Interfacial engineering of CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2 heterostructure for enhancing electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia

Fangwei Ma,Xiaoyang Yang,Wei Jiang,Xin Cui,Guangping Lei,Haoyu Qiu,Zeyi Liu,Jiafeng Wan,Yi-Fu Liu

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (e-NO3RR) to ammonia not only can effectively remove nitrate pollutants but also is a green strategy for ammonia synthesis. However, the conversion from NO3− to NH3 involves some undesired by-products and severe competing hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), limiting its further development. Herein, the rodlike CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2 heterostructure with rich interfaces is easily designed via hydrothermal followed by gas-phase sulfurization method for efficient electrochemical nitrate reduction to NH3. Benefiting from the interface effect, the optimal CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2-5 exhibits an excellent e-NO3RR performance with a high NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.11% and an NH3 yield rate of 0.45 mmol h−1 mgcat−1 at −0.8 V (vs RHE), which is superior to that of CoMoO4 and MoS2/CoS2. The validation experiments suggest that the heterointerface can inhibit the generation of by-products and competing HER, and greatly facilitate the hydrogenation process.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of CoMoO4 nanorods/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as asymmetric supercapacitor devices

T. Nandagopal,G. Balaji,S. Vadivel

The efficiency of a supercapacitor depends heavily on the materials used to create its electrodes. Physicochemical properties have piqued interest in using transition metal molybdates as electrode materials in supercapacitors . Monodisperse CoMoO 4 nanorods with a modest dimension (about 40–60 nm in width and 1.5–2 μm in length) were created on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method . Hybrid CoMoO 4 @rGO electrodes have shown exceptional electrochemical properties, especially when compared to pure CoMoO 4 in an alkaline electrolyte . In particular, the maximum specific capacitance of CoMoO 4 @rGO is 1425 Fg −1 at a current density of 1Ag −1 , while the greatest specific capacitance of CoMoO 4 is 751 Fg −1 at the same current density. Both the pure and hybrid electrodes show excellent rate capability and long-term cyclic stability, even at high current densities of 20 Ag −1 . Also, at a current density of 20 Ag −1 , the constructed asymmetric supercapacitor generated a maximum power density of 4.5 kWkg −1 , and at a current density of 1 Ag −1 , it generated a high energy density of 51.2 Whkg −1 . Based on their promising electrochemical performance, the hierarchical CoMoO 4 @rGO nanocomposites were discovered to provide for a promising electrode material in the creation of highly effective supercapacitors for power storage.

Enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution over coal-based carbon quantum dots modified CoMoO4/g-C3N4

Shiyong Xu,Mei Li,Yijun Wang,Zhiliang Jin

In pursuit of exploring functional applications of coal, this study ultrasound-assisted hydrogen peroxide was used to transform cheap coal into environmentally friendly and high-value coal-based carbon quantum dots (CQDs). These CQDs are then harnessed to synergistically assist the photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution , in collaboration with CoMoO 4 (CM) and g-C 3 N 4 (CN). The results indicated that the novel composite photocatalyst , CMCN-11/8%SCQDs, exhibited high hydrogen evolution activity, reaching a maximum hydrogen production rate of 4916.63 μmol g −1  h −1 at pH 9. At a wavelength of 420 nm, the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) was 1.78%. The conduction and valence band positions of CM were determined to be −1.03 eV and 1.65 eV, respectively, while those of CN were −0.83 eV and 1.72 eV, suggesting the formation of an S-type heterojunction between CM and CN. The significant role of SCQDs in enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was extensively investigated, demonstrating that the synergistic effect between SCQDs, CM, and CN could enhance the hydrogen evolution activity. SCQDs exhibited excellent electron transfer capabilities, serving as bridges for electron transport, functioning both as electron acceptors and donors, effectively impeding the rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs and enhancing their separation efficiency. This study provides crucial insights into the utilization of coal-based CQDs for photocatalytic water splitting, offering an economically viable and sustainable option for the functional application of coal and opening new avenues for the rational design of efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts.

Constructing Dense CoRu-CoMoO4 Heterointerfaces with Electron Redistribution for Synergistically Boosted Alkaline Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Huamei Tong,Shengjie Xu,Xinyu Zheng,Mengyue Qi,Jianjun Zhu,Di Li,Deli Jiang

Constructing metal alloys/metal oxides heterostructured electrocatalysts with abundant and strongly coupling interfaces is vital yet challenging for practical electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, CoRu nanoalloys uniformly anchored on CoMoO 4 nanosheet heterostructured electrocatalyst (CoRu-CoMoO 4 /NF) are synthesized via a self-templated strategy by simply annealing of Ru-etched CoMoO 4 /NF precursor in a reduction atmosphere. The dense and robustly coupled interface not only provides abundant active sites for water splitting but also strengthens the charge transfer efficiency. Furthermore, the theoretical calculations unveil that the strong electronic interaction at CoRu-CoMoO 4 interface can induce an interfacial electron redistribution and reduce the energetic barriers for the hydrogen and oxygen intermediates, thereby accelerating the  hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and  oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. The resultant catalyst only requires the overpotentials of 49 mV for HER and 209 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the constructed CoRu-CoMoO 4 ||CoRu-CoMoO 4 two-electrode cell achieves a cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming the benchmark Pt/C||IrO 2 . This work explores an avenue for the rational design of heterostructured electrocatalysts with abundant interfaces for practical water-splitting electrocatalysis.

