The Zn/MnO2battery is a promising energy storage system, owing to its high energy density and low cost, but due to the dissolution of the cathode material, its cycle life is limited, which hinders its further development. Therefore, we introduced agar as a microskin for a MnO2electrode to improve its cycle life and optimize other electrochemical properties. The results showed that the agar-coating layer improved the wettability of the electrode material, thereby promoting the diffusion rate of Zn2+and reducing the interface impedance of the MnO2electrode material. Therefore, the Zn/MnO2battery exhibited outstanding rate performance. In addition, the agar-coating layer promoted the reversibility of the MnO2/Mn2+reaction and acted as a colloidal physical barrier to prevent the dissolution of Mn2+, so that the Zn/MnO2battery had a high specific capacity and exhibited excellent cycle stability.

Oxygen vacancies (OVs) play a critical role in enhancing the catalytic performance of transition-metal oxides in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, the effect of OVs on the activation of different persulfates, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS), is still not well understood. Here, we employ ultrasonic defect engineering to adjust the OV content of α-MnO2 and systematically benchmark its activation of PMS and PDS. XPS, EPR, and electrochemical analyses revealed that the ultrasound-treated α-MnO2 exhibited a significantly increased proportion of Mn(III) and a markedly higher OV concentration, thereby creating densely populated redox-active sites for persulfate adsorption and electron transfer. Mechanistic investigations indicated that in the PMS system, the oxidation pathway was closely associated with OVs: at low OV densities, radical oxidation (SO4˙−/˙OH) predominates, whereas at high OV densities, a non-radical route dominated by singlet oxygen (1O2) prevails. In contrast, the oxidation pathway in the PDS system exhibited a weak correlation with OV content, implicating distinct adsorption/activation motifs for PMS versus PDS on α-MnO2. Radical scavenging experiments and EPR analyses provided supportive, semi-quantitative evidence for these mechanistic trends, within the acknowledged limitations of current ROS identification methods. Collectively, this work establishes a clear structure–reactivity correlation and provides a defect-engineering blueprint for tailoring targeted reactive oxygen species in water purification applications.

MnO 2 is a promising catalyst for oxygen reduction and metal–air batteries due to the natural abundance, low cost and nontoxicity. Improving its activity is an important challenge for its large-scale commercialization. Defect engineering and heteroatom doping are the most effective means and can be easily operated through plasma treatment at different atmospheres. In this work, defects on MnO 2 are manufactured via rapid plasma treatment at Ar atmosphere while both defects and N-doping are simultaneously fabricated at N 2 atmosphere. N–MnO 2 exhibits a greatly enhanced ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.84 V, a limiting current density of 6.7 mA cm −2 and the number of transferred electrons of 3.9. In neutral Mg-air battery, N–MnO 2 -based battery exhibits a max power density of 124.3 mW cm −2 at a current density of 255.4 mA cm −2 and excellent stability under different working condition. These superior performances of N–MnO 2 to Ar–MnO 2 and pristine α -MnO 2 demonstrate that the defects and N-doping by plasma treatment at N 2 atmosphere significantly enhance the oxygen reduction activity. This work reveals the relationship between microstructure and oxygen reduction reaction and supplies a new idea for the developing economical and efficient oxygen reduction reaction catalysts for metal–air batteries. The practical application of manganese-based cathode materials in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is hindered by their intrinsically low electrical conductivity and inadequate cycling stability. In this work, a MoO 3 @α-MnO 2 heterostructure was engineered through a self-assembly strategy, and its electrochemical performance as an AZIB cathode was systematically evaluated. The designed heterostructure synergistically integrates the beneficial properties of both phases, thereby simultaneously improving electronic conductivity and structural robustness. One-dimensional (1D) MoO 3 nanoribbons function not only as a structural template and mechanical support but also as a morphology-directing template, effectively optimizing the electronic interaction at the heterointerface and refining the particle size of α-MnO 2 , while their mechanically rigid framework alleviates cathode volume expansion during cycling. Furthermore, strong interfacial electronic interaction and charge redistribution at the heterointerface promote Zn 2+ diffusion kinetics and accelerate redox reaction rates. When employed as a cathode, the MoO 3 @α-MnO 2 composite delivers a high discharge specific capacity of 290.55 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 and retains 209.71 mAh g −1 after 150 cycles, demonstrating superior cycling stability. Excellent capacity recovery is also observed in rate capability tests, highlighting its reversible electrochemical behavior. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further corroborate the enhanced electrochemical performance of the heterostructure, while in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), along with ex-situ XRD and XPS analyses, elucidate the dynamic structural evolution and underlying charge storage mechanism. This study presents a promising strategy for designing high-performance manganese-based cathodes for advanced AZIBs.

