Synergistic Catalysis for Dual Enhancement of Synthesis and Hydrogen Storage in NaAlH4 Using a Metallic Al-Ti-Ce Precursor

Yingjue Chen,Yan Chu,Shiwei Fang,Xiaoqi Zhang,Jie Zheng,Wubin Du,Wengang Cui,Lingchao Zhang,Xin Zhang,Yaxiong Yang,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan

NaAlH4 suffers from high kinetic barriers, causing high dehydrogenation temperatures, sluggish kinetics, poor reversibility, and low direct synthesis efficiency. Herein, a metallic Al−Ti−Ce alloy ribbon (Ti:Ce = 1:1, total 6 wt %) with a refined Al matrix (∼405 nm) and uniformly dispersed nanoscale Ti2Al20Ce and Al3Ti phases (200−360 nm) was fabricated by arc melting and melt-spinning. Used directly as the Al source, this ribbon enabled successful synthesis of NaAlH4 by ball-milling with NaH under 50 bar H2 for 36 h. The resulting composite delivered a dehydrogenation capacity of 4.73 wt % from 107.4 to 182.1 °C and a capacity retention of 91.98% over 15 cycles. The Ti−Ce synergy refines Al grains and disperses catalytic phases while also improving the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics of NaAlH4 and suppressing Al agglomeration, collectively ensuring high reactivity and sustained reversibility of the system. This work presents an effective design strategy for an integrated precursor that combines a bimetallic catalyst and an Al source, offering an alternative approach for optimizing the synthesis and hydrogen storage performance of the NaAlH4 system.

Fe/Ti Co-doping suppresses P2-O2 phase transition for stabilized Na2/3 Ni1/3 Mn2/3 O2 cathode

Qiwei Zhong,Yueyang Liu,Jiayu Song,Yuchao Cui,Haozhe Li,Li Zhao

Fe/Ti co-doping converts the P2 phase to the OP4 phase and suppresses the undesirable P2-O2 phase transition. • Fe/Ti co-doping breaks the Na + /vacancy ordering and improves sodium ion transport capability. • Ti doping can shorten the TM-O bonds and lengthen the Na-O bonds. P2-type Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 is regarded as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries owing to its high specific capacity and low cost. Nevertheless, its practical application is hindered by irreversible structural degradation and rapid capacity decay associated with the detrimental P2–O2 phase transition during deep Na + extraction. In this work, Fe and Ti are co-incorporated into Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 via a sol-gel method to enhance structural stability. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicates that Ti doping shortens TM–O bonds and enlarges Na + diffusion channels by increasing Na-O distances, thereby enhancing structural stability and Na + transport kinetics. In situ XRD analyses reveal that Fe/Ti co-doping regulates the phase transition pathway from the irreversible P2–O2 phase transition to a reversible P2–OP4 phase transition, effectively mitigating structural degradation during cycling. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that optimized Fe/Ti co-doping enhances the overall electrochemical performance. The optimized composition, Na 2/3 Ni 1/4 Fe 1/12 Mn 7/12 Ti 1/12 O 2 , exhibits excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 82.33% after 50 cycles at 0.2 C, and delivers a specific capacity of 61.43 mA h g −1 at a high rate of 5 C. This study demonstrates that the combination of sol-gel synthesis and co-doping engineering provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Phosphate-promoted synthesis of TS-1 thin crystals with Ti(OSi)2(OH)4 species for 1-hexene epoxidation

Jiaojiao Yu,Yi Zuo,Gudan Li,Bosong Zhang,Hong Yang,Xinyue Wang,Xinwen Guo

PO 4 3- assists the one-step synthesis of highly active TS-1 containing Ti-VI species. • PO 4 3- induces plate-like TS-1 morphology and creates hierarchical micropores. • Ti-VI is constructed by Ti-O-PO 4 x- intermediate from bonding of Ti-OH with PO 4 3- . • TS-MAP-0.2 doubles the activity for 1-hexene epoxidation than additive-free TS-1. Titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) is an efficient and green oxidation catalyst that has been employed in various industrial processes. In our previous work, a highly active TS-1 catalyst bearing Ti(OSi) 2 (OH) 4 (Ti-VI) was successfully prepared via post-treatment with alkaline solutions. Herein, a novel synthesis strategy is developed using monoammonium phosphate (MAP) as a regulator to fabricate thin TS-1 crystals with Ti-VI species, eliminating the complicated post-treatment operations. The study reveals that although the added phosphate anion (PO 4 3- ) is not incorporated into the MFI framework, it significantly affects the crystallization behavior of TS-1 during the synthesis. Essentially, PO 4 3- exerts two functions. First, it regulates the Ti species in the resulting TS-1 by forming Ti-O-PO 4 x - intermediates which not only promotes the formation of Ti-VI but also the construction of large micropores (0.7−0.8 nm) around Ti atoms in TS-1. Furthermore, PO 4 3- induces the formation of plate-like crystal morphology of TS-1. The obtained TS-1 catalyst exhibits remarkably enhanced catalytic performance in 1-hexene epoxidation, which is ascribed to the concurrent o ptimization of its intrinsic catalytic activity and mass transfer diffusion properties. Fluidization Synthesis of Near-Stoichiometric TiN Powder by Locking the Ti/N Ratio in a TiNCl Precursor via Dechlorination

