Ag–Fe2O3 nanocomposites with enhanced catalytic activity for reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Shiben Liu,Yingjie Chen,Lifeng Dong

Hybrid nanostructures can be multifunctional and even possess enhanced properties. Ag–Fe2O3 nanocomposites and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated and applied to catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Compared with Ag NPs, Ag–Fe2O3 nanocomposites demonstrated enhanced catalytic activities. Furthermore, due to their magnetic properties, Ag–Fe2O3 nanocomposites could be easily separated from the reaction mixture and recycled through an external magnetic field. These findings will help us design hybrid nanostructures with catalytic activity and explore other potential applications of magnetic nanocomposites.

Stress sensitive electricity based on Ag/cellulose nanofiber aerogel for self-reporting

Qiufang Yao,Bitao Fan,Ye Xiong,Chao Wang,Hanwei Wang,Chunde Jin,Qingfeng Sun

A self-reporting aerogel toward stress sensitive slectricity (SSE) was presented using an interconnected 3D fibrous network of Ag nanoparticles/cellulose nanofiber aerogel (Ag/CNF), which was prepared via combined routes of silver mirror reaction and ultrasonication. Sphere-like Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with mean diameter of 74   nm were tightly anchored in the cellulose nanofiber through by the coherent interfaces as the conductive materials. The as-prepared Ag/CNF as a self-reporting material for SSE not only possessed quick response and sensitivity, but also be easily recovered after 100th compressive cycles without plastic deformation or degradation in compressive strength. Consequently, Ag/CNF could play a viable role in self-reporting materials as a quick electric-stress responsive sensor.

C@Ag core-shell structure as lubricating additives towards high efficient lubrication

Ao Dong,Fan Xiaoqiang,Zhu Minhao

Efficient cooperative lubrication can be achieved via the introduction of core-shell structure lubricant additives with hard core and soft shell, for obtaining the expected anti-wear performance from the structural changes in the friction process. In this study, C@Ag microspheres with a core-shell structure were prepared by the redox method with carbon spheres as the core and Ag nanoparticles as the shell. Their tribological behaviors as base oil (G1830) additive with different concentrations were investigated in detail. Compared with base oil, the addition of C@Ag particles at 0.5 wt% can reduce the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear volume (Wv) up to 15.5% and 88%, respectively. More importantly, C@Ag particles provide superior lubrication performance to single additive (like carbon sphere (CS) and Ag nanoparticle). C@Ag core-shell particles contribute to the formation of tribo-film by melt bonding of flexible Ag and carbon sphere (CS) toward excellent self-repair performance and high-efficiency lubrication. Hence, core-shell structural nanoparticles with hard-core and soft-shell hold bright future for high-performance lubrication application.

SERS-active liposome@Ag/Au nanocomposite for NIR light-driven drug release

Yangyang Zhao,Jing Zhao,Guiye Shan,Dongmei Yan,Yanwei Chen,Yichun Liu

It is important to control drug release and detect the distribution of drug molecules before and after release. In this work, liposome@AgAu nanocomposite is prepared for drug delivery, which not only can control drug release by near infrared laser irradiation but also can monitor drug molecules by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and fluorescence signal during the release process. The liposome@AgAu core/shell nanocomposite prepared by the galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) shows tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption peaks from visible to near-infrared region and good biocompatibility. Comparing to pure doxorubicin (DOX) molecules, liposome@AgAu nanocomposite loading DOX exhibit lower cytotoxicity by MTT assay. After loading into liposome@AgAu, the fluorescence signal of DOX disappear due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer from DOX to metals shell. On the contrary, the SERS signal of DOX in liposome@AgAu is obviously increased. Furthermore, the liposome@AgAu nanocomposite shows photothermal conversion ability under resonance laser irradiation. Under 633   nm laser irradiation, the liposome@AgAu nanocomposite loading DOX can release drug molecules for killing cancer cell. Meanwhile, the fluorescence signal from DOX appears after drug release from liposome@AgAu, but the SERS signal is not obvious. Therefore, this nanocomposite can provide a platform for photothermal controllable drug release and optical signal targeting for drug molecules.

Fan Zhen,Li Chunxia,Xu Meijie

ZnO/Ag nanocomposite was prepared via in situ method by using silver nitrate and ZnSO 4 as the raw material. ZnO and ZnO/Ag were characterized by utilizing SEM, UV-vis, XRD, FTIR, and so on. The photocataytic degradation behaviors of ZnO and ZnO/Ag for trimethylamine (TEA) in air and solution were studied. The results indicated that ZnO/Ag had better photocatalytic degradation properties on trimethylamine under the condition of 0.06 g catalyst, 2 h photocatalytic time, and 15 A light intensity, and the degradation rates of TEA were up to 44 and 67% in air and solution, respectively. Furtherly, ZnO and ZnO/Ag also indicated perfect photocatalytic degradation properties toward to organic compounds in wastewater. Especially, the harmless treatment of triethylamine was achieved by using photocatalytic degradation method that provided a novel method for treating triethylamine. In all the above results leaded to a good application prospect of ZnO/Ag in the degradation of organic compounds in air and solution.