Phosphorus-doped α-manganese dioxide cathode material was successfully synthesized. • P-α-MnO 2 possesses excellent electrochemical performance. • P doping can enhance structural stability of the α-MnO 2 phase. MnO 2 is recognized as a highly competitive cathode candidate for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) thanks to its low fabrication cost and considerable reversible capacity. However, MnO 2 suffers from severe manganese dissolution and structural phase transitions during cycling, leading to crystalline phase instability and thus severely limiting further performance enhancement of AZIBs. Herein, we successfully construct Phosphorus‑incorporated α‑MnO 2 (P-α-MnO 2 ) via an ion doping strategy and evaluate its electrochemical performance in AZIBs. PMO-2 delivers a peak capacity of 440.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 20 cycles and sustains 89% capacity (192–170.8 mAh g −1 ) upon 1500 cycles at 1.5 A g −1 , exhibiting better retention compared with pristine α-MnO 2 that maintains merely 49.6% (159–78.9 mAh g −1 ). Combined structural characterizations and DFT calculations indicate that the boosted performance of P-α-MnO 2 stems from phosphorus doping strengthening the crystalline stability of α-MnO 2 . It can substantially cut down Zn 2+ adsorption energy as well as ion‑migration barriers, which alleviates lattice‑channel destruction caused by Zn 2+ insertion‑extraction and preserves the tunnel‑type crystal framework of α‑MnO 2 throughout charge‑discharge operations. This work provides important theoretical foundations and design strategies for the further development of low-cost, high-stability, and high-energy-density manganese-based cathode materials. Engineering oxygen vacancies in α-MnO 2 represents an effective strategy for generating active oxygen species to enhance catalytic performance in HCHO oxidation. In this study, rod-like α-MnO 2 was synthesized via an in situ redox reaction between potassium permanganate (KMnO 4 ) and methanol, followed by modulation of surface oxygen vacancies through the adjustment of H 2 O 2 etching time. Etching duration critically governed catalytic enhancement, with α-MnO 2 -E-2 (2 h etching) exhibiting exceptional activity, robust stability and complete HCHO conversion at 60 °C. Characterization revealed oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface could be effectively regulated by modifying the H 2 O 2 etching time. Significantly, α-MnO 2 -E-2 demonstrated the highest (Mn 2+ + Mn 3+ )/Mn total ratio and lowest average oxidation state (AOS), directly correlating with maximized oxygen vacancy formation. The introduction of oxygen vacancies facilitated superior oxygen mobility and activation, thereby accelerating HCHO oxidation. In situ DRIFTS analysis further confirmed that only formate species were observed as intermediates on α-MnO 2 -E-2, demonstrating that H 2 O 2 etching simplified the reaction pathway to HCHO → HCOO − → H 2 O + CO 2 .

Dumbbell-shaped α-MnO 2 hollow microspheres were synthesized via surface chemical oxidation of MnCO 3 microspheres using KMnO 4 , followed by removal of the residual MnCO 3 template with HCl. Subsequently, a series of Ag-modified α-MnO 2 catalysts with nominal loadings of m % Ag ( m = 0.05, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5) were prepared through a redox etching process using H 2 O 2 . The strong interaction between highly dispersed Ag and the α-MnO 2 support was found to enhance the low-temperature reducibility and generate abundant active oxygen species. Furthermore, the presence of Ag increased the concentrations of Mn 2+ and Mn 3+ species, thereby facilitating the formation of oxygen vacancies. Simultaneously, the dynamic redox cycles between Ag + /Ag and Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ significantly improved oxygen mobility within the catalyst. These synergistic effects collectively contributed to the outstanding catalytic performance of the 0.3% Ag/α-MnO 2 , which achieved 75.8% HCHO conversion at 30 °C and reached complete conversion at 50 °C. In situ DRIFTS studies revealed that the addition of Ag into α-MnO 2 promoted the carbonate species qulickly converted into CO 2 and H 2 O. Both α-MnO 2 and 0.3% Ag/α-MnO 2 catalyst followed a similar reaction pathway of HCHO → DOM → HCOOH → H 2 CO 3 → CO 2 + H 2 O.

The use of semiconductor photocatalysts to generate electrons with efficient reducing capability for organic photoreduction synthesis and the removal of harmful substances has become a hotspot in the field of green chemistry research. In this work, α-MnO2 nanocubes and α-MnO2@MnIn2S4 hybrid photocatalysts with a core–shell structure were synthesized successively by a two-step method. XRD and XPS verified the coexistence of the two substances (α-MnO2 and MnIn2S4) in hybrid systems. According to the SEM and TEM characterization, it is clearly seen that MnIn2S4 nanosheets grow on α-MnO2 nanocubes to form a hierarchical structure. Furthermore, HRTEM showed that the interface contact between α-MnO2 and MnIn2S4 resulted in an atomically defined junction. The photocatalytic performance of the composite catalyst was evaluated by reducing 4-nitroaniline to 4-phenylenediamine and Cr(VI) to Cr(III), respectively. The results show that the catalytic activity of the composite material is effectively improved compared to that of the single components. The Z-scheme electron transport mechanism was proved by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, valence band XPS, energy band structure calculation and active species detection experiments. The constructed Z-scheme hierarchical α-MnO2@MnIn2S4 system with an atomically defined junction can improve the redox performance of semiconductors for organic synthesis and environmental remediation.

