In this work, cobalt phosphide nanoparticles (Co 2 P NPs) were prepared by simple and mild hydrothermal method without the use of harmful phosphorous source. The morphological structure and surface component of Co 2 P were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Considering the excellent electrocatalytic reduction activity and good electrical conductivity of transition-metal phosphide, we fabricated Co 2 P NPs on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate (Co 2 P/ITO) for H 2 O 2 detection. The Co 2 P/ITO transducer displayed a rapid amperometric response less than 5 s, a broader response range from 0.001 to 10.0 mM and a low detection limit of 0.65 μM. In addition, the non-enzymatic Co 2 P/ITO sensor showed outstanding selectivity, reproducibility, repeatability and stability, all of which qualified the Co 2 P/ITO electrode for quite a reliable and promising biosensor for H 2 O 2 sensing.

● Highly dispersed Co 2 P anchored onto PEI-stabilized N-rGO layers. ● Gas production rate of 517 mL g −1 h −1 with 100% H 2 selectivity. ● Uniform heterointerface with highly accessible interfacial sites. ● Energy barrier reduction by optimized electronic modulation of interfacial Co δ+ . Heterointerface engineering is an effective strategy for constructing strong metal–support interactions and regulating the electronic structure of metal active centers. In this study, the two-dimensional (2D) architecture of N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) was employed to construct a uniform and highly accessible heterointerface with Co 2 P nanoparticles, thereby optimizing the electronic structure of Co 2 P for efficient hydrogen production from liquid-phase formic acid (FA). Specifically, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was introduced to stabilize the layered structure of rGO during calcination by intercalating between GO sheets, along with interacting with functional groups on GO via electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Meanwhile, PEI served as a nitrogen source to promote N doping of rGO and increase effective anchoring sites, such as pyridinic N. The resulting Co 2 P@N-rGO (PEI&phen) catalyst simultaneously achieved high Co 2 P dispersion, exposed interfacial sites, and efficient electron transfer, thereby exhibiting excellent FA dehydrogenation activity with a gas generation rate of 517 mL g −1 h −1 and H 2 selectivity of 100%. This activity was significantly higher than that of the PEI-free counterpart, in which the N-rGO structure was severely damaged, and also exceeded the activities reported for some noble-metal catalysts (e.g., Pd/C, Pt/C) and single-atom cobalt catalysts. XPS characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the abundant Co–N interfacial sites in Co 2 P@N-rGO (PEI&phen) induced interfacial charge redistribution and optimized the electronic structure of Co 2 P species. In situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations confirmed that FA dehydrogenation over this catalyst proceeded through a formate (HCOO*) pathway, while the construction of the Co 2 P/N-rGO heterointerface significantly lowered the energy barrier of the key reaction step, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity. Bifunctional seawater electrolysis is limited by the activity–durability trade-off in chloride-containing media. Here, in-situ-grown Co-BTC MOF arrays on nickel foam were converted into self-supporting CoP/Co 2 P-C/NF electrodes, enabling controlled evolution Co 2 P-rich to CoP-rich compositions and identifying a favourable CoP/Co 2 P coexistence range. The continuous conductive carbon framework shortens charge-transport paths, maintains electrolyte–electrode contact, and supports rapid interfacial kinetics. Theoretical calculations indicate that the CoP/Co 2 P biphasic interface modulates intermediate adsorption, weakening Cl adsorption while favouring water-splitting-related intermediates, consistent with suppressed chlorine-related competition. At 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, the optimized electrode requires 31 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 180 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and drives overall water splitting at 1.47 V with stable operation over 100 h at 1.56 V. In 1.0 M KOH + seawater, it maintains low voltage and outperforms Pt/C||RuO 2 , providing a reproducible phase-ratio regulation strategy for non-precious bifunctional seawater electrolysis electrodes.

Nanostructures with metallic crystalline cores and amorphous shells are recognized as promising catalysts for oxygen reduction (ORR) to enhance intrinsic activity and electroconductivity through strong interfacial interactions. Herein, a novel strategy involving crystallinity and nanostructure engineering is developed for constructing the amorphous ferric phosphate shell and the embedded crystalline Co2P core on three-dimensional interconnected carbon skeleton microspheres (Co2P@am-FePO4). Due to the excellent intrinsic activity and the enhanced electroconductivity from the strong electronic interactions between the amorphous ferric phosphate shell and crystalline Co2P core, the Co2P@am-FePO4 catalysts exhibit an excellent oxygen reduction electrocatalytic activity with a half wave potential as low as 0.91 V. More importantly, such excellent ORR performance can also translate to a high Zn–air performance as evidenced by a high specific energy density of 923 Wh/kgZn and maximum discharge power density of 152 mW/cm2.

