In this study, we successfully synthesized CD@CuCo-MOF composites, which are composed of ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets of metal-organic framework (MOF) doped with carbon dots (CDs). The synthesis process involved hydrothermal and ultrasonically assisted self-assembly with a proper solvent ratio. The composites were then dispersed into pentaerythritol ester (PETE) with the aid of ultrasonic treatment. We thoroughly evaluated the physicochemical features and tribological properties of the CD@CuCo-MOF composites using advanced testing and characterization techniques including XRD, Raman, FTIR, TG, XPS, FIB-TEM and so on. The results demonstrated that the addition of CD@CuCo-MOF resulted in a 61.1 % reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) at a concentration of 0.1 wt% when compared to the base oil at room temperature. With the rise in temperature, CD@CuCo-MOF exhibited excellent lubricating properties due to its hybrid inorganic-organic structure and interlayer sliding effect. This led to a reduction of 59.2 % and 42.9 % in the mean COF compared to PETE oil at temperatures of 100 °C and 200 °C. This enhancement in the tribological performance of CD@CuCo-MOF could be attributed to several factors, including its superior dispersion stability, excellent lubricating properties, and involvement in the formation of a tribofilm. The tribofilm formed from a combination of CDs, CuCo-MOF, metal oxides , carbides , and nitrides promoted the rearrangement of the contact surface, thereby minimizing the friction and wear between the rubbing surfaces. These findings hold significant guiding implications for advancing the development of potential-controlled lubrication using MOFs doped with CDs across a wide temperature range.

Accurate non-invasive glucose monitoring is crucial for health diagnostics. However, the development of high-performance non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors for this application remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, a novel material, FeOOH encapsulated within zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)-derived copper-cobalt-layered double hydroxide (FeOOH@CuCo-LDH), was developed through a vapor-assisted deprotonation process for FeOOH encapsulation, followed by a hydrothermal reaction to synthesize the hollow composite. The synergistic interactions between the multi-metallic composition and the hollow structure significantly enhance glucose oxidation-reduction reactions. This enables the sensor to achieve a wide linear detection range (0.5–722 μmol·L −1 and 722–4222 μmol·L −1 ), high sensitivity (4.05 and 1.43 μA·L·μmol −1 ·cm −2 ), and a low limit of detection (0.83 μmol·L −1 ). The sensor demonstrated excellent performance in practical applications, accurately detecting glucose in saliva under physiological conditions. This study highlights the potential of FeOOH@CuCo-LDH as an excellent electrode material for non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensing, offering promising applications in diabetes prevention and diagnosis. To improve the electrocatalytic performance of CuCo hybrid oxides, here we report a novel and facile strategy to simultaneously tailor the morphology and electronic structure of CuCoOx by incorporation of CeO2. The as-synthesized CeO2-CuCoO/NF shows urchin-like morphology that is composed of numerous nanofibers, endowing the surface with superaerophobicity and massive active sites. Density functional theory calculation elucidates the crucial role of CeO2 in boosting the electron transfer and decreasing the free energy of intermediates during water splitting. As expected, CeO2-CuCoO/NF shows attractive bifunctional electrocatalytic activity with overpotentials of 266 and 93 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions in 1 M KOH, respectively, which are superior to most reported catalysts. A water-splitting electrolyzer consisted of CeO2-CuCoO/NF electrodes as both anode and cathode displays better performance than the noble-metal counterpart IrO2/NF‖Pt/C/NF. The present work undoubtedly sheds new insight on designing advanced bifunctional catalysts for practical water splitting.

The transfer hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) using ethanol as the hydrogen donor represents a green and efficient route for biomass valorization. In this work, a carbon-coated CuCo catalyst was designed to catalyze this transformation, achieving a high DMF yield of 96.4 % at 180°C within 6 h. Isotopic labeling indicated that transfer hydrogenation proceeded via a metal-mediated mechanism, while combined experimental and theoretical observations revealed that the formation of CuCo alloy optimized the adsorption modes of HMF. Specifically, the adsorption of the aldehyde group in HMF changed from η 1 to di-σ C,O configuration, weakening the C=O bond and thus facilitating hydrodeoxygenation. Notably, the CuCo alloy weakened the adsorption strength of HMF on the catalyst surface, preventing competitive adsorption from inhibiting ethanol dehydrogenation. These optimized adsorption interactions ensured the smooth progress of ethanol dehydrogenation and HMF hydrogenation, enabling CuCo catalyst to exhibit excellent performance in the transfer hydrogenation reaction.