Improving Surface Antimicrobial Performance by Coating Homogeneous PDA-Ag Micro–Nano Particles

Shuilin Wang,Fanping Meng,Zhimin Cao

Implants and other medical devices are prone to bacterial infections on their surface due to bacterial attachment and biofilm formation. In this study, silver nanoparticles were generated in situ onto regulated synthesized polydopamine particles, and the optimal amount of silver nitrate was determined. Composite micro–nano particles were then deposited on a titanium alloy surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to confirm that the titanium alloy surface was successfully coated with PDA-Ag. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and three-dimensional optical profilometry were utilized to analysis the morphology of the micro–nano particles and the surface morphology after deposition. The diameters of the polydopamine particles and silver nanoparticles were 150 nm and 25 nm, respectively. The surface roughness values decreased from 0.357 μm to 25.253 μm because of the coated PDA-Ag. Morphology and chemical composition analyses of the modified surface indicated that the PDA-Ag particles were uniformly bonded to the substrate surface. Antimicrobial assays illustrated that the PDA-Ag-modified surface possessed resistance againstEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureusattachment, with an effectiveness of 96.14 and 85.78%, respectively. This work provides a new strategy and theoretical basis for tackling medical-related surface infections caused by bacterial adhesion.

In situ formed Ag nanoparticle decorated LiMn2O4 cathodes with outstanding electrochemical performance

Wangqiong Xu,Qiling Li,Shubiao Xia,Zhe Li,Feixiang Cheng,Shimei Guo

Surface coating is an effective approach for realizing the commercialization of cathode materials. Nowadays, ionically conducting surface coatings are commonly used to improve the electrochemical stability of LiMn2O4. In this work, LiMn2O4 cathodes decorated with in situ formed Ag nanoparticles with high electronic and ionic conductivity are prepared via a simple calcination process. The detailed microstructural mechanism of the influence of Ag on the electrochemical performance enhancement of spinel LiMn2O4 is uncovered by spherical-aberration-corrected (Cs-corrected) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The results demonstrate that the Ag coating helps to promote the transport of Li+ and strengthen the cycling stability by alleviating the decomposition of the electrolyte and manganese dissolution. Accordingly, the capacity retention rate of the optimized 5 wt% Ag/LiMn2O4 sample reached 80% after 900 cycles with an initial discharge-specific capacity of 100 mA h g−1 at 5 C (1 C = 148 mA h g−1). This work indicates that Ag coating is a promising technology for producing high-energy density lithium-ion batteries.

Cross-Flow Catalysis Behavior of a PVDF/SiO2@Ag Nanoparticles Composite Membrane

Wenqiang Wang,Xi Chen,Chu Zhao,Bowu Zhao,Hualin Dong,Shengkui Ma,Liying Li,Li Chen,Bin Zhang

A blend of Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) and SiO2microspheres inN,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) underwent phase inversion to form a PVDF/SiO2membrane with SiO2microspheres in the membrane’s pores. Subsequently, the SiO2microspheres have been used as platforms for in site Ag nanoparticles (NPs) synthesis, forming a composite membrane. Benefitting from the full exposure of Ag NPs to the reactants, the composite membrane shows high catalytic reactivity when catalyzing the reduction ofp-nitrophenol under a cross-flow. The catalytic reaction follows the first-order kinetics, and the reaction rate increases with an increase in the amount of Ag NPs in the membrane, the reaction temperature, and the operating pressure. What is more, highly purified products can be produced and separated from the reactants in a timely manner by using the composite membrane. Keywords:Ag nanoparticles;catalysis;composite membrane;separation;SiO2microspheres

A simple approach towards citrate-stabilized Ag nanoparticles with widely tunable sizes

Tingting Bai,Peng Lu,Zhirui Guo,Lu Xiang,Lianke Liu

Hydroquinone (HQ) can quickly reduce Au or Ag precursors only in the presence of preformed metallic seeds at room temperature without stabilizing effects and therefore is appealing for controllable synthesis of citrate-stabilized spherical Ag or Au nanoparticles (NPs). In this work, we examined the conventional room-temperature growth of citrate-stabilized Ag NPs through hydroquinone reduction in the presence of NaBH 4 -reduced Ag seeds. By control experiments and electron microscopy analysis, we reveal that this growth process is essentially under kinetic control, unlike those of Au NPs. As a result, the final Ag NPs contain a mass of kinetically favored plate-like nanostructures. Further evaluation experiments found that the selective reducibility of HQ remains at elevated temperatures. Inspired by this, we developed a thermal seeding approach for uniform citrate-stabilized Ag NPs with tunable diameters over the range 15–150 nm by simply altering the amount of Ag seeds, without previously necessary multi-cycle growth or multi-parameter adjustment.

Facile preparation and good performance of nano-Ag/metallocene polyethylene antibacterial coatings

Li Lin,Wang Yunli,Zhu Yingchun

Metallocene polyethylene/nano-silver coatings were prepared by a facile air-spray method on polymer films. Different from the prevailing strategy to endow polyethylene with antibacterial performance, we used metallocene polyethylene sol and nano-silver as a precursor to deposit coatings on polymers at a relatively low operating temperature. Antibacterial coatings with excellent mechanical properties, water resistance, and low silver release were achieved. The composite coatings were examined in terms of surface characteristics, mechanical properties, and antibacterial activity against two representative bacterial strains including Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). The composite coatings exhibited favorable microstructure, good mechanical properties, and suitable crystallinity. The antimicrobial tests indicated that the fabricated composite coatings showed promising antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . Furthermore, Ag ions released by the composite coating after 30 days were under 1.2 ppb. These results indicated a promising prospect of the composite coating for wide antibacterial applications.