Wenjun Ding,Maoqiao Xiang,Fen Yue,Qinghua Dong,Zhensui Lu,Yanyan Li,Zhifan Hao,Yafeng Yang,Qingshan Zhu

Titanium nitride (TiN) is a versatile ceramic material renowned for its high hardness, excellent electrical conductivity, and plasmonic effects, yet its performance is highly dependent on its stoichiometry ( x in TiN x ). The synthesis of near-stoichiometric TiN powder (0.98 ≤ x ≤ 1.01), which exhibits optimal properties, remains challenging due to a mismatch between mass transfer and reaction kinetics. Herein, we developed a novel fluidized-bed process involving the controlled formation and subsequent dechlorination of a stoichiometric TiNCl coating on seed particles, achieving a final stoichiometry of x = 0.99. The introduction of NH 3 was identified as a critical step for effectively reducing residual chlorine impurity. Furthermore, a self-exfoliation mechanism during the transformation from TiNCl to TiN was revealed. This precursor stoichiometry locking strategy, combined with a fluidized-bed process, not only achieves a 161-fold improvement in dechlorination efficiency over the fixed-bed system but also exhibits a high synthesis rate (∼13 g h −1 in a 30 mm-diameter reactor), demonstrating great promise for the scalable production of near-stoichiometric TiN powder.

Two-step carbothermal reduction-carburization synthesis of high-quality (Ti, W)C solid solution powders for high-performance cermets

Xiao-Dong Kang,Zhi-Gang Zhu,Guo-Hua Zhang

This study proposed a two-step carbothermal reduction-carburization method for preparing high-quality (Ti, W)C solid solution powders. Through separating the carbothermal reduction deoxygenation from the carburization and solid solution process, stepwise precise control was achieved. Using TiO 2 , WO 3 , and carbon black as raw materials, deoxygenation and most of the solid solution reactions were first completed at 1500 °C under a carbon-deficient condition. Subsequently, precise carbon supplementation was conducted, followed by final carburization and solid solution at 1550 °C. The resulting powders possessed excellent characteristics including elevated purity, fine grain size, homogeneous morphology, and optimal dispersibility. High-frequency spark plasma sintering (HF-SPS) was employed subsequently to fabricate (Ti, W)C-based cermets. A systematic elucidation of the reaction mechanisms in the two-step method was conducted, and the effects of W content on the powder characteristics as well as the microstructure and properties of cermets were explored. Results demonstrated that the grain size of the synthesized powders gradually decreased as W content increased, and (Ti 0.69 , W 0.31 )C showed the finest average grain size (0.38 ± 0.12 μm). Increasing W led to a decline in both hardness and fracture toughness ( K IC ) of cermets. Cermet sintered from (Ti 0.88 , W 0.12 )C powder demonstrated optimal mechanical properties, and possessed a hardness of 2030 ± 21 HV 30 and a K IC of 10.35 ± 0.31 MPa m 1/2 , achieving an excellent combination of hardness and toughness.

