Boosting Sodium-Ion Storage by Encapsulating NiS (CoS) Hollow Nanoparticles into Carbonaceous Fibers

Yuhui Zhang,Chunxiao Lv,Xin Wang,Shuai Chen,Daohao Li,Zhi Peng,Dongjiang Yang

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) with high theoretical specific capacity and superior electrochemical performance are promising anode material candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the structural pulverization because of the severe volume change in the discharge/charge process leads to a severe capacity decay, limited rate performance, and poor cycling stability, which inhibits their practical application. Herein, we report a novel strategy for the synthesis of TMS hollow nanoparticles@carbon fibers (TMS-HNP@CFs-T) by using seaweed-derived alginate as the template and precursor. When evaluated as anode materials for SIBs, the hybrids display excellent sodium storage performance. For instance, CoS-HNP@CFs-900 exhibits high reversible specific capacity, significant cycling stability (392.2 mA h g–1 at 1000 mA g–1 over 100 cycles), and rate performance (334.2 mA h g–1 can be achieved at 5000 mA g–1). The hollow TMP NPs and conductive carbon fibers could synergistically reduce the expansion of volume and shorten the ion transport path to boost the sodium storage performance.

Enhancing Electrocatalytic NO Reduction to NH3 by the CoS Nanosheet with Sulfur Vacancies

Longcheng Zhang,Qiang Zhou,Jie Liang,Luchao Yue,Tingshuai Li,Yongsong Luo,Qian Liu,Na Li,Bo Tang,Feng Gong,Xiaodong Guo,Xuping Sun

Electrochemical reduction of NO to NH3 is of great significance for mitigating the accumulation of nitrogen oxides and producing valuable NH3. Here, we demonstrate that the CoS nanosheet with sulfur vacancies (CoS1–x) behaves as an efficient catalyst toward electrochemical NO-to-NH3 conversion. In 0.2 M Na2SO4 electrolyte, such CoS1–x displays a large NH3 yield rate (44.67 μmol cm–2 h–1) and a high Faradaic efficiency (53.62%) at −0.4 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, outperforming the CoS counterpart (27.02 μmol cm–2 h–1; 36.68%). Moreover, the Zn–NO battery with CoS1–x shows excellent performance with a power density of 2.06 mW cm–2 and a large NH3 yield rate of 1492.41 μg h–1 mgcat.–1. Density functional theory was performed to obtain mechanistic insights into the NO reduction over CoS1–x.

Remarkable chlorine-resistance and catalytic activity of MgAl layered double oxides for COS hydrolysis

Shining Wang,Yuran Li,Yuting Lin,Jianshan Wang,Yanbin Cui,Tingyu Zhu

Hydrolytic catalysts for carbonyl sulfide (COS) in blast furnace gas (BFG) are confronted with severe challenges arising from sulfate deposition and HCl poisoning. Layered double oxides (LDO) are characterized by their abundant basicity and well-dispersed metal ions, with the potential to be applied in acidic atmospheres. We synthesized a series of MgAl-LDO catalysts by the co-precipitation method. The COS hydrolysis activity exhibits a volcano-type depending on Mg:Al ratio, with 2MgAl-LDO showing the optimal performance. 2MgAl-LDO maintains 100% COS conversion for up to 18 h under HCl-free conditions, moreover its COS hydrolysis capacity reaches 0.52 g/g in the presence of HCl. Comprehensive characterization (BET, XRD, XPS, TG-MS, CO 2 -TPD, in-situ DRIFTS, SSNMR and DFT) reveals the superior activity of 2MgAl-LDO. A larger pore size (23.9 nm) facilitates gaseous product diffusion, while an abundance of weak alkaline center (-OH) promotes hydrolysis activity. The highly active sites are further identified as tetrahedrally coordinated Al-derived Al T -O-Mg site, which favor the dissociation of H 2 O to generate terminal hydroxyl groups (HO-μ 1 ) acting as the active centers for COS hydrolysis. The atmosphere switching experiment demonstrates HCl exerts a dual effect on COS hydrolysis, characterized by short-term promotion and long-term inhibition. By increasing the surface H + concentration on the catalyst, HCl facilitates the transformation of the HSCO 2 − intermediate and suppresses the deposition of SO 3 2− /SO 4 2− species. However, HCl simultaneously damages the metal sites and -OH groups, ultimately leading to catalyst deactivation. This work provides valuable guidance for the rational design of sulfate-tolerant and HCl-resistant catalysts for BFG purification applications.

