Novel fire-resistable PUF/APP/Gelatin composites from wasted PET bottles: Synthesis and processing

Minh Khang Le,Nhat Quang Lam,Viet Hien Le,Hai Vo Thi

Novel polyurethane (PUF)/ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/gelatin (GEL) composites were fabricated by utilizing an oligodiol synthesized via the glycolysis of waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) and incorporating with APP/GEL, achieved through both coating and mixing methods. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and 1 H-nuclear magnetic resonance results confirmed the chemical structure of the oligodiol. The density of the PUF reduced from 71 to 63 g/dm 3 by mixing APP/GEL, which are suitable for lightweight applications. The flame retardancy of the PUF matrix was significantly enhanced under the presence of APP/GEL, achieving a UL-94 rating of HB at 10 wt% loading and V-0 at 20 wt% loading. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a notable increase in char residue, confirming the condensed phase mechanism of APP/GEL within the PUF matrix.

Ethical Dimensions of App Designs: A Case Study of Photo- and Video-Editing Apps

Xiaobo Wang,Baotong Gu

This article presents an ethnographic study on the user experience (UX) design of the photo- and video-editing apps of millennial and Generation Z participants from different cultural groups. The case study calls attention to the implications of rhetorical misrepresentations of reality that photo- and video-editing apps afford and encourages future large-scale studies on the negative psychological and behavioral impacts such apps can have on users’ psychology, behaviors, and well-being. The authors use frameworks in virtue ethics to argue that despite slight variations, photo and video app UX has ethical implications that can negatively impact young adult users. For example, the study suggests that the photo and video app features tend to subvert the traditional Chinese virtues of modesty, honesty, and the middle way and that hyperbolic and playful designs can cause addictive behaviors.

Ying Zhan,Huizi Lin,Jiawang Xiang,Bing Zhang,Zhihuan Zhao,Jianying Lin,Jing Li,Yan Cheng

A sensitive strategy for nitrite detection (NO 2 − ) by read-out photoresponsive biosensing platform was developed based on smartphone APP. The biosensing platform was constructed based on the colorimetric reaction of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by photooxidation. When nitrite was added, the diazotization reaction taken place with a color change from blue to green and finally to yellow. The reaction process between TMBox and NO 2 − was carried out on the low-cost filter paper modified with chitosan. And the color imaging is collected by smartphone APP. The APP is coded on the Android Studio and operated on android phone, which can realize multi-channel color analysis. Finally, nitrite was quantitatively analyzed by the developed smartphone APP. The biosensing platform not only exhibits a good specificity and sensitivity for detection of NO 2 − , but holds the advantage of low-cost and portable, which has broad application prospects in drug quality safety supervision.

APP/GNP aerogel-enhanced layered phase change composites for multi-scenario energy conversion and storage

Chao Shu,Hao-Yu Zhao,Xiao-Hang Lu,Xia Sun,Ji Liu,Xiaofeng Li,Zhong-Zhen Yu

To address low thermal conductivity, flammability, and leakage issues inherent in organic phase change materials, 3D thermally conductive and flame retardant self-supporting skeletons with layered structures are constructed on the basis of the synergistic assembly effect of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) flame retardant and thermally conductive graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The resultant APP/GNP aerogels can impart superior flame retardancy and shape stability to phase change materials. Benefiting from the continuous layered thermally conductive networks, the phase change composite achieves a high thermal conductivity of 8.75 W m −1  K −1 at a low GNP content of 6.49 vol%. The high-performance phase change composite features dual-mode energy conversion capabilities that synergistically combine electric- and solar-thermal conversion for continuous thermal energy harvesting, storage, and release. It can be integrated into solar-thermal-electric energy conversion systems to achieve full-chain efficient solar energy conversion and day-night continuous power generation. The output voltage of the designed solar-thermal power generator can reach 2042.3 mV under the solar irradiation of 12 kW m −2 . This work provides a feasible strategy for designing high-performance multifunctional phase change composites and advancing next-generation energy conversion systems.

