In low-temperature, high-humidity environments, the condensation of water vapor within microstructures can initiate a detrimental cycle of hydrophobic failure, high-adhesion ice formation, and microstructural degradation, thereby limiting the practical application of superhydrophobic coatings in anti-icing and de-icing technologies. Therefore, enhancing the hydrophobic stability and mechanical durability of these coatings under such conditions is imperative. This study presents a novel approach where rigid Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are encapsulated within porous diatomaceous earth (DME) and combined with high-adhesion acrylic resin (AR), resulting in a superhydrophobic photothermal coating that possesses both active and passive de-icing capabilities, fabricated through a straightforward one-step spraying technique. Nanosized Fe 3 O 4 particles, modified for hydrophobicity and smaller than the critical nucleation radius, are densely packed within the DME micropores, forming a micro-nano structured coating with a contact angle of 160.1° and a rolling angle of 2.1°. This dense nanoparticle distribution facilitates preferential nucleation of ice crystal nuclei at the gas–liquid interface, rapidly leading to the formation of a robust and uniform ice shell, which effectively reduces the ice-solid contact area, resulting in loose ice droplets that initiate melting within 18 s. Additionally, the self-removal of condensed droplets from the surface enhances the water repellency and ice-phobic performance in low-temperature and high-humidity environments. The protection afforded by the DME microstructure and the releasable action of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles allows the coating to maintain its superhydrophobic characteristics even after exposure to sandpaper abrasion, repeated de-icing, sand impact, and immersion in acid-base solutions. Thus, this robust and durable superhydrophobic photothermal coating, integrating active and passive de-icing functionalities, demonstrates substantial potential for application across various engineering domains.

Icing is a natural phenomenon, and it is unavoidable, leading to severe economic issues and endangering life safety, especially icing over the aircraft fuselage. Hence, it is highly desirable to adopt effective method to address it. Wherein, the construction and modification of hydrophobic coating is a promising way. In this study, the aluminum-based photothermal/electrothermal composite hydrophobic coating with excellent performance was fabricated by facile spraying of epoxy resin, graphene, polydimethylsiloxane and gaseous nano-silica over etching Al. This coating displayed excellent hydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of 137.4°, which effectively delayed the freezing time of droplets on the cold platform at −10 °C to 360 s. Notably, the superior electrothermal performance enabled the temperature to reach to ca. 80 °C at the voltage of only 1.8 V, melting the ice particle in 164 s and the ice layer with 3 mm thickness in 360 s under the voltage of 1.5 V. Besides, at 1 sunlight intensity, the photothermal effect realized the surface temperature of ca. 45 °C, and the ice layer with 3 mm thickness was melted within 460 s. The multi-effect deicing coating also exhibited excellent photothermal/electrothermal stability and self-cleaning ability. These findings raise new possibilities for the design and development of metal substrate anti-icing/deicing functional coating material.

Photothermal hydrophobic coatings are considered as a promising passive anti-/deicing strategy, but their expensive manufacturing process has hindered their large-scale commercial application. Herein, we have constructed a double-shell n-Eicosane@TiO 2 @CuS phase change microcapsules in a facile approach. The microcapsule exhibits latent heat of 127.8 J/g, and the fluctuation of phase transition temperature and enthalpy in 200 DSC cycles is negligible. The microcapsule shows a strong absorption in the whole solar spectrum , owing to the coupling effect of the flower-like superstructure and localized surface plasmon resonance effect of CuS shell. Liquid marbles are spontaneously formed owing to the large surface roughness and superhydrophobic character of the microcapsule. The microcapsule-based coating surface reveals efficient anti-/deicing performance under low-temperature condition. Our work not only provides a novel approach for the design of high-performance microcapsules but also offers an effective strategy for photothermal anti-/deicing applications.

Ice accretion is detrimental for the safety of transmission lines, aircraft, and buildings, which may also result in economic loss. In this study, a thin polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating on the aluminum substrate was fabricated by electrostatic attraction self-assembly technique and proposed for large-scale deicing application. The shear-force F i c e analysis on deicing and related ice adhesion is conducted while interfacial toughness between solid-ice interfaces was also measured. Moreover, the surface morphology, wettability of the PTFE coated aluminum plate was also characterized. It was observed that the critical bonded length L c between ice and PTFE coated surface is about 2.85 cm. When the bonded length L was higher than this value, the shear-force of dislodging ice could stay constant at about 50 N for the first deicing cycle. From the second deicing cycle, the constant shear-force is increased to 70 N and kept constant for at least ten cycles. Meanwhile, the surface roughness and water contact angle kept on increasing along with the loss of PTFE nanoparticles during icing-deicing cycles. Ultimately, An ice layer with the size of 98 cm × 96 cm×1 cm (L × w×h) was developed on the surface of PTFE coated aluminum substrate for the demonstration of its fracture and falling off under ice’s weight.

