Synthesis of ZIF-8/PVA microspheres with the assistance of a microfluidic device and their controlled drug release properties

Changfeng Zeng,Jie Li,Jie Gong,Lixiong Zhang,Liang Yu

ZIF-8/PVA microspheres with an even size were synthesized with the assistance of a simple microfluidic device. The ZIF-8/PVA microdroplets were first generated in a simple co-flow microfluidic device using a PVA aqueous solution dispersed with ZIF-8 nanoparticles as the dispersed phase and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) as the continuous phase. Subsequently, the ZIF-8/PVA microdroplets were further extracted to form ZIF-8/PVA microspheres. The influence of the type of continuous phase on the sphericity of microspheres was investigated and the effect of ZIF-8 content was studied. Further studies showed that decreasing the extraction rate and using additives of NaCl in the dispersed phase could improve the sphericity of the ZIF-8/PVA microspheres. Finally, the synthesized ZIF-8/PVA microspheres were used to study the loading and release of tetracycline. The results showed that the loading of ZIF-8/PVA microspheres was more than 5 times higher than that of pure PVA microspheres. The drug release time of ZIF-8/PVA microspheres was much longer than that of the PVA microspheres and the release rate was significantly affected by the pH of the environment.

A dual chemical cross-linking strategy for PVA hydrogels with high tensile strength, low hysteresis and versatile sensing applications

Shengping Dai,Jingping Yao,Yixin Zhang,jinhua Cai,Jiaxin Zou,Huixian Ye,Yan Sui,Jingning Ding,Guanggui Cheng

Research on conductive elastomer with low hysteresis holds significant scientific importance for accelerating technological development of stable sensing electronic skin. Traditional polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel is weak in mechanical properties and has serious hysteresis, which hampers its applications as tensile consecutive cycle sensors. Here, a covalent cross-linking network of PVA hydrogel was constructed through a condensation reaction by PVA and dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea (2d resin). On the other hand, a dynamic cross-linking network of PVA hydrogel was formed by the two-step reaction of borax with PVA, which acts as a sacrificial bond to dissipate energy during the loading-unloading process. In brief, the introduction of dual chemical cross-linking structure can adjust the mechanical properties of hydrogels (PVA/2d DN) in the range of 623–954 % and 35–86 kPa, with low hysteresis (residual strains of 4.13 % at 0–500 %), and fatigue resistance. The PVA/2d DN hydrogel was used as resistance strain sensor, capacitive pressure sensor, and triboelectric self-power sensor, which showed low detection limit, high sensitivity, and cycle stability. It has a wide application in human motion monitoring and metal recognition, etc. This work provided a versatile and effective way to design PVA hydrogel with high tensile strength and low hysteresis.

A highly sensitive and stretchable flexible strain sensor based on a PVC/PVA dual-substrate composite for wearable electronics

Shujia Chen,Tianyun Dong,Yuwei Lan

Flexible strain sensors have garnered significant attention for applications in wearable electronics and human–machine interfaces. However, many previously reported sensors suffer from limited deformability, complex fabrication, and unstable signal output under dynamic conditions, largely due to the low polarity, poor flexibility, and weak interfacial compatibility of commonly used polymer substrates. In this work, we report a PVC/PVA/MCNTs composite, in which the incorporation of PVA significantly improves the matrix polarity and interfacial interaction, thereby enhancing flexibility and processability. Fabricated via a simple solvent-casting method, the sensor exhibits high stretchability (>300 %), low hysteresis (2.04 %), fast response (240 ms), and stable performance over 1000 dynamic cycles. The sensor enables accurate, real-time monitoring of human joint movements and tracks varying bending angles of robotic fingers, confirming its practical value in biomechanical sensing and soft robotics control. These results demonstrate that the developed composite substrate exhibits excellent mechanical and sensing performance. The introduction of dual substrate components enhances matrix polarity, thereby broadening the range of compatible functional fillers and establishing a promising platform for future flexible electronic applications.

