K+-directed co-assembly of alginate and gellan gum enables coating-free enteric HPMC hard capsules with programmed drug releases

Chuqi He,Bingde Zheng,Zhenyu Liu,Zhongyi Shi,Xiaoyun Chen,Mi Zhang,Xingyong Liu,Chaoxing Chen,Panpan Zheng,Xueqin Zhang,Jing Ye,Meitian Xiao

Enteric hard capsules are conventionally manufactured by applying coatings to pre-formed shells, a process requiring stringent control. Here, we report a strategy to directly integrate enteric functionality into hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-based hard capsules using an ion-regulated supramolecular gel composed of sodium alginate (SA) and gellan gum (GG). Potassium ions (K + ) direct the co-assembly of SA and GG by screening charges, coordinating with carboxylate groups, and reorganizing the hydrogen-bonding network. A multiscale approach, combining microscopy, spectroscopy, and simulations, reveals that SA and GG chains co-assemble primarily through hydrogen bonding into aligned aggregates. K + consolidates the network, reducing intermolecular distances and promoting fibrillar coarsening with fiber alignment. This yields a compact structure with enhanced mechanical strength and pH responsiveness. An optimized formulation (SA:GG = 0.7:0.4 wt% with 0.35 wt% K + ) exhibits stable viscoelasticity and suitable gelation kinetics, enabling reproducible capsule fabrication. Dissolution tests confirm gastric resistance at pH 1.2 for 2 h and rapid disintegration at intestinal pH 6.8, with >80% drug release within 45 min. Moisture-sorption modeling demonstrates that gastric resistance is retained after storage, with early-stage absorption being diffusion-dominated (apparent diffusion coefficient ca. 10 −5  mm 2 ·h −1 ). By linking ion-regulated molecular assembly to targeted enteric performance, this polysaccharide-based strategy offers a scalable, green platform for next-generation hard capsules, eliminating solvent-intensive coating and advancing sustainable manufacturing. High local electric fields stabilized by dual Schottky junctions enable interfacial water regulation and K⁺ enrichment for durable CO2 electroreduction

Bao Liu,Xuanwei Zhao,Dan Li,Lin Ma,Jia Zu,Maoyu Wang,Ye Sun,Yuanming Chen,Miao Yu

Curvature-independent high-intensity local electric fields (LEFs) are realized. • Dual Ag-Zn/ZnO Schottky junctions effectively stabilize the formed LEFs. • The strong LEFs facilitate interfacial water regulation and K⁺ enrichment. • >95% CO Faradaic efficiency across − 1.0 to − 1.4 V vs .   RHE over 120 h. Localized electric fields (LEFs) are known to substantially boost electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECO 2 RR). Nevertheless, conventional LEFs rely heavily on high-curvature nanostructures and inevitably undergo structural reconstruction and rapid field decay. Herein, we construct Ag nanoparticle-decorated Zn/ZnO nanosheets with dual Schottky junctions to create curvature-independent, high-intensity (4.1 × 10 7 V m −1 ) and long-duration stable LEFs. The catalyst delivers > 95% CO Faradaic efficiency across − 1.0 to − 1.4 V vs .   reversible hydrogen electrode and maintains robust stability over 120 h of continuous electrolysis. In situ spectroscopic characterizations verify favorable *COOH stabilization and accelerated *CO generation–desorption kinetics. The constructed strong LEF optimizes the interfacial microenvironment by disrupting rigid hydrogen-bonded water networks, stabilizing the K + –H 2 O solvation structures, and promoting interfacial K + enrichment. This work clarifies the critical role of LEF-regulated interfacial water structure in determining CO selectivity and breaks the conventional performance trade-off among activity, selectivity, and durability for high LEF electrocatalysts. Highly efficient Co-based catalysts supported on K-modified alumina for selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols to alkyl cyclohexanols

Zhipeng Tian,Xiaoxin Chen,Tao Liu,Junyao Wang,Chao Wang,Riyang Shu,Jianping Liu,Ying Chen

Selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolic compounds derived from the pyrolysis lignin-oil to desired products is a promising route in the high-value utilization of biomass-derived products. As high as 99.99% guaiacol conversion and 96.70% cyclohexanol selectivity are obtained over optimized Co/1 K–Al 2 O 3 catalyst, which are better than those Co-based catalyst reported in previous studies. Highly dispersed Co particles provide more metal active sites and better chemisorption of guaiacol molecules, which promotes HDO activity. Importantly, with the increase amount of K species doped in Al 2 O 3 support, the total amount of acid sites on catalyst decreases and the strong acid site disappear, which inhibits unwanted conversion of cyclohexanol to the byproduct cyclohexane. It can be found that with proper amount of acid sites and strength, the selectivity of cyclohexanol can be maximized during selective HDO reaction of guaiacol. The kinetic study also shows that the activation energy from cyclohexanol to cyclohexane increases from 62.08 kJ/mol over Co/Al 2 O 3 catalyst to 86.11 kJ/mol over Co/1 K–Al 2 O 3 catalyst, implying that the reaction barrier improves, which hinders further removal of hydroxyl group on cyclohexanol. Besides, selective HDO reactions using other typical phenols as substrates over Co/1 K–Al 2 O 3 catalyst were performed and good alkyl cyclohexanols selectivities are observed.

A new strategy for achieving high K+ storage capacity with fast kinetics: realizing covalent sulfur-rich carbon by phosphorous doping

Wenrui Wei,Yulong Zheng,Minghua Huang,Jing Shi,Lei Li,Zhicheng Shi,Shuai Liu,Huanlei Wang

Designing carbon anodes with rich heteroatoms and dilated graphitic interlayer spacing via a one-step synthesis process plays a vital role in accelerating the practical application of potassium ion batteries, but it is still a big challenge. Herein, P-doped S-rich mesoporous carbon (PSMC) is prepared by direct phosphate-assisted carbonization of carrageenan, and it exhibits excellent potassium storage capacity (449 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), superior rate performance (233 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1) and long-term stability (97.3% capacity retention after 1000 cycles), due to the high sulfur doping (16.48 wt%) and the coexistence of ordered and disordered regions in the structure. Ex situ characterization, GITT and theoretical calculations reveal that the promotion of covalent sulfur can effectively increase the adsorption of K+ and enhance the K+ reaction kinetics. The proposed one-step synthesis strategy demonstrates the precise use of the composition in biomass, enabling large-scale production of high-performance anodes for K+ storage.

Density, Viscosity, and Spectroscopic Nature for the Binary System of Tetraethylene Glycol (1) + Water (2) T = (298.15 to 323.15) K

Liu Ping,Liu Zimin,Zhao Tianxiang,Liu Fei,Liao Quanlan

Densities and viscosities for the binary system of tetraethylene glycol (1) + water (2) at T = (298.15 to 323.15) K were measured as a function of composition under atmospheric pressure. The excess properties, including excess molar volumes ( \(V_{{\text{M}}}^{{\text{E}}}\) ), viscosity deviations (Δ η ), and the excess Gibbs free energy of activation for viscous flow (Δ G * E ) were calculated by using density and viscosity data, respectively. Excess properties indicated that there are hydrogen bonding interactions between tetraethylene glycol and water molecules, which are investigated in detail by FTIR and UV–Vis spectra.

Crown ether and crown ether/K+ complex assisted DOSY NMR: A versatile tool for positional isomers identification in aqueous solution

Hui Ma,Dan Luo,Qi Zhao,Rui Liu,Zhenzhou Zhang,Xianglin Hou,Xiaohuan Sun,Yingxiong Wang

Diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) is a powerful and efficient technique for the analysis of complex mixtures, relying on their differential in self-diffusion coefficient. However, DOSY is often struggled to separate signals pertaining to isomeric species, especially positional isomers. Here, for the first time, we describe the novel design of 18-crown ether-6 (18C6) and 18C6/K + complex as matrixes to discriminate and identify positional isomeric mixtures of phenylenediamine, nitroaniline, phthalic acid, dimethoxybenzoic acid, aminophthalic acid and even amino acids using 1 H DOSY spectrum. The superior performance of 18C6 and 18C6/K + complex as matrix depends on that they can interact with different components with varying binding energy as demonstrated by MMMF calculations and the DFT calculation. The methodology presented here is simple yet efficient. Moreover, the crown ether and crown ether/K + complex provide the dual mode discrimination for both amino and carboxylic substituted positional isomers.

