Synergistic Photonic Sintering of Robust Cu@AgNWs for Environmentally Stable Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and High-Response Thermal Management

Li Zhenfeng,Zhao Yifan,Shao Jianhang,Wang Zixu,Li Jinyang,He Peng,Zhang Shuye

Copper nanowires (CuNWs) present a promising low-cost alternative to indium tin oxide for next-generation flexible electronics. However, their widespread use is hindered by their natural tendency to oxidize and the difficulty of establishing effective interwire connections on thermally sensitive substrates. Here, we introduce durable, oxidation-resistant transparent conductive films (FTCFs) made from Cu@Ag core–shell nanowires, produced through a pulsed photonic sintering process. Combined multiphysics simulations and systematic experiments reveal that the innovation of this work lies in a synergistic photonic-sintering mechanism rather than in the separate use of Cu@AgNWs, transparent heating, or electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. During the short-pulse treatment, localized photothermal activation promotes nanowire junction welding, while transient softening of the PI surface enables partial nanowire embedding and interfacial anchoring. This coupled mechanism integrates Ag-shell-enabled oxidation resistance, low-resistance welded junctions, substrate-assisted mechanical stability, transparent EMI shielding, and rapid low-voltage electrothermal response in one Cu-based flexible transparent conductive film. This architecture simultaneously provides excellent electrical conductivity and strong interfacial adhesion without damaging the structure. As a result, these optimized FTCFs achieve a competitive sheet resistance of 16.9 Ω/sq at 81.6% transmittance and demonstrate remarkable stability under mechanical stress and environmental conditions. Showing versatile multifunctionality, the films exhibit effective X-band EMI shielding performance (up to 39 dB) and function as transparent heaters with rapid low-voltage electrothermal response, reaching a temperature increase of more than 70 ° C at 3 V and showing fast switching-induced temperature variation within the 1 s acquisition interval. This work offers a scalable, mechanism-based approach for producing high-performance Cu-based FTCFs, emphasizing their great potential in advanced high-frequency shielding and wearable thermal management.

Atomistic insights into thermal degradation and multifunctional design of layer-by-layer assembled PA/PEI/AgNWs cotton fabrics

Gang Tang,Zhen Zhang,Wenhao Li,Mingjie Guo,Ying Pan,Wei Wang,Tingxuan Yan,Lulu Xu,Dong Wang,Fan Wu,Xiuyu Liu

Modern environments impose complex safety requirements on textiles. Therefore, developing multifunctional textiles with integrated flame retardancy, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and antibacterial properties is of great significance. In this study, a robust ternary P/N/Ag nanocoating was constructed on cotton fabrics via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of phytic acid (PA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), followed by the impregnation of a silver nanowire (AgNW) conductive network. This hierarchical architecture endowed the cotton fabric with exceptional multifunctionality. The optimized composite fabric exhibited superior fire safety, achieving a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of up to 49.8% and a 91.7% reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR). Mechanistic investigation revealed that the AgNWs act as reinforcing skeletons within the intumescent char layer, significantly enhancing the condensed-phase barrier effect against heat and oxygen. Furthermore, the construction of a highly conductive network resulted in a low sheet resistance of 2.09 Ω·mm and an EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 32.65 dB in the X-band. Additionally, the functionalized fabric demonstrated excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance (Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) > 130) and strong antibacterial activity, with a 99.9% reduction rate against both E. coli and S. aureus . This work provides a facile and effective strategy for fabricating high-performance multifunctional textiles with promising applications in personal protection and smart electronics.