Novel cellulose-PVA bioactive aerogels with Portulaca oleracea extracts for chilled meat preservation: Antimicrobial efficacy and microbial community modulation

Xiaomin Zhao,Xingyu Ren,Haoming Li,Bin Zhang,Xiaojing Fan,Xianchao Feng

Development of effective, safe, and degradable food packaging is essential to meet the demands of consumers and to ensure the continued growth of the food industry. In this study, superabsorbent bioactive aerogels based on cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol combined with the antibacterial bioactive extracts extracted from Portulaca oleracea were fabricated for the preservation of chilled meats. The main physicochemical and mechanical properties of the bioactive aerogels were characterized and evaluated. The aerogels had remarkable water and oil sorption abilities and excellent antibacterial capacities, which could significantly delay spoilage of the chilled meat. Compared with commercialized absorbent pads, the bioactive aerogels effectively delayed color changes and retarded the lipid oxidation of meat, and decreased the growth of bacterium during the storage time. The microbial community analysis showed that the bioactive aerogels treatments have significant impacts on the microbial flora of chilled meat, which can significantly inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas and Escherichia, two primary spoilage microorganisms. These findings suggested that the bioactive aerogels can effectively extend the shelf-life of chilled meat and have great application potential in novel active packaging

Facile fabrication of chlorine resistance Amd/TA-PVA/Amn COF composite membrane via multi-interfacial polymerization toward dye sieving

Xiaoyu Du,Tong Gu,Jingyu Xu,Yanqing Qu,Hongge Jia,Shuangping Xu,Mingyu Zhang,Jun Chen

Covalent organic framework (COF) membranes have garnered significant attention as a promising separation technology for dye wastewater treatment, owing to their meticulously ordered pore structure and exceptional chemical stability. The Polyamide COF (Amd-COF) membrane, characterized by amide-linkages, exhibits excellent hydrophilicity and chemical stability, whereas the polyamine COF (Amn-COF) membrane, featuring amine-linkages, demonstrates remarkable flexibility and resistance to chlorine. In this study, we present the synthesis of defect-free Amd/TA-PVA/Amn COF composite membranes with large area and continuous structure through multi-interfacial polymerization. The incorporation of an intermediate layer (TA-PVA) enables stable formation of strong hydrogen bonds between Amd-COF and Amn-COF, thereby enhancing the durability of the composite membranes. Due to the unique structural features and functional groups of the Amd/TA-PVA/Amn COF composite membranes, they exhibit not only high water permeability (119.24 L•m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) but also exceptional rejection efficiency towards Rhodamine B, achieving up to 96.55 % removal. Specifically, the membranes treated with a chlorination intensity of 2000 ppm exhibit stable permeance and dye rejection performance. Moreover, these membranes exhibit exceptional stability in both structure and performance over multiple cycles. This can primarily be attributed to the highest density of amino moieties and phenolic hydroxyl groups on their surface. This work underscores the significant potential of COF membrane incorporating amide and amine functionalities for high-performance separation and anti-chlorine applications.

A novel PVA/QCS/AgNP hydrogel with antibacterial and healing-promoting efficacy for preventing postoperative pancreatic fistula in rats

Yuan Zhou,Fangsheng Chen,Ronggui Lin,Heguang Huang,Maoen Pan

Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), a life-threatening complication following pancreatic surgery, demands innovative biomaterials to prevent infection and promote healing simultaneously. Traditional sealants lack controlled degradation, mechanical robustness, and antibacterial efficacy. Here, we developed a multifunctional hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), quaternized chitosan (QCS), and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to address these challenges. The PVA/QCS/AgNP hydrogel was synthesized via UV-induced reduction of Ag⁺ and freeze‒thaw cycles, yielding a mechanically stable network with a uniform AgNP dispersion. In vitro, the hydrogel exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , and other pathogens while maintaining > 90 % fibroblast viability. Its controlled AgNP release profile balanced antimicrobial potency and biocompatibility. In a rat pancreatic fistula model, the hydrogel significantly reduced fluid leakage and inflammation, accelerated collagen deposition, and normalized serum amylase levels within 14 days. A transcriptomic analysis revealed the upregulation of the cell cycle and extracellular matrix remodeling pathways, in addition to the suppression of proinflammatory cytokines, elucidating its dual roles in infection control and tissue regeneration. By integrating robust sealing, enzymatic resistance, and immunomodulatory properties, this hydrogel represents a clinically translatable solution for POPF management, outperforming conventional therapies and advancing the design of multifunctional biomaterials for complex surgical applications.