Synergistic Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Peroxymonosulfate Activation over CoS/CoTiO3 Nanocomposites for Levofloxacin Degradation

Zhong Yu,Xu Huan-Yan,Li Bo,Wang Bao-Ying,Liu Dan-Qi,Zhang Yu-hang,Zhao Lin

The global energy crisis and escalating water pollution necessitate the development of sustainable technologies that integrate environmental remediation with clean energy production. Therefore, if key technologies for hydrogen production from organic pollutant waste liquids can be developed, it will have significant value for both energy production and environmental governance. In this work, CoS/CoTiO 3 composite catalysts were prepared, and the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction was coupled with advanced persulfate oxidation technology. The degradation performance of levofloxacin (LEV) catalyst in a coupled system was systematically evaluated, and its electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity was investigated. The experimental results showed that under the conditions of an initial LEV concentration of 20 mg·L –1 , catalyst dosage of 0.5 g·L –1 , and PMS dosage of 0.8 mmol·L –1 , the degradation rate of LEV by CoS/CoTiO 3 coupling system could reach over 97%, significantly better than that of a single CoTiO 3 coupling system (50%). In terms of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, the overpotential of CoS/CoTiO 3 composite catalyst decreased by about 300 mV compared to CoTiO 3 , with a Tafel slope of 251.7 mV·dec –1 , while the Tafel slope of CoTiO 3 was 329.2 mV·dec –1 , indicating a significant enhancement in the hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics of the composite material. The CoS/CoTiO 3 composite catalyst constructed in this study achieves efficient degradation of organic pollutants and synergistic coupling of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, providing a technological approach for waste liquid resource utilization and clean energy production. It has important application potential in the fields of environmental pollution control and hydrogen energy development.

Interfacial CoS bond-enhanced Mn0.3Cd0.7S/CoPB Schottky junction for photothermal-assisted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ruiqi Zhang,Qinghua Liu,Tao Wang,Peibao Xiao,Xue-Yang Ji,Junchang Liu,Peiqing Cai,Dafeng Zhang,Xipeng Pu,Huayang Zhang,Xinghui Liu

Herein, a Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S/CoPB (MCS/CPB) composite with an interfacial Co S bond is successfully fabricated via an ultrasonic-assisted grinding method, forming a Schottky junction. The optimized MCS/CPB-5 achieves a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 96.8 ± 0.4 mmol g −1  h −1 under visible light, which is 4.12 times greater than that of pristine MCS. The integration of CoPB enhances near-infrared light absorption and photothermal conversion, thereby promoting efficient charge carrier separation and utilization. The formation of the Schottky junction suppresses charge recombination by facilitating directional electron transfer across the interface. Characterizations including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations confirm the presence of Co S bonding and elucidated the charge transfer pathway. This study presents a promising strategy for designing non-noble metal-based photocatalysts with improved hydrogen evolution performance through synergistic photothermal and interfacial engineering.

Rational Design of the CoS/Co9S8@NC Composite Enabling High-Rate Sodium-Ion Storage

Ying Qi,Tao Zhang,Ningxiang Wu,Huarui Ding,Gongxun Yu,Jiabiao Lian,Li Xu,Jingxia Qiu,Sheng Li

Metal sulfides have been considered promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high specific capacities. However, the poor electrical conductivity and sluggish electrochemical kinetics of metal sulfides are the critical factors that are limiting their applications. In this work, cobalt sulfides with heterostructures embedded in an N-doped carbon composite (CoS/Co9S8@NC) have been synthesized to further investigate Na+ diffusion in the SIBs. With contributions from the heterostructure, the N-doped carbon, and the unique morphology, the composite can deliver enhanced rate capability and cycling stability compared to Co9S8. This work depicts the change of Na+ diffusion under the influence of heterostructures, providing an effective strategy of material design for enhancing the electrochemical performance of sodium-ion storage.