In this study, a series of coconut shell biochars (CSB) with different pyrolysis temperature were prepared and incorporated with α-MnO 2 for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation in water through activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The results showed that with the assistance of CSB, α-MnO 2 /CSB exhibited superior catalytic activity over pristine α-MnO 2 , in which CSB played multiple roles in the composite. Basically, CSB could effectively improve the dispersion and expose more active sites of α-MnO 2 . Besides, CSB could build solid interactions with α-MnO 2 and boost the electron transferring rate between catalyst, PMS and BPA. Moreover, α-MnO 2 and CSB were both enrolled in the generation of radical and non-radical species for BPA degradation. Having multiple active species, the α-MnO 2 /CSB composite could maintain high catalytic performance under a wide pH range with good reusability and adaptability. The existence of both radical and non-radical pathways was further verified through identifying the BPA degradation intermediates. This study provides a new insight for the design of novel composite catalyst for water decontamination using biochar as a multifunctional participant.

Expanding the stable voltage window and specific capacitance of supercapacitor electrode materials remains a key scientific challenge due to the low energy density of supercapacitors. In this study, starting from the problem of low specific capacitance caused by the limited electron transfer rate due to the low conductivity of MnO 2 , a simple and economical hydrothermal method was used to doping different contents of Nb 5+ ions, which replaced some Mn 4+ ions in the α-MnO 2 lattice, thereby causing certain changes in the charge density and band structure of α-MnO 2 , and effectively improving its conductivity. In addition, Nb 5+ -doped α-MnO 2 effectively alters its morphology and surface area, providing a large surface area for ion and electron transport. The optimized Nb-MnO 2 electrode has a voltage window widened from 0.8 V to 1.2 V in a 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte, with a specific capacitance of 587 F/g with in the 1.2 V wide voltage window, while the undoped MnO 2 has a specific capacitance of only 131 F/g. A 2 V asymmetric supercapacitor is constructed with activated carbon AC as the negative electrode, providing a high energy density of 57 Wh/kg at a power density of 1010 W/kg in a 3 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, at a current density of 5 A/g, the capacitance retention rate of 84.85% was maintained after 5000 charge–discharge cycles. This work is a valuable foundation for the future exploration of wide voltage window and high-performance aqueous electrolyte asymmetric supercapacitors.

The exploration of non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) with high activity and excellent stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is significant to develop the fuel cells and metal-air batteries (MABs) for large-scale applications. Heterointerface engineering is deemed as a prospective strategy to improve the ORR activity by modulating the inner electronic structure and enhancing the surface properties. Herein, the uniformly dispersed MnCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles on α-MnO 2 nanotubes were fabricated via a two-step route, and the nanoparticle size was regulated at different calcination temperatures to obtain MnCo 2 O 4 /α-MnO 2 catalysts (MCM-T, T = 450 ℃, 600 ℃, 750 ℃, 900 ℃). Benefiting from the large specific surface area, hierarchical porous structure and high ratio of (Mn 3+ +Mn 4+ )/Mn 2+ , the MCM-450 catalyst exhibits superior ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.78 V ( vs . RHE) and remarkable stability in 0.1 M KOH solution. Correspondingly, an impressive specific capacity (875.6 mAh g −1 ), a high discharge plateau (1.37 V) and a noticeable peak power density (151.1 mW cm −2 ) are achieved in MCM-450-based liquid aluminum-air batteries (LAABs), surpassing the performance of the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst (601.0 mAh g −1 , 1.31 V, and 128.2 mW cm −2 ). This work provides a new strategy on developing transition metal oxides (TMOs) catalysts and endows an opportunity for efficient sustainable energy storage.

In order to address the issue of air pollution caused by the volatilization of VOCs in oilfield mud storage tanks and further reduce the energy consumption associated with traditional thermal oxidation technology, this study employs a photothermal synergistic catalytic oxidation method for the treatment of oilfield VOCs. A series of Ni/α-MnO 2 catalysts doped with varying nickel contents were synthesized via the hydrothermal method using transition metals, with propane selected as the representative pollutant. The incorporation of nickel enhances the adsorption capacity of O 2 to a certain extent. Simultaneously, it increases the competitive adsorption intensity of O 2 in the presence of coexisting H 2 O and O 2 , thereby exhibiting superior catalytic oxidation performance for propane. Compared to the single-component α-MnO 2 material (T 90 = 228 °C), the 40 %Ni/α-MnO 2 composite catalytic material showed excellent degradation ability for propane (T 90 = 206 °C) and good long-term stability. Furthermore, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a plausible mechanism for propane removal was proposed. Consequently, this study offers novel insights into the design and synthesis of efficient catalysts and the degradation of VOCs.
