Stretchable, self-healable, conductive hydrogels have received increasing attention due to their broad range of applications, such as wearable devices and ionic skin. However, severe challenges remain in integrating fatigue resistance, favorable self-healing, and stretchable and compressible efficiency into a hydrogel. Herein, a highly stretchable, compressible, self-healable somatosensory platform was fabricated by blending Fe3+ ions with polyvinyl alcohol acetoacetate (PVAA)/polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel to form a double network hydrogel, which combined chemical coordination and physical crosslinking in one system. In this system, the PAM network offered high stretchability and compressibility to the hydrogel. Meanwhile, the coordination of the Fe3+/PVAA network provided ionic conductivity and self-healing ability. The resulting hydrogel exhibits prominent stretchability (>700%), high sensitivity, high healing efficiency (80% within 24 h) and excellent fatigue resistance. Therefore, the hydrogel could be used as a potential artificial ionic skin including strain and pressure sensors to directly monitor human motion.

Incorporating sacrificial bonds into hydrogels networks has been demonstrated an efficient way to obtain ultrahigh strength , but is usually at the expense of flexibility and recoverability. This study demonstrates novel triple physically crosslinked hydrogels with very high stretchability, toughness and rapid self-recovery at ambient conditions. Physically crosslinked κ-carrageenan acts as the first network to host free radical copolymerization of polymers with Pluronic F127 diacrylate micelles . Hydrophobic association of micelles in the second network contributes to outstanding stretchability (over 1100%) and toughness (10.83 MJ/m 3 ). Further crosslinking of the second network through tridentate Fe 3+ –COO − coordination significantly enhances the fracture strength up to 2.7 MPa, and elastic modulus 1171 kPa. Systematic investigations demonstrate the key roles played by non-covalent crosslinking on energy dissipation during loadings and the damaged non-covalent networks could recover 40% toughness in 1 min at ambient conditions. These hydrogels are promising for applications as biocompatible load-bearing materials.

Gel-based strain sensors have great potential in the fields of motion detection and real-time healthcare. Nevertheless, the relatively low strain sensitivity and inferior anti-freezing property limit the utilization of these sensors. In this work, a novel multifunctional organohydrogel sensor was developed based on a poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) skeleton with poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): sulfonated lignin (PEDOT:SL) as the conductive material and a water/glycerol binary solvent as the dispersion medium. The conductive, self-wrinkled, soft and elastic properties endue the organohydrogel sensor with a superior gauge factor (GF) of up to 7 (strain: 100%), while the freezing tolerance of the water/glycerol solvent endows the organohydrogel with an excellent anti-freezing property. The organohydrogel sensor senses not only the movement of limbs, but also a weak pulse and throat vibrations. Moreover, physiological signals such as those used for electrocardiography (ECG) and electromyography (EMG) can be readily detected. In addition, the cell culture test shows that the organohydrogel is nontoxic, and the animal experiments demonstrate that the organohydrogel can protect skin from frostbite. Overall, this work presents a new concept to use lignin for conductive PEDOT polymerization and integrates the fabrication of conductive organohydrogel materials for precise strain sensing.

Poly(ethylene-co-hexamethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEHF) copolyesters with high intrinsic viscosity were synthesized from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), ethylene glycol (EG), and 1.6-hexanediol (HDO) through two-step melting polycondensation, characterized with 1H NMR, DSC, WAXD, and TGA, and assessed by tensile and impact tests. The molar fraction of HF unit in PEHF (ϕHF), namely, copolymer composition, is higher than the molar fraction of HDO in the feeding diols and can be predicted empirically via Mayer–Lewis equation with apparent reactivity ratio rHDO = 4.6 and rEG = 0.74. All the PEHFs exhibited a single glass transition temperature and excellent thermal stability. HF-rich (ϕHF ≥ 88 mol %) PEHFs are semicrystalline but the others are almost amorphous. In comparison with PEF, PEHFs with ϕHF of 28–36 mol % possess significantly improved tensile ductility (elongation at break 54–160%) and retain high tensile modulus (2.6–2.2 GPa) and yielding strength (71–65 MPa). The tensile properties are comparable to those of bottle-grade PET.

