To address the limitations of traditional pesticide detection methods, including reliance on costly equipment, operational complexity, and time-consuming procedures, an AuNPs-modified Photonic Crystal (AuPC) microfluidic chip is proposed for sensitive and rapid detection of acetamiprid and myclobutanil. A Photonic Crystal (PC) sensor functionalized with AuNPs was developed. Numerical simulations revealed that AuNPs modification significantly enhanced localized electric field intensities, generating high-density electromagnetic hotspots in microsphere gaps, with a maximum field enhancement of 4.8-fold compared to unmodified counterparts. The sensor demonstrated a detection limit of 10−4 g L−1 for both analytes, with linear concentration-dependent spectral red shifts (R2 > 0.96) observed across 1 g L−1 to 10−4 g L−1. Sensitivity enhancement was achieved through synergistic photonic-plasmonic interactions, and a microfluidic-integrated PC platform was constructed, enabling efficient pesticide residue screening.

High-speed and accuracy identification of pathogens has become increasingly critical in both individual patient care and public health. Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensors enable simultaneous identification of multiple pathogens. However, there are still problems such as low accuracy and limited diversity in bacterial fingerprints. To this end, we present a novel multi-branch adaptive attention convolutional neural network (MBAA-CNN)-assisted paper-based SERS chip for prompt and reliable pathogen discrimination. In the approach, we employed a dual-function molecule 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) to capture bacteria and enhance Raman spectra diversity, referring as 4-MPBA labeled mode (label mode). Meanwhile, we utilized the K -means algorithm to identify pathogens in the label mode, producing much higher accuracy compared to label-free mode ( n = 2000). Furthermore, we acquired 98.6 % accuracy at all pathogen species and 99.5 % accuracy at the antibiotic-resistant and sensitive strains ( n = 10,000) using MBAA-CNN. The superior performance of MBAA-CNN was further validated through comparisons with traditional machine learning models, particularly in terms of loss value, speed and accuracy. We envision the developed approach has potential for early culture-free diagnosis of pathogens and real-time monitoring of microbial contamination in water environment.

Conventional anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) face challenges in achieving reliable vertical electrical interconnections under low bonding pressure, particularly for small-sized dies and flexible substrates, due to their reliance on rigid conductive particles requiring high-pressure bonding. Liquid metal (LM), with high conductivity and intrinsic flexibility, offer promise for next-generation flexible electronics but suffer from leakage and corrosion risks. Here, a core-shell structured LM@Ag microsphere is synthesized via in-situ chemical reduction, featuring a deformable LM core encapsulated by a robust Ag shell. This design effectively mitigates LM leakage while combining high electrical conductivity of 2.94 × 10 5 S m −1 and pressure-adaptive deformability. When incorporated into epoxy resin (Ep) mixture, the LM@Ag/Ep-ACA enables stable electrical interconnections under a low bonding pressure of 1 N for radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag packaging with small-sized chip of 0.186 mm 2 . The LM@Ag-based ACA also achieve robust chip shear strength of 53.98 ± 3.06 MPa, and maintain functionality after 85 °C/85 % RH test for 168 h and 100 thermal shock cycles ranging from −40 °C to 85 °C. The synergistic integration of metallic conductivity and mechanical compliance in LM@Ag microspheres opens avenues for advanced flexible electronics, particularly in applications demanding pressure-sensitive reliability and dynamic durability.

Hypertension, the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and premature mortality, is characterized by increased vessel stretch and alterations in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). In this study, a vessel-on-a-chip model is developed to simulate both physiological and pathological stretch conditions alongside a mouse model of hypertension. Proteomics analysis is applied to investigate changes in VSMCs using the vessel-on-a-chip system and compared these findings with data from the mouse model. The results demonstrates that physiological stretch enhances the expression of contractile markers in VSMCs. Additionally, the chip effectively replicates cellular responses to pathological stretch and stress, including the upregulation of ERK signaling, calcium ion transport pathway, integrin signaling pathway, endoplasmic reticulum stress, toll-like receptor activation, oxidative stress, and synthesis of sphingolipids and ceramides. These findings indicate that the vessel chip successfully mimics in vivo biological events associated with hypertension. The vessel-on-a-chip system holds promise for advancing the study of vessel-related diseases and facilitating the development of novel hypertension therapeutics.

