Enhanced leachate concentrate degradation across variable pH ranges using Cu@ATP-CTS Fenton-like catalysts for H₂O₂ activation

Cuicui Xu,Yue Lv,Xia Qin,Fanbin Zhang,Hongyun Ren,Xujie Lan,Xiyang Li,Xingwei Tao

Landfill leachate nanofiltration concentrates (LLNC) contain complex organic pollutants that are difficult to treat. This study developed a copper-doped attapulgite-chitosan composite catalyst (Cu@ATP-CTS) for efficient LLNC degradation in a Fenton-like system. The incorporation of attapulgite extended the effective pH range of Fenton reactions from 2 to 8, overcoming traditional limitations. Optimized via response surface methodology, the catalyst achieved 89.02% UV 254 removal, 73.86% COD removal, and 77.24% TOC removal within 115 min under optimal conditions. Copper played a crucial role in H₂O₂ activation, cycling between Cu 0 , Cu + , and Cu 2+ to generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH), the key species driving pollutant degradation. The Cu@ATP-CTS catalyst also demonstrated strong stability and reusability over five cycles. This study provides a robust and sustainable method for LLNC treatment, offering significant potential for application in landfill leachate and wastewater management.

Decalcification and carbonation actions investigated during alkali activation-induced calcium (alumino) silicate hydrates C-(A-)S-H gel evolution

Yufei An,Yiping Su,Gang Li,Shuoyang Liang,Yingying Cai,Ruiheng Zhang,Xuehua Shen,Feng Yan,Zuotai Zhang

CO 2 capture through mineral carbonation extends the applicability of carbon sequestration by enabling storage in various cementitious materials derived from solid wastes. Calcium-containing cementitious materials receive extensive attention due to their potential for carbon capture, however, the underlying mechanisms both decalcification and carbonation during composition-structure evolution remain to be fully elucidated. Herein, a mineral carbonation strategy was reported to enhance carbon uptake performance, depending on the evolution stage of calcium (alumino) silicate hydrates (C-(A-)S-H) gel induced by alkali activation. Sequential dynamic monitoring and experimental characterizations confirmed that the decalcification and carbonation processes are closely linked to Ca-bonding states within the C-(A-)S-H structure. The results indicate that the short chains of alumino-silicate and the majority of the weakly bonded Ca phases are more prone to carbonation. Estimation of carbonation capacities also revealed that samples with 3h-activation exhibit the highest carbonation capacities (80.5 %), showing the higher carbonate potential with free Ca and weakly bound Ca (e.g. Ca(OH) 2 and interlay Ca in tobermorite-like structure) than samples with more intralayer Ca. Our work can provide new insights into the understanding of alkali activation induced decalcification and the improvement on carbonation capacities in early-formed C-(A-)S-H analogues.

Enhancing Zn2+/H+ Joint Charge Storage in MnO2: Concurrently Tailoring Mn’s Local Electron Density and O’s p-Band Center

Haijian Huang,Hao Feng,Ziyu He,Yanan Huang,Jiawei Xu,Chengzhi Hu,Zhangxian Chen,Zeheng Yang,Weixin Zhang

Enhancing proton storage in the zinc-ion battery cathode material of MnO2 holds promise in promoting its electrochemical performance by mitigating the intense Coulombic interaction between divalent zinc ions and the host structure. However, challenges persist in addressing the structural instability caused by Jahn–Teller effects and accurately modulating H+ intercalation in MnO2. Herein, the doping of high-electronegativity Sb with fully occupied d-orbital in MnO2 is reported. The Sb doping strategy engenders the formation of Mn–O–Sb path in the structure with a strong dipole polarization field, which facilitates the delocalization of eg orbital electron in Mn and thus mitigates the Jahn–Teller effects. Simultaneously, adjusting the level of Sb doping in MnO2 leads to modulation of the p-band center of O, optimizing its interaction with hydrogen and thereby enhancing proton storage. Consequently, MnO2 doped with 6% Sb exhibits commendable performance in both rate capability and cycling endurance, delivering 113 mAh g–1 at 2 A g–1 after 2000 cycles. This investigation underscores the crucial role of electronic structural engineering in elevating the electrochemical performance of cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries.

