The low electrical conductivity of Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LVP) impedes its practical application. To address this issue, this study enhances its conductivity by introducing nitrogen-doped carbon nanoframes into LVP. Using phytic acid as a carbon and phosphorus source, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a nitrogen source, nitrogen-doped nanoframe-modified LVP material (LVP@NC) was successfully synthesized. Importantly, the carbon nanoframes of LVP@NC are entirely derived from the precursor’s thermal decomposition, simplifying the synthesis process and reducing production costs. By optimizing the process parameters, significant improvements were achieved in key performance indicators, including the initial discharge capacity at 1C (132.85 mAh·g −1 ), long cycling life at 10C (98.98 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles), and rate capability at 50C (99.65 mAh·g −1 ). These improvements are attributed to the introduction of nitrogen-doped nanoframes, where the high-temperature decomposition of PVP leads to the formation of porous honeycomb-like structures, and nitrogen doping in the nanocarbon framework introduces defects and active sites, thereby promoting lithium-ion migration and facilitating electrolyte penetration. This simple, novel, and energy-efficient method demonstrates significant potential for the large-scale preparation of high-performance cathode materials.

Organic energy storage materials attract extensive attention as a potential alternative for the next generation of lithium ion batteries . However, most of the reported organic electrodes can not achieve a good balance among high capacity, high rate and long cycle-life. In this work, pyromellitic anhydride is adopted as a new anode material for lithium-ion batteries. It exhibits superior electrochemical performances compared to most of the reported organic electrodes. The pyromellitic anhydride anode is able to reversibly deliver a capacity of 1472.2 mAh g −1 at 30 mA g −1 . Even at an extremely high current of 30 A g −1 , the electrode still retains 562.7 mAh g −1 . After a 500 electrochemical cycles at 150 mA g −1 charge and 600 mA g −1 discharge, almost no capacity loss can be observed. The good electrochemical performance of the pyromellitic anhydride anode is because of its excellent lithium conductivity capability, as well as the stable solid electrolyte interface film formed on the electrode.

ABSTRACT Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are one of the most potential candidates for large-scale energy storage due to the low cost and eco-friendliness, however, a stable and reversible anode is urgently developed. In this work, a novel 2 × 2 tunnel-structured K 1.28 Ti 8 O 16 @N-doped carbon nanofibers (KTO@N CNFs) anode is successfully synthesized via simple electrospinning and subsequent thermal treatment with urea acted as the additional convenient nitrogen source. In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement confirms the intercalation reaction mechanism and robust structure during Na + insertion/extraction. This composite material exhibits a reversible capacity of 116.4 mAh g − 1 at a current density of 100 mA g − 1 after 1000 cycles. More impressively, even at a high current density of 1 A g − 1 , the battery delivers capacity retention of 98.4 mAh g − 1 after 5000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the adequate 2 × 2 tunnel structure and the nano-confinement of N-doped nanofibers on K 1.28 Ti 8 O 16 nanocrystals, which offers enough diffusion paths and enhance the ionic diffusion of sodium ions. This work provides a facile strategy to synthesis stable, reversible, and long-cycle anode for sodium-ion batteries.

