Hydrogenation of xylose is an important industrial process for the production of xylitol, which is known as a healthy sweetener. In this work, bimetallic phyllosilicate-derived Cu–Ni alloy catalysts were constructed via an ammonia evaporation method followed by reduction under hydrogen and applied for the hydrogenation of a high-concentration xylose aqueous solution for the production of xylitol. The Cu–Ni alloy catalysts exhibited higher xylose conversion than the corresponding monometallic Cu and Ni catalyst. And the xylitol yield was increased with the increase of the ratio of nickel to copper for the bimetallic alloy catalyst. The higher xylose conversion was obtained at elevated reaction temperature and H2 pressure. In addition, reduction conditions, especially temperature, were found to significantly influence the catalytic activity of the phyllosilicate-derived Cu–Ni alloy sample. The 5Cu15Ni-EA catalyst activated at 700 °C exhibited excellent performance for xylose hydrogenation in terms of xylose conversion (>99%) and xylitol selectivity (>99%) under moderate conditions (100 °C and 4 MPa H2). The performance of the 5Cu15Ni-EA catalyst is also superior to the reported consequences of xylitol manufacture via hydrogenation over a Raney nickel catalyst and a co-impregnation-derived bimetallic catalyst. Furthermore, the xylitol yield did not change obviously for 5Cu15Ni-EA during the 200 h of continuous reaction in a fixed bed reactor. The XRD, XPS, HRTEM–EDS mapping, and line scan results of the fresh reduced 5Cu15Ni-EA sample verified the existence of a highly dispersed Cu–Ni alloy. The formation of these uniformly dispersed Cu–Ni alloy sites induced efficient performance for the hydrogenation of a high-concentration xylose aqueous solution.

Coating nickel onto copper nanowires (Cu NWs) by one-pot synthesis is an efficient approach to improving the oxidation resistance of the nanowires. Because Ni is much less conductive than Cu, it is of great importance to understand the relationship between the thickness of the Ni coating layer and the properties of NWs. Here we demonstrate one-pot synthesis of Cu–Ni core–shell NWs with a tunable Ni thickness by simply varying the Cu and Ni mole ratio in the precursor. We have observed that an increase in Ni thickness decreases the aspect ratio, surface smoothness and network conductivity of the resulting NWs. However, Cu–Ni NWs with a thicker Ni layer display higher oxidation temperature. The optimal Cu–Ni NWs, which were prepared using a Cu2+/Ni2+ molar ratio of 1/1, have a Ni-layer thickness of about 10 nm and the onset oxidation temperature of 270 °C. The derived transparent conductive films present a transmittance of 76% and a sheet resistance of 300 Ω sq−1. The flexible heater constructed from such high quality Cu–Ni NW films demonstrates effective performance in heating and defrosting.

The electrocatalytic formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) offers a unique pathway for simultaneous hydrogen and formate generation at the anode, presenting an energy–efficient alternative to the oxygen evolution reaction for hydrogen production. However, the inherent activity and stability of Cu–based electrocatalysts for FOR are still not satisfactory for practical application, primarily due to the facile oxidation of active Cu 0 sites to inactive Cu + /Cu 2+ species during operation. Herein, we construct a Cu/Ni heterojunction electrode via facile electrodeposition. Experimental and spectroscopic characterizations confirm interfacial electron transfer from Ni to Cu, creating an electron–rich Cu surface that resists oxidative deactivation. This electronic modulation results in exceptional FOR performance, achieving 100 mA·cm –2 at 0.1 V vs. RHE and remarkable stability over 100 h. In situ measurements further reveal that the optimized electronic structure of the Cu/Ni heterojunction electrode enhances the adsorption and conversion of the key H 2 C(OH)O intermediate. A bipolar H 2 production device incorporating a Cu/Ni anode achieves 100 mA·cm –2 at a cell voltage of 0.14 V. This work demonstrates the promise of interfacial electronic engineering in developing efficient catalysts for energy–saving hydrogen production.