The emerging internet of things requires autonomous and ubiquitous on-chip devices with wireless interconnectivity. On-chip power is required to meet the miniaturization requirement, and an integrated on-chip micro-supercapacitor has enormous potential to meet this requirement owing to its high-power density and long cycle life. However, the two-dimensional expansion of the current co-planer design paradigm of micro-supercapacitors, such as the interdigital layout, hinders the on-chip integration density, resulting in a significant consumption of precious chip footprint and an insufficient energy density. This article reports on the use of a three-dimensional framework along with a hybrid printing strategy to fabricate devices entirely without any post-processing, and highly integrated three-dimensional micro-supercapacitors were printed as proof of concept. The micro-supercapacitors exhibit more than 25 times areal capacitance than the interdigital ones (76 mF/cm 2 vs 2.9 mF/cm 2 ) due to their three-dimensional feature. Moreover, it can provide new functions to achieve adjustable voltage and capacitance flexibility within one device's footprint area. This approach can also enable devices on different substrates. An ultraviolet sensor was integrated with and powered by the three-dimensional micro-supercapacitors on polyimide to demonstrate the compact on-chip application. The three-dimensional framework offers a general solution to the on-chip integration challenges of micro-supercapacitors. Moreover, it can be extended to new materials or even other electronics units, highlighting the promise of further miniaturized and powerful micro-electronics.

To overcome thermal bottlenecks in high–heat-flux chip cooling, we develop a programmable interfacial nanofluid (CuO@APTES/L-cysteine/SSA) through surface molecular engineering integrated with a multiscale framework spanning material synthesis, density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD), microchannel experiments, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) validation. DFT calculations confirm robust interfacial stability enabled by Si–O–Cu anchoring, yielding a total binding energy of −33.48 eV. Spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations verify ordered multilayer functionalization, defining a grafting maximum load (GML) of 174.97% and excellent dispersion stability (zeta potential up to +59 mV). At 358.15 K and 2.5 vol%, the nanofluid achieves a thermal conductivity of 1.517 W/m·K (138.5% enhancement over water), significantly exceeding Maxwell predictions, with the optimized S30.4 formulation reaching 1.79 W/m·K. Molecular-level analysis reveals a transition from passive to programmable interfacial heat transport, characterized by enhanced Cu O radial distribution functions, increased coordination numbers, and strengthened Si O and O S heat-transfer pathways. Microchannel experiments demonstrate a 14.7% reduction in junction temperature and a 17.3% improvement in temperature uniformity at 10 W/cm 2 , accompanied by reduced thermal resistance and improved convective heat transfer. CFD predictions agree well with experiments (deviation <1.5%) and confirm superior cooling performance up to 10,000 W/cm 2 with only a modest pressure-drop penalty. Thereby establishing a validated multiscale framework that provides predictive insight into interfacial heat transport and guides the design of advanced nanofluids for high–heat-flux electronic cooling.

In this work, we have developed a novel pneumatic microfluidic chip (pChip) for in-vivo antibacterials screening at single-organism resolution using a P. aeruginosa-C. elegans infection model. To improve the accuracy and efficiency of nematode infection-based drug screening, we designed a pneumatic-controlled micro-sampler that enables simultaneous dispensing of a large number of individual free-moving worms into each culture chamber under physiological conditions without any mechanical squeezing, and the average probability of a single worm in a chamber is 88.5%, with RSD of 2.8%. Furthermore, we proposed an effective liquid P. aeruginosa - C. elegans infection model based on microfluidic chip, and the performance of the platform was verified with multiple clinical antibiotics. By applying this developed worm pChip to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of some natural medicinal compounds (coptisine, baicalin and gypenoside), we found that gypenoside can increase the P. aeruginosa infected worm survival by 2.3-fold at 30.0 μg/mL, whereas it does not suppress pathogen growth in vitro . It indicates that the well-established pneumatic chip will be an efficient platform for evaluation of antibacterial potential of medicinal natural compounds.

The low electrical conductivity of nickel–cobalt layered oxides and single Ni, Co metal oxides led to the low rate capability and poor cycling stability, which thus limits the commercial application in practical supercapacitor. Here, NiCoO 2 /WCC composite electrode materials were prepared by employing wood chips carbon (WCC) with the high specific surface area and low cost as the conductive layer, where hierarchical spherical structure of laminar NiCoO 2 interspersed as homogeneous and was oriented and constructed on the surface of carbon by hydrothermal and calcination. The strategy provided abundant frameworks and active sites for the in situ growth of NiCoO 2 , which prevented the aggregation of spherical structures to a certain extent; furthermore, the layered spherical structure exposed more active sites, which thus enhanced the electrochemical performance of the capacitor. The NiCoO 2 /WCC electrode ( R Ni:Co = 1) possessed a high specific capacitance of 1053.6 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 due to the synergistic effect between the bimetallic oxide and WCC, and the specific capacitance of the electrode remained 906 F g −1 even at a high current density of 10 A g −1 by the lamellar structure with more electrochemical sites. In addition, the asymmetric supercapacitor based on the NiCoO 2 /WCC cathode and the WCC anode delivers a high specific capacitance of 134.4 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , a high specific energy of 36.6 Wh kg −1 at 1 A g −1 , and good cycling performance (~ 94.3% retention after 5000 cycles), where the above properties were superior to existing and similar electrode materials.

