Enhancing Cs2AgBiBr6 Photocatalysis via Rationalizing S-Scheme Heterojunction with Zinc Phthalocyanine as the Reductive Side

Yuqi Xie,Enze Zhu,Yimeng He,Yifan Wang,Qinghua Li,Bingxin Lei

Lead-free double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 (CABB) has emerged as a promising photocatalytic material, but its efficiency is limited by rapid electron–hole recombination and insufficient active sites. Herein, an S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed through the in situ growth of CABB nanosheets on a zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) substrate, where ZnPc acted as the reduction site with abundant high-energy electrons. Comprehensive characterizations confirmed the formation of robust interfacial Zn–Br bonds, ensuring intimate contact between ZnPc and CABB. Under visible-light irradiation, the optimized 0.05ZnPc/CABB composite exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity, achieving complete degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 20 min, which outperformed pristine CABB and ZnPc. Mechanistic investigations involving photoelectrochemical measurements and density functional theory calculations revealed that the S-scheme band alignment, driven by the interfacial Zn–Br bonds and the built-in electric field, significantly enhanced charge separation and transfer. Additionally, the composite displayed excellent stability, maintaining 99% RhB degradation efficiency after five cycles. This work provides a novel strategy to enhance CABB photocatalysis via constructing S-scheme heterojunctions with ZnPc, highlighting potential applications in environmental remediation.

Enhanced light harvesting in lead-free Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskite solar cells with plasmonic Ag nanoparticles

Yanyan Duan,Jiangning Li,Biao Wang,Qiong Li,Zhiheng Wu,Jing Mao,Wei Zhang,Guosheng Shao,Yonglong Shen

Lead-free Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskite solar cells (PSCs) possess unique environment-friendly and stable attributes. However, the wide bandgap of Cs2AgBiBr6 weakens the light capture capability, thus limiting the improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) for PSCs. Herein, a convenient and efficient method is presented by incorporating plasmonic Ag nanoparticles (NPs) onto a perovskite surface. Owing to the synergistic effect of far-field light scattering and near-field enhancement of Ag NPs, the short-circuit current density of the modified PSC is enhanced by approximately 30%. In addition, the introduction of Ag NPs endows a larger Fermi energy level difference between the TiO2/perovskite interface, resulting in a higher open-circuit voltage. The optimized device with the structure of fluorine-doped tin oxide/compact TiO2/mesoporous TiO2/Cs2AgBiBr6/carbon delivers a PCE of 2.69% as compared to the control device with a PCE of 2.04%, which represents one of the highest efficiencies of hole transport layer-free, carbon-based PSCs. Furthermore, the unencapsulated device retains nearly 98% of its initial PCE even after being stored for 32 days at 25 °C and relative humidity of 40 ± 5%. This work provides a new insight into constructing high-efficient and environment-friendly PSCs.

Optoelectronic Resistive Memory Based on Lead-Free Cs2AgBiBr6 Double Perovskite for Artificial Self-Storage Visual Sensors

Haibo Ye,Zhiyong Liu,Bo Sun,Xuning Zhang,Tielin Shi,Guanglan Liao

Mimicking the human visual memory system has attractive prospects in the field of artificial vision. However, the prominent challenge of realizing human visual memory is how to detect and store image information at the same time, which demands a multifunctional electronic device that can sense and memorize image information like the brain. In this work, simple two-terminal optoelectronic resistive random access memory (ORRAM) devices are demonstrated based on lead-free Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 perovskite, exhibiting a unique optoelectronic resistive characteristic that can be reset by UV light illumination. A proof-of-concept artificial self-storage visual system based on the ORRAM is constructed, which shows similar reinforcement learning and memory forgetting functions to the human visual memory system, and realizes the integrated functions of image sensing and memory for a long-term retention time (>6000 s). Theoretical calculations indicate that UV light illumination will induce the annihilation of Br defects and cause the fracture of conductive filaments, resulting in the optical RESET phenomenon. Furthermore, by integrating with perovskite solar cells, an all-optically controlled universal implication logic gate is constructed. This work provides an important step toward the mimicry of human visual memory and the multifunctional artificial visual integration of perception and storage.

