To enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance of silver-based catalysts in anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), a novel Co@Ag–AgCl core–shell-structured needle-like nanowire catalyst was synthesized via a polyol-solvothermal method using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as a surfactant. The results showed that when the CTAC concentration was 5 times the critical micelle concentration, the needle-like nanowires had the best dispersibility, and the synergistic interaction between the Ag–AgCl composite shell and cobalt core significantly enhanced the catalytic performance. The Co@Ag–AgCl3/C catalyst demonstrated exceptional ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.753 V, a limiting current density of 4.580 mA cm–2, and an electron transfer number close to 4 (3.88). Remarkably, during 10,000 cycles of durability testing (0.3–1.0 V vs RHE), the half-wave potential of the catalyst only shifted negatively by 17 mV, demonstrating better stability than commercial Pt/C (with a negative shift of 18 mV). This work provides critical insights for developing cost-effective non-platinum catalysts in AEMFCs.

The removal of ammonia (NH 3 ) emitted from agricultural and industrial activities is of great significance to protect human health and ecological environment. Photocatalytic NH 3 oxidation to N 2 under mild conditions is a promising strategy. However, developing visible light photocatalysts for NH 3 oxidation is still in its infancy. Here, we fabricate N-TiO 2 and Ag/AgCl/N-TiO 2 photocatalysts by sol-gel and photodeposition methods, respectively. The introduction of N not only endows TiO 2 with visible light response (absorption edge at 460 nm) but also results in the formation of heterophase junction (anatase and rutile). Thus, N-TiO 2 shows 2.0 and 1.8 times higher than those over anatase TiO 2 and commercial TiO 2 for NH 3 oxidation under full spectrum irradiation. Meanwhile, surface modification of Ag can simultaneously enhance visible light absorption (generating localized surface plasmon resonance effect) and charge separation efficiency. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of Ag/AgCl/N-TiO 2 is further improved. Furthermore, the presence of N and Ag also enhances the selectivity of N 2 product owing to the change of reaction pathway. This work simultaneously regulates photocatalytic conversion efficiency and product selectivity, providing some guidance for developing highly efficient photocatalysts for NH 3 elimination.

Metal-semiconductor compounds, such as Ag@AgX (X = Cl, Br, I), enable visible light absorption and separation of photogenerated electron–hole through surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. However, the electron–hole generated and separated by light are vulnerable in Ag@AgX phase because of the occurrence of secondary recombined. In order to more effectively utilize the SPR photocatalytic effect, a heterojunction interface electric field was implemented effectively by introducing some cost-effective semiconductor materials with wide band gap to Ag@AgX compound, thereby preventing photogenerated electrons from secondarily compounding with the holes. In this article, by mixing 500 nm diameter ZnO and Ag@AgX compounds with mole ratio 1:1, studies show that 15 min illumination under visible light can complete degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), and indicate a high stability of photocatalytic degradation. Through Mott–Schottky plots and photoinduced I – t curve, the results show that through the ZnO/Ag@AgCl composition, heterojunction interface electric field can be formed effectively, thus increasing the separation efficiency and transfer speed of photogenerated electrons and holes, and improving the photocatalytic performance. Meanwhile, Ag@AgCl can implement the photosensitization of ZnO with high efficiency through SPR effect, which will enlarge the response range of photocatalyst to the visible area.

The abuse of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) has created great threats to both human health and the ecosystem. Therefore, developing efficient technologies to remediate these contaminants is of significant and practical interest. In this work, a ternary plasmonic Ag/AgCl@In2O3 nanocomposite was synthesized by growing AgCl on the surface of one-dimensional In2O3 nanorods, followed by the in situ photoreduction of Ag from AgCl on AgCl@In2O3. The as-synthesized Ag/AgCl@In2O3 nanocomposite exhibits excellent performance for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TTC) with a degradation rate constant of 0.166 min−1, which is much better than that of pristine In2O3, Ag@In2O3, AgCl@In2O3, Ag/AgCl, and In2O3 + Ag/AgCl (the mechanical mixture of In2O3 and Ag/AgCl) samples. Five photocatalytic cycling tests demonstrate that Ag/AgCl@In2O3 possesses outstanding stability. In addition, Ag/AgCl@In2O3 also exhibits excellent photo-activity for the degradation of other types of tetracycline antibiotics, e.g. chlortetracycline (CTC) and oxytetracycline (OTC). Further trapping experiments prove that h+ and ˙O2− are responsible for the photocatalytic reactions. The enhancement in the photoactivity of the Ag/AgCl@In2O3 system is largely due to the surface plasmon resonance effect (SPR) provided by the Ag nanoparticles, which inject electrons into AgCl and/or In2O3, and the efficient separation of photoinduced carriers is possible by transferring electrons to the conduction band of In2O3. This work provides a new type of photocatalyst towards the effective treatment of tetracycline antibiotics in aqueous systems.

