Multilayered TNAs/SnO2/PPy/β-PbO2 anode achieving boosted electrocatalytic oxidation of As(III)

Wenlan Ji,Yuanjie Xiong,Yuan Wang,Tian C. Zhang,Shaojun Yuan

Dealing with arsenic pollution has been of great concern owing to inherent toxicity of As(III) to environments and human health. Herein, a novel multilayered SnO 2 /PPy/ β -PbO 2 structure on TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TNAs/SnO 2 /PPy/ β -PbO 2 ) was synthesized by a multi-step electrodeposition process as an efficient electrocatalyst for As(III) oxidation in aqueous solution. Such TNAs/SnO 2 /PPy/ β -PbO 2 electrode exhibited a higher charge transfer, tolerable stability, and high oxygen evolution potential (OEP). The intriguing structure with a SnO 2 , PPy , and β -PbO 2 active layers provided a larger electrochemical active area for electrocatalytic As(III) oxidation. The as-synthesized TNAs/SnO 2 /PPy/ β -PbO 2 anode achieved drastically enhanced As(Ⅲ) conversion efficiency of 90.72% compared to that of TNAs/ β -PbO 2 at circa 45.4%. The active species involved in the electrocatalytic oxidation process included superoxide radical (•O 2 − ), sulfuric acid root radicals (•SO 4 − ), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). This work offers a new strategy to construct a high-efficiency electrode to meet the requirements of favorable electrocatalytic oxidation properties, good stability, and high electrocatalytic activity for As(III) transformation to As(V).

Electrohydrodynamic-Jet-Printed SnO2-TiO2-Composite-Based Microelectromechanical Systems Sensor with Enhanced Ethanol Detection

Danyang Wang,Dongqi Yu,Menghan Xu,Xue Chen,Jilin Gu,Lei Huang

Ethanol sensors have found extensive applications across various industries, including the chemical, environmental, transportation, and healthcare sectors. With increasing demands for enhanced performance and reduced energy consumption, there is a growing need for developing new ethanol sensors. Micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) devices offer promising prospects in gas sensor applications due to their compact size, low power requirements, and seamless integration capabilities. In this study, SnO 2 -TiO 2 nanocomposites with varying molar ratios of SnO 2 and TiO 2 were synthesized via ball milling and then printed on MEMS chips for ethanol sensing using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing. The study indicates that the two metal oxides dispersed evenly, resulting in a well-formed gas-sensitive film. The SnO 2 -TiO 2 composite exhibits the best performance at a molar ratio of 1:1, with a response value of 25.6 to 50 ppm ethanol at 288 °C. This value is 7.2 times and 1.8 times higher than that of single SnO 2 and TiO 2 gas sensors, respectively. The enhanced gas sensitivity can be attributed to the increased surface reactive oxygen species and optimized material resistance resulting from the chemical and electronic effects of the composite.

Interfacial engineering in SnO2-embedded graphene anode materials for high performance lithium-ion batteries

Li Xiaolu,Zhao Zhongtao,Deng Yufeng,Ouyang Dongsheng,Yang Xianfeng,Chen Shuguang,Liu Peng

Tin dioxide is regarded as an alternative anode material rather than graphite due to its high theoretical specific capacity. Modification with carbon is a typical strategy to mitigate the volume expansion effect of SnO 2 during the charge process. Strengthening the interface bonding is crucial for improving the electrochemical performance of SnO 2 /C composites. Here, SnO 2 -embedded reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite with a low graphene content of approximately 5 wt.% was in situ synthesized via a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted hydrothermal method. The structural integrity of the SnO 2 /rGO composite is significantly improved by optimizing the Sn–O–C electronic structure with CTAB, resulting a reversible capacity of 598 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 . CTAB-assisted synthesis enhances the rate performance and cyclic stability of tin dioxide/graphene composites, and boosts their application as the anode materials for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Low temperature and fast response hydrogen gas sensor with Pd coated SnO2 nanofiber rods

Feipeng Wang,Kelin Hu,Hongcheng Liu,Qi Zhao,Kaizheng Wang,Yuxin Zhang

In this work, we introduced a structure of Pd coated SnO 2 nanofiber rods (NFRs) prepared by electrospinning and magnet sputtering. Pd was first deposited on the obtained nanofibers as a catalyst and then fully dispersed during the resulting of SnO 2 to improve the hydrogen response. The gas sensing tests showed the palladium enhanced the hydrogen response at low temperature (160 °C). When the hydrogen gas concentration was 100 ppm, the limit of detection (LOD) of sensor was as low as 0.25 ppm and the response time was as short as 4 s. Moreover, Pd coated SnO 2 also had excellent hydrogen selectivity and repeatability. The gas sensor was suitable for the detection of hydrogen in low-temperature environment. This work provided a new method for the low temperature hydrogen gas sensor with a fast response and low LOD .

