Developing impressive and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key for large-scale application of hydrogen production . Herein, a series of non-noble Ni-Mo-P coatings were achieved in the ChCl-EG electrolyte through a facile electrodeposition method under different experimental conditions. The 0.6Ni-0.21Mo-0.066 P coating fabricated at 30 mAcm −2 exhibits an impressive HER catalytic activity for delivering a current density of 10 mAcm −2 at only an overpotential of 57 mV in 1 M KOH electrolyte, ascribing to the synergistic effect of Ni, Mo and P elements and regulated electron structures, as well as large electrochemical active areas produced in the ChCl-EG electrolyte. Moreover, the 0.6Ni-0.21Mo-0.066 P coating demonstrates a pronounced electrocatalytic stability toward HER in the long-term test due to its obviously small inners tress. The outstanding HER performance of 0.6Ni-0.21Mo-0.066 P coating, along with facile and scalable fabrication method, highlights the potential application in the field of electrocatalytic water splitting.

Constructing low-cost, high-active and robust heterogeneous hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts with strong metal–metal oxide-support interaction (SMMOSI) is still an urgent challenge for the development of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), especially under high current density (e.g., 1 A cm −2 ). Herein, a hierarchical composite of heterogenous Ni 4 Mo/NiMoO 4 (NiMoO x ) nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on a mesoporous carbon CMK-3 (NiMoO x @CMK-3) is designed as a superior electrocatalyst for HER. Significantly, the strong interaction between heterogeneous NiMoO x NPs and CMK-3 supporting matrix effectively stabilize the catalytic active Ni 4 Mo/NiMoO 4 heterostructure by altering the local geometric and electronic structures, leading to maximumly exposure of active sites and promoted electron transfer ability. The optimized electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding HER activity with an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope of 7 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 27.7 mV dec -1 , respectively, and can steadily operate at 100 mA cm −2 for 800 h. More significantly, owing to these HER merits, the AEMWE configuration with NiMoO x @CMK-3 (−) is also designed, resulting in low cell voltage of 1.965 V@1 A cm −2 and negligible degradation over 400 h@1 A cm −2 . Further ex/in-situ electrochemical spectra evidence that both the partial combined MoO 4 2- from NiMoO 4 and the newly formed MoO 4 2- originating from dissolved Mo in NiMoO x @CMK-3 could boost the fast generation of polymerized Mo 2 O 7 2- that could effectively accelerate the HER process in alkaline conditions by facilitating the formation of active Mo-H* intermediates. Moreover, theoretical calculation results demonstrate the upshifting of d-band center of Mo toward Fermi level for the heterogeneous NiMoO x and the strong charge distribution between the heterointerface could optimize adsorption free energies of H* (ΔG H* ) on the surface of Mo atoms.

One of the most critical challenges in the field of hydrogen production through water electrolysis technique is the design, development and manufacture of electrode materials with low-cost, highly electrocatalytic activity and stability. We employ the galvanostatic deposition technique to prepare the honeycomb structured Co−Ni−Mo alloy electrocatalysts from ethylene glycol (EG) system, in which the honeycomb structure presents highly intrinsic electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochemical behavior of Co 2+ , Ni 2+ and Mo 6+ reductions and the co-deposition behavior of Co-Ni, Co-Mo, Ni-Mo and Co-Ni-Mo alloys is reported. Benefiting from the composition engineering by alloying with Mo atoms, as well as the simultaneous existence of a suitable honeycomb structure, these Co 58 Ni 23 Mo 19 deposits obtained at an optimal parameter exhibit prominent electrocatalytic durability and activity with a η 10 of 51 mV for HER in a 1.0 M KOH. More importantly, the formation model of the honeycomb structured Co-Ni-Mo alloy deposits is proposed. This work suggests a simple and economical method for the preparation of a 3-dimensional catalytic electrode.

Graphical Metal–organic assemblies for electrodes : A new metal–organic coordination strategy tuned by a surfactant is presented for the design of Mo-based hybrid materials ranging from 2D nanopetals to 3D microflowers. The new lithium-ion battery (LIB) of Ni-MoO 2 /N-C|LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 with high rate features above 8 C is introduced. This strategy is applicable for greater capabilities, and the high-rate LIB can meet the requirements of fast-charging energy storage devices. Multi-dimensional metal oxides have attracted great attention in diverse applications due to their intriguing performances. However, their structural design remains challenging, particularly that based on organic chelation chemistry. Although metal–organic complexes with different architectures have been reported, their structure formation mechanisms are not well understood because of the complex chelation processes. Herein, we introduce a new metal–organic coordination strategy to construct metal-decorated (Ni, Co, Mn) Mo-based complexes ranging from 2D nanopetals to 3D microflowers. The chelating process of the metal–organic complex can be tuned by a surfactant, giving rise to different structures, and then a further metal can be appended. Thus, different metal (oxide)-decorated MoO 2 /C-N structures were designed, enabling an extremely high lithium storage capability of 1018 mA h g −1 and rate capacities of up to 10 A g −1 over 1000 cycles. Relationships between electrochemical behavior and structure have been analyzed kinetically. A high-rate lithium-ion battery has been assembled from Ni-MoO 2 /C-N and an Ni-rich layered oxide as the anode and cathode, respectively. We believe that this general metal–organic coordination strategy should be applicable to other multi-functional materials with superior capabilities.