Integrated Smartphone-App-Chip System for On-Site Parts-Per-Billion-Level Colorimetric Quantitation of Aflatoxins

Xiaochun Li,Fan Yang,Jessica X. H. Wong,Hua-Zhong Yu

We demonstrate herein an integrated, smartphone-app-chip (SPAC) system for on-site quantitation of food toxins, as demonstrated with aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), at parts-per-billion (ppb) level in food products. The detection is based on an indirect competitive immunoassay fabricated on a transparent plastic chip with the assistance of a microfluidic channel plate. A 3D-printed optical accessory attached to a smartphone is adapted to align the assay chip and to provide uniform illumination for imaging, with which high-quality images of the assay chip are captured by the smartphone camera and directly processed using a custom-developed Android app. The performance of this smartphone-based detection system was tested using both spiked and moldy corn samples; consistent results with conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits were obtained. The achieved detection limit (3 ± 1 ppb, equivalent to μg/kg) and dynamic response range (0.5–250 ppb) meet the requested testing standards set by authorities in China and North America. We envision that the integrated SPAC system promises to be a simple and accurate method of food toxin quantitation, bringing much benefit for rapid on-site screening.

Synthesis of MgAl-LDH from three alkali sources for boosting flame retardancy of EP with APP

Cui Baoyu,Cui Jiehu,Liu Chang,Fang Jiamin,Wang Shuxia,Du Xiuhong,Li Zhen

Epoxy resin (EP) is used in construction materials due to its low curing shrinkage, excellent chemical stability, and mechanical properties. However, its flammability limits applications in the field of construction. Co-precipitation method with sodium hydroxide as the alkali source and hydrothermal method with urea as the alkali source are the common ways to prepare MgAl-LDH. In this study, MgAl-LDH1 (abbreviated as LDH1) was prepared by using NaOH as the alkali source at 65 ℃ for 12 h, MgAl-LDH2 (abbreviated as LDH2) by using urea as the alkali source at 120 ℃ for 12 h, and MgAl-LDH3 (abbreviated as LDH3) was prepared by using triethanolamine as the alkali source at 100 ℃ for 2 h. Then, LDH1, LDH2, LDH3 were compounded with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to synergistically enhance the flame retardant properties of EP (Composite material abbreviated as LDH1-APP-EP, LDH2-APP-EP, LDH3-APP-EP). The results showed that the best flame retardant effect was achieved after compounding APP (5 wt%) with LDH3 (5 wt%) prepared with triethanolamine as the alkali source. Compared with Pure-EP, the peak exothermic rate and peak smoke production rate of LDH3-APP-EP prepared with triethanolamine as the alkali source decreased by 74.54 % and 67.44 %, respectively. Compared with LDH prepared with NaOH and urea as the alkali source, LDH prepared with triethanolamine as the alkali source has a larger layer spacing and a higher weight loss percentage which releases more gases, moisture, and carbon layers formed by triethanolamine during the combustion process to reduce the heat release from the fire. It’s evident that LDH3-APP-EP prepared with triethanolamine as the alkali source has higher residual carbon densities and the lowest residual carbon values based on SEM and Raman test results. This result proves that the LDH3 with triethanolamine as the alkali source has a good effect on EP flame retardation in this paper which provided a new way to design new efficient flame retardants.

Extract of Danggui-Shaoyao-San ameliorates cognition deficits by regulating DHA metabolism in APP/PS1 mice

Jiawen Huang,Xiangyu Wang,Liyuan Xie,Mingan Wu,Wei Zhao,Yongbin Zhang,Qi Wang,Limei Yao,Weirong Li