Solid–Liquid Phase Equilibrium of Isophthalonitrile in 16 Solvents from T = 273.15 to 324.75 K and Mixing Properties of Solutions

Kui Wu,Youliang Guan,Zujin Yang,Hongbing Ji

The solid–liquid equilibrium of isophthalonitrile (IPN) in 16 solvents (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, chloroform, cyclohexanone, cyclopentanone, methyl acetate, ethyl formate, 2-pentanone, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, and diethyl ether) was measured by using a static equilibrium method at temperatures T = 273.15–324.75 K under atmospheric pressure. The results demonstrated that the solubility of IPN in these 16 monosolvents increased with increasing temperature. The largest solubility values of IPN were found in cyclopentanone, and the lowest were in isopropanol. The values of solubility in ketones were much larger than those in esters and alcohols. In alcohols, the solubility ranked as methanol > ethanol > n-propanol > isopropanol, and the sequence was identical to that of the solvent polarities. The polarity of the solvent is an important factor influencing the solubility profiles of IPN in alcohols, despite that the conclusion is not supported by other kinds of solvents studied. Moreover, the Apelblat equation, λh equation, Wilson model, and nonrandom two-liquid model were used to correlate the experimental values. The calculated values of four models all provided good fitting results with the experimental data, and the values of root-mean-square deviation and relative average deviation (RAD) were no more than 6.84 × 10–4 and 6.84 × 10–3, respectively. Furthermore, the thermodynamic properties of the mixing process for IPN in selected solvents were calculated, that is, mixing Gibbs energy (ΔmixG), molar enthalpy (ΔmixH), and molar entropy (ΔmixS). The results indicated that the mixing process of IPN was a spontaneous and entropy-driven process. The solid–liquid equilibrium data and solution thermodynamics would be helpful for the synthesis and purification of IPN in the industry.

Solid–Aqueous Phase Equilibria in the Quaternary NaCl + KCl + RbCl + H2O System: Thermodynamic Predictions and Experimental Verifications at 298.15 K

Dandan Gao,Dongdong Li,Bin Hu,Wu Li

A temperature-dependent thermodynamic model was developed for representing the solid–aqueous equilibria in the quaternary NaCl + KCl + RbCl + H2O system based on the previous ones for binary and ternary systems. The solid–liquid equilibria in the quaternary system were first predicted by the developed model and then verified by conducting the experiments at T = 298.15 K by an isothermal equilibrium method with equilibration times of 5 and 160 days, respectively. The predicted univariant curve saturated with NaCl(cr) and (K,Rb)Cl(ss) in the system is in good agreement with our experimental data. Moreover, to verify the reliability of the model for the prediction of solid solution composition that coexisted with NaCl(cr), the XRD quantitative analysis technique based on the inverse Vegard approach is used. The experimentally determined solid solution compositions well support the results predicted by the model, indicating that the model can simultaneously predict the compositions of aqueous solution and solid solution that coexisted with a pure salt, i.e., NaCl(cr), in a system under an equilibrium state. Finally, phase diagrams of the quaternary NaCl + KCl + RbCl + H2O system at a temperature range of 273.15–373.15 K were predicted. These diagrams are useful for the future industrial applications.

An efficient and sulfur resistant K-modified activated carbon for SCR denitrification compared with acid- and Cu-modified activated carbon

Zhicheng Xu,Yuran Li,Junxiang Guo,Jin Xiong,Yuting Lin,Tingyu Zhu

In this work and for the first time, an alkali metal potassium (K) as a promoter was loaded on an activated carbon (AC) to be used for selective catalytic reduction of NO from industrial flue gas. The denitrification activity of K-modified AC samples was investigated and compared with those of acid- and Cu-modified AC samples. The three modifications can enhance the denitrification activity of AC samples. To investigate the enhanced mechanisms of denitrification and SO 2 resistance, various AC samples were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRF, ICP, XRD, N 2 physisorption, H 2 -TPR, XPS, in situ DRIFTS and TPD. For the acid modification, the content of phenolic hydroxyl increases and then promotes the adsorption of NH 3 . For the loading of Cu, the appearance of Cu 2+ /Cu + sites with high catalytic activity promotes NH 3 and NO adsorption and changes the reaction pathway. For the loading of K, the adsorption capacity for NO increases nearly 12 times higher than that on Raw-AC, of which 85.0% is chemical adsorption. Moreover, three kinds of active nitrate species additionally forms, including nitro compounds, monodentate nitrate and nitrous oxide, which promote the denitrification reaction path. AC-Cu has poor sulfur resistance due to the sulfation of Cu, while AC-K show good sulfur resistance due to the enhanced adsorption of NO. The catalytic dissociation activity of N 2 O on AC-K makes the formation and decomposition of N 2 O into a dynamic equilibrium. As a result, AC-K has a high N 2 selectivity , while AC-Cu has poor N 2 selectivity.