Low Permeability Membrane Regulated by Main/Side-Chain Bisulfonated Polybenzimidazole and CAU-10-H for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Cuicui Li,Tongtong Gao,Wanzhen Wu,Xinpu Zhou,Shuyu Zhang,Guangpeng Ma,Xianfeng Guan,Shuang Wang

A series of composite membranes (sPBIp3-CAUX) are prepared by using modified sulfonated polybenzimidazole with an optimal side link grafting degree of 30% as a polymer matrix and then doping with CAU-10-H. The hydrophobic alkyl side chains and hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups easily form microphase separated structures due to the polarity difference, which is conducive to the enhancement of proton conductivity. The introduction of CAU-10-H into the polymer effectively prevents the passage of vanadium ions because the vanadium ion transport path becomes more tortuous. The sPBIp3-CAU2 membrane has low vanadium permeability (3.1 × 10–9 cm2 min–1) and excellent ion selectivity (9.16 × 106 S min cm–3). In addition, the sPBIp3-CAU2 membrane shows good cell performance at 60 mA cm–2 with CE of 93.32% and EE of 83.03% compared with those of Nafion 117.

CYP6B6 mediated adaptation to capsaicinoids in the generalist Helicoverpa armigera and specialist H. assulta: Transcriptional response and metabolic detoxification

Tengfei Xiong,Mingyue Yu,Mei Li,Christopher A. Reilly,Xinghui Qiu

Capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin are the principal pungent compounds in hot peppers. The generalist Helicoverpa armigera and the specialist H. assulta are two of the few insects that can feed on hot pepper fruits. To further understand the mechanisms behind physiological adaptation to capsaicinoids in the two agricultural pests, we investigated the transcriptional response and metabolism capacity of CYP6B6 orthologs from the two closely related species to the capsaicinoids. The results showed that the expression of CYP6B6 was either weakly or moderately induced by capsaicin in a tissue-specific and dose-dependent manner. CYP6B6 induction to greater extent was observed in the larval midguts of the cotton bollworms, indicating that inducible defense is more robust in the generalist. The two CYP6B6 enzymes were able to efficiently metabolize both capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin, and HassCYP6B6 exhibit a slightly higher activity towards capsaicin than HarmCYP6B6, as evaluated by the specific activity and Vmax values. Multiple known and yet to be elucidated metabolites were detected in the reactions catalyzed by CYP6B6s, with dehydrogenation at the terminal carbon followed by N-macrocyclization and aliphatic hydroxylation being the dominant pathways. The data support the hypothesis that these two Helicoverpa species have well adapted to capsaicinoids via their high P450-mediated detoxification ability.

Biobased comb polyurethane hot-melt adhesives consisting of dangling fatty acid chains and H-bonds for tailoring bonding strength

Zhen Huang,Shimin Geng,Yizhen Chen,Ying Li,Mingen Fei,Renhui Qiu,Tingting Chen,Wendi Liu

Traditional polyurethane hot-melt adhesives often fall short in achieving high bonding strength and recyclability, and their dependence on non-renewable resources poses a significant hurdle for sustainable development. In this study, a palm oil-based diethanolamide (POEA) containing a long aliphatic chain was synthesized to develop comb thermoplastic polyurethane hot-melt adhesives (POPUs) with high biobased content, superior adhesion strength, and reusability. The microphase separation structure of POPUs was manipulated through the incorporation of dangling fatty acid chains and hydrogen bonds, resulting in the adhesives with excellent mechanical properties, with an optimum tensile strength of 5.37 MPa and an elongation at break of 282 %. As a hot-melt adhesive, it achieved a maximum lap-shear strength of 7.34 MPa on steel and maintained an average strength of 95 % of its initial value across multiple bonding cycles. Moreover, its lap-shear strengths with wood and glass remained at 6.57 MPa and 3.57 MPa respectively, fully meeting the requirements for interior decoration. Additionally, it was unexpectedly discovered that the adhesives possessed fluorescence characteristics, which can be applied in fields such as cultural relic restoration and anti-counterfeiting.