The development of electrocatalysts exhibiting high activity, long-term stability, and tolerance to a wide range of electrolytes remains a key challenge for practical water electrolysis. Three-dimensional Co/Co 2 P heterostructures regulated by halogen-doped carbon dots (X-CDs) were constructed on self-supported nickel foam via a two-step hydrothermal and phosphorization process. The incorporation of different halogen-doped carbon dots influences the growth behavior of the catalyst and yields unique hierarchical morphologies. Fluorine-doped carbon dots (F-CDs) promote the formation of well-defined nanoflower structures that provide abundant exposed active sites. The Co/Co 2 P heterojunction enhances catalytic kinetics and facilitates efficient charge transfer. The improved F-CDs-derived catalyst exhibits remarkable durability and bifunctional catalytic performance in alkaline media, requiring overpotentials of only 185 mV for HER and 354 mV for OER at 100 mA cm −2 . It maintains exceptional performance at elevated current densities, exceeding that of commercial noble-metal-based catalysts. The catalyst demonstrates stable OER performance at 100 mA cm⁻ 2 over a duration of 300 h. When assembled in a two-electrode electrolyzer, a cell voltage of only 1.91 V is needed to drive overall water splitting at 100 mA cm⁻ 2 in simulated alkaline seawater. The electrolyzer operates stably for 100 h and displays tolerance to chloride-containing environments. This work demonstrates a general strategy that integrates halogen regulation with heterostructure engineering and three-dimensional self-supported architectures, offering insights into the fabrication of durable water-splitting electrocatalysts.

Developing highly efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is important for Zn–air batteries (ZABs) but still a challenge. In this work, electronic reconfiguration and structural optimization are simultaneously conducted to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalytic activity of Co2P nanoparticles, which were doped with Cu and confined within 2D ultrathin N,P-codoped carbon (NPC) nanosheets. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Cu doping can lead to more positive sites at the neighbouring Co site and weaken the binding force between the surface active sites and the adsorbed intermediates, while the 2D ultrathin nanosheets with Cu doped Co2P nanoparticles tightly anchored can remarkably boost the surface exposure of actives sites endowing such an architecture with efficient mass and charge transport pathways. As expected, the optimized Cu doped Co2P on 2D ultrathin N,P-codoped carbon (Cu-Co2P@2D-NPC) with 7.1% Cu doping exhibits a higher half-wave potential of 0.835 V than Pt/C (0.830 V). Meanwhile, flexible solid state ZABs assembled based on the 7.1%Cu-Co2P@2D-NPC hybrid deliver a high power density of 52.5 mW cm−2 and 32 h stability in the flat and folded states. This promising work holds significant potential to fabricate an efficient electrocatalyst for flexible solid state ZABs and further understand the relationship between the structure and activity.

Development of a low cost, high activity, and stable nonprecious metal bifunctional catalyst for electrocatalytic water cracking is a hot topic and big challenge. In this paper, we prepared a nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT)-enhanced three-dimensional self-supported electrocatalyst with CoP and Co2P coexistence by a two-step strategy of high-temperature carbonization and low-temperature phosphorylation. Furthermore, the induced three-dimensional carbon network skeleton facilitates rapid charge transfer. In addition, the active sites of the carbon foam (CF) are greatly increased by the construction of hollow structures. As a bifunctional electrocatalyst, CoP/Co2P/NCNT@CF exhibited excellent catalytic activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media, requiring low overpotentials of 133 and 289 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm–2, respectively. Additionally, the synthesized catalysts also exhibit good long-term stability, maintaining high catalytic activity after 20 h of continuous operation. We also confirmed the main driving force to improve the electron transfer between the heterostructures of Co and P by XPS spectra. The excellent electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to the close synergy between the highly active CoP/Co2P/NCNT and CF. This study provides a new strategy for the design of highly active bifunctional self-supporting electrocatalysts.

The process of electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen generation is significantly limited by sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The efficiency of H 2 electrocatalytic generation can be improved by reducing the anode potential or substituting urea oxidation reaction (UOR) for oxygen evolution process. Here, we report a robust catalyst based on Co 2 P/NiMoO 4 heterojunction arrays supported on nickel foam (NF) for water splitting and urea oxidation. In the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media, the optimized catalyst Co 2 P/NiMoO 4 /NF displayed a lower overpotential (169 mV) at a large current density (150 mA cm −2 ) compared to 20 wt% Pt/C/NF (295 mV@150 mA cm −2 ). In the OER and UOR, the potentials were as low as 1.45 and 1.34 V. These values surpass (for OER), or compare favorably to (for UOR), the most advanced commercial catalyst RuO 2 /NF (at 10 mA cm −2 ). This outstanding performance was attributed to the addition of Co 2 P, which has a significant effect on the chemical environment and electron structure of NiMoO 4 , while increasing the number of active sites and promoting charge transfer across the Co 2 P/NiMoO 4 interface. This work proposes a high-performance and cost-effective electrocatalyst for water splitting and urea oxidation.