POM-Based MOF-Derived Co3O4/CoMoO4 Nanohybrids as Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Xing-Lin Yang,Yu-Sheng Ye,Zhi-Meng Wang,Zao-Hong Zhang,Yi-Lie Zhao,Fan Yang,Zong-Yuan Zhu,Tao Wei

Polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived Co3O4/CoMoO4 nanohybrids were successfully fabricated by a facile solvothermal method combined with a calcination process, in which a Co-based MOF, that is, ZIF-67 acts as a template while a Keggin-type POM (H3PMo12O40) serves as a compositional modulator. The materials were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, and electrochemical measurements. When the Co3O4/CoMoO4 nanohybrids were applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), they display large lithium storage capacity (around 900 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1) and high cycling stability, and they can also exhibit good rate performances. This work might shed some light on the POM-based MOF host–guest synthesis strategy for the preparation of polymetallic oxides for enhanced electrochemical energy storage and further applications.

Yue Zhao,Wei-Bin Zhang,Yang Li,Hong-Bin Liu,Zhi-Yun Zhao,Kai Li,Yun-Kai Wang,Xu Li,Ting-Li Ma,Ling-Bin Kong

In recent years, researchers show great interest in electrode materials for sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) that combine the advantages of batteries and capacitors. And the high specific capacity transition metal oxides that can be used as anodes for SIHCs attract widespread attention. Herein, one-step facile hydrothermal synthesis of the CoMoO 4 nanorods as the transition metal oxides are successfully obtained. Due to the well bear to the volume change, the SIHCs exhibit superior electrochemical performance and stability with CoMoO 4 nanorods anode during charge and discharge. At a current density of 0.05 A g −1 , with an expanded potential from 0 to 3.0 V, the specific capacitance and the high energy density of CoMoO 4 //AC are 37.2 F g −1 and 63.3 Wh kg −1 , respectively. Meanwhile, the stability of the CoMoO 4 //AC in the long cycle is as expected. After 6000 cycles, the capacity retention of the CoMoO 4 //AC SIHC is 90% while the coulombic efficiency is always around 99%.

Construction of CoMoO4@NiMn-LDH Core-Shell Heterostructure on Nickel Foam for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Bu Chaomeng,Rao Huiting,Yuan Han,Wang Qian,Dai Jiaqi,Li Xianfu

To support smart grid technologies and mitigate the intermittency of renewable energy sources, efficient electrochemical energy storage is essential. Despite their inherent advantages, supercapacitors are constrained by insufficient energy density, limiting their practical deployment. To address this challenge, we report a hierarchical CoMoO 4 @NiMn-LDH core-shell heterostructure grown directly on nickel foam (NF) via a two-step hydrothermal method. The integration of a highly active NiMn-LDH nanosheet shell onto the CoMoO 4 nanorod core synergistically enhances electron transport and ion diffusion. Morphological characterization confirms the formation of a well-integrated porous structure comprising vertically oriented NiMn-LDH nanosheets encapsulating uniformly distributed CoMoO 4 nanorods. The synergistic interplay of structure and composition yields a CoMoO 4 @NiMn-LDH/NF electrode with a high areal capacitance of 17,869.6 mF cm −2 at 2 mA cm −2 , surpassing that of the corresponding single-component electrodes. Moreover, the electrode retains 79.74% of its capacitance at 10 mA cm −2 , demonstrating exceptional rate capability, and maintains 99.98% of its initial capacitance after 8000 charge–discharge cycles, indicating excellent structural stability. Kinetic analysis reveals a hybrid charge storage mechanism in which the capacitive contribution progressively increases at higher scan rates, facilitating rapid charge–discharge processes. An asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with this composite as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode delivers an areal capacitance of 2593.25 mF cm −2 and a maximum energy density of 0.922 mWh cm −2 at a power density of 1.6 mW cm −2 . Overall, this study presents a versatile core–shell heterostructure design strategy for developing high-energy, high-power supercapacitor electrodes.