Realizing icephobic surfaces with low ice adhesion and durability continues to be fascinating as well as challenging. Herein, a norbornene-based fluorinated polymer (NFP) with high flexibility and high tensile strength is designed and fabricated using a fluorinated side chain and a norbornene backbone, displaying low ice shear strength less than 20 kPa and excellent durability. Experimental and theoretical analyses show that the flexibility of the polymer chains and the synergistic macromolecular aggregation of the fluorinated side groups and the norbornene backbone play key roles in the excellent surface icephobic properties of the NFP films. Moreover, we also develop a facile approach to the design of durable icephobic slippery surfaces, which possess remarkable icephobic performance. This study not only sheds light on the relationship between the polymer molecular structure and surface icephobic properties but also provides a new avenue to conveniently realize anti-icing coatings.

Superhydrophobic surface (SHS) has attracted tremendous scientific interests in anti/de-icing due to its extremely low water affinity. However, poor durability and scalability have greatly hindered its applications; besides, study of the ice adhesion on SHS is not sufficient. Here, robust SHS with various surface structures and chemical components were obtained via a facile process: a suspension containing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and multi-scale silica nanoparticles (SNs) was poured on steel substrate and followed with desiccation. The surface could withstand severe abrasion without losing superhydrophobicity, and showed possibility to be scaled up. The ice adhesion tests showed that: 1) the surface structures played more important role in reducing ice adhesion than the surface chemical components; 2) the ice adhesion tended to be minimized on the SHS with multi-scale nanoparticles . The low ice adhesion could be ascribed to the following two aspects: the air pockets that greatly reduced the contact between ice and the resultant surface , and the lubrication of overcooled water in the surface asperities .

Incorporating innovative technology into functional fabrics extends their utility and addresses the daily challenges posed by fabric icing. Identifying effective anti-icing/deicing strategy is essential to mitigate the associated inconveniences. In this study, polypyrrole (PPy), Fe 3 O 4 particles and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are used as the raw materials to design an all-weather anti-icing and deicing functional fabric PDMS/Fe 3 O 4 /PPy@PET, presenting the photothermal/electrothermal and electromagnetic induction thermal functions. This functional fabric exhibits excellent hydrophobic performance with the contact angle of 152° and effectively delayed the droplet freezing for 181 s on a −10 ℃ cold table. The photothermal effect can reach an equilibrium temperature of 74.3 ℃ at 1 sunlight intensity and melt a 3 mm thick ice layer in 841 s. The electrothermal performance reaches to 72.2 ℃ at 10 V voltage and the ice layer is melted within 1436 s. The excellent electromagnetic induction thermal performance can reach to 71.4 ℃ in 5 min at 8 V voltage, and completely melt the ice layer in 444 s. In addition, the fabric offers excellent durability, abrasion resistance and UV resistance, allowing for long-term outdoor use. This opens up new ideas for the development of anti-icing and deicing functional fabric.

Developing smart organogels with simultaneous low ice adhesion, high mechanical strength, and durability through a simple method has proven to be challenging yet valuable. In this work, organogels (NF-x) possessing variable liquid paraffin contents (0–50 wt %) with fluorinated polynorbornene networks were produced by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using norbornene-trifluoroethyl ester (NF) and dinorbornyl glycol ester (NEG) as monomer and cross-linking agent, respectively. The stability, mechanical behavior, anti-icing, and antifrosting properties were comprehensively investigated. Owing to the well-designed networks, the organogels exhibited excellent stability even under harsh conditions for long-term use. Unprecedentedly, they showed a reversible pressure-responsive effect, wherein the paraffin could migrate from the inside of the gels to form a self-lubricating layer covering the surface under external force and subsequently reabsorbed and recovered to the original state upon force removal, enhancing the on-demand secretion of lubricants to the surface. The sensitivity to the applied force (merely 4 kPa of NF-5) was positively correlated with the paraffin content in the organogels. Benefiting from the fluorinated polynorbornene networks and switchable self-lubricating property, the organogels showed excellent durability in mechanical, anti-icing, and antifrosting properties. Additionally, the mechanical, anti-icing, and antifrosting properties could be adjusted by varying the paraffin content. Notably, the NF-5 ice-phobic coating with 50 wt % paraffin exhibited high mechanical strength (1.69 MPa) and low ice shear strength (17.65 kPa), even after 15 icing–deicing cycles, remaining below 28 kPa. This study offers an approach to conveniently develop smart anti-icing materials with high mechanical durability.