Beili Pang,Xiang Chen,Fujie Bao,Yili Liu,Ting Feng,Hongzhou Dong,Liyan Yu,Lifeng Dong

Among lead-free halide double perovskites , Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 is a potential alternative to substitute toxic and unstable organic-inorganic lead-based halide perovskites. However, the film forming ability and wide indirect bandgap have impeded its applications. Herein, we investigate to use MoS 2 nanoflakes as a hole transport interlayer to improve the crystallinity of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 , tailor energy level alignments and enhance the stability of solar cells. With the addition of the MoS 2 nanoflakes, the Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 -based solar cell has a power conversion efficiency of 4.17% with an open circuit voltage of 1.10 V and short-circuit current of 6.12 mA cm −2 . This work would provide a new approach for developing all inorganic lead-free Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 -based solar cells with high power conversion efficiency and good stability.

All-Inorganic Lead-Free Cs₂AgBiBr₆/ZnO Artificial Retina Synapse Based on Photoelectric Synergistic Dual-Mechanism for Neuromorphic Computing

Zhenpeng Cheng,Tianle Wang,Junyan Zhu,Yaqi He,Shijie Liu,Ming-Yu Li,Haifei Lu,Xiaoyan Wen,Jihoon Lee,Sisi Liu,Sui Mao

Adaptive learning capability of optoelectronic synaptic hardware holds promising application prospects in next generation artificial intelligence, and the development of biometric retina perception is sternly hampered by three crucial issues, including well-balance between excitatory and inhibitory, non-volatile multi-state storage, and optimal energy consumption. In this work, a novel Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 /ZnO non-volatile optoelectronic synapse is proposed and successfully programmed with optical excitatory and electronic inhibitory in the light of dual-mechanism: Lead-free perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 guarantees abundant photogenerated carrier concentration, and the process of carrier capture and release occurs in ZnO layer, which can collaboratively modulate various synaptic plasticity behaviors depending on distinct stimulus. Consequently, multi-bit storage is attained with the dual-mechanism non-volatile memory (DNVM) as a function of consecutive light spikes. The energy consumption of the DNVM is 1.85 nJ at a single light spike, and an ultra-low one of 13.8 fJ is triggered with a single electrical pulse, which approximatively meets the requirement of the biological synaptic event energy consumption. The performance of the DNVM is further evaluated with the Pavlov's classical conditioning experiment and visual hardware system, offering an exciting paradigm for implementing on-chip adaptive visual perception and neuromorphic computing.

Dual-electric-field synergy in a Cs2AgBiBr6/Bi3TiNbO9 all-perovskite S-scheme heterojunction for efficient CO2 photoreduction

Renzhi Xiong,Dongchen Duan,Feiyan Shi,Wenjun Zheng,Yanhe Xiao,Baochang Cheng,Shuijin Lei

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is primarily limited by inefficient charge separation and insufficient thermodynamic driving force. To address these intertwined challenges, this study constructs a novel S-scheme heterojunction by integrating the ferroelectric layered perovskite Bi 3 TiNbO 9 with the lead-free double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 , which synergistically couples an interfacial built-in electric field with an intrinsic ferroelectric polarization field. This dual-electric-field design facilitates the efficient separation and directional migration of photogenerated charge carriers while preserving strong redox capability, thereby simultaneously overcoming both kinetic and thermodynamic limitations. The developed heterojunction exhibits outstanding CO 2 photoreduction performance, delivering a CO yield of 42.6 μmol g −1  h −1 , which is 6.7 and 26.6 times higher than those of the individual Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 and Bi 3 TiNbO 9 components, respectively. Moreover, it demonstrates excellent stability, retaining 89.3% of its initial activity after 48 h of continuous operation. Comprehensive characterization and theoretical calculations collectively confirm: (i) the successful construction of an intimate S-scheme heterojunction; (ii) the presence of a ferroelectric polarization field; and (iii) a significantly reduced energy barrier for COOH* formation, which promotes CO 2 reduction. The integration of ferroelectric effects with S-scheme heterojunction engineering presented in this work provides a promising strategy for developing efficient solar energy conversion systems.

