Degradation of rhodamine B by fenton-like system with Fe-Cu/HZSM-5 catalyst

Jun-Feng Lu,Huan Wang,Yi Zhou,Xue-Ying Mao,Xiao-Qian Feng,Shuang Wang,Yong-Hua Zhao

Background Rhodamine B (RhB) poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. While Fenton oxidation process is promising approach for RhB degradation, the conventional Fenton reaction has the narrow pH range and poor reusability. To overcome these, this study developed Fenton-like system with Fe-Cu/HZSM-5 catalyst for effective RhB degradation. Methods A series of Fe x Cu 5-x /HZSM-5 catalysts (x represents the molar ratio of Fe to Cu) were prepared by impregnation. These catalysts were integrated with H 2 O 2 to construct Fenton-like system for the degradation of RhB. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, FT-IR, and N 2 adsorption-desorption at low temperature techniques. Significant findings Among the tested catalysts, Fe 3 Cu 2 /HZSM-5 exhibited optimal performance, achieving near-complete RhB degradation (∼100%) under the condition of 45 °C, 5.3 mM/L H 2 O 2 , 3.0 g/L catalyst dosage, and broad pH range (2–5). Mechanistic studies confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the primary oxidants responsible for RhB degradation in Fenton-like system. Under ·OH attacking, RhB underwent a series of reactions such as N-deethylation and disruption of the conjugated structure and was eventually mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O. Overall, a novel Fe-Cu/HZSM-5 catalyst was developed to address the limitations of the traditional Fenton reaction, providing valuable insights for future research in this field.

In-situ formed nanoscale Fe0 for fenton-like oxidation of thermosetting unsaturated polyester resin composites: Nondestructively recycle carbon fiber

Baolong Wang,Xueying Sun,Fei Lu,Yibo Shen,Ningdi Xu,Yingying Liu,Yudong Huang,Zhen Hu

Thermosetting unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) composites were found widespread industrial applications. However, the numerous stable carbon-carbon bonds in cross-linked networks made them intractable for degradation, causing the large-scale composite wastes. Here a nanoscale Fe 0 catalyst in-situ forming strategy was exploited to nondestructively recycle carbon fiber (CF) from UPR composites via Fenton-like reaction. The nano-Fe 0 catalyst employed in this strategy activated H 2 O 2 for removing UPR, featuring mild conditions and efficient degradation ability. Aiming at facile growth of the catalyst, a porous UPR was achieved by the hydrolysis of alkalic system. The nanoscale Fe 0 catalyst was subsequently formed in-situ on the surface of hydrolyzed resin by borohydride reduction. Benefiting from fast mass transfer, the in-situ grown nano-Fe 0 showed more efficient degradation ability than added nano-Fe 0 or Fe 2+ catalyst during Fenton-like reaction. The experiments indicated that hydrolyzed resin could be degraded more than 90% within 80 min, 80 °C. GC-MS, FT-IR analysis and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation were conducted to explained the fracture processes of carbon skeleton in hydrolyzed resin. Especially, a remarkable recovery process of CF from composites was observed, with a 100 percent elimination of resin. The recycled CF cloth exhibited a 99% strength retention and maintained the textile structure, microtopography , chemical structure, resulting in the nondestructive reclaim of CF. This in-situ formed nanoscale Fe 0 catalytic degradation strategy may provide a promising practical application for nondestructively recycle CF from UPR composites.

Construction of hierarchically porous α-Fe2O3 nanosheets from Fe-PVP hybrid gel for sustainable Fenton-like degradation of tetracycline antibiotics with low H2O2 consumption

Mengru Shi,Weijiang Tang,Sheng Guo,Fengxi Chen

Emerging antibiotic pollutants pose long-term risks to ecosystems and human health, necessitating the development of advanced elimination technologies. In this study, hierarchically porous α-Fe 2 O 3 nanosheets (α-Fe 2 O 3 -PNS) were prepared from an iron-polyvinylpyrrolidone (Fe-PVP) hybrid gel, where PVP served multiple functions, including iron immobilization, morphology template, pore formation, and crystallite growth regulation. As an efficient heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst, α-Fe 2 O 3 -PNS achieved 93.6 % degradation of tetracycline (TC, 25 mg/L) within 2 h under mild conditions (25 °C, pH 5) using only 4 mM H 2 O 2 . The reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with a high rate constant (0.0606 min −1 ) and an outstanding normalization factor (8.13). Key operational parameters (i.e., PVP dosage, catalyst loading, H 2 O 2 concentration, initial pH, coexisting anions and natural organic matter) were investigated. The material exhibited good reusability over five consecutive cycles and maintained robust performance in real water matrices. Its superior catalytic activity originated from exposed (113) crystal planes, abundant accessible iron sites, and rapid Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling facilitated by the large surface area. Radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed that hydroxyl radicals, generated via surface Fe 2+ -mediated H 2 O 2 activation, are dominant reactive species, driving TC degradation through hydroxylation, oxidative cleavage, and ring-opening reactions. This study provides an energy- and resource-efficient solution for sustainable water remediation, operating effectively under ambient and circumneutral conditions with low H 2 O 2 consumption.

