Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) consisting of bentonites are used worldwide for the containment of hazardous landfill leachates . However, the swelling of bentonite in aggressive leachates is suppressed, which critically decreases GCLs' barrier performance. This study proposed a polymerization method to prepare calcium-bentonite (CaB)/polymer nanocomposites for high performance GCLs under aggressive conditions. The CaB was successfully intercalated and grafted by salt resistant poly (acrylic acid-2-acryl amido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid-N, N′-methylene bis(acrylamide)) (abbreviated as P(AA-AMPS-MBA)) networks, leading to layered structures in the resulting nanocomposites. The swell index of P(AA-AMPS-MBA)@CaB in coal combustion product (CCP) leachate ( I = 178 mM) was increased by 2.1 times relative to that of pristine CaB. Consequently, the P(AA-AMPS-MBA)@CaB exhibited excellent barrier property, with hydraulic conductivity to CCP leachate ( K CCP = 6✕10 −12 m/s) being four and one orders of magnitude lower than that of pristine CaB and the US standard for GCLs, respectively. In addition, polymer elution of P(AA-AMPS-MBA)@CaB is only 0.15% that of the control sample prepared by traditional physical mixing method.

The hydrophobic property and structure of Na-bentonite (Na-bent) were tuned by intercalation with cationic surfactants for lipase adsorption. The adsorption isotherms of lipase on Na-bent and modified bentonites demonstrated Langmuir-type shape, and Na-bent showed higher adsorption efficiency than modified bentonites. The observed overlap of lipase molecules on the support and the interactions between these molecules under high protein loading caused the reduction in the activity of immobilized lipase. The immobilized lipases on modified bentonites (Bent-DTAB-lipase, Bent-CTAB-lipase, and Bent-OTAB-lipase) exhibited higher catalytic activity than that on Na-bent, due to the hydrophobically interfacial activation of modified bentonites toward lipase. The highest catalytic activity and stability were observed on Bent-CTAB-lipase, resulting from the tunable hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of the support’s surface, while the excessive hydrophobic property showed negative influence on lipase’s catalytic performance. The immobilized lipases onto modified bentonites with hydrophobic property showed higher thermal stability and reusability than Na-bent-lipase.

Magnetic bentonite (MBent) was modified by both amphoteric surfactant (BS) and cationic surfactant (CT). The structural characteristics of BS-CT-MBent were explored along with the factors primarily influencing their effectiveness in phenol sorption . The results indicated that BS-CT-MBent showed high separation potential and good stability. The carbon contents of BS-CT-MBent increased while specific surface areas decreased with increasing the BS and CT loading level. The sorption capacities of BS-CT-MBent for phenol (198.74–205.81 mmol kg −1 ) were improved compared to MBent (16.34 mmol kg −1 ). The phenol sorption capacities on BS-CT-MBent increased with an increase of BS or CT loading level, while the phenol sorption efficiency decreased at high BS and CT loading level. The phenol sorption capacities decreased with an increase of pH, temperature and with a decrease of background electrolyte concentration . Hydrophobic phases formed by surfactants were the main phenol sorption domains and the hydrophobic partition was the key mechanism.

3D macroporous chitosan-bentonite foam composite was fabricated via ice-templating. • Bisphenol capture is governed by hydrogen bonding and polar interactions. • BPS preferentially engages –NH sites via its –SO 2 – group revealed by FTIR. • Efficient bisphenol removal was achieved across diverse real water matrices. • Preliminary capture of heavy metals and microplastics was also demonstrated. Bisphenols (BPA, BPF and BPS) are emerging contaminants with well-documented endocrine-disrupting effects, and their environmental occurrence often coincides with heavy metals and microplastics. In this study, a three-dimensional chitosan/bentonite composite foam (CBF) was fabricated via directional ice-templating and systematically evaluated as a recoverable adsorbent for bisphenols. The CBF exhibited stable adsorption performance, with kinetics following the pseudo-second-order model and isotherms well described by the Langmuir model, achieving moderate maximum capacities of 13.69 to 16.27 mg/g under a monolithic, manually recoverable design. High removal efficiencies were maintained over a wide pH range (2.0–10.0) and under varying ionic strength conditions. Spectroscopic and thermodynamic analyses indicate that bisphenol adsorption is governed by hydrogen bonding, polar interactions, and pore confinement effects, with selectivity among analogues modulated by their analogue-specific interaction pathways with the functional groups of CBF. The positive enthalpy change and increasingly negative Gibbs free energy further support a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process. Preliminary tests further indicated that the macroporous framework was capable of capturing heavy metal ions (Pb(II), Cd(II)) and physically entrapping representative microplastics (PLA, PS, PE), suggesting potential applicability beyond bisphenols. Within its intended design scope of prioritizing operational simplicity over maximum capacity, CBF offers a monolithic platform with facile manual separation and minimal secondary turbidity. This combination of low-cost raw materials, monolithic recoverability, and multi-class pollutant applicability distinguishes CBF from conventional powdered adsorbents and is relevant to the practical treatment of bisphenol contaminated water under complex matrix conditions. To address the environmental challenges posed by phenol emissions in coal chemical wastewater, this study developed a polyanionic cellulose (PAC)-modified calcium bentonite-biochar composite (PB4%-C8%) with integrated adsorption-cutoff functionality. The composite was synthesized using calcium bentonite (CaB), PAC (4 wt %), and corn stalk biochar (8 wt %), and characterized via XRD, SEM-BET, and FTIR. PB4%-C8% exhibited a 188.3% increase in specific surface area (56.712 m2/g) compared to CaB (19.674 m2/g). Under phenol concentrations of 100–400 mg/L, PB4%-C8% demonstrated low permeability (1.0 × 10−12–1.0 × 10−10 m/s), meeting cutoff wall standards (<1 × 10−9 m/s). At pH 8 and a dosage of 5.0 g/L, it achieved beyond 70% phenol removal from 100 mg/L solutions, with adsorption behavior well-described by the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9975) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.9921), yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 15.48 mg/g. After four regeneration cycles, the removal efficiency remained at 56.5%, confirming structural stability. The synergistic effects of PAC (enhancing swelling and chemical resistance) and biochar (providing adsorption sites) endowed PB4%-C8% with dual adsorption-cutoff capabilities, offering a sustainable solution for phenol wastewater treatment and contaminated site remediation.