Ultraductile Cementitious Structural Health Monitoring Coating: Waterborne Polymer Biomimetic Muscle and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Assisted C-S-H Dispersion

Bo Pang,Zuquan Jin,Yunsheng Zhang,Zhiyong Liu,Wei She,Penggang Wang,Yong Yu,Xiaoying Zhang,Chuansheng Xiong,Ning Li,Guowen Sun,Peng Zhao,Guojian Liu,Xiaoyun Song,Song Gao

Cement-based sensors (CBSs) have demonstrated potential in structural health monitoring (SHM) despite rare applications due to their poor flexibility and sensing accuracy/protection with robustness. Herein, a promising strategy is reported to design a waterborne epoxy resin (WEP)-modified cement-based composite coating sensorcapable of simultaneous stable SHM and durable protection. The interpenetrating network (IPN) formed by WEP within cement paste is bionic to the toughness and crack resistance of biological muscle tissue and balances the ion permeation performance and polarization of hydration products. The polymerization-redispersion progress and mechanism of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel modified with [3-(2-aminoethylamino)-propyl]trimethoxysilane silsesquioxane (C-POSS) are characterized and revealed. The results show that the muscle-like IPN increases the cement-based coatings’ maximum deflection angle to 30° and improves the monitoring accuracy of compressive, tensile, and fatigue microchanges of concrete structures to more than 95%. The POSS···Ca 2+ ···C-S-H interaction in C-POSS partially transferred the intra-adhesive hydrogen bonds surrounding the nanoconducer into electrostatic bridging ones to maintain an excellent electromechanical conductive dispersion.

Low-temperature curing epoxy self-lubricating anticorrosion coatings synergistically enhanced by hyperbranched polysiloxanes and MoS2/h-BN heterojunction particles

Kaiming Yang,Feifei Wang,Bingrui Shi,Zhenlong Zhang,Weixu Feng,Guoquan Qi,Hongxia Yan

Developing low-temperature curing and high-performance self-lubricating anticorrosion coatings is a challenge for solving energy waste and environmental problems caused by wear and corrosion. Herein, molybdenum disulfide/hexagonal boron nitride (MoS 2 /h-BN) heterojunction particles, prepared by an inexpensive, efficient and solvent-free ultrasonic-assisted ball milling method, are used as solid lubricants and corrosive media barrier. Meanwhile, hyperbranched polysiloxane with terminal epoxy groups (HSiEp) is utilized to improve both the dispersion of the particles and the interfacial bonding strength between the particles and the epoxy binder. Compared with neat epoxy coating, the average friction coefficient of 45.0 wt% MoS 2 /h-BN/6.0 wt% HSiEp/EP coating decreases from 0.38 to 0.19, while the coating resistance (R 1 ) increases from 9.98 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 to 3.33 × 10 6 Ω·cm 2 . This is mainly attributed to the “soft-hard” particle synergy and the high barrier synergy of HSiEp and MoS 2 /h-BN heterojunction particles. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the development of low-energy-consumption and high-performance epoxy self-lubricating anticorrosion coatings.

Interfacial Auδ−–OV–Ti Structure Promoted C–H Bond Activation for Selective Oxidation of Fatty Alcohols to Fatty Acids

Yu Su,Rong Fan,Jiabao Li,Yangxi Liu,Ziyuan Zheng,Xin Zhou,Xiang Feng,Yibin Liu,Hui Zhao,Xiaobo Chen,Xingong Zhang,Chaohe Yang,Hao Yan

Oxidation of fatty alcohols to fatty acids is still challenging due to the sluggish activation of the C–H bond over Au supported on reducible oxides with a coordination-saturated structure. Herein, we constructed an efficient interfacial Auδ−–OV–Ti structure by tuning the crystal forms of TiO2. Compared with TiO2-rutile exposed by (110) and (111) crystal facets, TiO2-anatase can exploit the defect (101) crystal facet to obtain rich oxygen vacancies (OV), inducing electron migration from TiO2-anatase support to Au species to form electron-rich Auδ− species. Specifically, the synergistic catalytic effect between the OV–Ti and Auδ− species greatly enhances the adsorption of alcohol and thereby overcomes sluggish activation of the C–H bond caused by the electron pushing effect triggered by long carbon chains. Consequently, the Au/TiO2-anatase catalyst shows excellent isooctyl alcohol conversion (69.5%) and isocaprylic acid selectivity (67.9%) under base-free conditions. The catalytic system is further extended to the oxidation of other fatty alcohols to fatty acids with excellent catalytic performance.

