A Z-scheme BiOBr/COF-1 heterojunction was synthesized via a solvothermal method. • The catalyst exhibited enhanced visible-light absorption and charge separation. • A mechanism for the simultaneous removal of RhB and Cr(VI) was revealed. The construction of heterojunctions is commonly employed to boost the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers and the overall photocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel Z -scheme BiOBr/COF-1 heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the effective formation of the heterojunction, which exhibited enhanced visible-light absorption and improved separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Compared with pristine COF-1 and BiOBr, the optimized BiOBr/COF-1 composite (BC-1) demonstrated superior photocatalytic activity for both rhodamine B (RhB) degradation and Cr(VI) reduction. Notably, the reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) was significantly enhanced in a coexisting system of RhB and Cr(VI). In addition, BiOBr/COF-1 exhibited good structural stability over multiple reaction cycles. This work provides an effective strategy for designing Z -scheme photocatalysts to treat complex wastewater containing organic and heavy metal pollutants. Constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions represents a highly effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (PCN) modulated NiFe-LDH Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst (NiFe-LDH/PCN) was fabricated by hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained NiFe-LDH/PCN was assessed by degrading organic dye Congo red under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the obtained NiFe-LDH/PCN exhibited exceptional photocatalytic performance, with the optimal sample NiFe-LDH/PCN-3 achieving a 95% CR degradation rate within 90 min. The photocatalytic efficiency was 17 times higher than that of pristine PCN and 4.3 times higher than that of NiFe-LDH alone. The significant enhancement in photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, facilitated by the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction between NiFe-LDH and PCN. The involvement of active species, such as superoxide radicals (·O₂⁻), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), and photogenerated holes (h⁺), was confirmed during the degradation process. The present study provides valuable insights into the design of efficient photocatalysts for environmental applications and highlights the potential of Z-scheme heterojunctions to significantly boost photocatalytic performance.

Waste-wood derived biochar was one of potential cocatalysts for catalyst construction, while relevant reports were scarce due to its irregularity, impeded connection properties, etc. necessitating further exploration. In this work, a waste wood-derived tungsten trioxide (WO 3 )/zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 , ZIS)/biochar (BC) ternary heterojunction was fabricated for interfacial photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution via a two-step hydrothermal method. Under visible light irradiation, the WO 3 /ZIS/BC achieved a H 2 evolution rate of 4.82 mmol/g/h, which was 9.4 and 2.2 times higher than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 and ZIS/WO 3 material. Based on DFT calculations and ESR analyses, the electrons in composite were transferred from WO 3 to ZIS and from BC to ZIS, confirming the function of a dual Z -scheme system. Herein, the biochar was acted as both a structural supporter and an electron reservoir, enhancing light absorption, expanding charge-transfer regions, and improving stability of the ternary composite. This work provides a robust theoretical foundation and technique support for enhancing wood waste recyclability and advancing renewable energy transition from biomass to green hydrogen.

In addition to solar cell, photocatalysis is an alternative way for the direct utilization of the clean and sustainable solar energy. Currently, the core challenge in photocatalysis is the efficiency of the separation and transfer of the photogenerated electrons (e⁻) and holes (h⁺) in photocatalysts. Herein, continuous tuning of ZnCdS-CeO2 heterostructures via a seed-mediated growth approach yielded two typical hybrid structures: ZnCdS-CeO2 core-satellite (ZCSC I) and ZnCdS@CeO2 core-shell (ZCSC II) structures. Leveraging the Janus configuration of ZCSC I structure, a marked improvement in charge separation and transfer efficiency was observed in photocurrent and transient fluorescence tests. This enhancement should be due to the electron “sink effect” in ZCSC I structure as the spatial separation of the ZnCdS (ZCS) and CeO2 domains. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of the heterostructures was evaluated using the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) as a model reaction. Consistent with the above tests, the ZCSC I showed the highest MB degradation rate of 91% within 60 minutes. From the calculated kinetic rate constants (k values), the k value of ZCSC I structure is 4, 2.1, and 1.5 times higher than those of CeO2, ZCS, and ZCSC II structure, respectively. Through radical trapping experiments, the ZnCdS-CeO2 heterostructures were identified as Z-scheme heterojunction. This work provides solid mechanistic understanding and valuable insights for improving the catalytic efficiency of hybrid photocatalysts, which is helpful for the rational design and precise control of the hybrid photocatalysts with high catalytic efficiency and would assist their applications in diverse catalytic reactions.