Self-supporting ultra-thin sandwich-structured ANFs-PVA/AgNWs films with flame-retardant and electromagnetic interference shielding performance

Ziqing Jiang,Hao Zhang,Di Gao,Xinbo Jiang,Yan Zhang,Yihao Yu,Dongming Qi,Jianming Wang,Guangyong Zheng

Due to electronic product miniaturization and acceleration, electromagnetic radiation and thermal accumulation issues are prominent, posing risks to nearby devices and individuals. Developing thin polymer films to block electromagnetic radiation and prevent fires is crucial for smaller, faster electronics. In this study, we successfully fabricated a unique self-supporting ultra-thin sandwich-structured film named ANFs-PVA/AgNWs (APAg), which exhibited exceptional performance in both electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and flame retardancy. The introduction of inner AgNWs layer resulted in significant EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) at X-band frequencies, achieving an impressive 47.01 dB with a loading of only 0.10 mg/cm 2 , effectively blocking 99.99 % of electromagnetic waves (EMWs). The ANFs-PVA layers were adopted as the flexible outer layer, endowing the films with excellent flame retardance and good mechanical support due to the high heat resistance of aramid nanofibers (ANFs) as well as the strong hydrogen bonding interaction between ANFs and PVA. The film demonstrated self-extinguishing behavior in vertical burning tests, achieving a flame-retardant rating of V-0. Furthermore, the sandwich structure provides high durability for the EMI shielding performance of the films under different conditions. This study presents a novel approach for fabricating high-performance polymer-based EMI shielding films that hold great potential for applications in electronics and communication technologies.

Ying Lu,Hui Sun,Jinyu Cheng,Jokwang Myong,Hasan Md Mehedi,Gajanan Bhat,Bin Yu

Flexible strain sensors have attracted wide attention to the field of applications on wearable electronic devices. However, they still have numerous defects, such as low linearity and low sensitivity. In this paper, high-elastic polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) melt-blown non-woven fabric (MB) was chosen as the substrate of the strain sensor. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) were loaded on the PBT MB surface by simple ultrasonic treatments to form a dense and stable conductive path. The sensing properties of the sensors loaded with the different concentration load ratios of rGO and AgNWs were studied and the best load ratio was 1:0.9. The results showed that the sensor has excellent sensing characteristics, including wide range of applications (90 %), extremely high sensitivity (guage factor (GF) up to 1829 at 80 % strain). Finally, the strain sensor has demonstrated in monitoring an assortment of human-exercises even some subtle physiological signals.

Yan Tao,Tao Xiaole,Lei Hong,Ma Shidong,He Bin,Wu Yuting,Pan Zhijuan

Flexible multi-functional yarn plays a significant role in the development of flexible wearable devices. In this work, the influence of the components of silver nanowires (AgNWs) with two different lengths, their assembly methods with polyurethane (TPU), the spraying volume of AgNWs and the pre-stretching process on the sensing performance were systematically investigated to develop TPU/AgNWs strain sensing yarn (TASY). The synchronous optimization of multi-functions was achieved by establishing Janus asymmetric conductive networks. The Janus composite nanofiber membrane showed an outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding performance with around 40 dB and high shielding efficiency of 99.99%. The strain range of TASY can reach 122%, and the gauge factor within the linear interval of 0–80% was 37.34 with the high linearity of 0.984. Meanwhile, bending and twisting deformations can also be effectively detected. In addition, TASY can reach a temperature of 108 ℃ at a low voltage of 1.4 V. The linear relationship between temperature and the square of voltage was as high as 0.998. The power density was greater than 4500 W/m 2 . The high stability was achieved for Joule heating and strain sensing. The excellent comprehensive performance can provide support to develop the multi-functional wearable electronics. Yuehong Zhang,Ruijing Liu,Siqi Zhao,Langlang Dai,Chen Yang,Bin Wei,Bin Lyu