Colloids are prevalent in nuclear waste repositories, with bentonite colloids posing an uncontrollable risk factor for nuclide migration processes. In this study, static adsorption experiments were coupled with dynamic shower experiments to comprehensively investigate the influence of bentonite colloids on \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) migration in granite, considering adsorption capacity. Bentonite colloids have a considerably greater adsorption capacity than both bentonite and granite, with a maximum adsorption of 30.303 mg/g. The adsorption behavior of bentonite colloids on \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) is well described by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, indicating that a single-layer chemical adsorption process is controlled by the site activation energy. The adsorbed \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) is unevenly distributed on the colloids, and the adsorption mechanism may involve ion exchange with Ca. Bentonite colloids exhibit superior adsorption in neutral environments. The cations in groundwater inhibit \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) adsorption, and the inhibition efficacy decreases in the order \({\hbox {Fe}^{3+}}>{\hbox {Ca}^{2+}}>{\hbox {Mg}^{2+}}>{\hbox {K}^+}\) . The presence of bentonite colloids in a granite column slightly influences the retention of \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) in the column while markedly reducing the \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) penetration time from 70 h to 18 h. However, the coexistence of \({\hbox {Co}^{2+}}\) , \({\hbox {Ni}^{2+}}\) , and \({\hbox {Cs}^{+}}\) in a multinuclide system weakens the ability of the colloids to promote \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) migration. In comigration of colloid and multinuclide systems, the adsorption of nuclides by bentonite colloids causes the nuclide migration speed to decrease in the order \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) > \({\hbox {Cs}^{+}}\) > \({\hbox {Ni}^{2+}}\) > \({\hbox {Co}^{2+}}\) . This study provides insights into \({\hbox {Sr}^{2+}}\) migration in cave repositories for low- and medium-level radioactive waste.

Seawater uranium extraction is a key technology for environmental sustainability with significant potential applications. For the first time, this work synthesized a CTAB/Bent-MOF808 with strong stability, abundant coordination functional groups, and low cost, and assessed its adsorption effectiveness for U (VI) in carbonate solutions. The study explores how pH, contact time, uranium concentration, temperature, carbonate, halide salts, phosphorus, and Ca/Mg ions influence uranium adsorption, with a focus on mechanistic insights through characterization and modeling. Under optimal conditions (temperature of 25 °C, pH 8.0, with a sodium bicarbonate concentration of 2 mmol L −1 and a U(VI) concentration of 50 mg L −1 ), which are similar to the real seawater environment, CTAB/Bent-MOF808 demonstrated superior uranium adsorption performance compared to MOF808 and CTAB/Bent in U(VI)–CO 3 solutions. Under high initial pH, NaHCO 3 , Ca/Mg ions, and halide ion concentrations, the complex's uranium adsorption capacity and removal rate are reduced due to competitive adsorption between ions, as well as increased electrostatic repulsion on the surface. The sorption process was identified as monolayer homogeneous chemical adsorption process by analyzing it with quasi second order kinetic models and Langmuir isotherm models. The inhibitory effect of halide ions is as follows: I − > F − > Br − > Cl − . XPS suggested that the complexation of bromide anion with –COOH and electrostatic attraction could be crucial processes for uranium adsorption. This study offers theoretical insights into uranium extraction from natural uranium-bearing waters and highlights the expanded potential of MOF-based adsorbents in this process, enhancing both efficiency and application scope.