Synthesis of hierarchical worm-like SnO2@C aggregates and their enhanced lithium storage properties

Zhen-Guo Wu,Jun-Tao Li,Yan-Jun Zhong,Jie Liu,Xiao-Dong Guo,Ling Huang,Ben-He Zhong,Shi-Gang Sun

The present paper reports a synthetic strategy of hierarchical worm-like SnO 2 @C aggregates with enhanced electrochemical performances. Specifically, a glucose-assisted hydrothermal treatment of the intermediate Co–Sn alloy nanoparticles, which were formed by carbothermal reduction of mixed commercial SnO 2 and Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The SnO 2 @C sample exhibits enhanced cycling performance in comparison with raw commercial SnO 2 nanoparticles and intermediate Co–Sn alloy nanoparticles when used as anode of lithium ion battery. A stable capacity of 533.6   mA   h   g −1 at 100   mA   g −1 and 477.0   mA   h   g −1 at 400   mA   g −1 remains after 60 cycles. When the current density increases to 1600   mA   g −1 , the SnO 2 @C sample still deliver a high capacity of 384.2   mA   h   g −1 . The superior electrochemical performances could be attributed to the synergistic effect of unique worm-like aggregates structure and carbon surface-layer, which facilitate the electron transportation and buffer the large volume change.

Influence of surfactants on the morphology of SnO2 nanocrystals prepared via a hydrothermal method

Mi Wang,Yanfeng Gao,Lei Dai,Chuanxiang Cao,Xuhong Guo

Nanoscaled SnO 2 with different morphologies has been synthesized via a simple hydrothermal process at 180   °C using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS), cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) or tetrapropyl ammonium bromide (TPAB) as surfactant . All the prepared SnO 2 are of a tetragonal crystal structure. Nanocubes, nanorods , nanosheets , nanobelts and nanoparticles were prepared when changing the type and dosage of organic surfactants. It is shown that anionic surfactant (SDS) and cationic surfactant (CTAB or TPAB) at their suitable addition amounts can largely influence the morphologies of SnO 2 nanocrystals . The effect is significantly dependent on the solvent types: water or ethanol. The non-ionic surfactant (PVP) can also change the morphologies like SDS but the impacts are less obvious. The effect of surfactants on the shape and size of SnO 2 nanoparticles was discussed in detail. The particle growth mechanism is described based on the electrostatic interactions and Van der Waals’ forces.

Transparent and conductive W-doped SnO2 thin films fabricated by an aqueous solution process

Mi Wang,Yanfeng Gao,Zhang Chen,Chuanxiang Cao,Jiadong Zhou,Lei Dai,Xuhong Guo

High-quality transparent and conductive tungsten-doped tin oxide (SnO 2 :W) thin films with different thickness (from 60 to 600   ±   10   nm) were fabricated on quartz glass substrates by a solution-based method. A stable solution was prepared from tin chloride and ammonium tungstate together with polyvinyl alcohol as a film-forming promoter. It was found that all films showed homogeneous composition, smooth surface with no cracks and high transparency with the optical band gap ranging from 3.93 to 4.31   eV. The effect of tungsten concentration, spin rate and annealing temperature on the morphological, electrical and optical properties of the films has been investigated. W doping has a large influence on the microstructure and the conductivity of the SnO 2 thin films . The lowest resistivity of 2.8   ×   10 −   3 Ω   ·   cm was obtained for a SnO 2 : 3 at% W film, which was prepared at 3000   rpm and annealed at 800   °C in air. An eight-layer film with a sheet resistance of 60 Ω/□ and a thickness of 606   nm could be fabricated by multiple coating operation, which still exhibited an optical transmittance of over 80% in the visible region from 400 to 700   nm.

Efficiency improvement of antimony selenide solar cells based on S-doped SnO2 buffer layer

Kangjun Geng,Zhengdong Feng,Tingyu Zhang,Shan Huang,Honcheng Zhu,Bangzhi Shen,Boning Dong,Yan Yan,Sai Jiang,Jianhua Qiu,Huafei Guo

Antimony Selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) exhibits potential as a solar energy material owing to its optimal bandgap, lack of toxicity, and abundance of earth abundant elements. Currently, cadmium sulfide (CdS) serves as the predominant buffer layer for Sb 2 Se 3 solar cells. However, the use of CdS hinders environmentally friendly advancement due to the toxic properties of the element cadmium. Hence, the quest for non-toxic buffer layers poses a significant challenge to the further advancement of Sb 2 Se 3 solar cells. In prior research, tin oxide (SnO 2 ) has been explored as a buffer layer. Nonetheless, the efficiency of SnO 2 /Sb 2 Se 3 solar cells was hampered by the rough surface of SnO 2 films and the poor crystallinity of Sb 2 Se 3 films. In this investigation, we enhanced device efficiency by improving the uniformity of the SnO 2 surface and enhancing the crystallinity of Sb 2 Se 3 through spin-coating sulfur (S) onto the SnO 2 film. Detailed examinations were conducted on the structure, optical, and electrical properties of the respective SnO 2 and Sb 2 Se 3 thin films. Ultimately, an efficiency of 3.38% was achieved using the spin-coated S:SnO 2 film, marking an 85% enhancement compared to the baseline device.

