Exploiting earth-abundant cocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is of great interest. Herein, earth-abundant CoP was used as a cocatalyst to fabricate a CdS nanorod based photocatalytic system. Meanwhile, visible light-driven H2 evolution over the CoP decorated CdS nanorods was investigated. Moreover, the electrochemical behavior and photoelectrochemical behavior of the CdS/CoP photocatalytic system were explored to deeply demonstrate the essential role that CoP played in the photocatalytic process. Lastly, the photocatalytic mechanism was preliminarily discussed. The results indicated that the photocatalytic activity of the CdS nanorods could be remarkably enhanced due to the introduction of CoP. Under optimal conditions, a rate of H2 evolution of approximately 2.12 mmol h−1 was achieved and the apparent quantum yield was up to 27.1% at 435 nm, which was about 20 times higher than that over the CdS nanorods and 1.5 times higher than that over the Pt loaded CdS nanorods, respectively. This dramatic photocatalytic activity of the CoP modified CdS nanorods may be ascribed to the low H+ reduction overpotential on the CoP particles and the efficient electron transfer between CdS and CoP. The present work demonstrates that CoP is a promising alternative to Pt as an efficient cocatalyst for CdS.

A novel visible-light-active CdS@g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst was synthesized via a chemisorption method. This core@shell structure catalyst exhibited enhanced photocatalytic H 2 production activity under visible-light (λ ≥ 420 nm) irradiation. The nano-sheet g-C 3 N 4 was successfully coated on CdS nanoparticles with intimate contact. When the content of g-C 3 N 4 in the hybridized composite is 3 wt. %, the hydrogen-production rate of the CdS@g-C 3 N 4 is 2.5 and 2.2 times faster than pure CdS and bulk g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. Superior stability was also observed in the cyclic runs. The improvement in stability and activity result from the ability of the π-conjugated g-C 3 N 4 material in transporting photo-induced holes. The core@shell structure promoted separation of the photo-generated electron-hole pair and accelerated the emigration speed of the hole from the valence band of CdS. This effect also results in a greatly improved amount of hydrogen production . The possible mechanism for the photocatalytic activity and stability of CdS@g-C 3 N 4 are tentatively proposed.

1D porous CdS nanoparticles/TiO 2 nanofibers heterostructure has been fabricated via simple electrospinning and a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) process. The morphology, composition, and optical properties of the resulting CdS/TiO 2 heterostructures can be rationally tailored through changing the SILAR cycles. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB) of the as-synthesized heterostructured photocatalysts were investigated under visible light irradiation. Compared to TiO 2 nanofibers, the as-obtained CdS/TiO 2 heterostructures exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production and decomposition of RhB under visible-light irradiation. The heterojunction system performs best with H 2 generation rates of 678.61 μmol h −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation which benefits from the two effects: (a) the 1D porous nanofibrous morphology contributes to not only more active sites but also more efficient transfer of the photogenerated charges (b) the synergetic effect of heterojunction and photosensitization reducing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.

Solar-driven hydrogen (H 2 ) generation utilizing photocatalysts has received extensive attention because of its potential to mitigate the global energy crisis and environmental problem. The implementation of efficient H 2 production strongly relies on stable, active, and low-cost photocatalysts. In this work, we report the designed synthesis of macroporous ZnO/ZnS/CdS composite spheres as a highly active photocatalyst for H 2 production via solar-driven water splitting. The composite spheres were synthesized by a facile solvothermal reaction paired with controllable ion-exchange processes. The resulting material exhibits superior photocatalytic activity, delivering a high H 2 production rate of ~11.37 mmol h −1 g −1 under light illumination (250–780 nm, with an ultraviolet light intensity of 34 mW cm −2 and visible light intensity of 158 mW cm −2 ). Such performance enhancement can be mainly ascribed to the synergic effects of the composite structure: (1) formation of coherent ZnO/CdS and ZnS/CdS heterojunctions at nanoscale, facilitating charge separation of photoinduced electron/hole pairs, (2) highly accessible inner surface of the meso/macroporous ZnO/ZnS/CdS composites for rapid mass transfer of electrolyte, and (3) enhanced visible light scattering capability induced by their large particle size.