Hierarchical nanosheet-based nanotubes are very attractive because their unique structure endows them with large surface areas and exposes massive active sites for functional applications. We herein demonstrate a facile one-pot hydrothermal approach to fabricate the hierarchical nanosheet-based MS2 (M = Re, Mo, W) nanotubes by using Te nanowires as sacrificial templates. The hierarchical nanotubes show tube channels of ∼30 nm and hierarchical channel walls with a tunable thickness of up to ∼50 nm. As exemplified for application in Li-ion and Na-ion batteries, the ReS2 hierarchical nanotubes exhibit excellent specific capacities (1137 mA h g–1 for Li-ion batteries and 375 mA h g–1 for Na-ion batteries at 0.1 A g–1 after 100 cycles), good cycling stabilities, and high rate capabilities, demonstrating their promising applicability in rechargeable batteries. This work may open up new opportunities for further exploration of new types of hierarchical nanostructures for applications, e.g., in catalysis, energy chemistry, and gas adsorption and separation.

New conceptions of developing various nanostructure materials supported on conductive substrates are urgently required for additive-free integrated electrodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, Mo-doped SnS2-based nanosheets were directly grown on a conductive substrate, carbon cloth, via a facile hydrothermal method. Significantly, the as-synthesized samples possess a three-dimensional network structure consisting of interconnected nanosheets, which can be directly employed as additive-free integrated electrodes for LIBs. The as-obtained CC@Sn0.9Mo0.1S2 nanosheets exhibit initial high discharge and charge capacities of 2033.6 and 1869.8 mA h g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, with a coulombic efficiency of 91.9%. A high reversible discharge capacity of 1950.8 mA h g−1 is obtained after 200 cycles. Moreover, a high reversible capacity of 914.5 mA h g−1 is achieved even at a high current density of 5 A g−1, which significantly exceeds the theoretical capacity of commercial graphite and reversible capacity of SnS2. A full lithium ion battery was assembled composed of the CC@Sn0.9Mo0.1S2 anode and a commercial LiCoO2 cathode, which also delivered high capacity and cycling stability. The excellent electrochemical lithium storage performance of Mo-doped SnS2 could be attributed to the molybdenum doping, which limited the number of layers of the nanosheets, enlarged the interlayer spacing and generated rich defects.

Up to now, studies on solid-state Z-scheme two-component heterojunctions have hardly referred to roles of interfacial internal electric fields (IEFs). Herein, solid-state Z-scheme Bi 2 MoO 6 /MO (M = Cu, Co 3/4 , or Ni) heterojunction photocatalysts were simply synthesized, for the first time, with enhanced photocatalytic performance toward organic degradation. Electron microscopy images reveal that the MO homogeneously distributes on surfaces of the Bi 2 MoO 6 hierarchical microspheres, and they close contact with distinct heterojunction interfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) suggest that the electron transfer occurs between the Bi 2 MoO 6 and MO after they contact, resulting in formation of IEFs at their interfaces. Based on band gap values and valance-band XPS and ultraviolet photoelectron spectra, energy band levels of the Bi 2 MoO 6 and MO are defined, and directions of the interfacial IEFs are determined. The IEFs play key roles for the formation of the Z-scheme Bi 2 MoO 6 /MO heterojunctions and for the photoactivity enhancement. This work provides a better insight into the formation mechanism of solid-state two-component Z-scheme heterojunctions and a significant experimental guidance for studying other similar systems.

Three-dimensional flower-like Ce–Mo micro/nano composite oxides with different Ce/Mo atomic ratios (f-Ce10-xMoxOδ) were synthesized as effective bifunctional catalysts for one-pot conversion of fructose to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) via dehydration and aerobic oxidation. The catalytic activities of f-Ce10-xMoxOδ depended on their structure and physicochemical properties, which were closely related to their elementary compositions. The f-Ce9Mo1Oδ, which possesses polymeric octahedral MoOz species, the highest Oα ratio, BET surface area, and acidity density, exhibited the highest catalytic activity for DFF production. High DFF yields of 94% and 74% were obtained from f-Ce9Mo1Oδ catalyzed HMF oxidation and “one-pot” fructose conversion, respectively. Furthermore, f-Ce9Mo1Oδ is easily prepared, has low cost, and is ecofriendly, which has potential application in industrial production of DFF from fructose.