Oxygen vacancy in lead-free perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6/WO3-X for enhanced photocatalytic C(sp3)-H bond oxidation

Chen Taoran,Qin Tian,Sun Hongli,Su Chenliang

Photocatalytic oxidation of toluene to valuable benzaldehyde offers a promising pathway for sustainable production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In this process, photogenerated holes play a crucial role in C(sp 3 )-H bond dissociation. However, the photocatalytic performance of current photocatalysts is often hindered by the low separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated charges. In this work, we presented a perovskite-based heterostructure via in situ growth of defective WO 3- x nanosheets on Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 nanoparticles for photocatalytic toluene transformation. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy tests proved the introduction of oxygen-deficient WO 3- x component enhanced the chemisorption of molecular oxygen. The in situ electron paramagnetic resonance and 4-chloro-7-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazole fluorescence measurements further confirmed the presence of oxygen vacancies, and the formation of heterostructure synergistically accelerated the formation of the superoxide radicals and the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. Under visible light irradiation, Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 /WO 3- x photocatalyst could effectively oxidize toluene toward benzaldehyde with a conversion rate of 9020 μmol g −1  h −1 , which was a 3.5-fold increase over that of the unmodified Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 . High-performance DUV-visible dual-band photodetector enabled by β-Ga2O3/Au/Cs2AgBiBr6 heterojunction with sandwich architecture

Mingliu Li,Hongbin Wang,Shuo Yang,Lin Yang,Peng Li,Jiangang Ma,Yichun Liu

High sensitivity and fast response dual-band photodetectors (PDs) covering the deep-ultraviolet (DUV) to visible spectrum are highly desired for industrial and scientific applications. Herein, a sandwich-architecture PD covering the range from DUV to visible was prepared by stacking a β -Ga 2 O 3 DUV absorbing layer, interdigitated Au electrodes, and a Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 (CABB) visible absorbing layer. At 5 V bias voltage, the sandwich-architecture PD achieves responsivities of 37.74 mA/W at 240 nm and 0.07 mA/W at 450 nm with microsecond response time, respectively, which is superior to the PDs using monolayer β -Ga 2 O 3 or CABB. Furthermore, it demonstrates self-powered dual-band detection capability with maximum responsivity of 8.13 mA/W. Enhanced performance arises from two synergistic mechanisms: a vertical built-in electric field at the β -Ga 2 O 3 /CABB interface spatially separates photogenerated carriers, while a higher hole mobility in CABB facilitates the charge collection under a lateral bias field between Au electrodes. Importantly, the β -Ga 2 O 3 /Au/CABB PD demonstrates high-resolution images under 240 nm and 450 nm illumination. This work provides a route for developing high-performance DUV-visible dual-band photodetectors, highlighting their potential for advanced multispectral imaging applications.

Sustainable photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohols via an embedded Ti-MOF/Cs2AgBiBr6 S-scheme heterojunction without external oxidants

Xinyi Dong,Ya Chu,Weiqiang Zhang,Baoye Hu,Jinsheng Zhao,Yue Liu,Shiyu Wang,Guangjiu Zhao

In this work, S-scheme Ti-MOF/Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 heterojunction photocatalysts were developed via an in situ self-assembly strategy, achieving satisfactory interfacial contact, matched band alignment, enhanced charge separation, and redox activity. The optimized Ti-MOF/Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 composite exhibited remarkable photocatalytic performance toward benzyl alcohol oxidation under visible light, achieving > 99 % conversion and selectivity without external oxidants and sacrificial agents. It represents a fourfold enhancement over individual components, while maintaining broad substrate applicability and excellent cycling stability. The S-scheme configuration ensures sufficient oxidation potential compared with conventional Type-II systems. This work addresses challenges of limited bandgap tunability and inefficient carrier transport in selective aromatic alcohol oxidation, establishing a promising strategy for designing efficient lead-free perovskite photocatalysts toward sustainable organic transformations.

