, and insufficient molecular entanglement—this study employs isoamylase to debranch gelatinized starch, producing enzymatically treated starch (EGST, Enzymatically Gelatinized Starch Treated), in order to regulate the branching structure and chain-length distribution of starch, and further investigate its rheological behavior and spinnability in aqueous systems. Using water as the dispersion medium, EGST is blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) aqueous solution to prepare spinning dopes, and the effects and underlying mechanisms of enzymolysis degree, blend ratio, and electrospinning parameters on rheological behavior, spinnability, and fiber morphology are systematically investigated. By optimizing the rheology of the EGST/PVA system and the electrospinning conditions, continuous and bead-free high-starch-content composite micro/nanofibers with a starch content of up to 60% and diameters of 200–400 nm are successfully fabricated. This work demonstrates the water-based fabrication of high-starch-content composite micro/nanofibers using water as the dispersion medium and provides a feasible strategy for the fabrication of starch composite nanofibers with high starch content and good processability.