A series of Cu-modified Ni–Al2O3 catalysts with various Cu/Ni ratios (xCu/Ni–Al2O3) were prepared, and systematically characterized using BET, XRD, SEM, H2-TPR, H2-TPD, TG, and XPS. The catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of N,N-dimethylaniline to N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine in a continuous fixed-bed reactor. When the Cu/Ni molar ratio was 0.1, the active components were highly dispersed on the Al2O3 support, which possessed a high specific surface area and well-developed porous structure. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated strong hydrogen desorption capacity and enhanced thermal stability. Synergistic electronic interactions between Ni and Cu improved the adsorption and activation of both reactant and H2 molecules. The incorporation of Cu near the Ni active sites effectively modulated the selectivity toward the desired product N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine. Under the optimal reaction conditions: H2 pressure of 5 MPa, reaction temperature of 130 °C, liquid hourly space velocity 0.1 h−1 and hydrogen-amine volume ratio of 5500 : 1, the 0.1Cu/Ni–Al2O3 catalyst achieved superior performance, with a N,N-dimethylaniline conversion rate of 99.5% and a selectivity for N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine of 97.6%.

The poor dispersion and stability of metal-doped carbon materials prepared via conventional hydrothermal or calcination methods have limited their application in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, inspired by a hot-spot-effect-triggered confined coordination strategy, we developed a coconut shell biochar-supported Cu–Ni catalyst (Cu–Ni@BC) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade multiple antibiotics, including tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and norfloxacin (NOR). The mechanochemical synthesis endowed the catalyst with a high specific surface area, uniform metal dispersion, and strong metal–support interaction, ensuring stable loading and excellent catalytic activity. Under optimal conditions, the Cu–Ni@BC+PMS system achieved 96.7% TCH removal within 30 min, markedly outperforming single-metal systems. Radical quenching experiments and EPR analysis identified O 2 •⁻ as the predominant reactive species, with additional contributions from •OH, ¹O 2 , and SO 4 •⁻, collectively indicating a synergistic radical/non-radical mechanism. The catalyst retained high activity over five cycles (TCH removal efficiencies of 97.1%, 96.0%, 92.7%, 86.9%, and 82.3%), with minimal Cu and Ni leaching. Toxicity evaluation confirmed significant detoxification of TCH and its intermediates. Moreover, the catalyst displayed high degradation efficiencies for CIP (95.7%) and NOR (85.6%), excellent performance in real wastewater, and strong anti-interference tolerance toward common inorganic anions, achieving 85.6–96.9% removal for diverse antibiotics and dyes. This study overcomes the performance bottleneck of traditional single-metal catalysts in PMS activation and provides new insights into designing efficient, stable, and sustainable bimetal–biochar catalytic materials.

Graphical CO 2 Reforming : Transition metal-based SiO 2 -Ni@CeO 2 catalyst with typical core@shell structure exhibited the better activity/stability in CO 2 reforming with ethanol reaction compared to SiO 2 -Cu@CeO 2 sample. It is of great significance to design the high-performance catalysts with good anti-sintering and coke-resistance properties which can efficiently convert undesirable greenhouse gas CO 2 with bio-ethanol into high value-added syngas. To be addressed this issue, a series of SiO 2 -M@CeO 2 (M: Cu, Ni) catalysts with typical core@shell structure were prepared via a strong electrostatic adsorption technique. Interestingly, Ni-based catalyst exhibited the higher activity towards ethanol dry reforming at the relatively low temperature. Meanwhile, SiO 2 -Ni@CeO 2 catalyst presented good stability after a 50 h tests while a serious deactivation occurred for SiO 2 -Cu@CeO 2 within 20 h reaction due to heavy carbon deposition and reactor blockage. Herein, the higher catalytic performance of SiO 2 -Ni@CeO 2 catalyst compared to SiO 2 -Cu@CeO 2 sample was attributed to the combination effect of its mesoporous structure, higher Ni dispersion as well as stronger Ni-Ce interaction as depicted by BET, TEM, XPS, H 2 -TPR and XRD findings. This work might provide meaningful information to other reforming processes involving coke formation and active metal sintering problems.