Synthesis of high-purity (Ti,V,Ta,Nb,Hf)(C,N) powder via two-step method and its densification

Bei-Chen Gao,Yu Tian,Run-Ping Liu,Yi-Xin Wang,Yang You,Wei-Ming Guo,Hua-Tay Lin

A two-step method including low-temperature pretreatment and high-temperature homogenization was developed to prepare high-purity (Ti 0.2 V 0.2 Ta 0.2 Nb 0.2 Hf 0.2 )(C 0.75 N 0.25 ) powder. In the first step, the reaction mixture was heated to 1450 ℃ to form intermediate carbonitride phases through carbothermal reduction-nitridation, and the second step at 1700 ℃ produced a single-phase high-entropy carbonitride. The powder prepared by single-step treatment at 1750 ℃ contained 2.28 wt% nitrogen and 0.18 wt% oxygen. In contrast, the two-step powder exhibited higher nitrogen content (2.45 wt%) and lower oxygen content (0.09 wt%), and the formation of a complete single-phase solid solution enabled accurate calculation of its composition (Ti 0.2 V 0.2 Ta 0.2 Nb 0.2 Hf 0.2 )(C 0.78 N 0.21 O 0.01 ). The ceramic prepared from the two-step powder achieved 99.8% relative density, with an average grain size of 4.58 ± 0.32 μm, a Vickers hardness of 22.73 ± 0.51 GPa, and a fracture toughness of 3.16 ± 0.30 MPa·m 1/2 , whereas the single-step ceramic reached only 86.5% relative density.

Band-bending engineering in Cu2ZnSnS4 photocathodes using a composite (Zn,Ti)O electron transport layer for solar water splitting

Siyuan Ren,Muhammad Abbas,Zhibin Xie,Zilin Lu,Jasim Yousaf,Muhammad Ishaq,Zhuanghao Zheng,Jun Zhao,Shuo Chen,Guangxing Liang

The development of efficient and stable photocathodes from earth-abundant materials is a critical challenge for photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production. While Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is a promising absorber due to its ideal bandgap and non-toxic constituents, its performance is plagued by severe interfacial recombination. This work addresses this limitation through the precise engineering of a zinc-titanium oxide (Zn,Ti)O electron transport layer (ETL) in Mo/CZTS/CdS/(Zn,Ti)O/Pt photocathodes. We systematically investigate the influence of atomic-layer-deposited (Zn,Ti)O on the heterojunction's microstructure, band alignment, and charge transfer kinetics. A suite of characterization studies reveals that a suitable ETL thickness forms a dense, conformal coating and establishes an optimal spike-like conduction band offset at the CdS/(Zn,Ti)O interface, which minimizes bulk and interfacial charge-transfer resistance. Consequently, the optimized photocathode achieves a remarkable photocurrent density of 29.2 mA cm−2 at 0 VRHE and a high half-cell solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (HC-STH) of 7.02%. This study demonstrates that fine control of composite ETLs is a powerful strategy to unlock the potential of CZTS and related earth-abundant absorbers for scalable solar fuel production.

Synergistic Ti/F Co-doping for Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathodes via Ti3+/Ti4+ Redox and Structural Stabilization

Shengrui Cui,Chengliang Lin,Fangfang Dong,Mingxu Duan,Mengqiu Li,Abdul Majid,Ayaulym Belgibayeva,Yongcheng Jin

As a promising high-voltage cathode material candidate for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), spinel-type LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) has attracted significant attention due to its high operating voltage (~4.7 V). However, its intrinsic structural instability and severe surfacial side reactions lead to poor cycling stability and rate capability. This study presents an innovative low-temperature calcination strategy to synthesize Ti/F co-doped LNMO (LNMO-TiF3-x) cathode materials, utilizing TiF3 as a dual-functional dopant. Both experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the introduced Ti3+/Ti4+ redox couple activates additional Mn-based capacity within the 4.2 V region, while contributing a minor yet measurable reversible capacity. Simultaneously, Ti/F co-doping strengthens the lattice through covalent bonding, effectively suppressing transition metal dissolution and synergistically enhancing cycling stability. Furthermore, Ti4+ doping expands the (111) lattice spacing, which facilitates Li+ diffusion kinetics and significantly enhances rate capabilities. The optimized LNMO-TiF3-4 exhibits outstanding performance, delivering 131.9 mAh g-1 at 10 C and maintaining 72.4% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 5 C. This work not only demonstrates the high electrochemical performance of LNMO-TiF3-x but also offers new insights into bulk-interface synergistic engineering for advanced high-voltage cathode materials.