Enhancing Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Performance of CoMoO4-Based Microrod Arrays in Neutral Media through Alkaline Activation

Xin Cui,Yu Cui,Meiling Chen,Rui Xiong,Yucheng Huang,Xiaowang Liu

We present that activation of CoMoO4-based microrod arrays in KOH (1.0 M, 2 h) allows us to significantly improve their electrochemical hydrogen evolution performance in phosphate buffer solution (1.0 M, pH = 7.1). The activation mechanism originates from the conversion of the surface layer of CoMoO4 to Co(OH)2 nanosheets, together with the release of Mo3O102– ions into the activation solution. Our experimental and calculated results suggest that the Co(OH)2 nanosheets on the surface of the CoMoO4-based microrod arrays show the ability to improve water molecule disassociation and stabilize the catalytic activity of the two-component catalysts by decreasing their overpotentials in the hydrogen evolution reaction. When extending this strategy to activate P-doped CoMoO4 with a low hydrogen absorption free energy, we report the synthesis of a new class of superior neutral electrochemical hydrogen evolution catalysts of P-doped CoMoO4–Co(OH)2 microrod arrays. We show that a low overpotential of about 30 mV (obtained from bulk electrolysis) is required to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in the neutral media. By making use of our catalyst and NiFe double hydroxide as cathodic and anodic electrodes, respectively, we fabricated a two-electrode electrolysis device for neutral overall water splitting. Our results showed a low cell voltage of 1.78 V (obtained from bulk electrolysis) that is needed for delivering a current density of about 10 mA cm–2 in the neutral electrolyte, even outperforming the state-of-the-art catalyst combination of Pt/C∥RuO2 in terms of catalytic activity and stability. These findings suggest that our strategy may be utilized as a facile but useful strategy toward the activation of molybdate catalysts to improve their HER performance in both basic and neutral media.

Morphology-controlled synthesis of CoMoO4 nanoarchitectures anchored on carbon cloth for high-efficiency oxygen oxidation reaction

Feifei Wang,Juan Zhao,Wen Tian,Zhufeng Hu,Xingbin Lv,Hualian Zhang,Hairong Yue,Yuxin Zhang,Junyi Ji,Wei Jiang

Novel CoMoO4 nanoarrays with different morphologies are anchored on a carbon cloth via a simple hydrothermal method by adjusting the Co/Mo atom ratio. The in situ growth and tight immobilization of the CoMoO4 nanocomposite on the carbon cloth can facilitate the electrolyte infiltration and electrons transfer rate at the contact interface. Therefore, the free-standing electrode of CoMoO4/carbon cloth with interconnected nanosheets shows superior electrocatalytic activity, and the overpotential of 286 mV is obtained at 15 mA cm−2 in alkaline solution. Moreover, the catalyst also exhibits a small Tafel slope of 67 mV dec−1 as well as good stability. The relationship between the active material morphology, contact interface and the electrocatalytic performance is also discussed. As the carbon cloth is commercially available, this simple but effective structural controlling method demonstrates a new large-scale practical electrode fabrication technique for high performance OER electrodes and large-scale water splitting.

Petal-like CoMoO4 Clusters Grown on Carbon Cloth as a Binder-Free Electrode for Supercapacitor Application

Chuanhong Chen,Hangchun Deng,Chongshi Wang,Wenqing Luo,Dejuan Huang,Tianxiang Jin

The development of supercapacitors with a high energy density and power density is of great importance for the promotion of energy storage technology. In this study, we designed and prepared petal-like CoMoO4 clusters combined with carbon cloth as an excellent self-standing and binder-free electrode for asymmetric supercapacitors. Due to the abundant electrochemical active sites, the promising electron conduction, and ion diffusion rate, the CoMoO4@carbon cloth (CoMoO4@CC) electrode exhibits an excellent electrochemical performance. The results show that the CoMoO4@CC material exhibits a high specific capacitance (664 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g) and an excellent cycle stability (capacitance remains at 84.0% after 1000 cycles). The assembled symmetrical supercapacitor has an energy density of 27 Wh/kg when the power density is 600 W/kg. Even at a higher power density (6022 W/kg), it still maintains a good energy density (18.4 Wh/kg).

Ultra-thin nanohoneycomb porous CoMoO4 with excellent catalytic performance for water splitting at large current densities

Yuanyuan Chu,Zejiao Wang,Xiaoxiao Zhang,Zhifei Hu,Wei Wei,Chenchen Ge,Wei Zhou,Xiaoyao Tan

Electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is considered the most effective and cleanest strategy to make full use of renewable energy. It still lacks the highly efficient and stable bifunctional catalyst to deliver high current density for large scale application of water splitting. Here, we innovatively developed a facile method to synthesize a three-dimensional (3D) honeycomb porous CoMoO 4 @pNi (porous nickel) catalyst with ultra-thin nanosheet, the generated oxygen vacancies and mesoporous structures with defects as active sites. We also precisely tuned the thickness and array structure to investigate its catalytic performance. The as-prepared CoMoO 4 @pNi catalyst delivers the overpotential of 377 mV for HER and 410 mV for OER, respectively, and only demands 1.99 V to reach a large current density of 1000 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. CoMoO 4 @pNi catalyst is also operated for 200 h under 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively, and both showed an ignorable current decrease. The excellent activity and stability are ascribed to the high surface area, short transport path for electrons and protons, the full contact between the exposed active sites and electrolyte, and the inherent stable nanohoneycomb porous structure of the ultra-thin nanosheet.