The conventional heterogeneous Fenton reaction is often confined by the lower regeneration of Fe 2+ , which then inhibits the decomposition of H 2 O 2 and the generation of OH. Here we propose a novel idea to significantly accelerate the redox cycling of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in heterogeneous Fenton reaction by introducing photo-generated electrons from plasmonic particles. Towards this aim, novel plasmonic Ag/AgCl nanoparticles coated ferrihydrite (Ag/AgCl/Fh) have been synthesized. Compared with pure Fh, a remarkable enhancement in the photo-Fenton degradation towards bisphenol (BPA) can be observed for all Ag/AgCl/Fh samples under visible light. Noticeably, the rate constant of 6%Ag/AgCl/Fh is 0.0506 min −1 , which is about 5.1 times as high as that of pure Fh (0.0099 min −1 ). Moreover, the catalytic activity of 6%Ag/AgCl/Fh on the degradation of BPA remains quite efficient with a low Fe leaching after 4 recycles. The results of the effect of initial pH indicates that Ag/AgCl/Fh samples exhibit relatively high photo-Fenton catalytic activity even at pH 6. The electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis reveals that OH plays a significant role in the photo-Fenton reaction. The concentration of OH can even reach 267.6 μmol/L after 60 min, which is much higher than that of pure Fh (69.2 μmol/L). The measurement of Fe 2+ concentration and the XPS Fe2p spectra of Ag/AgCl/Fh before and after the degradation of BPA indicate the loading of Ag/AgCl can accelerate the conversion of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ by the photo generated electrons from Ag nanoparticles due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect under the visible light irradiation.

A label-free colorimetric biosensor based on Au@Ag@AgCl core-shell nanomaterials has been developed. The biosensor operated through a unique mechanism where Au@Ag@AgCl nanoparticles were progressively etched by ammonia produced during urease-catalyzed urea decomposition. This etching process induced a distinct color transition of the colloidal solution from orange to pink and ultimately to red, enabling quantitative determination of urease concentration. The multi-core-shell design of Au@Ag@AgCl provided highly enriched color gradients and significantly enhanced visual resolution, achieving a detection limit of 0.147 U/mL, which was 85 times lower than that of the commercial urease test strips. Notably, the assay required no complex surface modifications or separation procedures, offering high operational simplicity which could be accomplished within 15 min. All these advantages greatly facilitated in-situ and in-time detection of urease. Finally, this assay was applied to the detection of simulated saliva samples with recoveries ranging from 104.4% to 123.0%, thereby validating its robust anti-interference capability and potential application in practice. Thus, the proposed Au@Ag@AgCl core-shell nanostructure-based label-free biosensor might provide a rapid, quantitative, and user-friendly alternative approach for monitoring Heliobacter pylori infection. Silver/silver halides (Ag/AgX, X = Cl, Br, I)-based photocatalysts with tunable energetic synergies have attracted intensive attention in solar-energy-conversion. Herein, we introduce an appealing ternary Au/Ag/AgCl nanochain with short curvilinear necklace-like nanoarchitectures via an ingenious one-step strategy by pulsed laser irradiation of metallic ions in solution. Compared with binary Ag/AgCl nanoparticles (NPs), the ternary nanochains with stronger intermetallic synergy exhibit improved absorbance capacity and enhanced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) under broad visible-light irradiation. Then, the Au/Ag/AgCl nanochains can obviously accelerate photoinduced electron transfer and boost the separation of electron-hole on their surfaces, providing an excellent photocatalytic activity towards degradation of methylene blue (MB). Meanwhile, the enhanced synergistic coupling effect of the ternary nanocomposites also enables them to inhibit the photocorrosion under visible-light irradiation. Interestingly, compared to monodisperse NPs, the Au/Ag/AgCl nanochains with numerous interconnected NPs can be self-deposited on the bottom of solution after each photocatalytic reaction. Without the aid of extra and complicated nanocatalyst-separation procedures, then the clear-water will be easily obtained. Therefore, the unique photocatalyst possesses pronounced long-term stability, since ~ 97.6% photodegradation rate can be maintained after 14 recycling tests within two weeks. Undoubtedly, these findings will bring new opportunities to prepare high-performance photocatalysts for diverse practical applications.

Silver nanoparticles (NPs) and related semiconductors are a family of very important and widely applied photocatalysts. However, the preparation of high stability and activity of this photocatalyst is still a challenge. In this work, we report a stable Ag/AgCl/AgBi(MoO 4 ) 2 heterojunction photocatalyst fabricated via a simple in situ anion-exchange reaction followed by the photoreduction treatment. In the treatment of tetracycline (TC) wastewater under visible light, the AC-0.4 sample (prepared with 0.4 mmol KCl) exhibits the significantly improved activity (degradation ratio, DR of 71.3%) compared with the pristine AgBi(MoO 4 ) 2 (30% DR) and Ag/AgCl sample (synthesized by the photoreduction of AgCl) (37% DR) under identical experimental conditions. This activity promotion is from the fast interfacial electron transfer between the heterojunction phases of AgCl/AgBi(MoO 4 ) 2 and the SPR effect of Ag NPs. After five successive recycles, the AC-0.4 sample still maintains good stability and activity for TC degradation, which shows a great potential to be used in practical application. Through the ESR and controlled scavenged experiments, we found the • OH and • O 2 − are the major reactive intermediate species in the TC photodegradation reaction. Our work provides a new insight into the synthesis of stable and high efficient Ag-based heterojunction photocatalysts for the application of wastewater treatment.