Gear effect between SnO2 nanotubes support and AuPdCu catalyst promotes efficient ethanol oxidation reaction

Jingzhou Liu,Qinan Ma,Shengjun Zhang,Xiaojun Zeng

Modulating the electronic interaction between catalysts and supports is recognized as an effective strategy to enhance catalytic performance. However, due to the complex electronic or coordination environments at the catalyst-support interface, designing supports capable of anchoring complex-structured metal nanoparticles (NPs) remains a challenge. Herein, we designed porous SnO 2 nanotubes (NTs) using an electrospinning and chemical etching strategy and successfully anchored nanoflower-like AuPdCu NPs composed of self-assembled nanowires onto their surface. The porous structure of SnO 2 NTs provides abundant anchoring sites for AuPdCu NPs. Furthermore, the petal-like structure of the AuPdCu NPs is firmly bonded to the pores of the SnO 2 NTs through a gear-like interlocking mechanism, resulting in a strong bond between the catalyst and support. The unique structural advantages of AuPdCu/SnO 2 , along with the electronic interaction between the support and catalyst, synergistically enhance catalytic performance. AuPdCu/SnO 2 exhibits a high mass activity of 4.53 A·mg Pd −1 for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and maintains a high current density (3.39 mA cm −2 ) after a 10000 s stability test. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the electronic interaction between AuPdCu NPs and SnO 2 NTs modulates the d-band center, thereby optimizing the adsorption strength of reaction intermediates and promoting the complete oxidation of ethanol.

Ligand Engineering of SnO2 Nanocrystal Ink for Low-Cost Inverted Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

Xinqian Xie,Haiyan Li,Xiang Hong,Songwang Yang

The integration of low-temperature, solution-processed inorganic electron transport layers (ETLs) into inverted flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs) remains a critical challenge due to the polar solvent-induced damage of the underlying perovskite film. Conventional SnO2 nanocrystal ink based on polar solvents inevitably causes irreversible damage to the perovskite layer in inverted PSCs. Herein, we propose a nonpolar ink based on oleate modified SnO2 nanocrystals. Exchanging the hydrophilic surface groups with long-chain oleate ligands allows the SnO2 nanocrystals to be stably dispersed in a nonpolar solvent of n-hexane. This avoids polar solvent-induced damage to the perovskite film and enables the deposition of a dense, pinhole-free SnO2 film directly onto the perovskite layer. The oleate ligands ensure solvent orthogonality, and their long alkyl chains enable more complete displacement of surface hydroxyls and more thorough passivation of surface defects than short-chain ligands through interchain van der Waals interactions. Consequently, the resulting inverted f-PSCs exhibit suppressed nonradiative recombination and improved carrier extraction. This yields a record efficiency of 22.19%, the highest value reported to date for inverted f-PSCs using solution-processed SnO2 nanocrystal ETLs. Furthermore, the dense film morphology combined with the hydrophobic alkyl chains significantly enhances the environmental and mechanical stability of the inverted f-PSCs. This study demonstrates that ligand engineering of nanocrystals enables the solution-processed fabrication of inorganic ETLs with nonpolar solvents without compromising interfacial optoelectronic quality, offering a viable route toward all-solution-processed inverted f-PSCs.

Tailoring uniform PdO dispersion on hierarchical mesoporous SnO2 nanospheres for enhanced hydrogen sensing performance

Xianting Zhang,Jie Ouyang,Haopan Hu,Lingjun Song,Yingguang Xie,Yihao Wang,Jiaxi Liu,Zhong Cao,Julan Zeng,Hongge Pan,Federico Rosei,Fen Xu,Yumei Luo,Lixian Sun

Hydrogen (H 2 ) is widely regarded as a clean energy carrier, yet its flammability underscores the need for highly sensitive and rapid gas sensors to ensure safe leak detection. Conventional noble-metal-modified SnO 2 sensors often suffer from slow sensing kinetics and high material costs due to poor noble metal dispersion and excessive doping content. Herein, we design and synthesize the SnO 2 -PdO composite with uniform nanosphere structure by a facile one-step template strategy. The optimized SnO 2 -PdO-2% sensor achieves excellent sensing performance with only 2 mol% Pd loading, benefiting from its mesoporous architecture, high specific surface area, and efficient SnO 2 /PdO heterointerfaces, which promote charge transfer and enhance the adsorption of active oxygen species. The sensor operates at a relatively low temperature of 180 °C with an ultrafast response time of 1 s and recovery time of 6 s. In addition, a theoretical detection limit of 54 ppb is obtained. The sensor also demonstrates preferential hydrogen sensing behavior, good long-term stability, and excellent reproducibility. This work provides a highly Pd-efficient strategy for designing high-performance semiconductor oxide sensors for rapid and reliable hydrogen leak detection.
