New Insight of Li-Doped Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 Thin Films: Li-Induced Na Diffusion from Soda Lime Glass by a Cation-Exchange Reaction

Yanchun Yang,Lijian Huang,Daocheng Pan

In our recent report (ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces2016, 8, 5308), Li+ ions had been successfully incorporated into the lattice of the selenized Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin film on a quartz substrate by substituting equivalent Cu+ ions, and Li+ ions was also found to have the little effect on the crystal growth and defect passivation. To further improve the cell performance of Li-doped CZTSSe devices, we conducted the same experiments on the sodium-rich soda-lime glass (SLG) substrate in this study, instead of sodium-free quartz substrate. Surprisingly, only trace amounts of Li (Li/Cu molar ratio ∼1 × 10–4) were detected in the final CZTSSe thin films; meanwhile, a large amount of sodium was present on the surface and at the grain boundaries of the selenized thin films. A Li/Na exchange mechanism is used to explain this phenomenon. Only on the sodium-free substrate can Li+ ions enter the CZTSSe host lattice, and doping Li+ ions on the SLG substrate are nearly identical to doping Na+ ions.

Evaluation of the electrochemical behavior and structural reversibility of Li3−xNaxV2(PO4)3/C (0≤x≤3) as anode materials for Na-ion batteries

Youren Dong,Shangshu Qian,Lianyi Shao,Haoxiang Yu,Lei Yan,Peng Li,Xiaoting Lin,Nengbing Long,Miao Shui,Jie Shu

A series of Li 3− x Na x V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C (0≤ x ≤3) materials are successfully prepared by a simple solid-state reaction method and used for the first time as anode materials for Na-ion batteries. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that the phase structures of Li 3− x Na x V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C evolve along with the change of Li/Na atomic ratio (0≤x≤3). With increasing x in Li 3− x Na x V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C from 0.0 to 3.0, the main phase in as-prepared sample transforms from monoclinic Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 to rhombohedral Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , and finally to rhombohedral Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , which results in different sodium storage behavior and performance between Li 3− x Na x V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C (0≤ x ≤3) materials. Electrochemical results show that Li 3− x Na x V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C ( x =0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0) can deliver the initial charge capacities of 21.1, 35.9, 33.8, 41.7, 43.3, 43.9 and 47.7   mAh   g −1 at a current density of 10   mA   g −1 , respectively. After 45 cycles, the reversible capacities can be kept at 16.9, 45.1, 32.6, 44.6, 43.7, 37.8 and 27.3   mAh   g −1 for Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C, Li 2.5 Na 0.5 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C, Li 2 NaV 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C, Li 1.5 Na 1.5 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C, LiNa 2 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C, Li 0.5 Na 2.5 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C and Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C, respectively. Furthermore, the structural reversibility of Li 3− x Na x V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C ( x =1.0, 2.0, and 3.0) is also observed by in-situ XRD observation during sodiation/de-sodiation process. All these observed evidences indicate that only some of Li 3− x Na x V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C (0≤ x ≤3) can be used as possible sodium storage materials.

Resonance Emission Enhancement (REE) for Narrow Band Red-Emitting A2GeF6:Mn4+ (A = Na, K, Rb, Cs) Phosphors Synthesized via a Precipitation–Cation Exchange Route

Hongzhou Lian,Qingming Huang,Yeqing Chen,Kai Li,Sisi Liang,Mengmeng Shang,Manman Liu,Jun Lin

Narrow band red-emitting A2GeF6:Mn4+ (A = Na, K, Rb, Cs) phosphors were prepared through a two-step precipitation–cation exchange route using a K2MnF6 precursor as the Mn4+ source. The phase purity, morphology, and constituent were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) examination. Optical properties were investigated by photoluminescence spectra (PL and PLE) and high-resolution PL. A temperature-dependent PL examination was performed to investigate the electron–phonon coupling emission mechanism of Mn4+ in these alkali fluorogermanates. The PL data show that both ordered distribution and appropriate distance between Mn4+ ions are propitious for enhancement of the emission intensity. A resonance emission enhancement (REE) mechanism has been proposed to explain the intensity increment among these products. These phosphors present bright red emission under blue light (467 nm) illumination, among which Cs2GeF6:0.03Mn4+ exhibits the most excellent optical properties with a quantum yield (QY) of 93%. A WLED (white light-emitting diode) fabricated with blend of commercial YAG:Ce3+ and this phosphor emits intense warm white light with low color temperature (CCT = 3385 K) and high color rendering index (Ra = 90.5), implying its potential application as red phosphor in WLEDs.