Magnetic catalysts (Ag/AgCl/(x)FeX) were fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method followed by a precipitation–photo-reduction method. The Ag/AgCl/(x)FeX catalysts were applied to activate persulfate (PS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The degradation efficiencies of the Ag/AgCl/(x)FeX–PS system for TC removal were high due to the enhanced adsorptive capacity of (x)FeX, extended absorbance in the visible-light region and improved space separation of photo-induced charge carriers. The Ag/AgCl/(0.05)FeX catalyst exhibited better performance for TC removal compared with the other samples and complete degradation of TC could be achieved in 120 min by using 1 g L−1 Ag/AgCl/(0.05)FeX and 5.0 mM PS at pH 3.5. The characterization of the catalysts and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) studies indicated that TC was mainly degraded by surface-adsorbed radicals resulting from the reaction between PS and Fe(II) on the catalysts under visible light. The Ag/AgCl/(x)FeX–PS system provides new insights for contaminant removal from water.

Membrane technology is one of the most promising technologies for wastewater remedy. However, it remains challenging to prepare high-performance membrane matrix for complex pollutants, e.g. containing both oil and organic dye. In this work, we facilely fabricate a cellulose-fiber-supported MOF photocatalytic membrane, namely Ag@AgCl@MIL-100(Fe)/CCF, which was prepared via carboxymethylation of cotton fabric (CCF) as scaffold and in-situ synthesis of MOF derivative as photocatalyst. The carboxymethylation significantly improves the hydrophilicity of cotton fabric and the deposition amount of MIL-100(Fe). The high hydrophilicity of modified CCF and porous MIL-100(Fe) further enable the membrane with an efficient adsorption capacity of dyes and underwater oleophobicity against oils. The photocatalysts Ag@AgCl nanoparticles anchored onto MIL-100(Fe) promote the photocatalytic activity. As a result, the membrane shows simultaneous high removal efficiency towards dyes (97.3 %) and oils (99.64 %). Additionally, thanks to the good photocatalytic activity against organic pollutants, the membrane exhibits excellent self-cleaning and a long-term reuse capacity.

Different fusiform-shaped MIL-88A materials were successfully prepared by adjusting the mole ratio of the central metal ion and the organic ligand and using different polar solvents. With differently shaped MIL-88A supports, several Ag/AgCl@MIL-88A (ACML) were prepared successfully using the in situ growth method. These ACML composites showed a good photocatalytic activity under the simulated sunlight and visible light. The employment of Cl− ions, anchored on the surface of MIL-88A, could improve the dispersion and stability of the loaded Ag/AgCl nanoparticles. The s-ACML composite showed excellent photocatalytic stability during the cycle tests. The in situ growth strategy provided a facile method to design and synthesize MOF composite photocatalysts for wastewater treatment. In addition, based on the related optical and electrical characterization analysis, a possible mechanism of the ACML composite photocatalytic activity was proposed.

Wearable electrophysiological interfaces demand bioelectrodes that combine low-impedance, stable ion-electron transduction with high mechanical deformability, yet these requirements remain fundamentally incompatible in existing systems. Here, we present a nonpolarizable stretchable dry electrode based on a bead-on-string Ag/AgCl heterostructure, in which AgCl nanoparticles (NPs) are selectively assembled along percolated silver nanowire networks embedded within an elastomer matrix. This architecture spatially decouples Faradaic reaction sites from conductive pathways, constructing abundant, mechanically robust Ag/AgCl heterointerfaces for efficient ion-electron transduction while preserving continuous electron transport under large deformation. By systematically tuning the size of AgCl NPs (50-800 nm), the spatial distribution and interfacial length scale of Faradaic domains are optimized to maximize electrochemical performance. The resulting electrode achieves ultralow interfacial impedance (49 kΩ, 10 Hz), stable electrode potentials, and tolerance to severe mechanical deformation (ε > 370%), with minimal degradation over 500 stretch cycles. It enables low-noise, high-fidelity signal acquisition in the low-frequency regime, effectively suppressing motion artifacts and maintaining stable operation over 120 days of storage in air. When integrated with a spatiotemporal neural network for electrooculography decoding, the system achieves 98% accuracy in hands-free game control, demonstrating a robust paradigm for next-generation wearable bioelectronics.
