Large-scale production of defect-free MoS2 nanosheets via pyrene-assisted liquid exfoliation

Dali Wang,Fangming Wu,Yiheng Song,Chan Li,Li Zhou

Two dimensional (2D) layered MoS 2 nanosheets are gaining increasing attention due to their attractive properties associated with myriads potential applications. However, large-scale production of high-quality MoS 2 nanosheets in a simple manner remains a big challenge. Herein, we present a facile approach for scalable production of defect-free MoS 2 nanosheets by direct ultrasonication exfoliation of bulk MoS 2 crystals in ethanol in the presence of pyrene. Our findings indicate that the pyrene can not only serve as an exfoliating agent to significantly accelerate the exfoliation process but also endow the resulted MoS 2 nanosheets with excellent solution dispersibility and stability. The obtained MoS 2 nanosheets are highly crystalline and exhibit superior electrical properties as compared with the bulk MoS 2 . In addition, the MoS 2 nanosheets can also be employed as nanofillers to enhance the mechanical properties of polymers. Moreover, this method can also be extended to exfoliation of other 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenide as demonstrated by the exfoliation of bulk WS 2 crystals in this study. This work thus brings more opportunities for the investigation and applications of 2D layered inorganic nanosheets.

Shao Su,Wenfang Cao,Wei Liu,Zaiwei Lu,Dan Zhu,Jie Chao,Lixing Weng,Lihua Wang,Chunhai Fan,Lianhui Wang

The detection of microRNA plays an important role in early cancer diagnosis. Herein, a dual-mode electronic biosensor was developed for microRNA-21 (miRNA-21) detection based on gold nanoparticle-decorated MoS 2 nanosheet (AuNPs@MoS 2 ). A classical DNA “sandwich” structure was employed to construct MoS 2 -based electrochemical sensor , including capture DNA, target miRNA-21 and DNA-modified nanoprobe. [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- and [Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ were selected as electrochemical indicators to monitor the preparation process and evaluate the performance of MoS 2 -based electrochemical biosensor by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), respectively. Such MoS 2 -based biosensor exhibited excellent performance for miRNA-21 detection in the range from 10 fM to 1   nM with detection limit of 0.78   fM and 0.45   fM for DPV and EIS technique, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed MoS 2 -based biosensor displayed high selectivity and stability, which could be used to determine miRNA-21 in human serum samples with satisfactory results. All data suggested that such MoS 2 -based nanocomposite may be a potential candidate for biosensing ranging from nucleic acid to protein detection.

Fabrication of Porous MoS2 with Controllable Morphology and Specific Surface Area for Hydrodeoxygenation

Zhenwi Zhang,Chuanjun Yue,Jianhen Hu

SiO 2 nanoparticles modified with aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) were used as hard templates for preparing porous MoS 2 . The method offers the advantages of simple steps, convenient operation, controllable pore size, and a specific surface area. Two morphologies of MoS 2 were obtained by using thiourea and L-cysteine as sulfur sources, respectively. Porous MoS 2 prepared by using thiourea had a smooth surface, whereas the surface of porous MoS 2 prepared with L-cysteine had many burrs. The MoS 2 nanomaterials with the respective morphologies were used to catalyze the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction. The activity of MoS 2 prepared with L-cysteine was lower than that prepared with thiourea. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses showed that MoS 2 had a large sheet-shaped structure and high crystallinity, leading to high reaction activity and high selectivity for cyclohexane. The reaction temperature also influenced the HDO significantly. The mechanism of hydrogenation of phenol was discussed.