Synergistic mechanisms in Fenton-like reactions: Coal gasification fine slag-loaded Fe-Al LDH catalysts for phenolic wastewater degradation

Hongyang Mao,Shulei Li,Lihui Gao,Si Shen,Yanhong Liu,Keyi Xu

Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS), a typical coal-based solid waste, poses significant environmental challenges with an annual output exceeding 50 million tons in China. The complex distribution of carbon and ash components necessitates the development of a material that can effectively harness both carbon and ash for comprehensive utilization. While layered double hydroxides (LDHs) exhibit catalytic potential, their performance is often limited by severe particle aggregation. Herein, we engineered a robust carbon-anchored Fe-Al-LDH composite (CGFS-LDH) through hydrothermal co-precipitation, demonstrating exceptional efficacy in H 2 O 2 activation for phenol degradation. Remarkably, CGFS-LDH achieved 100 % removal of 200 mg L −1 phenol within 60 min. Advanced characterization (XPS, XRD, EPR, LC-MS, and electrochemical analysis) revealed that CGFS serves dual roles: as a structural scaffold preventing LDH aggregation and as an electron shuttle promoting Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox cycling. Although trace amounts of Fe (0.2 wt%) and Al (0.3 wt%) leached due to dynamic precipitation-dissolution equilibrium, the catalyst maintained outstanding stability over multiple cycles, with negligible activity loss. This work introduces an effective strategy for the comprehensive utilization and high-value transformation of CGFS, while also providing novel insights into the development of highly efficient and stable porous nanocomposites catalysts.

A permeable electrochemical reactive barrier for underground water remediation using TiO2/graphite composites as heterogeneous electrocatalysts without releasing of chemical substances

Wen Zhang,Mingming Gao,Fei Miao,Xiaoyan Wu,Shuguang Wang,Xinhua Wang

Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) are well-studied and widely-applied technologies in underground water remediation . However, the releasing of chemical substances cannot be avoided during the PRBs operation. In this study, a novel permeable electrochemical reactive barrier (PERB) was fabricated for underground water remediation using a TiO 2 /graphite composite (TiO 2 /C) as the heterogeneous electrocatalyst . TiO 2 /C performed an electro-Fenton-like reaction on cathode and an anodic oxidation on anode respectively, along with the variety of the TiO 2 lattice. The performance of this PERB system was evaluated using tetracycline hydrochloride (TTC) degradation. TTC could be degraded at a low applied potential and a wide range of pH. The degradation rate of about 60% was obtained at the optimized reaction condition: the interelectrode potential difference of 1.2 V, pH 3.0, the anode 10 cm above cathode. The relative position and spacing of the electrodes effected the mass transfer equilibrium of TTC. During the 25-day persistent degradation of TTC, the PERB system shown a perfect stability with rarely leaching of Ti. This work explored the potential for underground water remediation by the electrocatalysis with the goal of establishing a clean and eco-friendly PERB system.

3D DNAzyme Motor Nanodevice With Self-Powered FRET Amplifier and Self-Supplied H2O2 for Enhancing Human Neutrophil Elastase Profiling and Chemodynamic Therapy in Lung Tumor

Huiyan Du,Ensheng Xu,Yihan Xu,Qingwang Xue,Hongxia Xu,Jibin Song

The development of theragnostic nanosystems integrating FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) imaging and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of lung tumors is still a big challenge. Herein, a peptide-assembled 3D DNAzyme motor nanodevice is engineered for a self-powered FRET amplifier profiling human neutrophil elastase (HNE) and self-supplied H 2 O 2 enhancing CDT. The nanodevice is prepared by depositing AuNPs on ZIF-8, in which ZIF-8 co-loaded the lysosomal targeting peptide-modified copper peroxides (PCPs) and hairpins (H1, H2, and H3), AuNPs are co-labeled by DNAzyme-peptide (DP) conjugate and H3. In the tumor micro-environment, HNE driven 3D DNAzyme walker followed by an exponential amplification constructed by a synergistic cross-activation between hybridization chain reaction and DNAzyme, generating a self-powered FRET amplifier. The FRET amplifier specifically measures HNE with a sensitivity of 0.026 pM, and successfully images exogenous HNE in living cells and monitors HNE in mouse models. Moreover, the PCPs can target lysosomes, reducing lysosome escape. The self-supplying H 2 O 2 undertaken by PCPs improves the Cu (II)-catalyzed Fenton-like reaction, effectively causing cell apoptosis to inhibit tumor growth. Significantly, the nanodevice successfully screens inhibitors and discriminates the HNE level in normal and lung cancer tissues, suggesting that the nanodevice provides an effective tool for the diagnosis and treatment of lung tumors.

