The commercialization of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries faces several challenges, including poor conductivity, unexpected volume expansion, and continuous sulfur loss from the cathode due to redox shuttling. In this study, we introduce a novel polymer via a simple cross-linking between poly(ether-thioureas) (PETU) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)- poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as a bifunctional binder for Li-S batteries (devotes as “PPTU”). Compared to polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), as-prepared PPTU exhibits significantly higher electrical conductivity, facilitating electrochemical reactions. Additionally, PPTU demonstrates effective adsorption of lithium polysulfides, leading to improved cycling stability by suppressing the shuttling effect. We investigate this behavior by monitoring morphological changes at the cell interface using synchrotron X-ray tomography. Cells with PPTU binders exhibit remarkable rate performance, desired reversibility, and excellent cycling stability even under stringent bending and twisting conditions. Our work represents promising progress in functional polymer binder development for Li-S batteries.

A unique hybrid binder system based on polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) was designed for lithium–sulfur batteries. It is found that the hydrophilic PAM possesses suitable swelling properties and favorable interface reaction kinetics. Moreover, the strong chemical adsorption and hydrogen bond interaction of polar functional groups mainly from PAA confine the out-diffusion of polysulfides and decrease byproduct deposition on the electrode. Electrochemical test results demonstrate that sulfur cathodes equipped with the PAM–PAA binder possess higher reversible capacity, lower charge transfer resistance, and better cycle and rate performances in contrast to conventional PVDF cathodes.

The major cause for capacity fading of silicon nanoparticle (SiNP)-based electrodes is the immense pressure applied toward the conductive networks during the charge/discharge process. While numerous efforts have been devoted to investigating different types of polymer binders, the rational design of an adhesive binder with pressure sensitivity has rarely been reported. Herein, a series of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) synthesized via copolymerization of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) and acrylic acid (AA) are evaluated as polymer binders for SiNP-based electrodes. The balance between the density of interaction groups and viscoelastic properties is systematically investigated for efficient binding performance. The SiNP-based electrode using PSA with 20 mol % of 2-EHA (Si-PSA-20%) exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, achieving a capacity retention of 83% at the 100th cycle compared with 54% for Si-PAA after activation. Si-PSA-20% also delivers a superior cycling performance at a high current density (1731 mAh g–1 after 350 cycles vs 719 mAh g–1 after 150 cycles for Si-PAA, 1.8 A g–1) and at high mass loading of active materials (capacity retention of 74 vs 38% for Si-PAA after 100 cycles, SiNP content ∼1.2 mg cm–2). Atomic force microscopy (AFM), peel tests, and Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations are employed to understand their binder performance. The novel design and systematical investigation of PSAs as binders will definitely be appealing for not only the Si electrode but also for other high-energy-density electrode materials.

The binder acts a pivotal part in determining the mechanical and electrochemical performances of lithium-ion battery electrodes. Herein, a series of water-soluble Si anode binders based on carboxymethyl chitosan (C-Cs) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is developed. Water-soluble C-Cs
and aqueous emulsion SBR solution are mixed to form C-Cs/SBR binders. The physical properties of the modified Si electrode are investigated through electrolyte swelling test, peeling test, and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical strength provided to Cu foils and active substances
by the C-Cs/SBR binder is higher than that produced by C-Cs. This performance can effectively reduce the stress/strain caused by the drastic volume change of the Si anodes during repeated uses and improve the electrochemical property of lithium-ion batteries. The initial thicknesses of the
Si electrodes with polyvinylidene fluoride, C-Cs, and C-Cs/SBR20 binders are approximately 7.1, 7.2, and 6.9 µm, respectively. After 100 cycles, their initial thicknesses increase to 11.2, 12.4, and 7.2 µm and correspond to expansions of 57.8%, 72.2%, and 4.3%, respectively.
The discharge capacity of Si electrodes containing C-Cs/SBR20 binder reaches to 1340 mAh·g−1 when the current density is 4 A·g−1, and reserves to be 1020 mAh·g−1 after undergoing 400 cycles of repeated use at
500 mA·g−1.

