Multilayer materials attracted intense scientific interests in view of their special interlayer structure and potential application in diverse fields. Different from the conventional approach of layer-by-layer assembly, in this study we proposed an engineering approach of layer-by-layer curing from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer and rigid cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). The covalent-bonding from the crosslinking curing reaction as the driving force ensured the strong interlayers adhesion, and meanwhile the nanoreinforcing effect from silylated CNC in the composite layers provided the tailor-made physicochemical properties for the fabricated multilayer membranes. The multilayer structures indicating the good interlayers' adhesion and structural integrity of the di- and tri-layer membranes were observed from the microscopy characterization. In comparison with the monolayer PDMS membrane, the developed CPC trilayer membrane (possessing the sandwiched structure of two composite layers and one neat layer) exhibited the advancement on the storage modulus , special optical scattering and hazing, dielectric permittivity and barrier performance, derived from the nanoscaled reinforcing and obstruction effects of rod-like natural nanoparticles (Si CNC).

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been perceived as a valuable tool in ensuring food safety due to its rapid and intuitive nature. In this study, we demonstrate a novel cellulose-ZIF-8-noble metal nanostructure as a SERS substrate for the analysis of pesticide residues in food. Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) acting as a scaffold, we systematically integrate ZIF-8 and Ag nanoparticles to fabricate tailored necklace-like CNC/ZIF-8/Ag core/shell nanostructures. SERS analysis reveals the CNC/ZIF-8/Ag presents an high enhancement factor of 6.39 × 10 4 , a low limit of detection (LOD) of 10 −9 mol/L, and a relative standard deviation of 10.24 % across 20 substrate batches for 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, underscoring its robust sensitivity and reproducibility. Moreover, its utility extends to the quantification of diquat dibromide (DQ) in standard solutions and green tea leaves, showcasing LODs of 6.61 × 10 −9 mol/L and 6.76 × 10 −8 mol/L, respectively, thereby exhibiting promising capabilities for ultra-sensitive pesticide detection in food. The exceptional SERS property can be ascribed to the enriching properties of the porous ZIF-8 nanostructures. Significantly, when exposed to UV light, the CNC/ZIF-8/Ag nanostructures efficiently degrade DQ within 60 min. Furthermore, their practical reusability under UV light is proved by high SERS performance across five detection cycles. These results emphasize the immense potential of CNC/ZIF-8/Ag in SERS-based trace pesticide detection.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) technology has received increasing attention in the bioimaging field. Herein, based on the support of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) with thiol groups, one-dimensional (1D) "hot spot" structure was constructed by the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) via Au-S bonding. Silica shell was subsequently coated on the CNC loaded with AuNPs to fabricate core-shell SERS nanoprobe, which was further successfully applied for the SERS imaging of Hela cells. Owing to the presence of silica shell, the nanoprobe exhibited excellent water-dispersible stability in phosphate buffer salt solution (PBS). Moreover, the silica shell effectively protected both the "hot spot" structure and the adsorbed Raman reporter of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid from external interference, thereby improving the signal stability of SERS nanoprobe. In addition, the plasma coupling of electromagnetic field between AuNPs and silica significantly enhanced the Raman signal of "hot spots". The SERS nanoprobe possessed good biocompatibility even at relatively high concentrations, and successfully achieved bioimaging of Hela cell using the Raman signal at 1580 cm -1 channel.

Magnetic partially carbonized cellulose nanocrystals (MPC-CNC) were obtained by sulfuric acid treatment of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and then loaded with magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The material is shown to be a viable material for magnetic solid phase extraction of triazine and triazole pesticides from water. The pesticides (specifically: simazine, ametryn, prometryn, terbutryn, atrazine, triadimenol, epoxiconazole, myclobutanil, triadimefon and tebuconazole) were quantified by ultra HPLC in tandem with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The effects of NaCl concentration, amount of adsorbent, vortex time, sample volume and pH value on extraction efficiency were optimized by Plackett-Burman design and Box-Behnken design methods. Under the optimal conditions, the method shows the following figures of merit: (a) Linear responses in the range from 0.02–10 μg L −1 ; (b) detection limits between 2.2 to 6.1 ng L −1 (for S/ N = 3); (c) recoveries from spiked samples of 73.7–117.1% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.0–15.7%; and (d) an enrichment factor of 75. The method was successfully applied to the determination of the pesticides in five environmental water samples.
