A novel optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor based on a hetero-core structure (multimode/non-core/multimode) and polydopamine modification is developed for the detection of beta-2-microglobulin (β2-MG) in urine. When β2-MG at different concentrations is captured by the antibody on the optical fiber probe, it leads to different changes in the local refractive index. Based on this SPR effect, the optimal conditions for various sensitive materials were explored and experimental characterization was done accordingly, and finally the proposed optical fiber biosensor was prepared. The β2-MG sensor showed a linear sensitivity of 0.96 nm/lg c and a LOD of 4.22 ng/mL in the range of 0.01-1000 ng/mL. With no need for labeling, this biosensor has rapid response and low cost. In addition, it exhibited excellent specificity and stability. The proposed sensor provides excellent performance with simple fabrication and offers a bioanalytical platform with potential applications for clinical diagnosis of renal function diseases.

Conversion of lignin to valuable chemicals without external hydrogen presents a significative but challengeable endeavor. Herein, an efficient approach has been proposed for the lignin hydrogenolysis with in-situ hydrogen in the presence of Ni nanoparticles nested in layered double oxides (LDOs). 84.4 % conversion of lignin was achieved over 30Ni-Mg 3 Al-LDOs, affording a 21.3 % yield of monomers, and 38.0 % of which was identified as 4-ethylphenol. Catalyst characterizations revealed that this excellent performance of lignin conversion should be ascribed to the highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles, strong interfacial interactions between Ni and LDOs, and suitable basicity of catalysts. Furthermore, the roles of the solvent (1,4-dioxane aqueous solution) and the lignin methoxyl groups as hydrogen resources were distinguished, and the former acted as an initial hydrogen to promote lignin depolymerization, and the latter was responsible for the high yield of 4-ethylphenol. In addition, a plausible reaction pathway for lignin hydrogenolysis has been proposed.

Traumatic oral ulcers, arising from local physicochemical or mechanical stimuli, exhibit considerable discomfort, an extended healing period, and a potential for malignant transformation. Existing etiological treatments mainly include antibacterial therapy and promoting ulcer healing. Nevertheless, antibacterial therapy using antibiotics may cause unexpected side effects and drug resistance. Additionally, commonly used wound-healing drugs, such as growth factors and glucocorticoids, have drawbacks including instability, high cost, and systemic adverse reactions. To address these issues, a magnesium-incorporated photosensitive metal-organic framework (MOF) derivant, denoted as MgO/C, was developed by pyrolysis of Mg-MOF74. The MgO/C was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The established MgO/C showed an excellent photothermal antibacterial performance upon prevalent oral ulcer pathogens under near-infrared light irradiation, featured by antibacterial rates of 97.8 % and 96.5 % against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus , respectively. Moreover, the MgO/C exhibited controlled release of magnesium ions for up to four days and effectively enhanced fibroblast proliferation, migration and adhesion, at an optimal concentration of 200 ppm. A rat traumatic oral ulcer model demonstrated that the MgO/C+NIR group could facilitate ulcer healing in vivo , resulting in an increase of wound healing rate by 23.4 %, in comparison to the control on day 3. Our study revealed that MgO/C had great potential for the treatment of traumatic oral ulcers.

Nanofiltration membranes with high selectivity and long-term stability for magnesium and lithium ions are crucial to efficiently enriching lithium resources in salt lake brines. Herein, a nano-gradient-structured nanofiltration membrane was fabricated, in which PEI with different molecular weights and TMC were utilized in a gradient interfacial polymerization process to construct the target active layer. Via this facile strategy, the grafting density of PEI and the amino group introduced were properly adjusted, and the pore size distribution and surface charge of the active layer were optimized. The fabricated active layer simultaneously possesses sub-nanometer pore size with a modified gradient structure and high interfacial positive charges, which can accurately screen lithium and magnesium. The successful grafting of secondary PEI and the high positive charge and continuity of the active layer have been demonstrated. After 150 hour operation (Mg/Li ratio of 50), PEI-70000/PA/PES nanofiltration membrane achieved a lithium‑magnesium separation factor (S Li/Mg ) as high as 150 while maintaining the stable permeation flux of approximately 20 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·MPa −1 , and the terminal Mg/Li ratio on the permeable side falls to 0.32, which exhibits significant potential for extracting Li from salt lake brines with high Mg/Li ratio with promising long-term stability.