The rapid development of mineral resources exploitation and industries has brought a large amount of wastewater containing cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) to the environment. Among these, the mining industry has become a major challenge in wastewater treatment due to the coexistence of both pollutants at high concentrations. Developing a sustainable and low-cost adsorbent capable of simultaneously adsorbing both anionic and cationic pollutants is a key breakthrough direction for solving this practical problem. In this study, chitosan-grafted Fe-pillared bentonite (CS@Fe@Bt) was synthesized using natural bentonite, aiming to provide an efficient material for treating Cd and As co-contaminated wastewater (especially mining industry wastewater). Results suggested that the specific surface area (SSA) and total pore volume of Fe-pillared bentonite increased by 1.85 and 1.32 times, respectively, compared with the raw bentonite. Pillaring the bentonite also significantly enhanced its chitosan loading capacity, improving both the structural stability and adsorption performance of CS@Fe@Bt. Kinetic and isothermal adsorption experiments revealed that CS@Fe@Bt possessed a multilayer heterogeneous surface, with Cd and As adsorption following the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. CS@Fe@Bt showed strong adsorption capacity for both Cd(II) and As(III) when the initial pH i of the solution ranged from 6 to 8. The maximum adsorption capacities ( Q m ) for Cd(II) and As(III) were 80.79 mg·g -1 and 34.90 mg·g -1 , respectively, surpassing most comparable adsorbents. The primary adsorption mechanisms of CS@Fe@Bt in Cd(II) and As(III) co-polluted water included oxidation (57.81% of As(III) was converted to low-toxicity As(V)), electrostatic interactions, and the formation of B-type ternary surface complexes (CS@Fe@Bt-As-Cd). Additional mechanisms included ion exchange, pore adsorption. These findings highlight the potential of CS@Fe@Bt as an effective adsorbent for Cd(II) and As(III) adsorption, providing technical support for addressing practical wastewater treatment challenges.

The application of chitosan (CS) film in active food packaging fields is greatly limited by their poor strength , antioxidant and barrier properties. Two nanoparticles , lignosulfonate (SLS) and bentonite (BT), were used together to enhance the food packaging properties of CS composite films in this work. A dense and robust multifunctional bio-based nanocomposite film with a pearl-like structure was successfully prepared. Results indicated that the introduction of SLS substantially better the strength, antioxidant, and UV-shielding capacities of CS composite film. The maximum tensile strength of the obtained nanocomposite film (SLS/BT/CS) reached 1.9 times of pure CS film. The SLS gave the composite film an excellent UV-shielding property (between 6.18–0.14% (T UVA ) and 0.32–0.06% (T UVB ) at 10–40 wt% SLS). The total phenolic hydroxyl group content of the composite film was significantly increased after adding SLS, and the DPPH· scavenging ability of SLS/BT/CS film was 5 times better than that of BT/CS film. The addition of BT bent the water vapor transport path in the film and created a hydrophobic surface , which in turn led to a significantly better water vapor barrier performance of SLS/BT/CS than pure CS films. The results of this work showed the great application potential of SLS/BT/CS nanocomposite film in the food packaging fields.

Fe3+ modified bentonite was firstly prepared by ion change method and Fe2+ modified bentonite was then synthesized by reduction of Fe3+-bentonite. The modified bentonites were characterized with XRD and SEM. The adsorption ability of Tetracycline (TC) of Fe3+-bentonite and Fe2+-bentonite was compared with raw bentonite. The catalytic activity of two Fe-bentonites used as heterogeneous Fenton catalyst are also examined. The resulted shows that both of Fe3+-bentonite and Fe2+-bentonite exhibited superior removal performance of TC. The removal capacities of Fe3+-bentonite and Fe2+-bentonite in the 400 mg/L TC solution reached 98.15% and 96.55%, respectively. The Fe3+-bentonite and Fe2+-bentonite remains 75% removal abilities after 3 rounds under Fenton condition. The mechanisms of adsorption and Fenton degradation of Fe modified bentonite were also discussed.

In this work, composite hydrogel beads based on magnetic bentonite/carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate (Mag-Ben/CCS/Alg) were fabricated and their ability to adsorb copper ions in water was studied. The structure and properties of the composite were characterized via SEM, FTIR, XPS, TGA , VSM, and Zeta potential tests. The effects of the adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, pH, temperature, and initial concentration of Cu(II) on the adsorption results were studied. The results showed that Mag-Ben/CCS/Alg reached equilibrium after 90 min of adsorption, the removal rate of Cu(II) was 92.62 ± 0.39%, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 56.79 mg/g (30 °C). The removal rate of Cu(II) by Mag-Ben/CCS/Alg still remained above 80% after recycling four times. The adsorption process of Cu(II) by Mag-Ben/CCS/Alg occurred in accordance with the quasi-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic.

A new environment-friendly bentonite intercalation composite was successfully obtained from alumina sol intercalation. This process used industrial grade pseudo boehmite as the aluminum source and provided with the advantage of zero emission of acidic wastewater. The bentonite intercalation composite was investigated by XRF, ICP, XRD, FT-IR, BET, and pyridine-FTIR. Results indicated that the basal spacing was enlarged from 14.72 to 15.60 Å; the specific surface area increased by 128%; and the total acid content increased from 65.32 to 245.76 μmol/g. The catalytic activity of this composite was tested by alkylation of aromatics with olefins. The results show that the weak Lewis acid generated by extra-framework aluminum and specific surface area play a decisive role, while weak Brønsted acid site is not the active site for this alkylation reaction.