Electrospun core (PVA-ninhydrin)-sheath (PVP) fibrous film for multi-level feature visualization and quantitative analysis of latent fingerprints

Shiyue Ma,Hongyu Chen,Xin Du,Lu Liu,Yanfeng Zhang,Rongliang Ma,Yongqiang Wen,Meiqin Zhang

Background The development of level 3 features in various latent fingerprints (LFPs) is pivotal to improving the matching accuracy of damaged fingerprints. Among the various LFP development methods, the traditional ninhydrin method is widely employed in forensic science. However, it exhibits two key limitations: first, it is only effective for developing eccrine LFPs; second, it can only reveal level 2 features. These constraints compromise the extraction efficiency and utility of the developed fingerprints, thereby restricting the method's applicable scenarios. Results We report the fabrication of core (polyvinyl alcohol ninhydrin (PVA-ninhydrin))-sheath (polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)) fibrous films by using coaxial electrospinning technology for high-level development of various LFPs. The film achieves safe, fast and chemical visualization of eccrine, sebaceous and natural LFPs with levels 1–3 features, showing a better visualization effect than ninhydrin solution and PVA-Nin fibrous film. It may be attributed to high specific surface area of thin film with uniform distribution of ninhydrin in the PVA core for high proportion of active sites of amino acids, which enables the film to have strong sweat adsorption and spreading properties. It further allows a more thorough and complete reaction between ninhydrin and the amino acids in the fingerprint residues that enhances the contrast of the developed photos. The statistical analyses of sweat pore count, ridge width, and pore spacing show high consistency and accuracy. Significant This study developed the core (PVA-ninhydrin)-sheath (PVP) fibrous films to achieve safe, fast and chemical visualization of eccrine, sebaceous and natural LFPs with levels 1–3 features and accurate quantitative analysis of the developed eccrine one. Moreover, even the interspacing and angles between sweat pores can be derived from level 3 features of the developed fingerprints. These results lay a robust foundation for subsequent fingerprint identification and personal recognition.

Cross-Linking of Centrifugally Spun Starch/Polyvinyl Alcohol (ST/PVA) Composite Ultrafine Fibers and Antibacterial Activity Loaded with Ag Nanoparticles

Xianglong Li,Yongna Zhang,Weicai Kong,Jing Zhou,Teng Hou,Xianggui Zhang,Lele Zhou,Mingbo Sun,Shu Liu,Bin Yang

In this research, centrifugally spun ultrafine composite starch/polyvinyl alcohol (ST/PVA) fibers with high water stability were prepared by cross-linking with a mixture of glutaraldehyde and formic acid in the form of vapor phase. The effect of cross-linking temperature combined with time on the water stability, crystal structure, and thermal properties of fibers was investigated to obtain the optimum parameters. On this basis, we further prepared Ag-loaded ST/PVA fibers with different contents of nano silver. The structure and properties of Ag-loaded fibers, which cross-linked under the optimum parameters, were analyzed. As a result, the Ag-loaded fibers exhibited excellent water stability and mechanical properties and possessed inhibition zone diameters of 3 and 2 mm to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus. aureus, respectively. The antibacterial property of the Ag-loaded ST/PVA fibers provided a new route for developing less costly antibacterial fiber materials in the future.

Preparation and characterization of a sol-gel derived silica/PVA-Py hybrid anion exchange membranes for alkaline fuel cell application

Yifu Wang,Dan Wang,Jilin Wang,Lulu Wang

Ammonium functionalized anion exchange silica precursor (AESP) is synthesized by 3-(2-Aminoethylamino) propyltriethoxysilane and (2, 3-epoxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride. Then the corresponding series of membranes based on pyridine functionalized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-Py) with varying AESP content are prepared using sol-gel method. Obtained membranes show ion exchange capacities (IEC) ranging from 0.54 mmol·g −1 to 0.92 mmol·g −1 , but the opposite trend of water uptakes (WU) from 123.97% down to 69.09% because of the formation of organic-inorganic network. The hybrid membranes also exhibit good thermal stability (>140 °C), excellent mechanical properties (25.37 MPa) and high OH − conductivity (9.63 × 10 −2  S·cm −1 , 80 °C). Compared with the commercial Nafion®-117 membrane, the prepared hybrid membrane performs a much lower methanol permeability (7.57 × 10 −8  cm 2 ·s −1 for prepared membrane, 2.00 × 10 −6  cm 2 ·s −1 for Nafion®-117 membrane, 3 M methanol solutions, 30 °C). Only 10.7% decreases in OH − conductivity can be observed in 6 M 80 °C NaOH solutions after 360 h immersions, exhibiting excellent alkaline stability. The highest peak power density of the single cell with 5 M KOH + 3 M methanol fuel is 52.56 mW·cm −2 at 80 °C and 0.2 MPa O 2 .