In the field of construction, structural supercapacitors (SSCs) have been widely noticed due to their simultaneous functions of load-bearing and energy storage. Unfortunately, the currently available electrodes for SSCs are still aimed at application scenarios such as electronics and electric vehicles, and while their performance is good, they are not applicable to the construction sector, which is massive in scale and extremely cost-sensitive industry. Herein, after trade-off between cost and electrochemical performance, a novel low-cost 3D nanomaterial was designed through a facile approach aimed at increasing the areal energy density of SSCs. By growing Mg-Co double hydroxide nanomaterials directly on nickel foam, we achieved a large areal capacitance of 2577 mF/cm 2 at 5 mA/cm 2 (1136.7 F/g at 2.2 A/g). It also exhibits good cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 82.4 % after 10,000 cycles. In addition, SSCs using magnesium-cobalt double hydroxides achieves a high energy density of 285.6 μWh/cm 3 at a power density of 6.31 mW/cm 3 , which is superior to previously reported structural devices. This demonstrates that Mg-Co double hydroxide electrode has good suitability with SSCs and effectively improves the areal energy density of SSCs. Our proposed method also provides a faster and more reliable pathway for low-cost electrode preparation in SSCs, which may lead to the development of a new generation of SSCs.

Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (5-HMF) into carbon-increased hydrocarbons as drop-in energy-rich biofuels has received a great deal of concern for the development of sustainable chemical industry. Here, we demonstrate a one-pot conversion of 5-HMF into C 9 -alkanes on one single catalyst, acidic–basic layered double oxides (Mg(Al)(Zr)O) supported CuCo alloy. The well-defined multifunctional catalytic sites with harmonious combination carry out cascade catalysis, affording C 9 -alkanes (including 30% of more value-added branched-cycloalkanes) in 83% yield. The basic–acidic sites on Mg(Al)(Zr)O show high activity for aldol condensation of 5-HMF and acetone, producing 4-[5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furanyl]-3-buten-2-one (HAc) in a yield of >99%. The engineered Co–Cu–Co linkages on supported CuCo perform efficient hydrodeoxygenation, affording C 9 -alkanes in a selectivity of 96% from HAc. C 9 -cycloalkanes are generated from the cyclization of the corresponding monohydric alcohol intermediates by the synergy of acidic and CuCo sites in the hydrodeoxygenation reaction.

Long-term corrosion profile of molybdenum was studied in three different simulated body fluids up to 28 days, compared with magnesium, zinc, and iron from the perspective of biodegradable metals (bio-metals). Their corrosion rate, mode, products and surface characteristics were comprehensively fathomed. Strikingly, Mo showed progressively advantageous long-term corrosion behavior with the smallest corrosion rate, and most importantly, more uniform mode, as compared with the other three bio-metals. It also performed bilaterally under the simulated inflammatory and bovine serum protein added conditions, with different corrosion progressions. These findings provide an optimistic outlook in opting molybdenum as a new type of bio-metal.

Four different morphologies of TiO 2 were successfully synthesized and the morphological dependence of the catalytic performance was investigated for monitoring of n -hexane. TiO 2 nanotubes showed the best catalytic performance for the cataluminescence (CTL) reaction of n -hexane because of their high specific surface area and ordered arrangement. To further enhance catalytic activity, a TiO 2 nanotube@Mg-MOF-74 composite was synthesized, which was used to construct a CTL sensor for rapid detection of n -hexane rapidly; the introduction of Mg-MOF-74 improved the adsorption capacity and selectivity. A CTL sensor was constructed based on TiO 2 nanotube@Mg-MOF-74 for the rapid detection of n -hexane, Under the optimal conditions there was a good linear relationship between CTL signal intensity and the concentration of n -hexane in the range 0.20–200.0 mg/L. The detection limit (LOD, S/N = 3) was 0.08 mg/L. The RSD values for 11 consecutive measurements using the same sensor and 7 different sensors were 2.8% ( n = 11) and 3.5% ( n = 7), respectively, demonstrating good repeatability and reproducibility. Finally, the sensor was used to detect n -hexane in air samples from different workplaces, with recoveries ranging from 90.2 to 106.4%, showing good accuracy. Thus, the developed CTL sensor could be used for rapid detection of n -hexane in air, avoiding damage to health caused by excessive inhalation. Graphical abstract