Highly ordered TiO 2 nanotube arrays are synthesized and utilized in preparing front-side illuminated photoelectrodes of CdS quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The CdS quantum dots (QDs) are adsorbed on the ordered TiO 2 nanotube arrays by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method (SILAR). Taking the advantages of high surface area and large size of ordered pores of the TiO 2 nanotube arrays, the reaction solutions for SILAR processes can easily penetrate into the photoelectrodes; and the formed CdS QDs can be homogeneously dispersed on the TiO 2 nanotube walls with high coverage. In order to improve photovoltaic performance of QDSSCs, the other important components including counterelectrode, polysulfide (S 2− / S x 2 - ) electrolyte, and cycles of SILAR processes for preparing CdS QDs sensitized photoelectrodes are optimized. With thermally treated CuS counterelectrode, pure deionized water based polysulfide (S 2 − / S x 2 - ) electrolyte, and 15 cycles of SILAR processes prepared CdS QDs sensitized photoelectrode, the QDSSC can achieve the highest power conversion efficiency about 3.22% under full sunlight illumination (100 mW cm −2 , AM 1.5G), which is a comparative value among the pure CdS QDs sensitized solar cells.

In this work, CdS quantum dots (QDs) were proposed as electrochemical sensing materials for ciprofloxacin (CIP) determination for the first time. The CdS QDs-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibited a well-defined anodic stripping response in acidic solution, attributed to the release of Cd(II) ions from CdS QDs. The influences of supporting electrolyte and CdS QDs concentration on the response of CdS QDs-modified electrode were investigated and optimized. When CIP was added into the solution, the anodic stripping current of Cd(II) on CdS QDs/GCE decreased due to the complexation of CIP with in situ generated Cd(II) ions from CdS QDs. A linear relationship existed between the anodic stripping voltammetric response of CdS QDs/GCE and CIP concentration in the range from 1.0 × 10 −7 to 1.0 × 10 −5 mol L −1 . The detection limit (3S/N) was 2.2 × 10 −8 mol L −1 . The applicability of the CdS QDs-modified electrode for CIP determination was demonstrated in biological fluids.

Despite of the importance of enantiomers , the fluorescence sensing of enantiomers and the interpretation of the “preferential interaction” still remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we report the recognition of tyrosine (Tyr) enantiomers by chiral N -acetyl- L -cysteine ( L -NAC) capped CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) under alkaline experimental condition. L -Tyr could greatly quench the fluorescence of CdSe/CdS QDs, while D -Tyr displayed no effect on the fluorescence. The one-step synthesized chiral L -NAC-CdSe/CdS QDs demonstrated high selectivity for Tyr enantiomers. In particular, the mechanism of chiral recognition has been studied by UV/vis absorption spectra and circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The changes of intensity and sign of CD spectra corroborated the attachment of L -Tyr to the surface of QDs, which may be valuable aids in obtaining a better understanding of the possible mechanism of enantioselective recognition.

As the highest energy facet of wurtzite CdS, (0 0 2) facet is well worth investigating toward the contribution in photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution. In this study, flower-like CdS with highly preferred (0 0 2) facet was fabricated through a low temperature mixed-solvothermal strategy. The mixted-solvent of diethylenetriamine (DETA) and ethyl alcohol (EtOH) was used to inhibit the growth of (1 0 0) and (1 0 1) facets. For comparison, porous flower-like, belt-like and net-like CdS samples with different preferred degrees of (0 0 2) facet were controllably synthesized by the addition of H 2 O in different proportions. The preferred orientation degrees of (0 0 2) facet were qualitative proved by the mathematical fitting of XRD patterns. As expected, the flower-like CdS exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity on H 2 evolution under visible light without any co-catalyst. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic H 2 production increased with the increasement of exposed (0 0 2) facet, which suggested that (0 0 2) facet of CdS played a critical role in improving the photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the growth mechanisms of CdS with various morphologies were investigated and proposed in detail.