Critical barriers to the extensive applications of the spinel LiMn 2 O 4 cathodes include grievous capacity degradation and structural collapse. Bulk elemental doping combining surface modification, which is a common approach to address these challenges. Here, synchronous bulk Mo-doped and in-situ surface reconstructed layer coated LiMo 0.02 Mn 1.98 O 4 cathodes are prepared by tuning the annealing temperatures. Using the spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscopy (Cs-STEM) technique, we demonstrate that part of Mo 6+ ions dopes into the octahedral Mn 16d sites to form LiMo 0.02 Mn 1.98 O 4 that strengthens bulk structural stability. The other part of Mo 6+ ions or the Mn atom occupying the Mn 16c sites of the spinel to form a surface reconstructed layer on the outermost surface that suppresses the side reaction and slows down the decomposition of the electrolyte. Specifically, the LiMo 0.02 Mn 1.98 O 4 cathode calcined at 750 °C with an appropriate surface reconstructed layer exhibits an outstanding capacity retention of 76.28 % after 1000 cycles at 10C at 25 °C. Our work provides a simple and novel way toward high electrochemical performance tuning for spinel LiMn 2 O 4 cathodes.

Coatings play a crucial role in minimizing eddy current loss in soft magnetic composites (SMCs). The powder atomic layer deposition (PALD) technique was utilized to coat Fe–Ni–Mo soft magnetic powder in this study. The Al 2 O 3 coating fabricated via PALD enhanced corrosion resistance and reduced core loss in SMCs. Additional deposition cycles increased the resistivity of the Fe–Ni–Mo powder and the corrosion resistance of the Fe–Ni–Mo SMCs, indicating that the density and integrity of the amorphous Al 2 O 3 coating were enhanced. Thinner coatings (20 cycles) exhibited anodic passivation in corrosion, which was attributed to insufficient density. Nevertheless, an excessively thick coating (100 cycles) resulted in a decrease in effective permeability and an increase in hysteresis loss. The fabricated Fe–Ni–Mo SMCs (50 cycles) demonstrated a core loss of 603.1 mW/cm 3 at 100 kHz/100 mT, coupled with an effective permeability of 108.5 and a Q value of 97.8 at 100 kHz.

Allyl alcohol, an industrially valuable intermediate in organic synthesis, is conventionally produced through selective hydrogenation of acrolein and hydrolysis of chloropropene. However, these processes currently face challenges due to the unsustainability of fossil feedstocks. A more sustainable production of allyl alcohol from renewable feedstock (i.e., glycerol) has been demonstrated through gas-phase catalytic reaction over metal oxide catalysts with and without external H2. Improved understanding of the reaction mechanism of glycerol to allyl alcohol conversion is an important effort to rationally design more efficient catalysts. In this work, we investigate gas-phase conversion of glycerol to allyl alcohol through consecutive dehydration and hydrogen transfer reactions over Mo–V oxides supported on acid-modified montmorillonite (HMMT). The use of HMMT as a support enables the well dispersion of metal oxide particles with nominal loadings up to 5 wt % on the catalyst surface while the acidic sites facilitate dehydration of glycerol to acrolein with ∼74% selectivity. By modulating the nominal total Mo+V loading, Mo–V/HMMT catalyst with a 10 wt % metal loading afforded allyl alcohol in 22% yield at 320 °C and ambient pressure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis of this bifunctional catalyst in the as-prepared and post-catalysis (spent) states showed changes in the surface Mo(VI)═O species and V4+/V5+ redox ratio; the latter was found to decrease due to the involvement of lower valence V4+ species in the hydrogen transfer reaction of acrolein. Meanwhile, the amount of surface Mo(VI)═O species with weak electronic metal–support interaction decreases after the reaction. Catalytic tests using an aqueous acrolein feed solution suggested the role of water as a hydride donor in transfer hydrogenation of this unsaturated aldehyde to allyl alcohol, while the addition of alcohol-containing compounds, such as 2-propanol and 1,2-propanediol leads to lower allyl alcohol selectivity with time on stream. The results presented here could guide the development of improved supported Mo−V oxide catalysts and reaction systems for efficient gas-phase glycerol conversion to allyl alcohol.