Doxorubicin-Loaded Layered MoS2 Hollow Spheres and Its Photothermo-Chemotherapy on Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Li Shuai,Tan Longfei,Xu Wenhan,Liu Chong,Wu Qiong,Fu Changhui,Meng Xianwei,Shao Haibo

Local recurrence has become the main problem of tumor thermal ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nanotechnology could potentially aid in improving the situation. MoS2 nanomaterials, as ideal photothermal therapy (PTT) agents, have gathered great interest due to their excellent surface plasmon resonance features, high photothermal conversion efficiency, good biocompatibility and low cost. In this work, we synthesized layered MoS2 hollow spheres (LMHSs; diameter ∼300 nm) via the solvent-controlled ultrasonic nebulization method. Compared to LMHSs previously synthesized by our group (approx. 600 nm), the current ones showed better efficacy, as well as enhanced permeability and retention, due to their ideal size. In addition, the LMHSs are developed with both layered and hollow structures, which are extremely suitable for loading anticancer agents. In this study, doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded into the nanoparticles (NPs) using the vacuum negative pressure loading method, and the drug loading capacity was as high as 32.5%. Therefore, the efficacy of cancer cell killing by photothermal ablation was markedly enhanced by DOX released from the LMHSs. As we expected, the as-made DOX@MoS2 NPs exhibited excellent photothermo-chemotherapy effect, both in vitro and in vivo. Tumor cell viability was inhibited up to 73% at the power density of 1.2 W cm–2, and tumors in mice models achieved complete response, with no recurrence. The PTT with DOX@MoS2 NPs had a much better synergistic therapeutic efficacy than each individual treatment, showing great promise for HCC treatment.

Urchin-shaped MoS2–Cd0.8Zn0.2S nanocomposites with greatly enhanced and long-lasting photocatalytic activity

Aili Liu,Pengsheng Ling,Guodong Yu,Huile Jin,Shun Wang,Jichang Wang

A class of urchin-shaped nanocomposites composed of MoS 2 and Cd 0.8 Zn 0.2 S nanoparticles were fabricated in this study, yielding the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 1401 μmol/g/h when they are applied as the photocatalysts of water splitting reaction. The greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity could last over 24 h. Such great improvement in the photocatalytic activity, which is nearly 11 times higher than that of pure CdS and 9 times of Cd 0.7 Zn 0.3 S, and 1.7 times of MoS 2 –CdS, may be attributed to that the one-step synthetic procedure resulted in tighter interfacial contact of the urchin-like MoS 2 –Cd 0.8 Zn 0.2 S composites. Specifically, solvothermal reaction of molybdenum(V) dimethyldithiocarbamate , diethyldithiocarbamato cadmium(II) and zinc di(benzimidazol-2-yl) disulphide took place simultaneously in one-pot. Characterizations with X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) etc. illustrate that a class of novel urchin-shaped nanocomposite composed of MoS 2 and Cd 0.8 Zn 0.2 S nanoparticles were formed in this one-pot synthesis. This study therefore presents a simple and effective route to prepare chalcogenide-based photocatalysts for more efficient production of hydrogen from water.

Dynamic evolution of single-atom Rh site and MoS2 support for hydrogen evolution

Fei-Yang Yu,Hao Sun,Hua-Qiao Tan,Yang-Guang Li,Shuit-Tong Lee,Zhen-Hui Kang

The dynamic evolution and structure-performance relationships of single-atom catalysts (SACs) under operating conditions are one of the most concerned hotspots at present. Here, we employed Anderson-type polyoxometalates as a precursor to prepare the SAC Rh-MoS 2 , which shows excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with a mass activity of 4.26 A mg −1 at 100 mV. Such a result is much better than that of 20% Pt/C. Extensive experimental characterization combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the active site undergoes a dynamic evolution from Rh-S to Rh-S/O, while at the same time, the support is transformed from 1T MoS 2 to 1T-2H MoS 2 . It is this dynamic evolution of the catalyst structure that causes a series of changes in the activity, and eventually, a balance between catalytic activity and stability is achieved. This work offers a good research demonstration of the dynamic evolution of SACs under operating conditions and provides a new perspective on the design of SACs.

Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performance of P-Doped MoS2/rGO Composites for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Wenjun Zhu,Bofeng Zhang,Yao Yang,Minghai Zhao,Yuwen Fang,Yang Cui,Jian Tian

This study is based on the strategies of composite and element doping. Herein, P-MoS 2 /rGO materials were synthesized using a solvent-assisted hydrothermal method. The MoS 2 nanosheets were uniformly and vertically grown on rGO; meanwhile, the optimized structure of MoS 2 was achieved by P doping, resulting in improved catalytic performance and structural stability. Under alkaline conditions, the P-MoS 2 /rGO catalyst exhibits good electrocatalytic activity, demonstrating a Tafel slope of 70.7 mV dec −1 and an overpotential of 172.8 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 . Notably, even after 3000 consecutive LSV tests, the curves still show a high degree of overlap, indicating exceptional stability.

Uniform Yolk–Shell MoS2@Carbon Microsphere Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yunmei Pan,Jiajia Zhang,Hongbin Lu

Graphical A good egg : Highly uniform yolk–shell MoS 2 @C microspheres were synthesized as lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes, with the inner cavity between the carbon shell and MoS 2 core easily tailored through a novel etching technique (see scheme). The rationally designed microsphere anode exhibits high reversible capacity, and excellent cycling stability and rate performance. The etching strategy developed may provide a new approach for the preparation of other carbon-based hollow nanostructures As an electrode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), MoS 2 has attracted much attention because of its high capacity and low cost. However, the rational design of a novel electrode structure with a high capacity, fast charge/discharge rate, and long cycling lifetime remains a great challenge. Herein, a environmentally friendly etching strategy is reported for the construction of monodisperse, inner void-controlled yolk–shell MoS 2 @carbon microspheres. The resulting anode reveals an initial discharge capacity up to 1813 mAh g −1 , a high reversible capacity (1016 mAh g −1 ), excellent cycling stability (200 cycles), and superior rate performance. Such microspheres consist of nanosized MoS 2 yolks (≈280 nm), porous carbon shells (≈25 nm) and well-controlled internal voids in between, opening a new pathway for the optimization of the electrochemical properties of MoS 2 -based anodes without sacrificing their capacity. In addition, this etching strategy offers a new method for the development of functional, hollow MoS 2 -based composites.

Facile construction of MoS2 decorated CdS hybrid heterojunction with enhanced hydrogen generation performance

R. Sridevi,A. Prakasam,P.M. Anbarasan,Rajneesh Kumar,M. Karthik,K. Deepakvijay

Promoting the charge separation to improve photocatalytic performance of semiconductor photocatalysts is very important in the field of artificial photosynthesis. Here, a novel MoS 2 /CdS 2D–2D ultrathin nanosheet heterostructure was fabricated via a one-pot solvothermal route. The obtained 2D–2D MoS 2 /CdS nanojunction has not only provided large contact areas, but also shortened the charge transport distance, resulting in significantly enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution property. The composites that were synthesized were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), Photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analysis. By optimizing the 2D MoS2 amounts in the heterojunction, the 5 wt.% 2D/2D MoS2/CdS heterojunction displayed the maximal photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 4449 μmolh −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation in the presence of lactic acid as the sacrificial reagent, which was 6 times higher than that of pristine 2D CdS. Based on the photoelectrochemical and photoluminescence spectra tests, it could be deduced that the charge separation and transfer of 2D/2D MoS 2 /CdS heterojunction was tremendously improved, and the recombination of photoinduced electron-hole pairs was effectively impeded. Moreover, the 2D MoS2 was used as a cocatalyst to provide the abundant active sites and lower the overpotential for H2 generation reaction. The current work would offer an insight to fabricate the 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts for splitting H2O into H2.

High-efficiency PPy@MoS2 Core-Shell Heterostructure Photocatalysts for enhanced pollutant degradation activity