This study investigates the synthesis, characterization and adsorption efficiency of PDMS@Li/ZnAl-LDH as a potential adsorbent for lithium recovery from Salt Lake brine with a high Mg/Li ratio. Synthesized via co-precipitation, the adsorbent exhibited excellent stability across a wide range of pH and temperature, along with a well-defined layered crystalline structure. The maximum adsorption capacity of Li + is 14.1 mg/g in lithium brine and 9.4 mg/g in the Qarhan Salt Lake's brine with impressive selectivity, as indicated by separation factors of 215, 838 and 175 for Li + /K + , Li + /Na + and Li + /Mg 2+ , respectively. Microspheres formed by Li/ZnAl-LDH in ultra-pure water exhibited tunable pore size and porosity as compared to Li/Al-LDH, which enhanced the Li + adsorption. Cyclic adsorption and zinc dissolution tests confirmed the adsorbent's excellent reusability with no significant structural degradation. Furthermore, using NaAlO 2 as a precursor reduces cost, making Li/ZnAl-LDH a viable option for large-scale lithium recovery. This work presents a sustainable, cost-effective strategy for lithium recovery with potential industrial applications.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (PVDF-CTFE) is considered an ideal membrane material for the treatment of complex environmental water due to its exceptional thermal stability and chemical resistance. Thus, to expand its application in the field of nanofiltration (NF) membranes, in this study, N-methylglucamine (N-MG) was used to hydrophilically modify PVDF-CTFE, overcoming the inherent hydrophobicity of PVDF-CTFE as a porous substrate membrane, which leads to difficulties in controlling the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction and instability of the separation layer structure. The –OH present in N-MG could replace the C–Cl bond in the CTFE chain segment, thus enabling the hydrophilic graft modification of PVDF-CTFE. The influence of the addition of N-MG on the surface and pore structure, wettability, permeability, ultrafiltration separation, and mechanical properties of the PVDF-CTFE substrate membrane was studied. According to the comparison of the comprehensive capabilities of the prepared porous membranes, the M4 membrane with the addition of 1.5 wt% N-MG exhibited the best hydrophilicity and permeability, indicating that it is a desirable modified membrane for use as an NF substrate membrane. The experiments showed that the rejection of Na2SO4 by the NF membrane was 96.5% and greater than 94.0% for various dyes. In the test using dye/salt mixed solution, this membrane exhibited a good separation selectivity (CR/NaCl = 177.8) and long-term operational stability.

Contrary to the traditional strengthening route by adding multiple & high-dosage alloying elements, we here explored extremely compositional and phase-constituent “simplification” in rare earth (RE) containing biodegradable magnesium alloys for better biocompatibility. An ultra-lean Mg-0.1Pr alloy with a multiscale microstructure has been developed through casting and extrusion, which showed well-balanced performances that match the commercial Mg-based orthopedic products. Compared to the first clinically approved WE43 magnesium alloy, the complex RE addition (7 wt.%) in WE43 is simplified into one single RE (0.1 wt.%) with its content having a 70-fold reduction in the newly developed alloy, while without impairing mechanical properties (tensile strength: 285.6 MPa). This also leads to a mild degradation rate, a good cell & tissue compatibility and osteogenic capacity both in vitro and in vivo . The simplified Mg-0.1Pr alloy exhibits excellent local and systemic biocompatibility in the femoral condyle of rats during a 16-month long-term follow-up, with this period approximately covering the entire life cycle of the implant. In addition, the Mg-0.1Pr alloy exhibits a significantly lowered RE transfer and accumulation in rats compared to other Mg-RE alloys, which possibly alleviates the RE metabolic burden to main organs. Pr is neither accumulated in the corrosion product layer nor in the surrounding bones. This work provides a new solution to maintain the high performance of Mg-RE alloys with extremely compositional “plainification”, which should further benefit for the safety and reliability of RE-strengthened biodegradable metals in the long-term.

Compared to conventional organic electrolytes, aqueous magnesium-ion batteries (AMIBs) have emerged as a research hotspot due to their superior safety, environmental compatibility, and cost-effectiveness. However, the further development of AMIBs has been impeded by their short cycling lifespan, primarily caused by the aqueous corrosion of Mg anodes in water-containing electrolytes, which generates inorganic passivation layers (e.g., Mg(OH)2 and MgO) on the anode surface. To address this challenge, we propose a collaborative two-pronged approach, involving the adoption of a novel electrolyte system (saturated MgCl2 aqueous solution containing 25 vol % PEG, SMP-3) and the use of a Mg alloy anode. Electrochemical investigations suggest that the PEG molecules form hydrogen bonds with H2O molecules, effectively suppressing water activity and thereby enhancing anode stability. The assembled PTO/Mg alloy full cell exhibited a stable discharge plateau at 1.5 V with an initial discharge capacity of 176.24 mAh g–1 at 200 mA g–1. Remarkably, the cell demonstrated exceptional cycling stability, maintaining a capacity of 150 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles (85% capacity retention), with an average Coulombic efficiency approaching 100%. The results demonstrate the feasibility of stabilizing Mg alloy anodes through an interfacial engineering strategy based on a water-in-salt electrolyte design. This strategic approach provides a novel pathway for developing low-cost, high-performance AMIBs.