Copper nanowires (CuNWs) have been considered for the promising application as conductive element of stretchable conductors due to ultrahigh aspect ratio, outstanding conductivity, great flexibility and low-cost. However, controllable synthesis, surface oxidation , poor dispersity have always been main limitations to their application in stretchable conductors. Herein, highly conductive, stretchable and fully printable CuNWs-based composites (PNCNs) by infiltrating CuNWs into poly(styrene-blockbutadiene-block-styrene) (SBS) with a facile, cost-effective and scalable method were reported. CuNWs of high quality, chemical treatment by vacuum filtration way and special dispersion method facilitate fabrication of PNCNs of high performance. As-prepared PNCNs have superior electrical conductivity of 1858 S cm −1 , high break elongation of 920%. Moreover, PNCNs are stable after 1000 cycles for a bend radius of 4.0 mm and electric performance was not affected by twisting. Importantly, PNCNs can be printed on paper to fabricate flexible circuits which exhibit excellent electric performance at different tension conditions.

Polymers with self-healing ability have attracted great research efforts recently. A transparent self-healing polyurethane (PU) based on disulfide bonds is reported in this work. The crystalline structures, self-healing properties of the polyurethane were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), stress relaxation and tensile tests. The as-prepared self-healing polyurethane was transparent due to low crystallinity and exhibited excellent self-healing properties, stretchability and healing repeatability. The healing efficiency and elongation at break at a moderate healing temperature were over 90% and 800%, respectively. Meanwhile, the self-healing polyurethane exhibited an excellent healing repeatability and service reliablility. The self-healing mechanism was analyzed through surface analysis of the scratches and shape memory effect. The system was composed of a polyurethane network, which was responsible for the autonomous crack closure due to its shape memory characteristic, and an intrinsic self-healing component through dynamic disulfide bond exchange. The self-healing polyurethane might have potential applications in the fields of flexible electronics, including artificial skins, soft robotics, etc.

Lauric diacid (LCDA), also known as 1,12-dodecanedioic acid, is used to develop a series of copolyesters along with 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (CHDA) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). The resulting poly(butylene lauric dicarboxylate-co-butylene 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) (PBLC) is proved to be a random copolyester with three triad sequences. When the LCDA content increases from 20 to 60 mol%, Tm of the copolyester decreases from 133 to 57 °C. At the same time, the tensile modulus and strength decrease from 94 and 14 MPa to 40 and 5 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the elongation at break also drops from 640 to only 50%. However, further increasing the LCDA content to 80 mol%, the copolyester becomes amorphous with no Tm, and its tensile modulus, strength, and the elongation at break all improve significantly to 68 and 7 MPa, and over 1400%, respectively. More importantly, for the homo-polymer poly(butylene lauric dicarboxylate) (PBL), it has a relatively high Tm of 73 °C compared to that of polycaprolactone (PCL), but lower tensile modulus and strength, and significantly higher ductility, compared to those of PCL, linear low density polyethylene, and polybutylene succinate.

Up to now, a variety of hydrogels have been explored for strain sensors, but simultaneous accomplishment of high stretchability, rapid full self-recovery, favourable transparency and excellent sensing properties through employing inexpensive raw materials and simple synthesis approach remains challenging. Herein, AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O aqueous solution, as a sort of solvent, was utilized to facilely manufacture high performance hydrogel ionic conductors with novel one-pot dual ionic cross-linking approach. The resulting model hydrogel sensors manifested favorable transparency (>84%), excellent stretchability (1400%), good mechanical strength (421.2 kPa), outstanding rapid self-recovery (nearly full recover) and good anti-fatigue. Furthermore, our ionic hydrogel sensors demonstrated brilliant stretching sensitivity (gage factor as high as 9.6), and it displayed stable sensing performance for repeatedly real-time monitoring of both large and subtle deformations. Hence, the hydrogel sensors successfully achieved critical features combination and could serve as wearable devices to sense various human motions.

We present green organohydrogel-based stretchable (up to 700% strain), transparent, and room-temperature O 2 sensors with impressive performance, including drying and freezing tolerances, high sensitivity, broad detection range (100 ppm-100%), long-term stability, low theoretical detection limit (0.585 ppm), linearity, and the capability to real-time monitor human respiration by directly attaching on human skin. A facile solvent replacement approach is employed to partially exchange water with natural and edible xylitol/sorbitol molecules, generating stable, green and tough organohydrogels. Compared with the pristine hydrogel counterpart, the organohydrogel-based O 2 sensors feature higher stability, prolonged life time (140 days) and the ability to work over a wide range of temperatures (−38 to 65°C). The O 2 sensing mechanism is elucidated by investigating the redox reactions occurred at the electrode-hydrogel interface. This work develops a facile strategy to fabricate stretchable, transparent, and high-performance O 2 sensor using stable and green organohydrogels as novel transducing materials for practical wearable applications.