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate represents a carbon-neutral approach to managing wastewater remediation while offering an innovative route for high-value green ammonia synthesis. However, nitrite byproduct is inevitably generated in the electrochemical process, which is more toxic to human beings and limits the conversion efficiency of nitrate to ammonia. Herein, a bimetallic metal–organic framework NixCu(3−x)(HITP)2 (HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene) is proposed as both a cascade catalyst to eliminate the nitrite and a mechanism platform for the study of the cascade process for nitrate reduction. The bimetallic NixCu(3−x)(HITP)2 platform shows that the Cu sites work as the active sites responsible for the conversion of nitrate to nitrite (NO3− + 2 e− → NO2−). The byproduct NO2− has a tendency to adsorb at Ni sites and further convert to NH3 (NO2− + 6 e− → NH3). By integrating Cu and Ni active centers, the bimetallic MOF strategy synergizes the distinct reaction pathways on heterogeneous metal centers. As a result, compared with monometallic Cu3(HITP)2, the optimal Ni1.5Cu1.5(HITP)2 achieved an outstanding NH3 yield of 130.93 μmol h−1 cm−2 with dramatically enhanced NH3 selectivity. This research elucidates the correlation between structure and activity in bimetallic active sites and cascade catalysis, which offers a high-efficiency nitrate-to-ammonia reduction.

The efficient depolymerization of lignin for the production of high-value chemicals is essential for the development of a sustainable and competitive biorefinery . In this study, we report the preparation of homologous biochar-supported inlaid Cu–Ni catalysts (Cu x Ni y /BC) using a one-step method, and their application for lignin depolymerization in mild water without the need for external hydrogen, additives, or co-catalysts. The Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC (0.05 g catalyst, 8 h, 280 °C, and 18 mL water) showed exceptional catalytic activity , with a monophenol yield of 94.35 ± 2.92 mg/g, bio-oil yield of 68.98 ± 1.42%, and a lignin conversion rate of 92.36 ± 1.99%, which outperformed both the biochar support and monometallic catalysts. The outstanding catalytic performance of Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC was attributed to its strong metal-support interaction, alloy sites, and well-dispersed nanoparticles . Reusability experiments demonstrated that the Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC exhibited relatively good stability for up to four reuses, with only a 2.32% reduction in catalytic activity per cycle. Mechanism investigation revealed that the Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC, with its abundant mesoporous structure and enhanced acid sites, displayed excellent deoxygenation ability, enabling effective cleavage of C–O/C–C bonds and the production of G-type phenols . This approach provides new insights into the large-scale utilization of lignin for the production of high-value chemicals.

The 0.4 nm molecular sieve supported Cu-Ni bimetal catalysts for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO 2 and CH 3 OH were prepared and investigated. The synthesized catalysts were fully characterized by BET, XRD (X-ray diffraction), TPR (temperature programmed reduction), IR (infra-red adsorption), NH 3 -TPD (temperature programmed desorption) and CO 2 -TPD (temperature programmed desorption) techniques. The results showed that the surface area of catalysts decreased with increasing metal content, and the metals as well as Cu-Ni alloy co-existed on the reduced catalyst surface. There existed interaction between metal and carrier, and moreover, metal particles affected obviously the acidity and basicity of carrier. The large amount of basic sites facilitated the activation of methanol to methoxyl species and their subsequent reaction with activated carbon dioxide. The catalysts were evaluated in a continuous tubular fixed-bed micro-gaseous reactor and the catalyst with bimetal loading of 20% (by mass) had best catalytic activities. Under the conditions of 393 K, 1.1 MPa, 5 h and gas space velocity of 510 h −1 , the selectivity and yield of DMC were higher than 86.0 % and 5.0 %, respectively.

Electrolysis of neutral saline wastewater/seawater enables sustainable hydrogen production but faces sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics and poor durability in chloride-rich media. Herein, a novel Cu 2 S/Amorphous/Cu–Ni–Mo heterostructure electrocatalyst, prepared by electrodeposition and atomic layer deposition (ALD), was introduced to address these challenges. The electrode was synthesized by electrodepositing a Cu–Ni–Mo coating onto a stainless steel substrate, followed by in-situ sulfurization using ALD technology to form an amorphous layer, yielding a heterostructure with optimized interfacial properties. This heterostructure electrode exhibited an overpotential of 63.29 mV at −10 mA cm −2 and maintained stable operation at −100 mA cm −2 for over 180 h in 0.5 mol/L NaCl +1 mol/L phosphate buffered saline (PBS). A 10 cm × 10 cm electrode was successfully fabricated using this scalable method, which exhibited uniform morphology and stability exceeding 240 h. This work advances HER performance and scalability in neutral environments, facilitating industrial-scale electrocatalytic hydrogen production.

