The preparation of high-efficiency, stable and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is always a challenge for new energy systems. In this work, a simple hydrothermal synthesis method was used to obtain FeMn bimetallic organic materials (FeMn-MOF/NF) grown on foamed nickel (NF) in one step. Moreover, FeMn-MOF/NF(1:1) had larger electrochemical specific surface area and unique nano-flower-like structure. The overpotentials of OER and HER in alkaline solution at a current density of 50 mA·cm −2 were 290 mV and 260 mV, respectively, and the total water splitting potential at this current density is only 1.7 V. The excellent activity and stability were attributed to the synergistic effect of FeMn. The bimetal and abundant active sites could promote the release of oxygen during the catalytic process.

Hierarchical porous composite Mg-MOF-74/MCFs were successfully synthesized using a simple and facile method under in situ solvothermal conditions. Textural structures and morphologies of the composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results demonstrate that a large amount of nanosized Mg-MOF-74 particles is incorporated into the pores of mesocellular siliceous foams (MCFs) without remarkable aggregation and the composites possess microporous and mesoporous characteristics of both components. In addition, CO2 adsorption properties of the composites were tested in a fixed bed with/without hydrothermal treatment. The total CO2 adsorption capacities were calculated by breakthrough curves. The CO2 adsorption capacity of the composites reaches 1.68 mmol/g, which is smaller than that of pristine Mg-MOF-74. However, the total CO2 adsorption capacity of the composites after hydrothermal treatment reaches 2.66 mmol/g, which is larger than that of Mg-MOF-74 (2.39 mmol/g) under the same condition. XRD patterns and SEM images of the composites demonstrate that the hydrothermal stability and CO2 adsorption performance of the composites were improved compared with those of pristine Mg-MOF-74 after hydrothermal treatment.

Trimethylamine (TMA) sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have drawn great attention for real-time seafood quality evaluation. However, poor selectivity and baseline drift limit the practical applications of MOS TMA sensors. Engineering core@shell heterojunction structures with accumulation and depletion layers formed at the interface is regarded as an appealing way for enhanced gas sensing performances. Herein, we design porous hollow Co3O4@ZnO cages via a facile ZIF-67@ZIF-8-derived approach for TMA sensors. These sensors demonstrate great TMA resistive sensing performance (linear response at moderate TMA concentrations (<33 ppm)), and a high sensitivity of ∼41 is observed when exposed to 33 ppm TMA, with a response/recovery time of only 3/2 s. This superior performance benefits from the Co3O4@ZnO porous hollow structure with maximum heterojunctions and high surface area. Furthermore, great capacitive TMA sensing with linear sensitivity over the full testing concentration range (0.33–66 ppm) and better baseline stability were investigated. A possible capacitive sensing mechanism of TMA polarization was proposed. For practical usage, a portable sensing prototype based on the Co3O4@ZnO sensor was fabricated, and its satisfactory sensing behavior further confirms the potential for real-time TMA detection.

Dyes detection remains a serious task because of their high toxicity. In present work, designed Eu 3+ functionalized Zr-metal-organic framework (Eu 3+ @Zr-MOF-808) as fluorescent probe was constructed via post-synthetic modification (PSM) for rapid monitoring four most commonly used dyes (malachite green (MG), brilliant green (BG), alizarin red S (ARS), indigo red (IDR)). Systematic exploring on the sensing mechanism reveals that fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) for BG, MG and IDR and inner filter effect (IFE) for ARS contribute to the realization of the fluorescence quenching process. It exhibits excellent sensing performances with low limit of detection (LOD) of 32, 58, 77 and 133 nM for BG, IDR, MG and ARS, respectively. The as-constructed Eu 3+ @Zr-MOF-808 was demonstrated to be a highly sensitive probe for screening of MG in fish pond and IDR in printing wastewater with satisfying results. Moreover, a portable test reagent bottle has been developed for visual on-site screening of sample containing dyes with naked eyes under UV light. This is the first attempt to construct the Eu 3+ @Zr-MOF-808 probe for sensing multiple dyes in real samples and demonstrates promising applications in water quality monitoring.

