Polydopamine as interfacial layer regulating micron-sized boron/polytetrafluoroethylene composite to improve the combustion performance

Jian Shao,Baozhong Zhu,Hailong Yu,Lingqi Zhu,Longfei Yun,Yunlan Sun

Boron powder has high bulk calorific value and mass calorific value, and is widely used in high-energy explosives and propellants. However, in practical application, there are issues such as poor ignition performance and low combustion efficiency, which affect its energy performance. In this work, firstly, polydopamine (PDA) was used as a cladding to coat the micron-sized boron (µB) and formed µB@PDA, and then the µB@PDA was connected with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to study the effect of fluoride and PDA interfacial structure on the combustion and agglomeration of boron powder in air. Results indicate that the PDA interfacial layer thickness on the µB surface increases with the concentration of the dopamine hydrochloride mixed solution. By slowing down the rate of PTFE decomposition, the PDA coating can control the thermal reaction characteristics of µB, which in turn has a considerable impact on the flame spread and the combustion intensity. In particular, the synergy of PDA and PTFE can considerably reduce µB agglomeration during combustion.

Effect of micron-sized zirconium powder on combustion decomposition behavior of molecular perovskite energetic material DAP-4

Kaili Liang,Yang Liu,Lishuang Hu,Jiashun Liang,Tiancheng Lv,Yanping Wang,Shuangqi Hu

Micron-sized zirconium (μZr) is a viable alternative fuel source for high-energy propellants. To explore the combustion performance of Zr-containing DAP-4-based composites, DAP-4/Zr and F/DAP-4/Zr composites were designed. The results showed that the optimized composite had high combustion performance. When DAP-4/Zr was 54:46, the sample had the highest combustion heat and the fastest flame spreading velocity. The combustion time of F/DAP-4/Zr became longer after adding F 2602 , and the flame spread was the fastest when F/DAP-4/Zr was 10:48.6:41.4. The results indicate that the introduction of μZr as a fuel in DAP-4 can improve the material's energy density and combustion characteristics.

The role of Fe nanospheres in energy releasing of DAP-4

Erhai An,Yihong Tan,Kehua Han,Xiaoxia Li,Xiong Cao,Yingxin Tan,Peng Deng

Molecular perovskite energetic material DAP-4 is seen as a potential high-energy oxidant due to its high energy, high density, high oxidation capacity, and facile preparation technology. However, optimizing its energy release and reducing its thermal decomposition temperature are huge challenges for its future application. In this work, the role of iron (Fe) nanospheres in the energy release of DAP-4 was studied. Our research has shown that Fe powder can not only serve as a fuel to promote combustion, but also as an important catalyst to significantly improve the thermal decomposition, energy release, and burning rate of DAP-4. By adding 25% Fe nanospheres, the decomposition temperature of DAP-4 was reduced to 299.7 °C, which is the most reduction by 84.7 °C from 384.4 °C (raw DAP-4) to 299.7 °C (DAP-4/Fe-5 with 25wt% Fe nanospheres) was obtained. The decomposition activation energy also decreases by at least 69.5 kJ mol −1 from 229.4 kJ mol −1 (DAP-4) to 159.9 kJ mol −1 (DAP-4/Fe-1 with 5wt% Fe nanospheres). The combustion performance of DAP-4/Fe composites is significantly improved by a 4∼5 times shorter burn rate. The energy-releasing mechanism of DAP-4 with the presence of Fe nanospheres was proposed. Fe x O y at the surface of Fe nanospheres played an important role in the energy releasing of DAP-4. This work showed a new idea for the potential application of molecular perovskite energetic materials.