The development of sustainable dual-mode flexible sensors with self-healing ability, reprocessability, and multifunctionality holds promise for the future wearable technology. Herein, a bio-based waterborne polyurethane (BSWPU) was synthesized from a vanillin-derived polyol and castor oil, using butanedione dioxime (DMG) as a chain extender. The incorporation of dynamic Schiff base and oxime-carbamate bonds endowed BSWPU with high mechanical properties (tensile strength: 8.6 MPa, elongation at break: 242.5%), high healing efficiency (94%), thermal remoldability, and chemical degradability under alkaline conditions, supporting its suitability as a substrate for flexible sensors. Furthermore, an MXene/AgNWs conductive network was integrated onto the BSWPU substrate to fabricate a dual-mode pressure-humidity sensor. With 20 wt % MXene, the sensor exhibited a pressure sensitivity of 43.29 kPa–1 and a humidity-induced resistance change of 37.8%. The sensor was able to detect stimuli ranging from large-scale joint movements to subtle facial expressions and to distinguish humidity variations associated with different breathing patterns and motion states. It also enabled encoded signal transmission via Morse code. In addition, the sensor showed thermally assisted self-healing and alkali-triggered chemical degradability. Overall, this work offers a feasible strategy for constructing more sustainable self-healing dual-mode flexible sensors for wearable electronics.

Low off-state current density in vertical organic field-effect transistors via AgNWs/TiO2 interface modification for neuromorphic devices

Huihuang Yang,Youshan Bi,Yujie Yan,Cong Liu,Yuling Wang,Daoqi Fang,Shuhui Mu,Chunbin Cao,Yuan Rao,Yaqian Liu,Fangxu Yang,Xiumei Wang

With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and the internet of things, neuromorphic computing, which mimics the efficient and low-power information processing of biological brains, has emerged as a pivotal direction for transcending conventional computing paradigms. Notably, a high on/off current ratio in OFET-based neuromorphic devices provides a broader, more precise synaptic weight dynamic range and distinguishable conductance states, enabling fine weight modulation and improved complex pattern recognition accuracy. The vertical organic field-effect transistor (VOFET) is regarded as a promising device architecture for building high-density, low-power neuromorphic systems, owing to its inherent nanoscale vertical channel. However, in VOFETs, the three-dimensional interface and the ultrashort channel formed between the mesh source electrode and the semiconductor layer often lead to high off-state current density and poor output saturation characteristics, which fundamentally limit device performance and neuromorphic application. Therefore, an interface optimization strategy by spray-depositing a titanium dioxide (TiO2) modification layer onto the surface of the silver nanowire (AgNW) mesh source electrode is proposed to successfully fabricate VOFET devices with low off-state current density (5.0 × 10−7 mA cm−2), high on–off ratio (∼2.8 × 106) and well-saturated output characteristics. Furthermore, an optoelectronic neuromorphic device with an AgNWs/TiO2&PDVT-10/TiO2 heterojunction structure is constructed. The device successfully emulates diverse synaptic behaviors and achieves an ultra-low power consumption of 0.235 fJ, yielding a recognition accuracy of 93.64% for banana ripeness classification based on a convolutional neural network. The VOFET interface optimization strategy provides a practical and feasible route toward high-performance neuromorphic devices, showing great promise for advancing the development of ultra-low-power intelligent computing systems.

AgNWs self-assembly along coaxially electrospun SEBS-PVP core-sheath fibers for stretchable conductive membranes with low interfacial losses

Xiaoyan Li,Jixiang Zhu,Wei Peng,Chunfa Ye,Tianyu Cang,Ming Li,Longqi Zhao,Deng-Guang Yu

In this paper, core-sheath fibers with poly(styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene) triblock copolymer (SEBS) as the core layer and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) of different molecular weights as the sheath layer were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. Amphiphilic triblock copolymers were added to the SEBS core layer, and the fusion of incompatible SEBS-PVP at the core-sheath interface was further promoted by appropriate solvent post-treatment. Polydopamine (PDA) was in situ polymerized on the surface of SEBS-PVP fibers, so that silver nanowires (AgNWs) with high aspect ratios were conformally self-assembled along the fibers to form good interfacial bonding, so that the SEBS-PVP/AgNW composite membrane has high conductivity and exhibits good interfacial transfer effect in cyclic stretching under large strain. Based on core-sheath nanofibers and self-assembly, the excellent interfacial transfer gives SEBS-PVP/AgNW low viscoelastic loss, integrated large tensile strain sensing and stable Joule heating effect, which is conducive to the development and application of multifunctional stretchable electronics.