Mechanism of Ag-enhanced CuBi2O4 inactivation of Escherichia coli in a photocatalytic Fenton system

Wang Wanchun,Chi Yangxu,Sun Jiahong,Zhou Feng,Zhan Su

In this work, Ag/CuBi 2 O 4 composite photocatalyst films with excellent photocatalytic sterilization properties were prepared by photodeposition. The photocatalytic activity of silver-modified CuBi 2 O 4 (Ag/CuBi 2 O 4 ) under the photocatalytic-Fenton coupling system was verified by its inactivation rate of Escherichia coli in seawater. The results showed that the photocatalytic sterilizing performance of CuBi 2 O 4 loaded with Ag in the presence of trace amounts of H 2 O 2 was significantly improved. 15Ag/CuBi 2 O 4 possessed the optimal photocatalytic activity, and its sterilizing rate in 30 min could reach 96.6%. Its sterilization rate in 30 min could reach 96.6%, which is about 70% higher than that of pure CuBi 2 O 4 . Meanwhile, the mechanism of the enhanced sterilization performance of Ag/CuBi 2 O 4 in the photocatalytic-Fenton coupled system was investigated. Firstly, according to the electrochemical results, the loading of Ag can significantly improve the charge separation efficiency of CuBi 2 O 4 . And promotes the conversion of H 2 O 2 to hydroxyl radicals(·OH); Secondly, the valence band potential of 15Ag/CuBi 2 O 4 is more positive than that of CuBi 2 O 4 , which suggests that Ag loading can enhance the oxidation of CuBi 2 O 4 cavities. Comprehensive radical trapping experiments demonstrate that ·OH and holes (h + ) are the main active species for inactivating Escherichia coli (E. coli). In this work, effective conversion of H 2 O 2 to ·OH in a wide spectral range was achieved by loading Ag nanoparticles on the surface of CuBi 2 O 4 , which provides a new idea for the development of photocatalytic-Fenton coupling technology and ballast water treatment. A Study of the 3.3 and 3.4 μm Emission Features in Proto-Planetary Nebulae*

Bruce J. Hrivnak,T. R. Geballe,Sun Kwok

Medium-resolution spectra have been obtained of seven carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs) and one young planetary nebula from 3.2 to 3.8 μm, an interval containing the prominent hydrocarbon C–H stretches at 3.3 and 3.4 μm due to aromatic and aliphatic structures, respectively. The 3.3 μm feature is newly identified in IRAS 23304+6147, 22223+4327, and 06530-0213 and is confirmed in Z02229+6208. Three of the PPNs emit in the 3.4 μm feature, two of these being new identifications, IRAS 20000+3239 and 01005+7910, with two others showing possible detections. The 3.3 and 3.4 μm emission features in IRAS 22272+5435 are seen in the nebula offset from the star but not at the position of the central star, consistent with the 2003 results of Goto et al. A similar distribution is seen for the 3.3 μm feature in IRAS 22223+4327. All of the PPNs except IRAS 22272+5435 show Class A 3 μm emission features. These observations, when combined with those of the approximately equal number of other carbon-rich PPNs previously observed, demonstrate that there are large differences in the 3 μm emission bands, even for PPNs with central stars of similar spectral type, and thus that the behavior of the bands does not depend solely on spectral type. We also investigated other possible correlations to help explain these differences. These differences do not depend on the C/O value, since the Class B sources fall within the C/O range found for Class A. All of these 3.3 μm sources also show C2 absorption and 21 μm emission features, except IRAS 01005+7910, which is the hottest source at B0.

Role of graphene oxide as a powerful nano-catalyst in sodium hydroxide-activated slag and its impact on interfacial transition zone

Hong Zhang,Ming Chen,Tiantian Liang,Zanpeng Zhang,Changhui Yang

The use of nanocarbon materials to enhance the toughness of fragile cementitious materials has attracted increasing attention for investigation. This study examines the effects of incorporating graphene oxide (GO) into NaOH-activated slag (AAS) pastes and mortars, focusing on workability, phase composition, mechanical properties, and the local mechanical properties of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between sand and paste. The experimental results indicate that the addition of GO decreases the flowability of NaOH-AAS pastes, with noticeable aggregation at concentrations above 0.03 wt%. Furthermore, GO enhances the hydration degree of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), leading to an increased amount of C-A-S-H gel without introducing new phases. In terms of macro performance, incorporating 0.03 wt% GO significantly improves the compressive and flexural strengths of NaOH-AAS mortars by 10.6 % and 17.9 %, respectively. Additionally, the presence of GO reduces the ITZ thickness from 30 to 15 micrometres in NaOH-AAS mortars, which likely contributes to the enhanced mechanical performance.