Cost-Efficient Ti-V-Sn-Sb Chlorine-Evolving Electrodes Deposited by Liquid Plasma Spraying for Antibacterial and Wastewater Treatment

Zhang Yu,Zhou Ping,Liu Xiaomei,Liu Yi,Huang Jing,Wu Shuangjie,Saitoh Hidetoshi,Zhang Botao,Li Hua

Electrochemical chlorine evolution is a promising approach for antimicrobial and wastewater treatment. However, the large-scale applications of conventional electrodes are hindered by the high cost of precious metals and tedious thermal decomposition method. In this study, precious metal-free electrodes for chlorine evolution were fabricated via liquid plasma spraying technique using a Ti 0.35 V 0.35 Sn 0.25 Sb 0.05 feedstock solution with varying total metal concentration. Scanning electron microscopy combined with EDS elemental analysis showed that the coatings exhibited a loose and porous morphology, with Ti, V, Sn and Sb elements uniformly distributed throughout. X-ray diffraction analysis identified characteristic diffraction peaks corresponding to VO 2 , SnO 2 , Sb 2 O 5 and TiO 2 in the coatings. The electrocatalytic properties of the coatings were evaluated using multiple electrochemical techniques, and the electrode prepared using the 1.0 M feedstock solution demonstrated the best performance. Antimicrobial test showed that after 30-s electrolysis, the disinfection rates of simulated tap water against E. coli and S. aureus exceeded 88.1% and 96.8%, respectively, whereas for the 0.06 M NaCl solution, both pathogens were inactivated by over 99.9% within 15 s. Additionally, methylene blue degradation reached 98.4% after 45 min of electrolysis. This study provides a new strategy for producing low-cost chlorine-evolving electrodes with potential application in antibacterial and wastewater treatment.

Trace Al/Ti co-doping in P2-type layered oxide cathodes toward ultra-stable and fast sodium-ion storage

JiaRui Fu,Chuan Wang,Shuai Jiang,Bing Li,Yujue Wang,Ming Lei,Qian Zhao

An Al/Ti dual-doping strategy constructs a P2-type layered oxide with synergistic dual-ion modification. • Al/Ti co-doping enlarges the c-axis spacing and stabilises the layered oxygen framework. • The cathode retains 90.55% of its capacity after 500 cycles at 100 mA g −1 . • The hard carbon full cell delivers good rate capability and long-term cycling stability. Layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) often suffer from structural degradation and increased interfacial resistance during prolonged cycling. In this research, an Al/Ti dual-doping synergistic strategy is employed on P2-type Na 0.8 Al 0.02 Ti 0.02 (Ni 0.4 Mn 0.6 ) 0.96 O 2 (NNATM) to simultaneously regulate both the bulk lattice structure and interfacial chemical behavior. Al/Ti co-doping enlarges the c-axis spacing, facilitating Na + migration, while the strengthened Al/Ti-O and TM-O bonding interactions stabilize the layered framework and improve interfacial stability during cycling. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy characterizations confirm a 40% reduction in charge-transport resistance, verifying the promoted interfacial charge conduction capability of the electrode. The NNATM cathode exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance: it delivers a reversible specific capacity of 111 mAh g −1 at 0.1C, and a reversible capacity retention of 90.55% is achieved after 500 cycles at 100 mA g −1 . The investigation provides a reliable method to enhance the long-term stability and reversibility of SIBs cathode. Download: Download high-res image (240KB) Download: Download full-size image

Synergistically Enhancing Tribological Properties, Oxidation Resistance and Anti-Corrosion of Ti-MAO Coatings via h-BN/SiC Co-doping

Jia Wang,Lin Gao,Chuanyao Dong,Kan Zhang

To enhance the service performance of titanium alloys for demanding high-end equipment applications, an h-BN/SiC-Ti-MAO composite coating was fabricated on Ti6Al4V via one-step micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Optimizing the SiC additive concentration offers an effective way to improve the overall performance of the composite coating in mechanical, tribological, oxidation resistance and anti-corrosion properties. The research results show that the coating prepared with 4 g/L SiC yielded superior multifunctional properties. It possessed a dense microstructure with the lowest porosity (6.45%), high hardness (712 HV) and excellent adhesion. This coating maintained a low friction coefficient of approximately 0.20 from RT to 5 0 0 ∘ C and exhibited the best oxidation resistance at 6 0 0 ∘ C, with a parabolic rate constant ( K P ) of 3 . 3 3 × 1 0 − 4 . Electrochemical tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution further confirmed its optimal anti-corrosion, showing the lowest corrosion current density ( 3 . 3 2 5 × 1 0 − 9 A/cm 2 ) . In contrast, insufficient SiC concentration results in limited performance improvement of the composite coating, whereas excessive concentration introduces microstructural defects, ultimately degrading the overall performance. This study demonstrates that optimized h-BN/SiC co-doping represents an effective strategy for developing high-performance MAO protective coatings on titanium alloys.