Hypoxia-Adapted Sono-chemodynamic Treatment of Orthotopic Pancreatic Carcinoma Using Copper Metal–Organic Frameworks Loaded with an Ultrasound-Induced Free Radical Initiator

Yu Sun,Jing Cao,Xue Wang,Cong Zhang,Jiali Luo,Yiqing Zeng,Chao Zhang,Qunying Li,Ying Zhang,Wen Xu,Tao Zhang,Pintong Huang

The efficacy of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is largely dependent upon oxygen availability to generate deleterious reactive oxygen species, and as such, hypoxic microenvironments greatly constrain the efficacy of SDT. Development of free radical generators that are not dependent on oxygen and related combination treatment strategies thus have the potential to enhance the antitumor potential of SDT. Combined treatment strategies are expected to improve the efficacy of sonodynamic antitumor therapy. As metal–organic framework (MOF) platforms are highly amenable to integration with other therapeutic approaches, we herein report the development of tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive nanoparticles constructed by embedding the azo initiator 2,2′-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl)propane]dihydrochloride (AIPH) into hypoxia-triggered copper metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF) nanovectors to achieve synergistic sono-chemodynamic therapy in an orthotopic murine pancreatic carcinoma model system. When exposed to hypoxic conditions within the TME, this Cu-MOF structure underwent degradation, leading to the release of Cu2+ and AIPH. Cu2+ was then able to deplete local glutathione stores, resulting in the reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+, which then reacts with endogenous H2O2 in a Fenton-like reaction to yield cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) for chemodynamic therapy. When exposed to ultrasound irradiation, AIPH further degraded in an oxygen-independent manner to yield nitrogen bubbles and alkyl radicals, the former of which enhanced the ability of these nanoparticles to penetrate deeply into the tumor. The resultant radicals induced substantial DNA damage and apoptotic cell death within target tumors under different levels of oxygen availability. As such, this hypoxic TME-responsive synergistic sono-chemodynamic approach offers an ideal means of achieving oxygen-independent free radical generation and enhanced treatment efficacy.

Copper ferrite heterojunction coatings empower polyetheretherketone implant with multi-modal bactericidal functions and boosted osteogenicity through synergistic photo/Fenton-therapy

Junchuan Zhang,Xiangyu Gao,Daichuan Ma,Shuai He,Bingwen Du,Weizhong Yang,Kenan Xie,Lu Xie,Yi Deng

Drug-free antibacterial therapy, such as photodynamic therapy and chemodynamic therapy, has become a mainstream in the treatment of implant-associated infection (IAI) due to its considerable potential on effective eradication of pathogenic bacteria via yielding overwhelming reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, superfluous ROS after therapeutical process may elicit a detrimental effect on subsequent tissue regeneration. To address this tough issue, we innovatively devise a photo-activated copper ferrite (CuFe 2 O 4 ) heterojunction coating on bioinert polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implant through hydrothermal treatment and π-π-π stacking. The heterojunction coatings not only generate localized hyperthermia and ROS upon 808 nm NIR illumination, but also trigger Fenton(-like) reaction and glutathione (GSH) depletion in bacterial infectious microenvironment (IME), all leading to robust and cyclic antibacterial property through synergistic photothermal/photodynamic/chemodynamic therapy. Besides, the decorated implants are demonstrated to show superior cytocompatibility and osteogenic-promoting capability. The mice subcutaneous implantation further confirms the excellent in vivo photo-disinfection. The advantage of the heterojunction coatings lies on its enhancement in tissue generation and osteogenesis after antibacterial dynamic therapy because the liberation of micronutrient element (Cu, Fe) is significantly augmented exposed to NIR light, showing photo-enhanced osteogenicity. As envisaged, this work provides a new strategy to empower PEEK implants with an integrative feature of bacteriostasis and osteogenicity to combat intractable IAI through synergistic photo/Fenton-therapy.