Yizhou Yang,Longlong Wei,Shengdi Luo,Xudong Yang

To combat the global energy crisis and reduce environmental pollution, nano-semiconductor photocatalysts have become widely used. In this paper, a novel core-shell heterostructure containing polypyrrole@molybdenum disulfide (PPy@MoS 2 ) composites was synthesized using simple oxidative polymerization and hydrothermal methods. The photocatalyst is made of pyrrole as raw material, polyvinyl alcohol as protective agent, and Fe as catalyst. Polypyrrole nanoparticles are synthesized by oxidative polymerization. Then, sodium molybdate as molybdenum source, thiourea as sulfur source, hydroxylamine hydrochloride as reducing agent, and F127 as surfactant are added as template to synthesize PPy@MoS2 with a core-shell structure and an average size of 80 nm through hydrothermal method. The PPy@MoS 2 core-shell heterostructure performs much better than pure PPy or MoS 2 in full visible spectrum. Moreover, the PPy@MoS 2 structure exhibits high photoactivity in degrading methylene blue (MB), reaching a decomposition efficiency of 99.3 %. And after being recycled and reused 5 times, its catalytic effect is still not less than 99.3 %. Besides, the prepared PPy@MoS 2 nanocomposite possesses a high specific surface area and a remarkable heterostructure interface, which easily separates holes and electrons to improve the photodegradation ability. Thus, our proposed heterostructure nanomaterial has the potential to be utilized in a multitude of applications pertaining to the protection of the natural environment, including the treatment of water and the degradation of dyes that may contaminate water sources.

Improving alkaline hydrogen evoluation reaction efficiency through 1T/2H-MoS2/Ni3S2 heterostructure design

Nazeer Sana,Han Jingwei,Qi Junjie

Due to the fact that fossil fuels are limited and the world’s energy demand is rising, economic catalysts with exceptional stability and efficiency must be produced right now. MoS 2 ’s successfully increased catalytic activity by interfacial coupling and phase engineering. The 1T/2H-MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 composite was effectively created in this study by adding Ni 3 S 2 material on top of 1T/2H-MoS 2 (Mo: S = 1:4). The effects of varying concentrations of Ni 3 S 2 on hydrogen evaluation reaction characteristics are examined using the hydrothermal technique. The composite sample with an appropriate amount of Ni 3 S 2 has the best hydrogen evolution performance when compared to samples with other amounts of Ni 3 S 2 . The sample’s overpotential at 1 M KOH is 124 mV at 10 mAcm −2 , and its Tafel slope is 138.0 mVdec −1 . In addition, the sample exhibits good air stability and hydrogen evolution stability. Also, to accelerate the kinetics of hydrogen evolution and encourage H 2 O dissociation in an alkaline environment, Ni 3 S 2 efficiently stimulates MoS 2 ’s inert base surface, creates a rich coupling boundary, and greatly enhances the performance of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Magnetic Fe3O4-C@MoS2 composites coordinated with peroxymonosulfate catalysis for enhanced tetracycline degradation

Yuxue Shan,Yanyan Liu,Li Feng,Shuao Yang,Xiaohong Tan,Zerong Liu

Tetracycline is an organic compound that poses a significant threat to both the ecological environment and human health during its long-term production and use. Advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOP) have been recognized as effective techniques for treating antibiotic contamination. However, The urgent demand for a green, efficient, and recyclable catalyst to effectively facilitate persulfate treatment of tetracycline pollution is evident. Magnetic Fe 3 O 4 -C@MoS 2 composite were synthesized using hydrothermal and pyrolysis methods. Degradation experiments, free radical quenching experiments, EPR analysis were carried out to investigate the degradation performance and mechanisms of Fe 3 O 4 -C@MoS 2 composite. Results showed that the degradation efficiency of 100 mL of 20 mg/L tetracycline solution reached up to 97% within 40 mins with the dosage of 20 mg Fe 3 O 4 -C@MoS 2 and 30.7 mg peroxmonosulfate. Furthermore, this degradation system exhibited excellent efficiency even over a wide pH range of 3–9. The transformation of Mo (IV) and S 2- /S n 2- species valence states facilitated the conversion between Fe(III)/Fe(II). Both free radical ( S O 4 ⋅ − , ⋅ O H and O 2 ⋅ − ) as well as non-free radical species ( O 2 1 ) were found to accelerate the catalytic reaction during the tetracycline degradation. The possible pathways of tetracycline degradation were proposed, and the toxicity of the intermediate products were proved to be lower than that of tetracycline. Finally, magnetic Fe 3 O 4 -C@MoS 2 composites possessed good reusability and stability after 4 cycles of degradation.