Liquid–liquid solvent extraction is frequently used in the purification of active ingredients from plants, and repeated extraction by different solvents with different polarity is often demanded to improve purity. According to this demand, two kinds of laminar flow extraction were designed on the microfluidic chip, i.e. a three-phase laminar chip and a successive laminar flow chip, and compared with a current two-phase chip. P. ginseng was used as a model plant to demonstrate extraction performance, and ether and n -butanol were used as the degrease solvent and extraction solvent, respectively. The results demonstrated that the extraction efficiency of a successive laminar flow chip is higher than that of a three-phase laminar flow chip, and that of both chips are higher than that of a two-phase chip. The chip method provided a new way to extract active ingredients from plants, which should be easily automated and integrated with other units to develop a complex system for sample preparation and ingredient detection.

The tubularlike three-dimensional tissue scaffold is an important architecture in biomedical engineering, but its construction remains a big challenge for existing techniques. This work reports the polysaccharide-biomaterial-based tubular microcapsule, which was fabricated by integrating a co-axial flow microfluidic chip and a polyelectrolyte complex technique. First, we fabricate the densely packed coiled calcium alginate hydrogel microfibers as the building block by a co-axial microfluid chip. Then, the densely packed coiled microfibers were coated with a multilayer membrane through layer-by-layer adsorption of alginate and chitosan. After that, the microfibers with an alginate–chitosan–alginate membrane were expanded and transformed into a tubular microcapsule structure by liquefaction. The tubular microcapsule exhibits a selectively permeable property of different-molecular-weight FITC-dextran/bovine serum albumin compared with original calcium alginate microfibers. Moreover, the tubular microcapsule with a liquefied lumen and a thin membrane allows the sustainable release of encapsulants under the alkaline environment. Our research paves an alternative way of manufacturing artificial biological tube architectures having potential applications for transporting and delivering drugs.

This paper reports on a chip cooling solution using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based microfluidic devices filled withn-Octadecane. A thick SU-8 layer of 150 µm is used as the master mold for patterning PDMS fabrication. With the SU-8 mold, patterns with straight lines at microscale have been fabricated with standard micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology. Thermal polymer bonding technique is used to bond the PDMS pattern directly to a flat polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film which results in the sealed microchannels.n-Octadecane as a phase-change material has been successfully filled in the microchannels using a dispensing machine. Infrared thermal image shows a sharp contrast of the temperature distribution between the chip withn-Octadecane and the empty chip during the same heating process. This result indicates an efficient cooling performance of the microchannel device with phase-change material. A thermal stimulation test demonstrates that a 16 °C-lower temperature difference can be achieved. This microchannel device, benefited from the flexibility of PDMS substrate, shows specific advantages in meeting the need for the heat dissipation of flexible electronics such as flexible displays, electronic skins, and wearable electronics. Latent heat of the phase-change material can keep the temperature of devices relatively lower over a period of time, which shows potential application values on discontinuously active flexible electronic devices.Keywords:MEMS;polymer;micro-channel device;phase-change material;chip cooling;thermal management;flexible electronics

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) employs a gold (Au) thin film (ca. 50 nm in thickness) chip to generate a surface plasmonic wave (SPW) for in situ monitoring of the interface/surface, which makes it intrinsically compatible with electrochemistry for combined electrochemical surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) investigations. However, conventional SPR Au chips suffers from a high background signal, narrow electrochemical window, and limited electrochemical stability. Presented in this work is a novel SPR chip composed of the Au/long-chain alkane thiol self-assembled monolayer/single-layer graphene (Au/SAM/G) sandwich architecture to address these problems. On this chip, the single-layer graphene serves as a working electrode for electrochemical measurement, and the underlying Au film serves as the SPW support for SPR monitoring; the sandwiched thiol monolayer enables the electrical separation of the graphene and Au film to protect the Au film from electrochemical polarization. Our experiment indicates that the electrochemical window of such a chip extends beyond the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction potential on Au with significantly improved electrochemical stability and suppressed background signal. Moreover, its intrinsic SPR sensitivity is completely reserved even compared to that of the conventional SPR Au chip. This Au/SAM/G chip may offer a valuable solution to the EC-SPR investigations in harsh conditions.