Ethnopharmacological relevance The traditional Chinese medicine formula Danggui-Shaoyao-San (DSS) has been reported to show therapeutic effect on alleviating the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Aim of the study The present study aims to investigate the relation between DSS treatment of AD and DHA metabolism and evaluates its neuroprotective effect on cognitive in APP/PS1 mice. Material and methods DSS (1.6, 3.2, 6.4 g/kg/day) or Aricept (3 mg/kg/day) was orally administered (i.g.) to APP/PS1 mice, and saline was orally administered to Wild-type (WT) male mice as control group. Then, the Morris water maze (MWM) test, Y-maze spontaneous alternation test, open filed test and fear conditioning test were conducted for evaluation of learning and memory abilities. The DHA content was assessed by HPLC-MS/MS. Physiological indices were determined, including triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), ROS level, activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), PEG2, TXB2 and LTB4. The expressions of COX-1, COX-2, cPLA2 , iPLA2, 15-LOX, and were assessed by Western blot . Results APP/PS1 mice showed serious cognitive impairment in behavioral tests. However, treatment of DSS extract significantly ameliorated the cognitive deficits of APP/PS1 mice. Biochemical measurements showed the increases in TG, TC, LDL-c and the decrease in HDL-c in APP/PS1 mice compared with WT mice, and DSS extract significantly retarded these changes. Low content of DHA, low expression of iPLA2 and 15-LOX were observed both in hippocampus and cortex of APP/PS1 mice, while DSS extract significantly restored these changes. Additionally, the abnormal activity of SOD and ROS level, the decreased levels of MDA and GSH were observed in APP/PS1 mice, while DSS extract prominently lessened these changes. Moreover, DSS extract decreased the level of PEG2, TXB2 and LTB4 and also attenuated the expression of cPLA2, COX-1 and COX-2 in hippocampus as well as cortex of APP/PS1 mice. Conclusions Based on these results, we suggest that DSS play a positive effective role in increasing DHA content by up-regulating iPLA2 and 15-LOX, resulting in ameliorating oxidative stress and inflammation and finally ameliorating cognition deficits in APP/PS1 mice.

Honokiol improves cognitive impairment in APP/PS1 mice through activating mitophagy and mitochondrial unfolded protein response

Mingyue Hou,Wenfang Bao,Yuanyuan Gao,Jiayue Chen,Guijun Song

Activated mitophagy and mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR mt ) has been reported to protect against mitochondrial dysfunction, which is closely related to the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Honokiol (HKL, C 18 H 18 O 2 ) is a kind of natural extraction from bark of Magnolia offi cinalis with anti-AD effect, and our study aims to explore the effect of HKL on mitophagy and UPR mt in AD. Briefly, male APP/PS1 mice and Aβ oligmer (AβO)-treated primary hippocampal neurons were respectively used to mimic AD in vivo and in vitro. It was determined that HKL significantly ameliorated cognitive impairment and synaptic damages in APP/PS1 mice. Besides, the activated mitophagy and UPR mt together with inhibited oxidative stress and improved mitochondrial dynamic disorder were further validated in hippocampus of HKL-treated APP/PS1 mice. Meanwhile, HKL-treated mice displayed much higher hippocampal expression and activity of mitochondrial sirtuin 3 (SIRT3). Therefore, SIRT3 knockdown was further achieved in primary hippocampal neurons by effective shRNA , and we determined that HKL improved synaptic damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, mitophagy and UPR mt in AβO-treated primary hippocampal neurons in a SIRT3-dependent manner. In summary, our study validates the protective effect of HKL on AD, and highlights that HKL exerts anti-AD effect by activating mitophagy and UPR mt .

Metformin Restores Innate Fear Deficits in Young Adult Female APP/PS1 Mice via Basolateral Amygdala Activation

Zhang Bin,Bian Weiming,Zhu Kaiyuan,Dai Yuzhen,Cai Miao,Cheng Jiaqi,Chen Xinyan,Xiang Zheng,Liu Yixiu,Lu Wen

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and neuropsychiatric symptoms, among which impaired fear responses are particularly notable. While studies have established that learned fear is compromised in AD, the status of innate fear in this context remains unclear. We found that young adult female APP/PS1 mice exhibited reduced freezing and avoidance responses to 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT) compared to their wild-type littermates, indicating an impaired innate fear response. Additionally, c-Fos-positive cells in the basolateral amygdala (BLA), a key region for fear processing, were significantly lower in the APP/PS1 mice. Notably, metformin treatment significantly restored TMT-induced freezing behavior and increased c-Fos-positive cells in the BLA, suggesting that it can reverse the innate fear deficit in this AD model. Mechanistically, chemogenetic inactivation of the BLA abolished the therapeutic effects of metformin on the innate fear deficit. Our study suggests metformin as a promising candidate for therapeutic intervention aimed at improving innate fear-related behavioral deficits in AD.