Thermal decomposition and combustion performance of high-energy ammonium perchlorate-based molecular perovskite

Peng Deng,Huixin Wang,Xinbo Yang,Hui Ren,Qingjie Jiao

The development of high-energy ammonium perchlorate (NH 4 ClO 4 , AP)-based energetic materials is of great significance for promoting their potential applications. In this study, AP-based molecular perovskite energetic materials (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] were prepared via molecular assembly strategy with the facile one-pot reaction of AP, HClO 4 and triethylenediamine (dabco). The as-obtained sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The thermal decomposition and combustion performance was investigated by thermo-gravimetric/differential scanning calorimeter (TG-DSC), high speed photography and three-dimensional FT-IR. The results showed that combined with the oxidizer perchlorate and fuel dabco at the molecular level, ternary molecular perovskite (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] possessed a more stable thermal decomposition temperature (385.0 °C) than the monocomponent AP and the heat release is also as high as 3421 J g −1 . The thermal decomposition activation energy (181.070 kJ mol −1 ) of thermal decomposition of (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] had been expectably reduced from the activation energy (200.259 kJ mol −1 ) of high-temperature decomposition stage of AP, despite of low-temperature decomposition stage. The synergistic catalysis thermal decomposition mechanism based on the molecular perovskite structures was proposed. And the combustion performance demonstrated molecular perovskite (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] had a high energy-releasing efficiency. This work provides a proof-of-principle concept for the design and fabrication of high-performance solid propellants based on molecular perovskite (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ].

Heat release behavior of aluminum particles under pure nitrogen atmosphere

Xueqin Liao,Binghong Chen,Qiaoyu Zhang,Zehao Li,Jianzhong Liu

Herein, a thermal analysis system and a laser combustion diagnostic system were employed to comparatively investigate the reaction behavior differences of Al particles in N 2 and oxidizing atmospheres. The results show that Al particles have higher mass gain and heat release in N 2 compared to air and carbon dioxide at low heating rates. When the temperature is increased to 1000 °C, the reaction efficiency of Al in nitrogen is as high as 56.68%, much higher than that of 16.02% for air and 17.41% for carbon dioxide. Broken particles and large-sized agglomerates are found in the intermediate nitride products, and the particle surfaces become loose and porous. Combustion test results show that the combustion performance of Al particles in air is better than that in N 2 . Nanoscale smooth spherical alumina particles are found in the condensed combustion products of Al particles under air. Whisker-like aluminum nitride (AlN) is observed under nitrogen.

Effect of Fluoroalcohol Chain Extension Modified HTPB Binder on the Combustion Performance of Aluminized Propellants

Yanjie Huang,Kanghua Chang,Jie Yao,Xueyong Guo,Chen Shen,Shi Yan

To enhance both the mechanical properties of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) binder and the combustion efficiency of aluminized propellants, 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoro-1,6-hexanediol (OFHD) was employed as a chain extender to impart mechanical regulation to the HTPB binder. Mechanical testing showed that the mechanical properties of fluoride-modified HTPB polyurethane (FPU) were significantly improved: the peak tensile strength of the optimized samples reached 1.99 MPa, and the elongation at break attained 486%. The structural characterization of the FPUs was conducted using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Thermogravimetry-mass spectrometer (TG-MS) analysis revealed that the initial thermal decomposition temperature of the FPU shifted from 170 °C to 162 °C, accompanied by the release of fluorine-containing fragments during decomposition. Analysis of the combustion residue indicated that the addition of OFHD can reduce the agglomeration of aluminum (Al) powder in aluminized propellants. Dynamic pressure characteristics results showed an augmented pressurization rate under argon and oxygen atmospheres, increased by 18.67% and 37.29%, respectively. Heat release tests indicated that the aluminized propellants with the addition of OFHD had a higher combustion heat, being increased by 6.57%. The binder system is expected to be applied in aluminized propellants to improve the mechanical properties and combustion efficiency of Al powder.