To fulfill the requirements for dependable low-temperature soldering of high-temperature lead-free materials and to inhibit the transformation of Cu 6 Sn 5 to Cu 3 Sn during transient liquid phase diffusion bonding (TLPB) and aging processes, along with minimizing joint porosity, Cu particles were initially coated with a Ni layer through electroless plating, followed by Sn layer deposition via stannous sulfamate electroplating to achieve Cu@Ni@Sn core-shell structured powder. The study explored the oxidation resistance of Cu@Ni@Sn powder and examined the formation rate and activation energy of Cu 3 Sn in both Cu@Sn and Cu@Ni@Sn TLPB joints, clarifying the Ni coating’s role in restricting element migration and phase transformation. The Cu@Ni@Sn TLPB joint displayed a three-dimensional network of intermetallic compounds enveloping Cu particles. This joint demonstrated thermal endurance of at least 400 °C, room temperature shear strength exceeding 80 MPa, and shear strength of no less than 28 MPa after aging at 250 °C for 336 h, representing a 20% improvement compared to the Cu@Sn system. Joint porosity was lowered from 10% in the Cu@Sn system to 5% in the Cu@Ni@Sn system, surpassing both high-lead and nano-sintered Ag systems. The findings illustrate that the introduction of a Ni coating successfully restricted Cu diffusion, suppressed Cu 6 Sn 5 phase transformation, decreased void formation, and improved the high-temperature oxidation resistance of Cu@Ni@Sn powder. After undergoing reflow at 250 °C, the Cu@Ni@Sn joint exhibited thermal conductivity of 156 W/m·K and electrical resistivity of 4.2 μΩ·cm, surpassing those observed in the Cu@Sn system, Cu 6 Sn 5 , and Cu 3 Sn. These results imply that Cu@Ni@Sn TLPB joints fulfill the criteria for high-performance interconnections, presenting a viable replacement for high-lead and sintered nano-Ag soldering materials, making them a favorable candidate for high-temperature, high-reliability interconnect applications in power modules.

Take into consideration the backdrop of global energy crisis and rising carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere, to research and develop efficient catalysts for converting CO 2 into sustainable energy is crucial. Based on this background, this study employed the complexation combustion method to prepare CuNi nanoclusters (NCs) with varying atomic ratios and applied in catalytic hydrogenation of CO 2 to CO or methanol. Through systematic characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, BET, in-situ XPS, EPR, and chemisorption, the crystal phase structure, morphological features, physico-chemical properties, and catalytic performance of the as-obtained catalysts were thoroughly analyzed. The results of activity measurements demonstrate that the electronic synergy between CuNi bimetals exerts a positive catalytic effect on CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. Notably, the Cu 1 Ni 1 catalyst achieved the striking methanol selectivity (98.5%) while maintaining a higher conversion of CO 2 (11.4%). Specifically, thanks to the employment of acetic acid complexation together with the isolation and stabilization effects of Ni species, a considerable amount of metastable Cu + is detected in the obtained catalyst as evidenced by XRD and in-situ XPS, which synergistically interacts with Cu 0 and facilitates the redox cycling of Cu active sites for CO 2 hydrogenation. Besides, the CO 2 -TPD and EPR show that a higher concentration of oxygen defects and the resulting large number of basic sites with moderate strength greatly facilitate the adsorption of CO 2 and hydrogenation to methanol; however, the excessively sites with strong basicity which present on the surface of Cu 0 Ni 1 generate the strong adsorption of CO 2 molecules, making the reaction route turned to the reverse water gas shift which is conducive to the hydrogenation of CO 2 to CO. Thus, the bond strength between CO 2 and basic site could alternate the mechanism of catalytic reaction on supported copper based catalysts.