The solubility of fluorite in Na-K-Cl solutions at temperatures up to 260 °C and ionic strengths up to 4 mol/kg H2O

Wei Zhang,Li Zhou,Hongfeng Tang,Heping Li,Wenlei Song,Gang Xie

The solubility of fluorite in hydrothermal conditions is important in ore forming and geothermal processes and groundwater utilization. However, a quantitative description of the geochemical behavior of fluorite under hydrothermal conditions has not been previously reported. In this work, the solubility of fluorite in Na-K-Cl solutions at temperatures up to 260 °C and ionic strengths up to 4 M was determined by experiments and modeling. The solubility products obtained in this work at 30 and 50 °C under ambient pressure and those from literature were used to regress the density model parameters for fluorite solubility product calculation at high temperature. The Pitzer interaction model was adopted to calculate the activity coefficient . The fluorite solubility determined in KCl solution at 250 °C under vapor saturated pressure and that from the literature were combined with the low-temperature thermodynamic properties of heat capacity and osmotic coefficient to obtain the binary parameters of NaF and KF at temperatures up to 260 °C. A thermodynamic model was then developed for calculating the fluorite solubility in Na-K-Cl solution at temperatures up to 260 °C, under vapor saturated pressure and ionic strengths up to 4 M. As calculated from this model, fluorite solubility measured at 200 °C and 0.1 M NaCl was well predicted. Both temperature and ionic strength had significant effects on fluorite solubility, and fluorite exhibited a similar dissolution pattern in both NaCl and KCl solution. When the concentration was lower than 2 M, the solubility of fluorite first increased with temperature, reached a maximum at approximately 100 °C, and then decreased. When the concentration was higher than 2 M, the solubility of fluorite increased monotonically with temperature.

Li+ substitution induced O3/O′3 biphasic tailoring strategies enhancing anion/cation synergetic redox of Na-rich manganese-based cathode for sodium-ion batteries

Zhijie Zhang,Yilin Zhou,Xiaodong Zhang,Jixian Ma,Miaoning Yao,Jie Sun,Tong He,Xuexia He,Zhibin Lei,Ruibin Jiang,Zong-huai Liu,Qi Li

Na-rich manganese-based layered oxide cathodes have presented potential applications in high energy–density sodium-ion batteries due to their cost-effectiveness and large theoretical specific capacity. However, the low kinetics of anionic redox reaction and lattice distortion caused by the Mn 3+ Jahn-teller effect greatly hindered the actual capacity, rate, and cycling performances of these cathodes. Herein, a Li + substitution induced O3/O′3 biphasic tailoring strategy has been proposed for constructing the Na-rich NaLi 0.2 Mn 0.8 O 2 (NLMO) cathode. Compared with conventional O′3-Na 1.2 Mn 0.8 O 2 (NMO) cathode, the O3/O′3-NLMO cathode enabled to provide an ultrahigh capacity of 233 mAh g −1 , superior capacity retention of 86 % after 50 cycles, and outstanding rate performance with the recorded-up capacity of 165 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 200 mA g −1 . In addition, NLMO also displayed rapid Na + -diffusion and more structural reversibility of O3/O′3-P3-O1-P3-O3/O′3 during the entire charging and discharging processes. The above excellent performances of NLMO cathode could be attributed to the well-designed O3/O′3 biphasic structure that provides the synergistic function of drastically enhancing reaction kinetics of anionic (O − /O 2– ) couple and efficiently alleviating multiphase transitions caused by Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ cationic couple. This unique finding of Li + substitution induced biphasic structure provides an insight for developing economical and high-performance Na-rich oxide cathodes.