Photothermal materials are of great important for outdoor equipment in anti-icing/deicing due to their environmental friendliness, durability, and energy conservation. However, their deicing effectiveness is often limited by the photothermal conversion efficiency. In this study, we developed a hydrophobic photothermal surface covered by cilia including mesoporous shell-core Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, which rapidly heated up within ∼100 s and achieved a significant temperature difference of ∼52 °C at a solar radiation intensity. For the composite polymer network of the cilia, we used molecular dynamic simulation to reveal that the siloxane chains within the ciliary structure penetrate and entangle with photothermal mesoporous nanoparticles. The mesoporous design of nanoparticles improved light absorption efficiency. As a result, under light irradiation at 0.03 W/cm 2 , water remained unfrozen even at −10 °C. Moreover, we revealed the microscale mechanism of ice heterogeneous nucleation and growth on the surface of cilia via molecular dynamic simulation. This study provides valuable insights into anti-icing surface design, highlighting the potential applications of photothermal structure surfaces in de-icing technologies.

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs), as one of the most promising passive anti-icing materials, suffer from unavoidable icing under high-humidity cool environment. Photothermal de-icing capability with robust light absorption feature is thereby necessitated to integrate into SHSs to ensure maximum icephobic performance. Herein, a facile strategy of using polyurethane and synthesized waxberry-liked Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (WCNPs) to construct hierarchical micro-nanostructured composites exhibiting superhydrophobic, photothermal and “light-trapping” properties is proposed. WCNPs self-assemble from nanoscale spheres, inherently possessing a hierarchical micro-nano structure. Sophisticated surface structure created by abundant WCNPs with unique intrinsic hierarchical morphology provides the composites with both excellent water repellency and impressive “light-trapping” capability of 92.7 % light absorptivity. Besides, WCNPs are covered by self-polymerized tannic acid layer interconnected with octadecylamine, which further facilitates the hydrophobic properties. In high-humidity (95 %) environments at −10 ℃, ice delay time can be enhanced to 802 s, while the melting time under 1 sun irradiation for ice crystal and layer are only 156 s and 370 s, respectively. Furthermore, reliabilities of the coating are verified by comprehensive durability assessments, including wear resistance, adhesion and icing/deicing cycle tests. This study constructs a surface micro-nano layer structure to absorb the abundant solar energy in nature and transform it into heat, providing a promising solution in anti-icing and de-icing fields.

Ice accretion on wind turbine blades severely impacts the power generation efficiency, equipment lifespan, and safe operation of wind farms. Low-interfacial toughness materials have demonstrated potential for large-scale deicing under controlled laboratory conditions. However, their anti-icing and deicing performance in complex and harsh natural fields is rarely studied. Herein, low-interfacial toughness PDMS/SiO 2 coatings are prepared on aluminum plates. Field tests for anti-icing, icephobic, and large-scale deicing are conducted in the high-altitude regions of Southwest China. Fortunately, the PDMS/SiO 2 coating exhibits exceptional anti-icing and icephobic properties. The coating effectively delays the freezing of water droplets and natural ice accretion, significantly reducing icing weight and ice adhesion strength. During natural ice-covering processes, the ultra-low ice adhesion of the PDMS/SiO 2 coating aids in efficient ice shedding through wind and gravity and ensures rapid melting post-icing. Additionally, the PDMS/SiO 2 coating excels in large-scale deicing performance. The constant deicing force, governed by low interfacial toughness, provides robust assurance for efficient large-scale deicing of ice layers of varying sizes under gravity. Moreover, the coating demonstrates stable durability, retaining excellent deicing capabilities during icing/deicing cycles, UV radiation, and high-temperature aging tests. This study lays an experimental foundation for the further research and application of low-interfacial toughness materials.

Various organogel materials with either a liquid or solid surface layer have recently been designed and prepared. In this work, amphiphilic organogels (AmOG) are innovatively developed from copolymer P(PDMS-r-PEG-r-GMA) and 2,2′-diaminodiphenyldisulfide via epoxy group addition reaction and then infiltrated with amphiphilic lubricants instead of traditional hydrophilic or hydrophobic lubricants. Because of synergistic effects of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments of amphiphilic lubricants, the AmOG surfaces showed high stability and excellent anti-icing performance. The delay in the freezing point of water was 1000 s on AmOG surfaces, which is 40 times longer as compared to the untreated hydrophilic glass surface. More importantly, low ice adhesion strength (15.1 kPa) was observed on AmOG which remained about 40 kPa even after 20 icing–deicing cycles. The novel amphiphilic organogels provide a new idea to prepare long-term anti-icing materials for practical applications.