The engineering of highly efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts for catalytic conversion of CO 2 to high value-added products is highly desirable but presents a great challenge. Herein, we reported the synthesis of a series of multifunctional IL@H-Zn/Co-ZIF composite catalysts with a unique porous hollow capsule structure and encapsulated amino-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs). The unique hollow capsule structure of IL@H-Zn/Co-ZIF provides sufficient space for loading active ILs ([C 2 NH 2 Mim + ][Br − ]) and fast mass transfer of substrate molecules during catalysis. Furthermore, the microporous Zn-ZIF shell can effectively avoid the leaching of active ILs. Benefiting from the unique hollow structure, the resultant IL@H-Zn/Co-ZIF demonstrated excellent catalytic performance (>95% yield), and good recyclability (still remained about 90% activities after 5 cycles) when applied in the CO 2 cycloaddition reaction under solvent and co-catalyst free conditions.

For the first time, ZnO dispersed in an N-doped carbon matrix (ZnO/NCs) was derived from the controlled thermal treatment of Zn-DABCO and utilized as a robust heterogeneous catalyst for the polymerization of ε-caprolactone. The as-prepared ZnO/NCs catalysts were characterized using TEM, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, XRD, TPD and N 2 adsorption. The catalyst displayed excellent activity towards the ε-caprolactone polymerization reaction, following the trend, Zn/NC-1000 < Zn/NC-800 < Zn/NC-600. The polymerization was catalyzed co-operatively by both acid and basic sites present in the ZnO/NCs, leading to high molecular weight cyclic polycaprolactone (c-PCL). Furthermore, the catalyst retained its stability and activity after being used for seven cycles without showing any significant loss in performance.

To improve the photocatalytic efficiency of the N2 reduction reaction, MXene quantum dots (Ti3C2-QDs) and two-dimensional (2D) nickel metal–organic framework (Ni-MOF) with different ratios were fabricated by a simple self-assembly strategy to form type II heterojunctions. The resultant composites showed enhanced absorption and excellent interfacial charge-transfer capabilities according to the optical and photoelectron properties. The optimal Ti3C2-QD/Ni-MOF heterostructure exhibited a considerable ammonia yield rate (88.79 μmol gcat–1 h–1). By means of X-ray absorption near-edge fine structure (XANES) technique, it was found that the interaction of Ti3C2-QD and Ni-MOF could accelerate the electron transfer, and Ni site would be the main area to enrich the electron density as well as adsorb and activate N2. Finally, with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), the reaction pathway and intermediate products were studied.

To enhance the performance of the polyphenylene sulfone (PPSU) membrane, a novel mixed matrix membrane with hydrophilicity and antifouling properties was prepared. Using PPSU as the basic membrane material, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as the porogen, N -Methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) as the solvent, and MOF-CAU-1 (Al 4 (OH) 2 (OCH 3 ) 4 (H 2 N-BDC) 3 · x H 2 O) as the filler, PPSU/CAU-1 mixed matrix membrane (MMM) was prepared by an immersion precipitation and phase transformation technique. By changing the amount of MOF-CAU-1, the properties and performance of the MMM membrane were investigated in terms of hydrophilicity, pore morphology, surface roughness, and dye removal. The results show that the highest pure water flux of the mixed reached 47.9 L·m −2 ·h −1 , when the CAU-1 addition amount was 1.0 wt%, which was 23% higher than that of the pure PPSU membrane. Both the rejection rate and the antifouling performance of the MMM membrane also noticeably improved.