In this work, a template-free hydrothermal strategy has been developed to fabricate 3D hierarchical MoS 2 microflowers on macroporous Ti mesh (MoS 2 MF-Ti) as a binder-free electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It is found that the Ti mesh is able to provide an ideal platform for self-assembly of the MoS 2 nanosheets into the hierarchical microflowers. The as-prepared MoS 2 MF-Ti electrode is characteristic of meso/macro porous structures, abundant active edges and good conductivity. As a result, the MoS 2 MF-Ti demonstrates greatly enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability toward HER due to its desirable structural features.

Layered two-dimensional MoSe 2 has raised much interest in lithium/sodium ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs) due to its unique structure and high theoretical capacity. In this work, we have fabricated MoSe 2 @carbon cloth (MoSe 2 @CC) composites through an in situ hydrothermal approach followed by an annealing treatment. The as-synthesized MoSe 2 @CC composites are constructed by MoSe 2 nanoflowers anchored on CC network, which can be directly used as binder-free anodes for LIBs and SIBs. As an anode for LIBs, the MoSe 2 @CC performs excellent rate capacity (1337, 1092, 952, 831 and 749 mAh g −1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 A g −1 ) and super long-life cycling stability (638 mAh g −1 remains after 1200 cycles at 5 A g −1 ). As for SIBs, the MoSe 2 @CC electrode delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 839 mAh g −1 and excellent long-life cycling stability, retaining 202 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles. Kinetics results indicate that the Li + and Na + storages in MoSe 2 @CC are both dominated by surface-based pseudocapacitive process, which greatly improves the rate performance of LIBs/SIBs. The CC provides a conductive network and an excellent utilization rate of the active material MoSe 2 to improve the electrochemical performance.

A kind of fluorinated polyimide carrying sulfonyl groups (SFPI) as a novel binder is synthesized, which possesses excellent thermal stability, solubility, and mechanical properties. The cells with SFPI binder exhibit lower impedance and polarization compared with the cells adding the conventional PVDF binder. The electrochemical test results showed that the SFPI binder–based LiFePO 4 (LFP) electrode exhibits 134.1 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles and about 94.1% of the capacity is maintained. Especially, the overcharge safety of lithium-ion batteries during overcharge state is significantly improved by incorporating a SFPI binder.

High-capacity silicon (Si) is recognized as a potential anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Unfortunately, large volume expansion during discharge/charge processes hinders its areal capacity. In this work, we design a flexible graphene-fiber-fabric (GFF)-based three-dimensional conductive network to form a binder-free and self-standing Si anode for high-performance LIBs. The Si particles are strongly wrapped in graphene fibers. The substantial void spaces caused by the wrinkled graphene in fibers enable effective accommodation of the volume change of Si during lithiation/delithiation processes. The GFF/Si-37.5% electrode exhibits an excellent cyclability with a specific capacity of 920 mA h g–1 at a current density of 0.4 mA cm–2 after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the GFF/Si-29.1% electrode exhibits an excellent reversible capacity of 580 mA h g–1 at a current density of 0.4 mA cm–2 after 400 cycles. The capacity retention of the GFF/Si-29.1% electrode is up to 96.5%. More importantly, the GFF/Si-37.5% electrode with a mass loading of 13.75 mg cm–2 achieves a high areal capacity of 14.3 mA h cm–2, which outperforms the reported self-standing Si anode. This work provides opportunities for realizing a binder-free, flexible, and self-standing Si anode for high-energy LIBs.

In the research of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, silicon materials have become a research hotspot in the field of new energy batteries by virtue of their theoretical specific capacity of up to 4200 mA h g–1. However, the volume change of the silicon anode during lithiation/delithiation is as high as 300%, which leads to the collapse of the electrode structure and thus affects its cycling stability. Here, we propose a spiderweb-like 3D network binder named AGE to resist the volume expansion of the silicon anode and maintain its integrity during long cycling time. Epichlorohydrin as a crosslinker to form a spiderweb-like network (AGE) with gum Arabic (GA) and guar gum (GG) under the open loop condition of epichlorohydrin. During the lithiation/lithiation process, the three-dimensional network structure of the AGE binder can dissipate the stresses generated in the silicon material, and the abundant polar functional groups of AGE can effectively interact with the hydrogen on the surface of the silicon material by hydrogen bonds. In this way, the structure of the silicon cell remains intact, and the cycling stability is significantly improved (93.4% of the initial capacity) compared to that with PAA as the binder (23.2% of the initial capacity).