Photocatalysis is a green and efficient technology for degrading organic pollutants. However, its development is restricted by the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In this study, double-Z-type BiVO 4 /AgBr/Ag 2 MoO 4 ternary photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a one-step precipitation method at room temperature, and their photocatalytic performance for degrading rhodamine B (RhB) was investigated. The composition and microstructure of the photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), cold field scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), specific surface area testing, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicate that the optical properties of the photocatalysts are good. Under visible light irradiation, the BiVO 4 /AgBr/Ag 2 MoO 4 photocatalyst with Ag 2 MoO 4 mass fraction of 12% achieved a degradation rate > 99% within 12 min, with degradation rates 260.5, 6.1, and 161.7 times that of pure BiVO 4 , AgBr, and Ag 2 MoO 4 , respectively. In addition, holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2− ) are the main active species, and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) also have a certain influence during the photocatalysis process, according to the active species capture experiments. This study demonstrates that the ternary photocatalyst has the potential to efficiently degrade organic pollutants under sunlight.

The elaborate design of efficient strategy to facilitate interfacial and spatial charge separation is a prospective strategy for the enhancement of photodegradation activity. Herein, the oxygen vacancies modified hierarchical hollow tubular Bi 2 WO 6 /In 2 O 3 heterostructure was synthesized via an in situ self-assembly method using MIL-68(In) as precursors and structural component, which can modulate charge redistribution for effective photocatalytic norfloxacin degradation (90.8%) in 50 min. The XRD , ESR , HRTEM , and XPS characterizations significantly prove the existence of oxygen vacancies and the successful construction of Bi 2 WO 6 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction. Furthermore, the optimal BWO/In 2 O 3 -25 catalyst exhibits excellent degradation efficiency of NOR in practical water matrices and superior decomposition performances of tetracycline (82.1%), ciprofloxacin (82.4%), levofloxacin (88.2%), methyl orange (86.3%), methylene blue (93.2%), and rhodamine B (94.7%). Importantly, the toxicity of NOR can be ignored after the degradation. Capture experiments and DFT calculations collaboratively demonstrate the Z-scheme charge migration mechanism. This study presents a novel opinion for rational developing oxygen vacancies modified Z-scheme heterojunction with unique spatial and interfacial charge flow steering via a facile strategy.

Designing catalysts with suitable valence conduction band positions to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) with moderate redox capacity is to achieve efficient photocatalytic biomass-selective value-added oxidation. This protocol addresses the issue by tuning material structural defects, altering the surface electronic structure, and ultimately enhancing the raw material’s performance. Here, an appropriate amount of one - dimensional nanorods α -MnO 2 adjusted material structural defects, increased the adsorbed oxygen (O ads )/lattice oxygen (O latt ) and Mn 3+ ratios, and served as an electron transport conduit, facilitating O₂ activation to generate ROS. The Cd 1.7 In 2 S 4.7 solid solution enables the optimal valence band position by adjusting the Cd 2+ : In 3+ ratio, thus selectively oxidizing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dicarbonylfuran (DFF). In situ XPS revealed that photogenerated electrons in Cd 1.7 In 2 S 4.7 quickly transferred to the conduction band of α -MnO 2 , and photogenerated holes from α -MnO 2 moved to the valence band of Cd 1.7 In 2 S 4.7 . This significantly enhanced the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers at the interface. The optimal sample achieved 56% conversion of HMF and 72% selectivity of DFF under simulated sunlight. This protocol provides a new approach for the establishment of electron transport channel structures based on α -MnO 2 constructs and value-added biomass photocatalytic conversion under simulated sunlight.

Simultaneous achievement of green hydrogen production and pollutant removal is an attractive approach for mitigating energy scarcity and environmental pollution. This work successfully constructed an all-solid-state CdZnS/CNT/CuCo 2 S 4 Z-scheme heterojunction via a combined hydrothermal and solvent evaporation approach, enabling highly efficient bifunctional photocatalytic performance in hydrogen production and tetracycline removal. Benefiting from visible light excitation, the tailored CdZnS/CNT/CuCo 2 S 4 heterostructure delivered an outstanding photocatalytic H 2 generation activity, as high as 10.29 mmol g −1 h −1 . The catalytic performance was 3.3 times superior to pristine CdZnS. Moreover, it achieved 92.3% degradation of tetracycline within 30 min. The boosted photocatalytic performance originates from the Z-type charge transmission pathway supported by CNT electron bridges, significantly promoting carrier separation and transport. Excited electrons in CdZnS reduce water to produce hydrogen, while the holes in CuCo 2 S 4 degrade tetracycline. This study paves a rational pathway for the fabrication of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts that employ carbon nanotubes as electron mediators.