Graphical High stretchability (more than 1000 %) and conductivity (0.67 S/m) emulsion gels were fabricated from emulsions and the introduction of glycerol endowed them with broad operating temperature (−20 to 90 °C). The emulsion gel based strain sensors showed high sensitivity (gauge factor=6.240), fatigue resistance, self-healing and adhesion properties, realizing the repeatable and accurate detection of full-range human motions. Hydrogels with mechanical elasticity and conductivity are ideal materials in wearable devices. However, traditional hydrogels are fragile upon mechanical loading and lose functions in climate change because the internal water undergoes freeze and dehydration. Herein, we synthesize stable emulsions at high and low temperatures by introducing glycerol into the W/W emulsions. Then the high-stable emulsions are used as templates to produce the freestanding emulsion gels with enhanced mechanical strength and conductivity. The introduction of glycerol endows emulsions and emulsion gels with high and low temperature resistance (−20 to 90 °C). The fabricated strain sensors based on emulsion gels show high sensitivity (gauge factor=6.240), high stretchability (1081 %), fatigue resistance, self-healing and adhesion properties, realizing the repeatable and accurate detection of various human motions. These high-performance and eco-friendly emulsion gels can be promising candidates for next-generation artificial skin and human-machine interface.

The emerging intelligent piezoresistive yarn/textile-based sensors are of paramount importance for skin-interface electronics, owing to their unparalleled features including softness, breathability, and easy integration with functional devices. However, employing a facile way to fabricate 1D sensing yarns with mechanical robustness, multi-functional integration, and comfortability is still demanded for satisfying the practical applications. Herein, a facile one-step synchronous conjugated electrospinning and electrospraying technique is innovatively employed to continuously construct an Ag NW-embedded polyurethane (PU) nanofiber sensing yarn (AENSY) with hierarchical architecture. This 1D AENSY with weavability and stretchability can be woven into AENSY textile-based sensors integrated with functions of strain and pressure sensing. In this embedded multi-scale architecture, Ag NWs are evenly embedded and locked in the oriented and twisted PU nanofiber (PUNF) scaffold, forming the hierarchical mechanical sensing layer on the surface of the AENSY with favorable stability. Meanwhile, the presence of the elastic PUNFs enhances porosity, elasticity, and considerable deformation space, which in turn endow the AENSY textile-based sensor with a gauge factor (GF) up to 1010, a pressure sensitivity up to 16.7 N–1, high stretchability up to 160%, and high stability under long-term cycles. In addition, the AENSY textile-based sensor exhibits light weight and the unique advantage of skin-friendliness with the human body, which can be directly and conformally attached to the curved human skin to monitor the various human movements. Furthermore, the weavable AENSYs can be integrated into smart textiles with sensing arrays, which are capable for spatial pressure and strain mapping. Thus, the continuous one-step developing process and the stable embedded-twisted fiber structure provide a promising strategy to develop innovative smart yarns and textiles for personalized healthcare and human–machine interfaces.

Stretchable, self-healing, and breathable skin-biomimetic-sensing iontronics play an important role in human physiological signal monitoring and human–computer interaction. However, previous studies have focused on the mimicking of skin tactile sensing (pressure, strain, and temperature), and the development of more functionalities is necessary. To this end, a superior humidity-sensitive ionic skin is developed based on a self-healing, stretchable, breathable, and biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol–cellulose nanofibers organohydrogel film, showing a pronounced thickness-dependent humidity-sensing performance. The as-prepared 62.47-μm-thick organohydrogel film exhibits a high response (25,000%) to 98% RH, excellent repeatability, and long-term stability (120 days). Moreover, this ionic skin has excellent resistance to large mechanical deformation and damage, and the worn-out material can still retain its humidity-sensing capabilities after self-repair. Humidity-sensing mechanism studies show that the induced response is mainly related to the increase of proton mobility and interfacial charge transport efficiency after water adsorption. The superior humidity responsiveness is attributed to the reduced thickness and the increased specific surface area of the organohydrogel film, allowing real-time recording of physiological signals. Notably, by combining with a self-designed printed circuit board, a continuous and wireless respiration monitoring system is developed, presenting its great potential in wearable and biomedical electronics.
