Novel nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers (NP-CNFs) were prepared by carbonization of the CNFs@polydopamine composite. The NP-CNFs were served as the anode material for sodium-ion batteries, showing a superior reversible discharge capacity of 174 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at the current density of 50 mA g −1 . Even at a high current density of 2 A g −1 , a high reversible discharge capacity of 103 mAh g −1 can also be attained. Besides, even in the case of 500 mA g −1 , this work also observes the prominent cycling stability in the long term (>1200 cycles). These results suggest that the NP-CNFs electrode shows prominent electrochemical performance . Such prominent electrochemical performance of NP-CNFs electrode may be attributed to the synergetic effect between the nitrogen-doping and the porous structure . The capacity can be greatly increased by the nitrogen-doping, and the porous structured NP-CNFs can be sufficiently contacted with the electrolyte and promote the sodium ion/electrons transportation.

It is an enormous challenge to develop low-cost non-noble metal bi-functional catalysts toward overall water splitting. The efficient water decomposition electrocatalysts need both intrinsic activities determined by electronic structure and superb mass transfer ability. For this, in the contribution, an efficient self-supported bi-functional catalyst, i.e. , nanoscale hetero Mo 2 C-CoO encapsulated in N -doped carbon nanofibers (Mo 2 C-CoO@ N -CNFs), is designed and fabricated with facile electrospinning avenue. Density functional theory and electrochemical investigation manifest that the synergistic effect of bimetallic Mo/Co accelerates kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and lowers the energy barrier of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Thanks to the structural and compositional merits, the optimized integrated Mo 2 C-CoO@ N -CNFs film demonstrates remarkable catalytic activities in both OER and HER, and renders a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.56 V when used for alkaline whole water cracking. The design concept here provides insights for future rational construction of advanced water decomposition catalysts.

To develop multi-functional microwave-absorbing materials, the FeCoNi/MoS 2 @carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) aerogels were synthesized by anchoring FeCoNi and MoS 2 onto an aerogel skeleton via directional freeze-drying and catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD). Through CCVD, a diverse array of heterointerfaces was successfully constructed and defect-containing CNTs were introduced, thereby improving the impedance mismatch of carbon-based aerogels while achieving outstanding microwave absorption performance. The composite aerogel results in a minimum reflection loss of −84.18 dB at the thickness of 1.85 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.40 GHz at the thickness of 1.75 mm with a 13 % filler ratio. The excellent electromagnetic wave absorbing ability is mainly ascribed to the formation of three-dimensional conduction network, abundant heterogeneous interfaces, and the introduction of magnetic loss. Density functional theory calculations further elucidate that the enhanced dielectric properties arise from asymmetric charge distribution at heterogeneous interfaces (FeCoNi–C and MoS 2 –C), which amplifies interfacial polarization, while the increased density of states optimizes conduction loss. Additionally, the composite aerogels exhibit exceptional thermal insulation and infrared stealth performance. This work pioneers a novel pathway method for multifunctional aerogels using CCVD.

An efficient and low-cost approach to preparing CNFs with succinic acid hydrolysis and NaClO 2 oxidation is explored. High-temperature-short-time hydrolysis can depolymerize the cellulose, whereas the dispersibility of the CNFs is hugely enhanced by NaClO 2 oxidation under alkaline condition. The degradation of cellulose in succinic acid hydrolysis follows first-order reaction kinetics and is severely influenced by the hydrolysis temperature, moreover, the molecular chains of the cellulose are seriously cracked under the optimized condition. The NaClO 2 oxidation greatly improves the zeta potential (−36.2 mV) and the dispersibility of the CNFs. The obtained CNFs have an ultimate yield of 94.6%, and the diameter distribution is mainly within 20–40 nm. In addition, some amount of carboxyl groups in the cellulose will be instead of the hydroxyl groups , and the crystallinity of the CNFs is significantly increased.