An energy-saving, bending sensitive, and self-healing PVA-borax-IL ternary hydrogel electrolyte for visual flexible electrochromic strain sensors

Jia-ning Liu,Qi He,Ming-yue Pan,Kui Du,Cheng-Bin Gong,Qian Tang

Hydrogel electrolytes (HGEs) with good sensitivity, high conductivity, high transparency, excellent flexibility, and self-healing ability have become a research hotspot in wearable electronic devices, flexible electronic skin, and other fields. However, the development of HGEs with all these advantages remains a challenge; this limits their applications in flexible electrochromic devices, artificial skin, and biomimetic color-changing strain sensors. This study reports a polyvinyl alcohol-borax-ionic liquid (PVA-borax-IL0.3)-based ternary HGE, which shows these desired characteristics. The PVA-borax-IL0.3 HGE was prepared by a simple one-pot method. The addition of an IL component to PVA-borax endows the obtained ternary HGE with good ionic conductivity and bending sensitivity while maintaining high transparency and self-healing ability of the PVA-borax hydrogel. Based on its excellent performance, the PVA-borax-IL0.3 HGE was used in an electrochromic device with 1,1′-bis(4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl)-[4,4′-bipyridine]-1,1′-diium dichloride as the electrochromic material. This electrochromic device exhibited excellent photoelectric performance including low coloration voltage (−0.6 V), high optical contrast (65.3%), high coloration efficiency (510 cm2 C−1), good cycling stability (decay in ΔT% after 90 000 s (3000 cycles): 6.9%), ultra-low energy consumption (168 μW cm−2), and dual-colored electrochromic behavior. A visual flexible electrochromic strain sensor (VFECSS) was fabricated by integrating strain sensing and electrochromic systems. This VFECSS exhibited excellent bending sensitivity and strain response performance, and it could undergo an interactive color change under the external action, which can be used for intuitive and non-invasive monitoring of complex human activities. This novel VFECSS with ultra-low energy consumption is expected to be promising for application in soft electronic skin, information encryption, wearable devices, and other fields.

Fabrication and evaluation of melamine-formaldehyde resin crosslinked PVA composite coating membranes with enhanced oxygen barrier properties for food packaging

Qingmei Zhu,Xianghui Wang,Xiuqiong Chen,Changjiang Yu,Qi Yin,Huiqiong Yan,Qiang Lin

Since PVA membrane is of limited use for food packaging applications in moist conditions, polyvinyl alcohol/melamine-formaldehyde resin (PVA/MF) composite coating membranes with various contents of MF were fabricated by a chemical crosslinking method to reduce the sensitivity of PVA to moisture. The morphology, chemical structure, thermal and mechanical properties of the resultant PVA/MF composite coating membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR spectrometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and universal testing machine. In addition, their hazes and OTRs were also measured as a function of MF content. Experimental results showed that –OH in the molecular chain of MF and PVA could be crosslinked at room temperature to form a dense polymeric structure, resulting in the increase in viscosity and the decline in water absorption. The incorporation of MF into PVA gave rise to the enhancement of crosslinking through the C–O–C bonding and strong interface interaction between MF and PVA that was beneficial to improving its thermal stability, mechanical properties and barrier properties. Furthermore, the PVA/MF composite coating membranes exhibited superior transparency due to their good leveling and wettability on both BOPET and PLA substrates. The moisture resistance and barrier properties of the MF/PVA composite coated BOPET and PLA membranes under high humidity conditions have been greatly improved, and the oxygen transmission rates (OTRs) under 75% RH could still remain at about 1.0 cm3 per m2 per day. These characteristics of the PVA/MF composite coating membranes have made them exhibit widespread application prospects for coating membranes in the food packaging field.