Self-assembling ferritin nanoplatform enables amyloid-β-targeted immunotherapy and cognitive rescue in APP/PS1 mice

Jiaxin Liu,Chenxing Zhang,Lan Zhao,Rui Liu,Tianxin Cao,Daining Zhang,Zhenjiang Liu,Dong Sun,Yong Zhang,Xianghui Yu,Wei Kong,Hui Wu

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressively neurodegenerative disorder. The accumulation and pathological aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides are key events in the occurrence and progression of AD, positioning Aβ-targeted immunotherapy as a precision therapeutic approach. We present a click chemistry-assisted modular nanoparticle vaccine, Fe-Spy-3CAβ, constructed via SpyCatcher-SpyTag-mediated site-specific conjugation of Aβ1-6 epitopes onto engineered ferritin nanocages. This self-assembling nanoparticle vaccine elicited enhanced immunogenicity in APPswe/PSEN1dE9 transgenic mice, generating high-titer antibodies that specifically recognize neurotoxic Aβ42 oligomers. The vaccine promotes robust clearance of Aβ plaques in the cortical and hippocampal regions while rescuing spatial memory deficits. Notably, sex-specific differences are observed in pathological clearance and behavioral improvements, with male mice exhibiting better cognitive performance and reduced neuroinflammation compared to female counterparts, highlighting sex-specific differences in AD progression. Further immunization of rhesus monkeys confirmed the potent immunogenicity and favorable safety of Ferritin-based Aβ vaccine. Critically, serum antibodies from vaccinated monkeys specifically bound Aβ plaques in AD model mouse brain tissues.   Our modular nanoassembly platform overcomes key limitations of conventional AD vaccines regarding immune activation efficiency and safety profiles, while offering a versatile approach for developing immunotherapies for neurodegenerative diseases.

Microbiota-derived metabolite Indoles induced aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation and inhibited neuroinflammation in APP/PS1 mice

Jing Sun,Yuhe Zhang,Yu Kong,Tao Ye,Qingxia Yu,Senthil Kumaran Satyanarayanan,Kuan-Pin Su,Jiaming Liu

Gut microbiota alterations might affect the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) through microbiota-derived metabolites. For example, microbiota-derived Indoles via tryptophan metabolism prevented Aβ accumulation and Tau hyperphosphorylation, restored synaptic plasticity, and then promoted the cognitive and behavioral ability of APP/PS1 mice. The imbalanced compositions of Indoles-producing bacteria with tryptophan deficiency were found in male APP/PS1 mice, but the molecular mechanisms remained unclear. Our current study revealed that Indoles (including indole, indole-3-acetic acid and indole-3-propionic acid) upregulated the production of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), inhibited the activation of the NF-κB signal pathway as well as the formation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, reduced the release of inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and IL-18, alleviating the inflammatory response of APP/PS1 mice. These findings demonstrated the roles of Indoles-producing bacteria in activating the AhR pathway to regulate neuroinflammation of AD through gut microbiota-derived Indoles, which implied a novel way for AD treatment.

Enhancing the safety of lithium-ion batteries: synthesis and performance evaluation of APP@UF microcapsule electrolyte additives

Tianyu Zhou,Zhixiang Xing,Longtai Qi,Yecheng Liu

A B S T R A C T Ammonium polyphosphate was successfully encapsulated within a urea-formaldehyde resin shell via in-situ polymerization, yielding flame-retardant microcapsules. The synthesized microcapsules exhibited effective flame retardancy, as confirmed by various characterization techniques and ignition tests. The synthesized flame-retardant microcapsules (APP@UF) were uniformly integrated into the electrolyte matrix and subsequently assembled into electrochemical cells for performance evaluation. During thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, the internal temperature escalates. Upon reaching 210 °C, the microcapsule shell undergoes rupture, releasing APP to suppress the thermal runaway reactions within the battery, thereby achieving lithium-ion battery safety based on the concept of active protection. Furthermore, the microcapsules demonstrated stable dispersion in commercial lithium-ion electrolytes. Coin cells were assembled using electrolyte mixtures containing varying mass fractions of the microcapsules. At an addition level of 2 wt%, the battery retained 85.52 % of its capacity after 100 cycles under constant current charge-discharge conditions. The incorporation of microcapsules enhances battery safety without compromising electrochemical performance, presenting a viable strategy for improving the initial safety of lithium-ion batteries during thermal runaway.