Densely populated metal atomic site catalysts play a key role in practical catalysis applications. Herein, we report an amorphous nanobox with high-density atomic platinum species which are uniformly dispersed into the ZIF-8 skeleton through cation exchange. During the dispersing process, the ZIF-8 core was gradually etched into the hollow structure though the Kirkendall effect, and a great amount substitutions of Pt with Zn breaks the initial long-range ordered ZIF-8 topology into a distorted skeleton which leads to the significantly unsaturated coordination of atomic Pt species. The high-density atomic Pt nanoboxes exhibit excellent performance in direct C–H bond borylation of arenes which are usually catalyzed by homogeneous complexes. Such high-density atomic site heterogeneous catalysts could serve as a bridge to convert from homogeneous to heterogeneous catalysis.

The instability of graphene oxide (GO) membranes in aqueous solutions restricts their application in wastewater treatment through the membrane separation technology. In this work, a nanocomposite membrane (Sm-MOF/GO) composed of samarium metal–organic frameworks (Sm-MOFs) and GO nanosheets was successfully fabricated via the filtration of the corresponding Sm-MOF/GO dispersions. The in situ growth of Sm-MOF with aqueous stability on the GO sheets prevented the adjacent GO layers from expanding in aqueous solutions, thus endowing the prepared Sm-MOF/GO membrane with a stable membrane skeleton structure. Besides, the successful loading of Sm-MOF enlarged the layer space of the composite membrane, which was beneficial for higher permeance. The optimization of the Sm-MOF loading contents was also investigated to prepare M-X (where X represents the mass ratio of the MOF raw material to the total mass of the reactants). Subsequently, the fabricated M-0.31 possessed a high permeance of 26 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, which was 3 times higher than that of a pure GO membrane; moreover, high rejections (>91%) to rhodamine B and methylene blue were obtained. After continuous 5.5 h filtration, the excellent rejection was still maintained as expected, indicating the long-term stability of M-0.31.

Magnetic microrobots have potential applications in various fields of biomedicine, such as minimally invasive surgery, targeted diagnosis, and treatment. In this work, the crystalline properties of ZnO on two-dimensional (2D) magnetic microrobot precursors were tuned by annealing at different temperatures. On this basis, zeolite-imidazole framework 8 (ZIF-8) was then synthesized on the precursor surface. Through conventional characterization studies, the results showed that the precursor tuned by annealing treatment (from 350 to 500 °C) could be used for the synthesis of ZIF-8 on microrobots with specific two-dimensional structures, thus becoming metal–organic framework (MOF)-based microrobot. Also, the optimal temperature was around 410 °C, which contributed to surface roughening of the precursor and provided more reaction sites for the growth of cubic ZIF-8 particles. The MOF-based 2D microrobots were tested for their locomotive capabilities using a three-dimensional (3D) Helmholtz coil system and were able to reach a maximum forward swimming speed of 107 μm/s under a 12 Hz rotating magnetic field of 4 mT. The steerability of the microrobots was validated through successful navigation inside a microfluidic channel. The high drug loading efficiency of the MOF-based microrobots was validated using a drug loading test. In summary, MOF-based microrobots have high drug loading capacity and strong locomotive capabilities, which suggest a strong potential for in vivo biomedical applications in hard-to-reach areas of the human body.

Binary transition metal oxides exhibit improved properties including good redox potentials and electrical conductivities compared with single metal oxides as electrode materials in energy storage. Herein, ZIF-67 is prepared by a one-step method using Co2+ as the central metal ion, 2-methylimidazole as the organic ligand, and methanol as an organic solvent at room temperature. Hollow NiCo2O4 and sheet-like Co3O4/NiCo2O4 derived from bimetallic imidazolate framework precursors were synthesized by adding cobalt and nickel ions in appropriate proportions. A hollow and porous structure is achieved for the reaction between a nickel salt and ZIF-67, and this unique nanostructure provides a high active surface area, which is beneficial to the electrochemical properties. Several samples are prepared and used as electrode materials for electrochemical tests in 6 M KOH. As a result, the Co3O4/NiCo2O4 electrode with a sheet nanostructure showed a high specific capacitance of 846 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1. This Co3O4/NiCo2O4 electrode material is promising for future studies on high-performance supercapacitors to solve emerging energy-related problems.