Insight into Tendentious Multisite Colonization, Site Environment Modulation, and Energy Transfer of Steady Ba2CaB2Si4O14: Ce/Tb/Sm/Sr/Na toward nUV-Pumped wLED Application

Pengju Xia,Yifeng Lei,Wanyuan Li,Kaiting Wu,Chengyu Ni,Man Xu,Wubin Dai

With the growing public awareness of protecting vision and prevention of hazardous effects, there is much-needed research on a “healthy” full visible spectrum under near-ultraviolet (nUV) excitation in phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-wLEDs) to fill the “cyan gap” and avoid employing a blue LED chip. Herein, a novel series of borosilicates Ba2CaB2Si4O14 (BCBS): Ce3+/Tb3+/Sm3+/Sr2+/Na+ phosphors, presenting color-tunable photoluminescence (PL), high quantum yield (QY), and thermal stability, were designed and synthesized via a facile solid-phase reaction. The Rietveld analyses, density functional theory (DFT) simulations, and theoretical calculations of bond energy together imply the site occupations of Ce/Tb/Sm on Ba2+/Ca2+ sites with a preferred location on Ca2+ over the Ba2+ site. The broad/bright cyan-PL from BCBS: Ce under nUV excitation is associated with the allowed f–d transitions of Ce3+ and dual-site occupancies. The forbidden f–f transitions of both the green-PL of Tb and the red-PL of Sm were insensitive to the site environment and helpful to PL color regulation. The cascading Ce → Tb → Sm energy transfer is confirmed, where Tb is regarded as an energy transfer (ET) bridge to avoid the metal–metal charge transfer (MMCT) effect. The introduction of Na+ as both flux and charge compensator is for the sake of decreasing defects from heterovalent substitutions and regulating morphology. Further incorporation of Sr2+ is to modulate the lattice environments of dopants for controlling the shift of PL. Finally, as a proof-of-concept implement, a pc-wLED assembled by BCBS: Ce/Tb/Sm/Sr/Na and an nUV LED chip via a remote “capping” packaging strategy show attractive performance.

Unlocking Na-Storage Potential: Hierarchical NASICON Na4MnV(PO4)3 Cathode with Precise V(III)/Mn(II) Integration through the Citric Acid-Derived Carbon Layer

Hongjie Chen,Yixuan Su,Yucong Chen,Minghan Bao,Mingjun Wu,Junyang Chen,Weitao Chen,Qiang Ru

The inherent low electronic conductivity of NASICON-type Na4MnV(PO4)3 (NMVP) impedes its use in advanced energy storage. Herein, we address this challenge by introducing a citric acid-derived carbon coating to elevate the material’s conductivity and electrochemical performance. By precisely tailoring the configuration of the carbon layer, we fabricated Na4MnV(PO4)3 encapsulated by a carbon coating (NMVP@C) and constructed a 3D hierarchical architecture with incorporated V(III) and Mn(II) states, which prompts the reversible redox reaction, augments Na+ storage capability, and mitigates volume expansion during cycling. The optimal cathode manifests superior rate capability and a long life span with 107.5 mA h g–1 at 1 C and 82.5% capacity retention over 5000 cycles at 20 C. The hard carbon//NMVP@C full cell confirms practical applicability with good electrochemical performance. This work underscores the pivotal interplay among the carbon layer, Na+ mobility, and structural integrity in NASICON cathodes, offering a pathway to develop high-performance and cost-effective cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Disrupting Aeromonas sobria quorum sensing with HNTs-zingerone embedded CS/CMC-Na film: A novel strategy for prolonging freshness of refrigerated sea bass fillets

Yanqing Li,Xuchen Li,Shaomei Li,Jiao Li,Xiang Zou,Hongwei Zhan,Guanyuan Qu,Lixiu Zhang,Yongjun Sun,Wenming Ju,Mengqi Ye,Pengdong Sun,Jingyuan Li,Yang Deng,Ting Ding