Although high-capacity silicon/carbon (Si/C) composites are widely recognized as the most promising alternative to commercial graphite anodes for next-generation high-energy lithium–ion batteries (LIBs), their practical implementation faces significant challenges due to structural and interfacial instability caused by the substantial volume expansion of Si during charge–discharge cycles. Developing cost-effective binders with superior bonding strength and excellent interfacial compatibility for multicomponent Si/C electrodes is crucial to overcoming these limitations. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a linear copolymer binder (HAMN) incorporating four distinct functional units through a facile one-pot aqueous radical polymerization method. This innovative binder demonstrates multiple advantages, including cost efficiency, exceptional water solubility, superior slurry rheology, remarkable mechanical flexibility, and strong interfacial affinity for Si/C composites. The HAMN-based Si/C electrode exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance, maintaining 91.24% capacity retention after 600 cycles at 0.5C in a half-cell configuration. More importantly, in practical 18,650 cylindrical full-cell tests, the battery demonstrates impressive cycling stability with capacity retention rates of 86.2% after 400 cycles at 0.5C and 78.84% after 700 cycles at 1C. These compelling results underscore the tremendous potential of the HAMN binder in enabling the practical application of high-energy Si/C composite anodes for advanced LIBs.

Compared with traditional commercial adsorbent zeolite pellets, binder-free molecular sieves can provide better adsorption performance. In this paper, we reported a novel method to synthesize binder-free zeolite X pellets (BF-Z), that is, zeolite X powder was intricately combined with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and then the sample was calcinated to form crystals, where HPMC was decomposed and HNTs was also completely converted into binder-free X zeolite. The synthesized BF-Z showed the highest CO 2 adsorption capacity of 4.98 mmol/g at 303 K and 1 bar, compared with commercial NaX zeolites produced by Jianlong, Sigma and UOP companies. Calculated by IAST model, the separation coefficient of CO 2 to N 2 (CO 2 /N 2 = 25/75) on BF-Z is 74 at 303 K and 1 bar. The great separation performance of CO 2 from N 2 (CO 2 /N 2 = 25/75) was also exhibited in breakthrough experiments and a designed VSA process. Compared with commercial NaX (UOP), in breakthrough experiment, BF-Z presented high CO 2 adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate; and in designed thirty six-step vacuum swing adsorption process (VSA), the six-bed VSA system using BF-Z as adsorbents demonstrated excellent separation performance such as high CO 2 purity and recovery, low energy consumption and enhanced CO 2 production capacity. The notable efficacy of BF-Z in CO 2 adsorption and separation underscores its promising utility in both commercial and industrial settings.

With the growing concern over increasing energy density, lithium–sulfur batteries have garnered significant interest from researchers. However, the volume expansion of the sulfur cathode, which leads to poor cycling stability at high loadings, poses a major challenge to their practical application. Traditional binders are highly susceptible to cracking and structural collapse as the coating thickness increases. Our study presents a dual-component composite binder (G2CEA) that harmoniously blends rigidity and flexibility, with each component serving a specific function. Guar gum (GG), the rigid component, envelops the SPAN interface and contributes to the formation of the CEI film, ensuring interface stability. Poly(2-Carboxyethyl acrylate) (PCEA), the flexible component, retains adhesion and ductility in the electrolyte, cushioning the volume changes of SPAN particles and maintaining the structural integrity of the electrode. This innovative design endows the G2CEA-based cathode with superior cycling stability (97.6% retention after 164 cycles at 0.1C) under high loadings (7.5 mg cm−2), offering a valuable perspective for the design of practical binders in the future.