Potassium-ion hybrid capacitors (PIHCs) show great potential in large-scale energy storage due to the advantages of electrochemical capacitors and potassium-ion batteries. However, their development remains at the preliminary stage and is mainly limited by the kinetic imbalance between the two electrodes. Herein, an architecture of NbSe 2 nanosheets embedded in N, Se co-doped carbon nanofibers (NbSe 2 /NSeCNFs) as flexible, free-standing, and binder-free anodes for PIHCs is reported. The NbSe 2 /NSeCNFs with hierarchically porous structure and N, Se co-doping afford highly efficient channels for fast transportation of potassium ions and electrons during repeated cycling process. Furthermore, excellent electrochemical reversibility of the NbSe 2 /NSeCNFs electrode is demonstrated through in situ XRD, in situ Raman, ex situ transmission electron microscopy and element mapping. Thus, PIHCs with the NbSe 2 /NSeCNFs anode and active carbon cathode achieve a high energy of 145 W h kg −1 at a current density of 50 mA g −1 , as well as an ultra-long cycle life of over 10 000 cycles at a high current density of 2 A g −1 . These results indicate that the assembled PIHCs display great potential for applications in the field of ultra-long cycling energy storage devices.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have garnered considerable interest as potential solutions for large-scale energy storage systems, owing to their cost-effectiveness and high safety. Nonetheless, the development of AZIBs is hindered by significant challenges associated with dendrite growth and side reactions on Zn anodes. Here, a bio-based separator derived from cellulose was developed for the dendrite-free anode in AZIBs. In addition, the separator is notable for its ultra-low cost and biodegradability in contrast to the commonly used commercial glass fiber (GF) separators. The mechanical strength of the separator is enhanced by the cross-linking of hydrogen bonds, effectively inhibiting dendrite growth. The zinc-philic groups facilitate better binding to Zn 2+ , resulting in uniform nucleation and deposition. The hydrophilic groups aid in trapping water molecules, thereby preventing side reactions of the electrolyte. The Zn||Zn symmetric cell with this separator can sustain a long cycle life for over 800 h, indicating stable Zn 2 + plating and stripping with suppressed dendrite growth. Concurrently, the assembled Zn||VO 2 full batteries exhibited a capacity retention rate of 61.87% after 1,000 cycles at 1 A g −1 with an initial capacity of 140 mAh g −1 . This work highlights a stable, economical, and eco-friendly approach to the design of bio-based separators in AZIBs for sustainable energy storage systems.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries have emerged as attractive energy storage devices by virtue of their low cost, high safety and eco-friendliness. However, zinc-ion cathodes are bottlenecked by their vulnerable crystal structures in the process of zinc embedding and significant capacity fading during long-term cycling. Herein, we report the rational and homogeneous regulation of polycrystalline manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanocrystals as zinc cathodes via a surfactant template-assisted strategy. Benefiting from the homogeneous regulation, MnO 2 nanocrystals with an ordered crystal arrangement, including nanorod-like polyvinylpyrrolidone-manganese dioxide (PVP-MnO 2 ), nanowire-like sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate-manganese dioxide and nanodot-like cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-manganese dioxide, are obtained. Among these, the nanorod-like PVP-MnO 2 nanocrystals exhibit stable long-life cycling of 210 mAh g −1 over 180 cycles at a high rate of 0.3 A g −1 and with a high capacity retention of 84% over 850 cycles at a high rate of 1 A g −1 . The good performance of this cathode significantly results from the facile charge and mass transfer at the interface between the electrode and electrolyte, featuring the crystal stability and uniform morphology of the arranged MnO 2 nanocrystals. This work provides crucial insights into the development of advanced MnO 2 cathodes for low-cost and high-performance rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

A flame retardant gel electrolyte (FRGE) is deemed as one of the most promising electrolytes to relieve the problems of safety hazards and interfacial incompatibility of Li metal batteries. Herein, a novel solvent triethyl 2-fluoro-2-phosphonoacetate (TFPA) with outstanding flame retardancy is introduced in the polymer skeleton synthesized by in situ polymerization of the monomer polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and the cross-linker pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PETEA). The FRGE exhibits superb interfacial compatibility with Li metal anodes and inhibits uncontrolled Li dendrite growth. This can be ascribed to the restriction of free phosphate molecules by the polymer skeleton, thus realizing a stable cycling performance over 500 h at 1 mA cm–2 and 1 mAh cm–2 in the Li||Li symmetric cell. In addition, the high ionic conductivity (3.15 mS cm–1) and Li+ transference number (0.47) of the FRGE further enhance the electrochemical performance of the correspondent battery. As a result, the LiFePO4|FRGE|Li cell exhibits excellent long-term cycling life with a capacity retention of 94.6% after 700 cycles. This work points to a new pathway for the practical development of high-safety and high-energy-density Li metal-based batteries.

The development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is severely limited by the shuttle effect and instability of Li-metal anode. Constructing Li-ion S batteries (LISBs), by using more stable commercial graphite (Gr) anode instead of Li-metal, is an effective way to realize long-cycle-life Li-S batteries. However, Gr electrode is usually incompatible with the ether-based electrolytes commonly used for Li-S batteries due to the Li + -ether complex co-intercalation into Gr interlayers. Herein, a solvent molecule structure regulation strategy is provided to weaken the Li + -solvent binding by increasing steric hindrance and electronegativity, to accelerate Li + de-solvation process and prevent Li + -ether complex co-intercalation into Gr anode. Meanwhile, the weakly solvating power of solvent can suppress the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and makes more anions participate in Li + solvation structure to generate a stable anion-derived solid electrolyte interface on Gr surface. Therefore, a LISB coin-cell consisting of lithiated graphite anode and S@C cathode displays a stable capacity of ≈770 mAh g −1 within 200 cycles. Furthermore, an unprecedented practical LISB pouch-cell with a high Gr loading (≈10.5 mg cm −2 ) also delivers a high initial capacity of 802.3 mAh g −1 and releases a stable capacity of 499.1 mAh g −1 with a high Coulombic efficiency (≈95.9%) after 120 cycles.