Aeromonas sobria , recognized as a psychrotrophic specific spoilage organism in refrigerated aquatic products, facilitates its proliferation by metabolizing proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, thereby generating spoilage-associated metabolites and compromising product quality. Quorum sensing (QS), a bacterial cell-to-cell communication mechanism, orchestrates the secretion of virulence and spoilage factors in A. sobria via the LuxI/R QS system. Targeting this regulatory pathway presents a novel strategy to mitigate spoilage and extend the shelf life of aquatic products. Previous studies have demonstrated that zingerone (ZRN) exhibits quorum-quenching activity at sub-inhibitory concentrations; however, its practical application is constrained by limited solubility and bioavailability. To overcome these challenges, ZRN was encapsulated within halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and incorporated into a self-assembled composite film composed of chitosan (CS) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na). The fabricated film was characterized for its structural, thermal, and mechanical properties and subsequently evaluated for its preservation efficacy on refrigerated perch fillets. The composite film exhibited a homogeneous surface morphology with uniformly dispersed HNTs, alongside adequate thermal stability, tensile strength, and physicochemical attributes suitable for refrigerated aquatic product preservation. Notably, the film suppressed spoilage indicators, including total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and bacterial spoilage potential, without inhibiting A. sobria growth. Furthermore, it mitigated muscle tissue degradation and biogenic amine formation in perch fillets during refrigerated storage. Molecular docking simulations revealed that ZRN competitively binds to the LuxR-type receptor at the same binding pocket as the endogenous autoinducer C 4 -HSL, thereby disrupting QS signaling. Collectively, this ZRN-loaded composite film represents a promising biodegradable packaging solution for enhancing the quality and shelf life of refrigerated aquatic foods.

Characteristics and mechanisms of dissolution (mixed Na2SO4-K2SO4, Na2SO4-Na/KCl) and deposition (Na2SO4, K2SO4, KCl, mixed Na2SO4-KCl) of salts in supercritical water

Peng Feng,Donghai Xu,Kunkun Song,Gang Yin,Guanyu Jiang,Yang Yang,Yaling He

Supercritical water oxidation efficiently degrades organic waste but faces challenges from salt deposition due to the low solubilities of salts in supercritical water (SCW). This study investigated the characteristics and mechanisms of dissolution and deposition of mixed sulfate and chloride salts in SCW. At low water densities the common ion effect was observed in Na 2 SO 4 /K 2 SO 4 mixtures. Na + tended to occupy the junctions between SO 4 2- , while K + tended to occupy the cluster endings. Due to the weaker electrostatic interaction between K + (with larger ionic radius) and SO 4 2- , large and medium-sized clusters were more prone to decomposition in K + -rich solutions. K 2 SO 4 induced a “salting-in” effect on Na 2 SO 4 , whereas Na 2 SO 4 exerted a “salting-out” effect on K 2 SO 4 at high water densities. Both sulfates exhibited heterogeneous nucleation, depositing on heated sidewalls as nucleation sites, with Na 2 SO 4 proving more difficult to remove than K 2 SO 4 . In KCl/Na 2 SO 4 mixtures, homogeneously nucleated chloride salts created many preferential nucleation sites for Na 2 SO 4 deposition.

Pre-curing treatment optimises the grain growth of high-performance Na super ionic conductor–type Na3V2(PO4)3 thin films for sodium-ion batteries

Haolong Tan,Tongwei Gao,Wensheng Yang,Yue Gao,Quan Xie,Yunjun Ruan,Qian Chen,Tinghong Gao

The rapid development of microelectronic devices has increased the demand for miniature energy storage systems that are highly safe and exhibit long cycling life and excellent energy density. However, the lack of low-cost and high-performance fabrication methods presents a significant challenge to thin-film electrode fabrication. This study reports a strategy combining controllable pre-curing treatment with rapid thermal annealing (RTA), which enables in situ fabrication of high-quality sodium vanadium phosphate [Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 ] thin films. RTA facilitates the cleavage of weak metal–O bonds in the precursor film, whereas optimisation of the pre-curing duration (0–100 s) effectively eliminates organic residues and strengthens the carbon framework, suppressing particle agglomeration. This synergistic control substantially improves crystallization uniformity and film densification, resulting in a refined grain structure and highly oriented crystal facets. Under optimal conditions, the thin film demonstrates a high specific capacity of 85.6 mAh g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , retains 72.5 mAh g −1 even at 20 A g −1 , and demonstrates 90.3 % capacity retention after 200 cycles. Moreover, the assembled full sodium-ion cell exhibits an average operating voltage of 1.3 V while maintaining 94.2 % capacity retention after 500 cycles. This study elucidates for the first time the synergistic regulation pathway of the pre-curing–RTA coupling mechanism in Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 thin-film fabrication and proposes an advanced preparation strategy for cost-effective, highly integrated, high-power sodium-ion thin-film devices, providing critical theoretical foundations and robust technical support for next-generation all–solid state sodium microbattery design and development.