The target of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the micro-dissolution process of cellulose in alkaline aqueous solutions and to develop a novel method for extracting cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). Herein, the dissolution process of cellulose in alkaline aqueous solutions will be controlled by varying the temperature, and the undissolved cellulose will be analyzed to reveal the microscopic dissolution process of cellulose, and a novel process for extracting cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) will be developed based on the findings. The crystalline structure of cellulose was gradually disrupted as the dissolution progressed, and the crystal form of cellulose changed gradually from cellulose I to cellulose II during the dissolution process, while all undissolved cellulose crystals remained as cellulose I. Cellulose, after its structure is disrupted during the dissolution process, will inevitably decompose into CNFs, and the microscopic dissolution process of cellulose follows a “top-down” dissolution sequence. The CNFs extraction method developed in this study can extract CNFs with high yield (>60 %) in a stable manner, as well as narrow particle size distribution , high crystallinity (>77 %), and good thermal stability . This study enhances the comprehension of the dissolution process of cellulose and paves a possible way for industrialization of CNFs production.

Marcasite (m-FeS2) exhibits higher electronic conductivity than that of pyrite (p-FeS2) because of its lower semiconducting gap (0.4 vs 0.7 eV). Meanwhile, as demonstrates stronger Fe–S bonds and less S–S interactions, the m-FeS2 seems to be a better choice for electrode materials compared to p-FeS2. However, the m-FeS2 has been seldom studied due to its sophisticated synthetic methods until now. Herein, a hierarchical m-FeS2 and carbon nanofibers composite (m-FeS2/CNFs) with grape-cluster structure was designed and successfully prepared by a straightforward hydrothermal method. When evaluated as an electrode material for lithium ion batteries, the m-FeS2/CNFs exhibited superior lithium storage properties with a high reversible capacity of 1399.5 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g–1 and good rate capability of 782.2 mAh g–1 up to 10 A g–1. The Li-storage mechanism for the lithiation/delithiation processes of m-FeS2/CNFs was systematically investigated by ex situ powder X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy. Interestingly, the hierarchical m-FeS2 microspheres assembled by small FeS2 nanoparticles in the m-FeS2/CNFs composite converted into a mimosa with leaves open shape during Li+ insertion process and vice versa. Accordingly, a “CNFs accelerated decrystallization–recrystallization” mechanism was proposed to explain such morphology variations and the decent electrochemical performance of m-FeS2/CNFs.

A self-supporting electrode (FeCo-MOF/CNFs) combining iron cobalt bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (FeCo-MOFs) with carbon nanofibers (CNFs) was applied as the anode of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The introduction of FeCo-MOFs enhanced graphitization degree and electrical conductivity, which endowed FeCo-MOF/CNFs with excellent electrocatalytic performance and good biocompatibility. The hierarchical porous structure of FeCo-MOF/CNFs provided abundant attachment sites for electroactive bacteria (EAB) and facilitated rapid electron transfer. The MFC equipped with FeCo-MOF/CNFs anode (FeCo/CNFs-MFC) exhibited considerable power generation output (maximum power density: 5.3 ± 0.2 W/m 2 , coulombic efficiency: 54 ± 4 %). In addition, FeCo/CNFs-MFC achieved a direct electron transfer (DET) catalytic current density of 0.63 A/m 2 . FeCo-MOF/CNFs could simultaneously enhance the bioelectrocatalysis activity and promote the DET process of EAB, which provided an effective way to improve the sluggish extracellular electron transport process of the MFC anode.

In the domain of energetic materials (EMs), the high-energy and high-strength propellants are always what are the scientists pursuing to satisfy the great demands of fast development and replacement for artillery. Recently, the emerging of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) has attracted great interests since its extraordinary performances like biocompatibility, carbon-neutral nature, tailorable surface chemistry, and unprecedented mechanical properties. Inspired by the fascinating high strengthen of CNFs, this study prepared a kind of energetic hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX)@CNFs composites firstly, and then applied them in conventional double-based gun propellant (GP) to study its energy, combustion and mechanical, and sensitivity performances. The results of the mechanical properties demonstrated that the impact strength of RDX@CNFs-GP with different content of CNFs was improved by 34.9-104.7%, 7.1-39.4%, 14.4-51.2% under the condition of low, room and high temperature, the compression strength was improved by 8.6-49.5%, 4.3-45.9%, 6.2-47.8%, while the tensile strength was improved by 0.6-21.2%, 7.0-19.5%, 9.0-26.0%, respectively. Moreover, the impact and electrostatic spark sensitivities have also been increased by 21.8% and 61.8% in terms of the maximum value and exert favorable desensitization effect compared with blank sample. Notably, the propellant added with CNFs could burn steadily without anomalous combustion behavior, and the energy level of the [email protected] %-GP (1180.70 J/g) maintain relative close value to that of RDX@CNFs-0%-GP (1184.84 J/g) with regard to the gunpowder impetus. Lastly, the enhancement mechanism of the CNFs in GP was discussed and proposal. Hence, this present work could potentially provide fundamental theory and data support for the development of CNFs in high-strength and high energy propellants.