Niobium-based oxides show great potential as intercalation-type anodes in lithium-ion batteries due to their relatively high theoretical specific capacity. Nevertheless, their electrochemical properties are unsatisfactorily restricted by the poor electronic conductivity. Here, micron-sized Co0.5Nb24.5O62 with multiscale sponge-like structure is synthesized and demonstrated to be a fast-charging anode material. It can deliver a remarkable capacity of 287 mA h g–1 with a safe average working potential of ≈1.55 V vs Li+/Li and a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 91.1% at 0.1C. Owing to the fast electronic/ionic transport derived from the multiscale porous sponge-like structure, Co0.5Nb24.5O62 exhibits a superior rate capability of 142 mA h g–1 even at 10C. In addition, its maximum volume change during the charge/discharge process is determined to be 9.18%, thus exhibiting excellent cycling stability with 75.3% capacity retention even after 3000 cycles at 10C. The LiFePO4//Co0.5Nb24.5O62 full cells also achieve good rate performance of 101 mA h g–1 at 10C, as well as an excellent cycling performance of 81% capacity retention after 1200 cycles at 5C, further proving the promising application prospect of Co0.5Nb24.5O62.

Rechargeable sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN)-based room temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na/SPAN) batteries, which can operate stably at room temperature, are highly sought after due to the high coulombic efficiency, excellent reversibility and cycling stability. However, the practical battery performance of the Na/SPAN system is fundamentally limited by sluggish interfacial kinetics, particularly hindered Na + transport and electron transfer at electrode–electrolyte interface. Herein, this study addresses these challenges through a low-temperature (180 ℃) polymeric carbon encapsulation strategy, which strategically constructs a polyfuran-rich amorphous carbon(AC) coating on SPAN microparticles (SPAN@AC). This synergistic mechanism operates through conjugated backbones that facilitate efficient electron transport, while the dual role of oxygen which providing strong Na + coordination and weak bonding interactions, thereby simultaneously accelerating charge transfer and ion-desolvation kinetics at the interface. These strategies effectively mitigate interfacial kinetic limitations in sodium-ion batteries, resulting in improved cycling durability and rate capability during practical battery testing. Hence, the SPAN@AC electrode delivered a reversible capacity of 400 mAh g −1 composite at 0.2 A g −1 over 500 cycles and 248 mAh g −1 composite at 1 A g −1 over 750 cycles. This study develops a new approach to enhance SPAN’s electrochemical properties, thereby establishing its viability as a high-performance cathode material for practical room temperature sodium-sulfur battery applications.

Although commercial lithium-ion batteries have been widely used in portable electronics and electric vehicles, they are still plagued by the uncontrollable dendritic lithium under extreme conditions. Herein, an efficient strategy is developed to produce a MXene-configured graphite via an electrostatic interaction between MXene and silane coupling agent-modified graphite. Typically, MXene layers are adhered onto the basal plane of graphite, with good preservation of the uncovered lateral edges of graphite, effectively strengthening the adsorption energy of Li + and reducing the lithium nucleation energy barrier. Moreover, the MXene interface possesses good lattice compatibility with Li (110) plane, greatly promoting the homogeneous growth of Li along the preferable plane under extreme conditions. Even at −20 °C, Ah-level pouch cell with MXene-configured graphite electrode delivers a high capacity retention of 93% after 1200 cycles (273 Wh kg −1 ) at 1 C, exceeding lithium-ion batteries with bare graphite electrode (43% capacity retention, 191 Wh kg −1 ).

The development of high energy and power density sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) has attracted increasing interest in the last two decades due to the abundance and cost-effectiveness of sodium resources. Herein, this study developed a self-templating synthetic method to construct MoSe2nanosheets which were intercalated by ZnSe nanoparticles and were anchored on the in situ reduced graphene oxide layers. The thus-fabricated composites exhibited excellent Coulombic efficiency, a remarkable rate capability and an exceptionally long cycle life when being utilized as the anode in SIBs. Specifically, a reversible capacity of 265 mAh g−1was achieved at 20 A g−1, which could be maintained for 6400 cycles. At an ultra-high rate of 30.0 A g−1, the anode retained a capacity of 235 mAh g−1after 9500 cycles. Such a strong performance was attributed to its unique porous structure and synergistic interactions of multi-components. The underlying sodium storage mechanism was further investigated through various techniques such as in situ X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, the galvanostatic intermittent titration method, etc. Overall, this study illustrates the great potential of clad-structured multicomponent hybrids in developing high-performance SIBs.