Regulation of multilayer long crystalline MoS2 by NiO-modified Al2O3 for improved hydrodesulfurization of COS

Yubiao Li,Yu Liu,Xueqian Wang,Yixing Ma,Ping Ning,Langlang Wang,Xiang Li,Rui Cao

Activated alumina-based composite oxide support is a commonly used support in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts, which not only retains the performance advantages of each component in the composite oxide support, but also significantly improves the defects of a single activated alumina support, such as the strong metal-support force of interaction. In this study, NiO-Al 2 O 3 composite support was prepared by introducing NiO-modified Al 2 O 3 , and MoS 2 /NiO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared for the hydrodesulfurization of COS by liquid phase reduction method. In the COS hydrogenation reaction, the MoS 2 /NiO-Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieved complete conversion of COS at 220 °C and showed more than 99.9% H 2 S selectivity. In stability tests, the catalyst maintained a COS conversion of over 99% throughout the 23-h hydrogenation reaction. Various characterization results show that the NiO-Al 2 O 3 composite support prepared by introducing NiO-modified Al 2 O 3 weakens the metal-support interaction force between MoS 2 and NiO-Al 2 O 3 composite support, which is conducive to the synthesis of MoS 2 with multilayer and long wafer structures. And it can significantly increase the formation rate of MoS 2 to 87.9%, which greatly improves the active site content of the catalyst. Furthermore, the dual modulation of MoS 2 and Al 2 O 3 by NiO modulated the surface alkalinity of the catalysts and promoted the formation of a large number of active edge sites in the MoS 2 /NiO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts, which in turn significantly improved the HDS performance of the catalysts. In addition, EPR characterization combined with experiments showed that the sulfur vacancies are the active sites for catalytic COS hydrodesulfurization over MoS 2 -based catalysts.

CoS Nanoparticles Decorated Biomass-Derived Carbon Spheres: A Highly Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activator for Tetracycline Degradation

Lin Zhao,Huan-Yan Xu,Bo Li,Yu Zhong,Yu-Hang Zhang,Dan-Qi Liu

The development of efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is critical for antibiotic wastewater remediation. Herein, a cobalt sulfide-modified biomass carbon composite (CoS/BC) was synthesized via a hydrothermal method using waste pine trunks as a sustainable carbon source. The optimized 30% CoS/BC catalyst demonstrated exceptional PMS activation performance, achieving 93% tetracycline (TC) degradation within 30 min. Systematic experiments revealed that the degradation efficiency was influenced by catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, pH, and coexisting anions, with the system maintaining high activity over a broad pH range (3–11) and in complex water matrices. Mechanistic studies through radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed that sulfate radicals (SO4·–), singlet oxygen (1O2), and superoxide radicals (O2·–) jointly contributed to TC degradation, with SO4·– playing the dominant role. The carbon support facilitated electron transfer and enhanced the Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycle, thereby promoting continuous generation of reactive species. This work not only provides a value-added strategy for converting waste biomass into high-performance catalysts but also advances the fundamental understanding of radical and nonradical pathways in PMS-based oxidation processes. The proposed catalyst demonstrates great potential for practical applications in antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Interface-engineered MOF-derived CoS/C nanofibers for efficient microwave absorption and radar-scattering suppression

Danqiang Huang,Xiangyun Zhang,Xianfei Xie,Yile Dai,Qing Wang,Jianfeng Dai,Zizhou Yuan

CoS/C nanofibers were constructed via MOF-template-assisted interfacial engineering. • Rich CoS/C interfaces and defect sites enable strong broadband microwave attenuation. • Gradient periodic structures further regulate multiband absorption and RCS reduction. Developing fibrous microwave absorbers with balanced electromagnetic attenuation, broad effective absorption bandwidth, and radar-scattering suppression capability is important for electromagnetic protection and stealth-related applications. Herein, CoS/C composite nanofibers were fabricated through electrospinning, surface-confined Co-MOF growth, carbonization, and subsequent sulfidation. The obtained one-dimensional composites consist of a PAN-derived conductive carbon framework decorated with CoS nanoparticles, producing CoS/C heterointerfaces and N/O/S-associated defect sites. By regulating the cobalt precursor content, the dielectric response and impedance matching of the composites were effectively tuned. The optimized CSN-6 sample achieves a minimum reflection loss of −61.33 dB at a thickness of 2.27 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of 6.32 GHz at 2.31 mm, indicating a favorable balance between dielectric attenuation and impedance matching. Electromagnetic-parameter analysis suggests that the enhanced absorption mainly originates from conduction loss in the interconnected carbon-fiber network, CoS/C interfacial polarization, heteroatom/defect-induced dipolar relaxation, and possible multiple reflection/scattering within the fibrous architecture. CST simulations based on the measured electromagnetic parameters further show that the CSN-6-based absorber achieves a maximum simulated radar cross-section reduction of 17.53 dB relative to a perfect electric conductor at 14.56 GHz. Moreover, a simulation-guided gradient periodic unit cell was proposed as a proof-of-concept structural design, generating multiple absorption responses at 2.57, 7.56, and 13.47 GHz. This work provides an interface-regulation and structure-simulation strategy for developing dielectric-loss-dominated CoS/C fibrous microwave absorbers. Coordination and K-induced electronic effects promote efficient COS hydrolysis over K-Nd/Al2O3 catalysts