Elucidating the influence of metal oxides on pyrolytic behaviors and combustion performance of green gas generating agent 5-Aminotetrazole/Sr(NO3)2

Shuna Zhao,Hao Liu,Mi Li,Lin Jiang

5-Aminotetrazole/strontium nitrate (5AT/Sr(NO 3 ) 2 ) propellant is widely utilized as green gas generating agent in fire extinguishers. To enhance the combustion rate and modify the gas production performance of 5AT/Sr(NO 3 ) 2 propellant, this study investigated the catalytic effects of adding different metal oxides (Bi 2 O 3 , PbO, TiO 2 , and CoO) on its pyrolysis and combustion process. The pyrolysis behavior, pyrolysis mechanism and combustion performance of 5AT/Sr(NO 3 ) 2 propellants were studied by using thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), differential scanning caborimetry (DSC), mass spectrometry (MS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and closed bomb vessel tests. Experimental results indicated that Bi 2 O 3 and PbO predominantly facilitated the thermal decomposition process of 5AT, while TiO 2 and CoO primarily catalyzed the thermal decomposition of Sr(NO 3 ) 2 . Certainly, the addition of metal oxides as catalysts to 5AT/Sr(NO 3 ) 2 propellant holds significant potential for improving the application as a gas generating agents in fire extinguishers.

Probing the difference in improving the ignition and combustion of micro/nano-sized aluminum powder modified by VitonA

Chen Yang,Wang Jiquan,Wang Yanan,Zhu Baozhong,Sun Yunlan

Aluminum (Al) powder is commonly used in solid propellants because of its high energy density. However, Al powder is prone to agglomeration during combustion, resulting in lower combustion efficiency. The energy-containing composites of micro/nano-sized Al powder modified by the hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride dipolymers (VitonA) were fabricated by an evaporation solvent method, and the morphology, thermal behavior, and ignition and combustion (IAC) properties were investigated. The IAC performance of the nano-sized aluminum (nAl) is improved obviously when the coating concentration of VitonA reaches 15%, and higher combustion intensity is attained, which confirms the occurrence of the preignition reaction between nAl and fluoropolymer. Although the IAC properties of micro-sized Al (μAl) powder are also improved by VitonA, there is different impact mechanism of VitonA on the nAl and μAl. These results provide guidance for inhibiting the agglomeration of Al powder and improving its combustion efficiency. Graphical

Preparation and combustion properties of Al–Li alloy particles with enhanced stability and compatibility via in situ polymerization

Jiahe Li,Fang Du,Changsheng Tang,Luyang Wang,Yulin Yang,Debin Xia,Jian Zhang,Bowen Tao,Ping Wang,Kaifeng Lin

Al–Li alloys are considered promising materials in solid propellants owing to their higher combustion efficiency than Al particles, which exhibit incomplete combustion. However, Al–Li alloy particles cannot be directly applied in propellant systems owing to their poor compatibility. Thus, in this work, an in situ polymerized film was formed via the pretreatment of Al–Li alloy followed by polymerization with trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) and N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA). The hydrothermal stability of the coated samples was improved with a mass variation rate of 5.82% on treatment with TFEMA (30%) and MBA (10%), corresponding to 116.62% of Al–Li at 60 °C and 75% humidity for 30 days. Besides, the thermostability increased based on the 19° backward skewing of the high temperature exothermic peak. Meanwhile, there were no pores and cracks in the HTPB propellant, which proved the possibility of its practical application with the compatibility of level 1 with HTPB in solid rocket motors. In addition, the Al–Li propellant exhibited a better combustion performance of 0.53 s and 1309.33 °C than the Q3 Al propellant, with 1.34 s ignition delay time and 990.24 °C burning temperature. The combustion efficiency was also improved based on the observation of combustion phenomena and residue size. Besides, the combustion mechanism was analyzed based on the characteristics of Al–Li with the micro-explosion effect. Therefore, Al–Li alloy has the potential to be used as a new generation solid propellant.