A magnetic photocatalyst, CdS/CoFe2O4/rGO, has been successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the as-obtained composite photocatalyst was evaluated using the degradation of tetracycline. When compared with single CdS and CoFe2O4, the hybrid material (CdS/CoFe2O4/rGO) can enhance the photocatalytic activity. The photocurrent responses and PL spectra indicate that the composite photocatalyst can effectively separate the electron–hole pairs and restrain their recombination. This was attributed to the high charge carrier mobility of rGO and the heterostructured photocatalytic system, which promotes the separation of charge carriers. In all, the CdS/CoFe2O4/rGO photocatalyst, as a strong magnetic photocatalyst, is promising for further practical application in wastewater treatment.

Strategies employed to fabricate an efficient photoanode with ZnO nanowires (NWs) arrays and CdS–CdSe co-sensitizers were investigated. A detailed procedure for growing long ZnO NWs which are suitable for the application in quantum dot sensitized solar cells was discussed, and several optimized parameters were obtained for fabrication of the ZnO NWs with large aspect ratio. CdS and CdSe layers were deposited on the surface of the ZnO NWs by a successive ionic-layer adsorption and reaction method and the deposition process was optimized according to the performance of the solar cells fabricated with the ZnO/CdS NWs and the ZnO/CdS/CdSe NWs arrays, respectively. The relationship between the thickness of the sensitizer layer and the performance of the devices was also discussed in detail. Transmission electron microscopy observation shows that ∼7 nm thick CdS layer and ∼5 nm thick CdSe layer can be easily achieved on the ZnO NWs at an optimal deposition condition. UV–vis absorption spectra demonstrate that the light absorption range of the ZnO/CdS/CdSe NWs can be almost extended to the whole visible range. Through an optimization of the photoanode fabrication, which mainly includes the synthesis of the ZnO NWs arrays and the deposition of the CdS and CdSe layers, a short circuit current density as high as 18.63 mA/cm 2 with an overall efficiency of 3.06% can be obtained for the resulting device.

A simple, low-temperature synthesis approach is reported for planting CdS-sensitized 1D ZnO nanorod arrays on the 2D graphene (GR) sheet to obtain the ternary hierarchical nanostructures, during which graphene oxide (GO) as the precursor of GR acts as a flexible substrate for the formation of ZnO nanorod arrays. The hierarchical CdS-1D ZnO-2D GR hybrids can serve as an efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst for selective organic transformations. The fast electron transport of 1D ZnO nanorods, the well-known electronic conductivity of 2D GR, the intense visible-light absorption of CdS, the unique hierarchical structure, and the matched energy levels of CdS, ZnO and GR efficiently boost the photogenerated charge carriers separation and transfer across the interfacial domain of hierarchical CdS-1D ZnO-2D GR hybrids under visible light irradiation via three-level electron transfer process. Furthermore, the superior reusability of ternary hybrids is achieved by controlling the reaction parameters, i.e., using visible light irradiation and holes scavenger to prevent ZnO and CdS from photocorrosion. This work demonstrates a facile way of fabricating hierarchical CdS-1D ZnO-2D GR hybrids in a controlled manner and highlights a promising scope of adopting integrative photosensitization and co-catalyst strategy to design more efficient semiconductor-based composite photocatalysts toward solar energy capture and conversion.

The effect of erythorbic acid (EA) on the aqueous formation of CdS quantum dots (QDs) at room temperature was explored in this work. Without N 2 protection, CdS QDs were synthesized in water by a one-pot non-hot-injection approach at room temperature. The Cd and S sources were CdCl 2 and Na 2 S, respectively, together with 3-mercapto-propionic acid (MPA) as the passivating ligand. The experimental results indicate that the use of the oxygen scavenger, i.e., EA, was critical for the formation of the CdS QDs with reasonably good optical properties, and it is also important to tune experimental parameters such as MPA-to-Cd molar ratios, pH, and reactant concentrations. The mechanism about the EA promoted formation of CdS QDs was discussed in terms of NMR, IR, in situ absorption, and photoemission studies. The very reason for the EA promoted formation of CdS QDs is due to its reducibility and passivation on the QD surface (particularly in alkaline environment). The present study suggests that the use of EA could be a practical means to enable the room-temperature formation of QDs in water.