Synthesis of AgNWs using copper bromide as stabilizing agent and oxygen scavenger and their application in conductive thin films

Shah Fahad,Haojie Yu,Li Wang,Jinhua Liu,Songbiao Li,Junchao Fu,Bilal Ul Amin,Rizwan Ullah Khan,Sahid Mehmood,Fazal Haq,Wang Nan,Muhammad Usman

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attracted growing interest because of their wide range of applications in modern nano electronic appliances. During polyol method, the presence of cations and anions in the reaction solution has influence on the final morphology of AgNWs. Here we report a feasible way to prepare AgNWs by polyol method. Copper bromide (CuBr 2 ) salt was used to provide anions and cations in the reaction solution. The anions (Br − ) helps in reducing the amount of free Ag + by forming silver bromide (AgBr) during initial silver seeds formation and the cations scavenge oxygen from the surface of AgNWs during preferential growth of the AgNWs. Ethylene glycol (EG) was used as a solvent and reducing agent, silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) was used as Ag source and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a capping agent. The effects of various factors which influence the final morphology of AgNWs were studied. AgNWs were successfully synthesized in the presence of CuBr 2 salt. The morphology of the synthesized AgNWs was characterized by the SEM and TEM. The crystallinity was characterized by HRTEM, SAED and XRD . The LSPR peaks of Ag nanostructures were revealed by UV–Vis spectroscopy. The conductive properties of AgNWs thin conductive films were studied by coating the synthesized nanowires on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate.

Synthesis of AgNWs Using High Molecular Weight PVP As a Capping Agent and Their Application in Conductive Thin Films

Fahad Shah,Yu Haojie,Wang Li,Wang Yang,Lin Tengfei,Amin Bilal Ul,Naveed Kaleem-Ur-Rahman,Khan Rizwan Ullah,Mehmood Sahid,Haq Fazal,Xing Yusheng,Usman Muhammad

High molecular weight polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and seeding conditions are considered to have important roles in the synthesis of AgNWs. In this work, we report a versatile synthesis of AgNWs in a salt-free environment and under Ar inert atmosphere using high molecular weight PVP and seeding step during the synthetic process. The high molecular weight PVP was found to efficiently promote the preparation of AgNWs via supporting the proper growth control of AgNWs on {111} facets and selective growth on {100} facets. The seeding step facilitates the formation of seeds such as multiple twinned nanoparticles (MTPs) and single crystal seeds, which promoted the feasible formation of AgNWs. The shape and size of the synthesized AgNWs were characterized by SEM and TEM. The crystalline nature of the synthesized AgNWs was characterized by HRTEM, SAED and XRD, and their LSPR peaks were confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The conductive properties of the synthesized AgNWs were determined by preparing their thin conductive film on a PET substrate. The prepared AgNWs thin films exhibited good sheet resistance.

Haiyu Xu,Dongning Liu,Yiheng Song,Yuanyuan Xie,Zhuqun Shi,Chuanxi Xiong,Quanling Yang

With the rapid development of the electronic information industry, more attention has been paid to the application of flexible wearable electronic devices in the fields of health care, human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. However, the development of the electronic information industry inevitably brings electromagnetic radiation pollution, and electronic skin (E-skin) with electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) can provide extra protection. Here, we used 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) to form TOCN/AgNWs/TOCN/AgNWs multilayer composite hydrogel film for preparing the flexible E-skin. The prepared E-skin exhibited ultra-high sensitivity (5.1 kPa −1 ), extremely fast response time (≤10 ms), excellent stability (>12000 cycles), high antibacterial rate (≥99.99%) and low detecting limit (0.48 Pa). The E-skin achieved a high EMI SE of 20 dB with a transmittance of 86.7%. These excellent properties of the flexible E−skin make it have great application potential in the future.