This study successfully constructed a direct Z-scheme TP-WO3 heterojunction photocatalytic system via an in situ compositing strategy for the photoassisted Fenton degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride in aqueous environments. The composite formed an intimate interfacial contact between TP and WO3, effectively facilitating the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Experiments demonstrated that TP-WO3(0.7) achieved a degradation efficiency of 92.34% for 10 ppm tetracycline within 75 min under visible light irradiation with H2O2 assistance, with a reaction rate constant (2.731 × 10–2 min–1) significantly higher than those of the individual components. Radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed that h+, •OH, and •O2– were the main active species. This study provides a feasible design strategy and experimental basis for developing efficient and stable organic–inorganic Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic materials.

CCN is constructed in a single step via supramolecular self-assembly. • CCN/AP-175 eliminates 96.04% of CTC within 60 min under visible light. • The catalyst exhibits anti-interference capability and robust cyclic stability. • Honeycomb porosity synergizes with the Z-scheme for boosted performance. Conventional g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts are limited in degrading antibiotics and other micropollutants due to rapid recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Herein, a highly porous carbon-doped polymeric carbon nitride (CCN) with an super-porous architecture was synthesized via the self-assembly of melamine, cyanuric acid, and barbituric acid, followed by in situ anchoring of Ag 3 PO 4 nanoparticles onto the CCN framework through an ion-exchange precipitation method, yielding a hierarchical porous CCN/ Ag 3 PO 4 (CCN/AP) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst. The optimized CCN/AP-175 achieved 96.04% removal of chlortetracycline (CTC) under visible-light irradiation for 60 min, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant 1.56, 2.23, and 1.55 times higher than those of pristine CCN, pure Ag 3 PO 4 , and conventional nonporous g-C 3 N 4 /Ag 3 PO 4 (CN/AP), respectively. BET, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses revealed that the hierarchical porosity combined with the Z-scheme heterojunction not only significantly enhanced the specific surface area but also facilitated effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. Reactive species trapping experiments and electron spin resonance confirmed that photogenerated holes (h⁺) play a dominant role in CTC degradation. Furthermore, UV–vis DRS and Mott–Schottky measurements corroborated the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. Systematic studies of catalyst dosage, initial CTC concentration, solution pH, and coexisting anions demonstrated sustained high degradation performance under diverse conditions. Notably, after four consecutive cycles, the catalyst maintained over 80% removal efficiency with no significant structural deterioration, highlighting its excellent stability. This work offers a viable strategy for designing high-performance porous photocatalysts for practical antibiotic remediation. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation hold great promise for the remediation of organic wastewater. To overcome the limitation of narrow light utilization, sluggish PMS activation, and weak synergy between photocatalysis and PMS activation, the rational integration of transition-metal-mediated PMS activation with heterostructure engineering under light provides an efficient pathway for accelerating internal electric field construction and enhancing pollutant degradation. Herein, a C-LaFeO 3 anchored Co-doped g-C 3 N 4 (C-LFO/Co-CN) catalyst was synthesized via a multi-step in situ calcination strategy. When the mass ratio of C-LFO: Co: CN was optimized to 10:1:100, the C-LFO/Co-CN catalyst exhibited optimal photo-Fenton-like synergistic performance, achieving an initial 30-minute degradation rate 5.8 times higher than that under visible light alone. It was revealed that the Co sites directly interact with PMS to form high-valent cobalt (Co(IV) = O). Furthermore, the reconstruction of the internal electric field establishes a Z -scheme heterojunction. This configuration drives the directional migration of photogenerated electrons under illumination, promoting the direct involvement of photogenerated holes from the C-LFO valence band in the degradation of NOR. The influx of photogenerated electrons in Co-CN facilitates the reduction of Co valence states, while in C-LFO, the Fe sites further participate in the formation of a Co Fe valence state cycling system under the activation of PMS. These synergistic dual-metal redox cycles ultimately promote the highly efficient degradation of NOR in the (C-LFO/Co-CN)-PMS-Vis system. This study provides new mechanistic insights and theoretical guidance for efficient photocatalysis–PMS synergistic catalysts for wastewater treatment.