The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts is critical to advancing overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, a self-supporting composite electrocatalyst based on CoP-Co 2 P/coal-based carbon fibers (CoP-Co 2 P/C-CFs) is successfully fabricated through phase-engineering. The formation mechanism of precursors is investigated, enabling precise modification of CoP and Co 2 P composite phases. This phase-engineering minimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption, thereby enhancing OWS performance. In addition, the specific active sites involved in the OWS reaction are examined to confirm the effectiveness of phase modulation on CoP and Co 2 P. Furthermore, C-CFs derived from coal exhibit self-supporting properties as well as good acid and alkaline resistances, making them a promising potential candidate for OWS. A two-electrode cell assembled using CoP-Co 2 P/C-CFs exhibits a low voltage of 1.60 V at 10 mA cm −2 for OWS, superior to 1.64 V obtained using Pt/C//RuO 2 . This study not only presents a reliable strategy for obtaining phase-engineered cobalt phosphide catalysts but also outlines a novel approach for coal into high-value-added CFs. Consequently, it offers a new perspective for the development of self-supporting electrocatalysts for OWS.

Evaluating water electrolysis at industrial temperatures can effectively facilitate the practical application of the catalysts for hydrogen generation. Here, amorphous/crystalline heterophase Pt-Co 2 P hollow nanotubes with ultra-low Pt content of 0.1 wt% are triumphantly constructed. Benefiting from “superaerophobic” hollow nanotube architecture, the heterophase Pt-Co 2 P catalyst displays small overpotential (52.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), low Tafel slope (68.9 mV dec -1 ) and long-term stability for hydrogen evolution reaction. Its mass activity (16.95 mA μg -1 Pt ) is nearly two times larger than Pt/C at 70 mV overpotential. Moreover, the Pt-Co 2 P||Co 2 P electrolyzer just requires 1.32 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 at industrial temperature (65 °C). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that after the introduction of Pt in Co 2 P, the d-band central of Co and hydrogen adsorption bader charge are downshifted, significantly improving the initial H* desorption. This work provides a neoteric thought to develop the electrocatalysts with peachy quality for water splitting.

Urea-assisted electrolysis is a promising strategy for energy-efficient hydrogen production by replacing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the thermodynamically favorable urea oxidation reaction (UOR). However, the sluggish UOR kinetics and the demand for efficient hydrogen evolution (HER) require highly active bifunctional catalysts. Herein, vertically aligned Mo-doped Co2P (Mo–Co2P) nanoarrays supported on nickel foam are constructed via a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived strategy. Mo incorporation induces electronic redistribution, downshifting the Co d-band center and weakening d–p orbital hybridization, thereby reducing Co–P bond covalency and optimizing the hydrogen adsorption free energy to 0.15 eV. Under anodic conditions, the surface reconstructs into active oxyhydroxide phases, while Mo promotes urea adsorption and activation. Consequently, Mo–Co2P achieves excellent bifunctional activity, requiring only −52 mV for HER and 1.359 V for UOR to reach 10 mA cm–2. The assembled urea-assisted electrolyzer delivers 10 mA cm–2 at a low cell voltage of 1.429 V, with a 13.2% lower energy consumption than conventional water electrolysis. This work highlights orbital hybridization and bond covalency engineering for developing advanced bifunctional catalysts.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) produces clean hydrogen through an electrochemical process. However, new nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts for the HER are required to reduce the consumption of energy. Herein, we report a new Co 2 P/WC nano-heterojunction that consists of Co 2 P and WC composite phases coated with a few-layer N-doped graphitic carbon shells (Co 2 P/WC@NC). The composite was prepared by a one-step annealing of the polyoxometalate Na 9 (NH 4 ) 5 [{(B-α-PW 9 O 34 )Co 3 (OH)(H 2 O) 2 (Ale)} 2 Co]⋅35 H 2 O (Co 7 P 6 W 18 ) and dicyandiamide (DCA). The preparation method consisted of the simultaneous phosphorization of Co and carbonization of W in a confined space to isolate a Co 2 P/WC nano-heterojunction phase for the first time. Co 2 P/WC@NC facilitated the generation of hydrogen in the electrolysis process, which had an overpotential of only 91 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the acid solution; an excellent HER performance (2 H + +2 e − →H 2 ) and Tafel slope (40 mV dec −1 ) as well as durability over a period of 50 h were achieved. Theoretical calculations showed that the Co 2 P, WC, and N pyridinic C dopants in the material synergistically promoted the HER activity rather than the individual constituents. Furthermore, Co 2 P/WC@NC nano-heterojunctions showed good HER performance in the whole pH range of electrolytes and considerable durability in acidic media containing transition metal ions, which may attract more attention for the exploration and optimization of nano-heterojunction catalysts for the HER. Graphical Acids and Bases don′t matter : A Co 2 P/WC nano-heterojunction consisting of cobalt phosphide and tungsten carbide composite phases coated with a few-layer N-doped graphitic carbon shells (Co 2 P/WC@NC) exhibits excellent activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction over the whole pH range. Theoretical calculations show that the Co 2 P, WC, and N pyridinic C dopants in the material synergistically promote the HER activity.