Yuran Li,Yu Zhang,Yuting Lin,Guangyan Xu,Ruixiang Xu,Wei Su,Tingyu Zhu

A K-Nd/Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieves a COS capacity of 1.46 g/g under H 2 S/O 2 co-feeding. • K modulates Nd Lewis acidity and facilitates the dissociative activation of H 2 O. • Synergistic K and Nd sites enable the formation of key *HOCOS and *HSCOO intermediates. • Adaptive Nd-O x sites, enhanced by K-induced effects, promote H 2 S desorption. The development of efficient alumina-based catalysts for carbonyl sulfide (COS) hydrolysis remains a significant challenge, as their application in real blast furnace gas is largely hindered by insufficient activity and poor long-term durability. Here, K-Nd/Al 2 O 3 maintains nearly complete COS conversion for 20 h at 120 °C and achieves a cumulative COS conversion capacity of 1.46 g/g under a simplified H 2 S/O 2 -containing atmosphere. Comprehensive characterization reveals that K-Nd co-modulation tailors acid-base site distribution, preserving active sites. Aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM and XAFS analyses confirm that Nd is predominantly atomically dispersed, existing as isolated, low-coordinated Nd-O x single-sites. During reaction, the Nd-O coordination number increases from 4.2 to 8.0 without aggregation, demonstrating reaction-induced reconstruction of the first coordination shell. Surface characterization, in-situ DRIFTS, and DFT calculations further show that K enhances surface electron density and fine-tunes Nd Lewis acidity, promoting H 2 O dissociation and nucleophilic *OH attack on COS, stabilizing *HOCOS and *HSCOO intermediates while facilitating H 2 S desorption. The synergy between Nd-O x centers and K-induced electronic regulation reconcile durable COS hydrolysis under harsh conditions. Synergistic mechanism of green corrosion inhibitors COS and CMC-Na in Co electrochemical mechanical polishing

Chunlin Cai,Min Zhong,Meirong Yi,Xiaobing Li,Jianfeng Chen,Wenhu Xu

Electrochemical mechanical polishing (ECMP), through the introduction of electric field, promotes the chemical reaction during polishing. However, the addition of electric field will accelerate the oxidative corrosion, at this time the effective corrosion inhibitor must be added in the polishing solution. Nevertheless, most traditional corrosion inhibitors are toxic and inhibition efficiency is low. In order to meet this technical challenge, this paper investigates the effect of two green corrosion inhibitors, chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) and carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC-Na), on Co ECMP, and compares them with the traditional inhibitor TAZ. The results show that when COS and CMC-Na are added at the same time, the polished Co surface quality can be greatly improved, and the surface roughness decreases by 94.6 %. It indicates that adding COS and CMC-Na simultaneously can play the best corrosion inhibition effect and achieve the best surface quality. The synergistic behavior and action mechanism of COS/CMC-Na are analyzed by polishing experiments, static corrosion, electrochemical tests, XPS, and AFM. This study provides a reference for the development of green polishing solutions for Co ECMP.

Three-dimensional porous C/CoS nanocomposites for a long-life and high-rate potassium storage

Meiqi Mu,Haishan He,Yunfei Gan,Jing Yu,Jirong Mou,Jujun Yuan,Fangkun Li,Xingquan Wang,Xiaokang Li,Xianke Zhang,Jun Liu

The three-dimensional (3D) porous C/CoS nanocomposites were successfully synthesized using a spontaneous template method followed by a subsequent vulcanization process. As potassium ion battery anode, the 3D porous C/CoS nanocomposites exhibited a reversible capacity of 165 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 after 2000 cycles and superior rate performance. The excellent electrochemical performance of 3D porous C/CoS nanocomposites is ascribed to its distinctive architecture, which can alleviate the volume variation of CoS in the cyclic processes, improve electronic/ionic conductivity, and provide more chances of contact between electrode material and electrolyte. It is promising that our fabricating method can be expanded for synthesizing other 3D porous C/metal sulfides composites as high-performance PIB anodes.