Densities and Viscosities for the Ternary System of Decalin + Methylcyclohexane + Cyclopentanol and Corresponding Binaries at T = 293.15 to 343.15 K

Xiaoyi Chen,Shenda Jin,Yitong Dai,Jianzhou Wu,Yongsheng Guo,Qunfang Lei,Wenjun Fang

Densities (ρ) and viscosities (η) for the ternary system of decalin (1) + methylcyclohexane (2) + cyclopentanol (3) and three corresponding binary systems have been measured over the whole composition range at 11 temperature points from 293.15 K to 343.15 K under atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa). The excess molar volumes (VmE) and viscosity deviations (Δη) of binary systems have been calculated and further fitted with the Redlich–Kister equation, while corresponding physical data of the ternary system have been correlated via the Clibuka, Singh, Nagata-Tamura, and Redlich–Kister equations. The VmE values are negative for the binary system of decalin (1) + methylcyclohexane (2) with a minimum when the moles of the two components are similar. For the system of decalin (1) + cyclopentanol (2), the VmE values are always positive with a maximun at about x1 = 0.6. At the same time, a sigmoid curve can be observed for the system of methylcyclohexane (1) + cyclopentanol (2). The minimum and maximum appear around x1 = 0.2 and x1 = 0.9, respectively. The Δη values of the three binary systems are all negative and the absolute values decrease with increase in temperature. For the ternary system, the VmE values are partially negative and the Δη values are negative over the entire concentration range. The nonideal behaviors of the mixtures are discussed in the perspective of intermolecular interaction and structural effect.

Liquid–Liquid Equilibrium for Ternary Systems of N-Methylformamide + Pyrrole/Indole + Alkanes at 298.15 K: Phase Equilibrium Measurement and Correlation

Xingchang Cha,Jun Gao,Yi Zhang,Ziqi Cui,Dongmei Xu,Lianzheng Zhang,Yinglong Wang

For the purpose of separating nitrogen compounds, pyrrole and indole, N-methylformamide (NMF) was selected as the extractive solvent. The liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for {NMF + pyrrole/indole + alkanes} systems were measured at 298.15 K under atmospheric pressure of 101.3 kPa. The triangular diagrams of the above eight systems, {NMF + pyrrole/indole + n-hexane/n-heptane/n-decane/n-dodecane}, were classified as Treybal’s type I. Meanwhile, the nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) and universal quasi-chemical (UNIQUAC) activity coefficient models were applied to correlate the LLE data, and the UNIQUAC model shows better agreement than the NRTL model. In addition, the distribution constant and selectivity factor were calculated on the basis of the experimental data and utilized to investigate the extraction capabilities of NMF for pyrrole and indole.

A Facile Strategy for Non-fluorinated Intrinsic Low-k and Low-loss Dielectric Polymers: Valid Exploitation of Secondary Relaxation Behaviors

Qian Chao,Fan Zhen-Guo,Zheng Wei-Wen,Bei Run-Xin,Zhu Tian-Wen,Liu Si-Wei,Chi Zhen-Guo,Aldred Matthew P.,Chen Xu-Dong,Zhang Yi,Xu Jia-Rui

High-performance low- k and low-loss circuit materials are urgently needed in the field of microelectronics due to the upcoming Fifth-Generation Mobile Communications Technology (5G Technology). Herein, a facile design strategy for non-fluorinated intrinsic low- k and low-loss polyimides is reported by fully considering the secondary relaxation behaviors of the polymer chains. A new amorphous non-fluorinated polymer (TmBPPA) with a k value of 2.23 and a loss tangent lower than 3.94 × 10 −3 at 10 4 Hz has been designed and synthesized, which to the best of our knowledge is the lowest value amongst the non-fluorinated and non-porous polymers reported in literature. Meanwhile, TmBPPA exhibits excellent overall properties, such as excellent thermostability, good mechanical properties, low moisture absorption, and high bonding strength. As high-performance flexible circuit materials, all these characteristics are highly expected to meet the present and future demands for high density, high speed, and high frequency electronic circuit used in 5G wireless networks.