Fabrication of S-scheme heterojunction consisting of W-doped BiVO4 and biperovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics

Ze Liu,Yadong Hu,Chengkai Li,Zhenyu Zhang,Tingzhe Shen,Danni Zeng,Rongfeng Guan,Changjian Zhou,Pengyu Dong

Photocatalysis technology can degrade organic pollutants in wastewater, improving the ecological environment and protecting biodiversity. The BiVO 4 stable chemical properties of BiVO 4 make it a robust candidate for photochemical applications. Moreover, its broad light absorption spectrum and optimal band structure further enhance its potential, driving widespread research interest. The introduction of the eco-friendly biperovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 enhanced BiVO 4 ′s surface area and visible light absorbance. Simultaneously, the doping process introduces impurities that modify charge transfer pathways, thereby enhancing the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. When contrasted with pure BiVO 4 , the W-BiVO 4 /Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 composite demonstrates superior surface area characteristics and exhibits stronger absorption within the visible light spectrum. Within 40 min after exposure to visible light, the efficiency of W-BiVO 4 /Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 photocatalyst to degrade ofloxacin (OFX) and meloxicam (MEL) was 93.15 % and 92.70 %, respectively. Based on the toxicity analyses and antimicrobial assays simulated by the software, no highly toxic substances were found in the degradation intermediate products of OFX and MEL. The catalysts’ energy band structure and photoelectrochemical properties showed that W-BiVO 4 /Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 followed the S-scheme heterojunction charge transfer mechanism. By integrating BiVO 4 with other semiconductors in the form of S-scheme heterojunctions, this study explores a strategy that may effectively improve photocatalytic efficiency, particularly in pollutant degradation applications.

In-situ assembling 0D/2D Z-scheme heterojunction of Lead-free Cs2AgBiBr6/Bi2WO6 for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Lijun Wu,Song Zheng,Heng Lin,Shun Zhou,Ahmed Mahmoud Idris,Jin Wang,Sheng Li,Zhengquan Li

All-inorganic lead-free halide double perovskites have emerged as rising star photocatalysts to substitute the toxic lead-based hailed perovskites (LHPs) owing to their unique photophysical properties. Nevertheless, their photocatalytic activities toward CO 2 reduction are still far from comparable with the LHPs, associated with severe charge recombination and sluggish surface catalytic reaction . Herein, a delicate 0D/2D heterojunction of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 /Bi 2 WO 6 (CABB/BWO) was assembled by in-situ growing cubic CABB nanocrystals on the flat surface of BWO nanosheets via a facile hot-injection method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that the work function and Fermi level difference between CABB and BWO give rise to charge redistribution at the interface upon the formation of the heterojunction, creating an internal electric field (IEF). Upon light irradiation , the IEF enables the photogenerated electron transfer from BWO to CABB via direct Z-scheme electron transfer mode with striking spatial charge separation as verified by in-situ X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. Consequently, the CABB/BWO heterojunction realizes 7-fold higher photocatalytic activity than pristine CABB with significant electron consumption rate of 87.66 µmol g -1 h −1 under simulated solar light (AM 1.5G).

Optically-driven nine-state memory and pattern recognition in a lead-free Tin-doped Cs2AgBiBr6 memristor for neuromorphic visual system

Danruoyu Wang,Zhizhuo Zhang,Yashi Chen,Shun Wang,Fengzhen Lv,Yong Yang,Huimin Tang,Fuchi Liu

Imprinting vision as memory is essential for brain-inspired computing, requiring devices that integrate memory and processing. However, this technique development is hindered by limited memory states and segregated functionalities. In this work, a lead-free Sn-doped Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 (Cs 2 Ag 0.85 Sn 0.15 BiBr 6 ) optoelectronic memristor is proposed to integrate high-density memory and visual perception capabilities. For the first time, the nine-state memory driven by a 450 nm light at different intensities was achieved in the Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 -based device. These states remained stable for over 2000 s and through 620 cycles, demonstrating robust high-density memory capability and guaranteeing the accuracy of visual simulation. Random letter recognition and color image processing were performed by logic operations (AND, XOR) on the optically modulated resistance states. Key synaptic functions were also emulated, enabling a “learning-forgetting-relearning” process. Fundamentally, the optimal 15 % Sn doping at the Ag site narrowed the bandgap of films and increased the bromine vacancy concentration, enhancing the optically controlled memristive effect. The Schottky-like barrier at the Au/Cs 2 Ag 0.85 Sn 0.15 BiBr 6 interface was modulated by photo-induced carriers, which further influenced the multilevel memristive behavior. Our study offers a promising strategy for enabling synergistic sensing-memory-computing in a standalone device for human-machine interaction systems with visual data storage, buffering, and processing capabilities.