Improving the conductivity and active surface area of electrospun carbon nanofibers is beneficial to develop binder-free supercapacitor electrodes for practical application prospects in energy storage field. Herein, we propose a facile and low-cost synthesis of hybrid electrospun carbon nanofibers composites (Ni-G-CNFs) coated with polyaniline throns (Ni-G-CNFs@PANI) via a combination of electrospinning and followed by carbonization and in situ polymerization processes. The prepared Ni-G-CNFs@PANI as a novel binder-free electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 318.0 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 and an acceptable capacitance retention of 62.1% when the current density increased from 0.5 A g −1 to 10 A g −1 in three-electrode system. Furthermore, a symmetric all solid-state supercapacitor was assembled by two binder-free electrodes, and the maximum energy density of 14.4 Wh kg −1 and maximum power density of 3750.2 W kg −1 were achieved in a potential window of 1.5 V. Capacitance retention remained 85.8% after 1000 cycles of charge-discharge process even at a high current density of 10 A g −1 . This strategy for growing PANI on electrospun hybrid CNFs paves a new avenue for construction of high-performance binder-free energy storage devices.

Complicated contaminants in wastewater, such as intractable oils, organic colors, and adhering organisms, have generated major environmental problems that are hazardous to ecosystems and human health, and wastewater purification is complex and difficult to achieve with a single substance or single process. A facile yet environmentally friendly technique for fabricating a superhydrophobic, oil-water separation, anti-bioadhesion, and photocatalytic Pulp/cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) membrane for all-in-one wastewater treatment is presented here. In this strategy, the hierarchical micro/nanostructured CeO 2 nanoparticles and stearic acid (STA)-coated Pulp/CNF (Pulp/CNF-CeO 2 -STA) membrane is fabricated via a straightforward and easy-to-operate coating method, which simultaneously endows the membrane with superwetting ability, good oil-water separation capacity, notable photocatalytic degradation capacity, and outstanding anti-bioadhesion action. According to the experimental results, the suitably prepared Pulp/CNF-CeO 2 -STA membrane displayed superior superhydrophobicity (water contact angle: 166 ± 2°), high separation efficiency (88%), and high throughput (73 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). This Pulp/CNF-CeO 2 -STA membrane also showed significant photocatalytic degradation (>94%) of organic dye pollutants in water, as well as good anti-bioadhesive performance against Chlorella . As such, it serves several functions in wastewater treatment, considerably simplifying installation and saving money in application. In conclusion, this unique coating process is environmentally benign and very practicable, paving the door for the development of multi-functional materials in environmental treatments.

In this work, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanospheres (CNSs) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were prepared and compared, and then the effect of nanocellulose with different morphologies and concentrations (0.2–0.6%, w/v) on the interfacial properties and emulsifying properties of gelatin (G, 2.0%, w/v)/nanocellulose complexes (G-CNCs, G-CNSs, G-CNFs) was investigated systemically. The results showed that the addition of nanocellulose increased the surface hydrophobicity (H 0 , 7.45–9.93) and apparent viscosity (17.75–60.94 Pa s) of complexes due to the generation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions and bridging structures. Among them, the promoting effects of CNCs and CNSs were the strongest and weakest, respectively, and the effects of CNFs were intermediate. The improved H 0 was beneficial to promote the adsorption of G-CNSs at the oil-water interface, corresponding to increased interfacial viscoelasticity and decreased droplet size (55.14–49.12 μm). However, the interfacial adsorption of the G-CNCs and G-CNFs was inhibited due to the energy barrier generated by molecular entanglement despite its high hydrophobicity, which made more complexes participate in the formation of the network structure in the continuous phase (CLSM), thus improving the water holding capacity (56.14–9.65%) and rheological properties of the emulsion, especially in the G-CNCs. Furthermore, the increased nanocellulose concentration further improved the interfacial stability and emulsion stability. Therefore, this study could provide significant guidance for regulating the properties of low-oil emulsions stabilized by gelatin/nanocellulose complexes.