In-situ heteroatoms stabilization of zero-dimensional boron nanospheres for high-energy nanofluid fuels combustion enhancement

Haoqiang Sheng,Xiaobin Huang,Zeming Ji,Xiangzhao Wang,Wenbin Hu,Yuan Ji,Bo Zhang,Hong Liu

Since boron powder has the highest volume energy density , it has long been desired for use as fuel in aerospace and other fields. However, boron has poor ignition performance and low combustion efficiency due to uneven microstructure and oxide layers of boron. Here, we report a facile strategy to prepare zero-dimensional boron nanospheres from micrometer-scale amorphous boron through ultrasound-assisted in-situ stabilization of heteroatoms for inhibition of boron oxide layer by using hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol (BPS) polycondensation and carbonization . The diameter of the obtained boron nanospheres was in the range of 500–800 nm, which is the smallest reported diameter of regular boron nanoparticles . The initial reaction temperature of [email protected] decreased from 791.1 to 641.7 °C, and the ignition delay time of 20 wt% [email protected] /RP-3 nanofluid fuel decreased to 393 ms. The addition of CPZS@B promoted RP-3 oxidation at both low temperatures (<200 °C) and high temperatures (>200 °C) by in-situ FTIR analysis. Notably, the prepared zero-dimensional nano-boron exhibited removal of surface oxidation and complete combustion degree (from 42.06 % to 80.36 %). This work provides a new method for the preparation of nano-boron and a solution for increasing the fuel energy density of hydrocarbon fuels .

Improved combustion performance of solid propellant with sliver nanoparticle decorated Al addition

Jiao Li,Jian Zhang,Yulin Yang,Kaifeng Lin,Debin Xia

The oxide layer on the Al particle surface seriously limits application in solid propellants, resulting in low combustion efficiency. This work prepares a series of Al decorated by nano-silver (namely Al/Ag) via in-situ reduction to enhance combustion performance Thanks to silver’s smaller specific heat capacity, surplus heat energy is transferred to the Al core through a tight combination with decorated noble metal nanoparticles. Along with the intermetallic reaction, the thermal stress on Al would accelerate the oxide shell rupture to reduce the oxygen gas diffusion barrier during combustion. The oxidation temperature of Al/Ag-2 composites decreases from 1017.3 °C to 982.93 °C. Hence, the combustion performance of solid propellants containing Al/Ag composites is improved with the higher maximum flame temperature and emission spectra intensity. In addition, the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) is catalyzed via nano-silver. The combustion efficiency of the propellant containing Al/Ag-2 is effectively improved by the synergistic effect in which the potential energy from Al and AP is exploited as far as possible. This work demonstrates that metal surface modification significantly improves the combustion performance of solid propellants.

Core-shell nAl@Fc-Fx nanocomposites with dual function: Combustion and anti-migration performance

Yinghui Hu,Dongyu Hao,Bowen Tao,Fang Wang,Dakang Wang,Ruiqing Fan,Debin Xia,Ping Wang,Yulin Yang,Aimin Pang,Kaifeng Lin

In this study, three fluoro-containing ferrocene compounds (Fc-Fx) with different fluorine and Fc contents were prepared and then be coated on the surface of nanoaluminum (nAl) to increase the combustion performance of nAl and the anti-migration performance of Fc. By removing the aluminium oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) shell and instead constructing a new Fc-Fx shell with a thickness of 5–30 nm on the surface of nAl, the obtained nAl@Fc-Fx nanocomposites showed enhanced performances in i) anti-migration and ii) combustion performances owing to the Al-F interaction and the intimate contact between nAl and Fc-Fx. Among all three nAl@Fc-Fx nanocomposites, nAl@Fc-F2 with the longest fluorine chain could shorten the ignition delay time from 1.83 s to 1.03 s and nAl@Fc-F3 with highest Fc content could decrease the decomposition temperature of ammonium perchlorate to 328 °C. When the nAl@Fc-Fx nanocomposites were applied in the propellants, a shorter migration length (0.1–0.4 cm) was achieved as compared with the physically mixing nAl/Fc compound (3.0 cm), which was beneficial to enhancing their burning performance. This work demonstrated that nAl@Fc-Fx nanocomposites had great potential to be applied in solid rocket propellants.