Silicon holds exceptional promise as a next-generation lithium-ion battery anode, yet its practical deployment remains hindered by drastic volume fluctuations, unstable interphases, and intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. This work reports a triple-isolation and triple-conductive hierarchical architecture (Si/CuCo-NC@rGO), which enables independent regulation and synergistic optimization of mechanical stability and electron transport. In this system, silicon nanoparticles are encapsulated within a MOF-derived N-doped porous carbon framework and are further constrained by an externally distributed network of metallic nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). This hierarchical configuration simultaneously ensures mechanical stability and enables efficient charge transport. The introduction of graphene effectively suppresses the aggregation of MOF-derived metal species during pyrolysis, leading to the in-situ formation of ultrasmall and uniformly dispersed Cu/Co nanoparticles (∼20 nm) embedded in a highly defective N-doped carbon matrix. This multilevel architecture provides robust mechanical buffering, abundant ion-accessible channels, and a multiscale electron-transport network, while the flexible rGO shell maintains long-range electrical continuity and interfacial integrity during repeated cycling. Such cooperative confinement markedly accelerates Li + diffusion, enhances pseudocapacitive contributions, facilitates uniform SEI formation, and significantly suppresses Si expansion from 151.7% to only 48.6% after cycling. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized composite delivers a reversible capacity of 1013.2 mAh g −1 over 700 cycles at 1 A g −1 and an exceptional rate capability of 1160.6 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 . This work presents a generalizable structural engineering strategy that enables the independent regulation and synergistic optimization of mechanical stability and electronic transport, offering valuable design insights for the development of long-life, high-performance silicon anodes for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

This paper introduces a facile method to disperse rich-defect CuCo-N x active sites onto hollow graphite carbon nanocages , through one-pool dicyandiamide-assisted pyrolysis of porous CuCo-PBA-2MI precursor. The as-prepared CuCo-N x @N-CCs composites exhibit favorable electrocatalytic activity and robust durability for oxygen reversible catalysis (ORR/OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the same low concentration alkaline electrolyte (0.1 M KOH), including E ORR, 1/2 = 0.80 V, E OER, 10 = 1.58 V and E HER, 10 = −0.319 V. The nanocomposites show the superior electrocatalytic practical application in Zn-air batteries self-driven overall water splitting. Insights into the experimental analyses reveal that during the pyrolysis process, CuCo-PBA-2MI precursor captures volatile CN x active species from dicyandiamide, eventually forming high dispersed CuCo-N x active sites with unique N-doped porous hollow carbon scaffolds structure. Such hollow nanocage structures can effectively protect the active site from agglomeration and uneven distribution. It also prevents nanomaterials corrosion from alkaline electrolyte in the electrocatalytic reaction process. We believe that this strategy will offer useful guidelines to researchers who are interested in developing advanced and performance-oriented multifunctional electrocatalysts for clean energy devices.

Developing non-precious-metal electrocatalysts with concurrent high activity and durability remains a grand challenge for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we rationally design and develop a cerium and boron co-doped ultrathin copper–cobalt carbonate hydroxide nanosheet (B-Ce-CuCo) electrocatalyst. The introduced Ce and B achieve a rare collaboration between the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) by optimizing oxygen-containing intermediate adsorption, increasing stabilized oxygen vacancies, and activating lattice oxygen. The optimized catalyst exhibits an ultralow overpotential of 208 mV at 10 mA cm −2 with a Tafel slope of 42.77 mV dec −1 and exceptional stability over 1000 h at 50 mA cm −2 . Theoretical calculations reveal that Ce modulates the electronic structure by shifting unoccupied Co/O states toward the Fermi level, optimizing the adsoprtion of oxygenated intermediate and boosting the AEM pathway. Both Ce and B promote oxygen vacancy generation, while B stabilizes these vacancies to activate lattice oxygen, enabling extensive LOM participation via Co(IV) O and *O O intermediates. 18 O-labeled differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) directly identifies the coexistence of AEM and LOM pathways. This synergy reduces the AEM and LOM energy barriers to 0.39 eV and 0.58 eV, respectively, establishing a fundamentally new paradigm for designing high-performance electrocatalysts via dual-element doping.