Synthesis, optical properties, and applications of Eu3+, Na+-doped high-color-purity Sr3MgNb2O9 red phosphors for w-LEDs and the detection of latent fingerprints

Houteng Zhao,Yilian Ran,Xiya Miao,Siyu Cheng,Dongze Li,Yufeng Du,Xiang Liu,Ruijin Yu

A series of novel phosphors, doping Eu 3+ and Na + ions in the Sr 3 MgNb 2 O 9 (SMNO) crystal lattice (SMNO: x Eu 3+ , x Na + , x  = 0.5–30 mol%), was successfully synthesized through high-temperature solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Rietveld refinement confirmed the successful synthesis of SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + . The phosphor belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and the P 3 ¯ m 1 (No.164) space group. The bandgap energy of SMNO was calculated with Materials Studio and measured with the use of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The excitation spectrum of SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + displays multiple narrow absorption peaks in the violet-blue region as well as a charge transfer band (CTB) near 300 nm, exhibiting the highest peak at 394 nm. Four distinct characteristic peaks are observed in the emission spectrum of SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + . Notably, the peak at 601 nm shows the highest emission intensity due to the radiative transition from 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 . By varying doping concentrations, it was determined that an optimal concentration of 5 mol%Eu 3+ resulted in phosphors, with high color purity exceeding 99 %. Concentration quenching is attributed to the nearest neighbor ions interaction. Furthermore, SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + exhibited good stability in 300–480 K, with luminescent intensity remaining 68.6 % at 420 K and 54.4 % at 480 K compared to room temperature (300 K). The internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of SMNO:5%Eu 3+ , 5 %Na + is 65.0 %. Both red and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were prepared using SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + . The chromaticity coordinates of w-LED were measured as (0.357, 0.376), correlating to a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4685 K and exhibiting a good color rendering index (CRI, R a  = 88). Additionally, the latent fingerprint (LFP) development demonstrated clear visualization of Levels I-III characteristic structures of fingerprints when utilizing SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + . These findings suggest promising applications for SMNO:Eu 3+ , Na + in w-LED lighting and LFP development.

Preparation of BaAl2-xGaxSi2O8:Ce3+, M+ (Li, Na, K) blue-cyan phosphors based on charge compensation and cation substitution strategies and luminescence performance study

Halizati Abulimiti,Aierken Sidike,He Jiuyang

Highly efficient blue-cyan phosphors can fill the cyan gap in conventional white light-emitting diode (LED) devices to improve the spectral continuity while effectively increasing the white LED colour rendering index (Ra). In this study, Ba 0·94 Al 2- x Ga x Si 2 O 8 :0.06Ce 3+ , M + (Li, Na, K, x  = 0–0.8) blue-cyan phosphors with a feldspar structure were prepared by a high-temperature solid-phase method using charge compensation and cation substitution strategies. The barium (Ba) vacancy due to the charge-imbalance substitution of Ce 3+ is compensated by the different charge compensators Li + , Na + , and K + . The charge compensators affect the luminescence performance of the samples, with the K + -compensated samples showing the greatest enhancement, with intensities up to 1.8 times that of the uncompensated samples. The cation substitution strategy using Ga 3+ to partially replace Al 3+ further improves the luminescence performance of the Ba 0·94 Al 2 Si 2 O 8 :0.06Ce 3+ , 0.04 K + sample, and the excitation band is also improved. In this case, the luminescence intensity of the Ba 0·94 Al 2 Si 2 O 8 :0.06Ce 3+ luminescent material is increased by a factor of 6, and a broadband blue-cyan phosphor with a full-width at half-maximum of 118 nm containing blue, cyan and green is obtained. The co-doping of charge compensators and partial cation substitution improved the luminescence performance of phosphors. The representative sample Ba 0·94 Al 1.6 Ga 0.4 Si 2 O 8 :0.06Ce 3+ , 0.04 K + has a luminescence intensity at a temperature of 150 °C that is 83.2% of that at room temperature and good thermal stability . The combination of 365 nm near-ultraviolet (NUV) LED chips with Ba 0·94 Al 1.6 Ga 0.4 Si 2 O 8 :0.06Ce 3+ , 0.04 K + and the commercial red powder (Ca, Sr)AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ yields a white LED device with an Ra of up to 93 and a correlated colour temperature (CCT) of 4825 K. These results show that the blue-cyan phosphor complements the cyan component while simplifying the manufacturing process of white LEDs.
